So I saw that Christian went on his way. At the sight of the old man who<br />

sat in the mouth of the cave, he could not tell what to think, especially<br />

because Pope spoke to him, though he could not go after Christian,<br />

saying, "You will never mend, until more of you are burned!"<br />

But Christian was silent, and so went <strong>by</strong> without being harmed.<br />

"O world of wonders — I can say no less!<br />

That I should be preserved in that distress<br />

That I have met with here! O blessed be,<br />

That hand that from it has delivered me!<br />

Dangers in darkness, devils, Hell, and sin,<br />

Did compass me, while I this valley was in.<br />

Yes, snares and pits, and traps, and nets, did lie,<br />

My path about — that worthless, foolish I,<br />

Might've been caught, entangled and cast down,<br />

But since I live — let Jesus wear the crown!"<br />

Now, as Christian went on his way, he came to a little ascent, which was<br />

built on purpose, that Pilgrims might see ahead of them. <strong>The</strong>refore,<br />

Christian went up — and looking forward, he saw Faithful ahead of him,<br />

on his journey.<br />
