Clean drinking water and access to a
good education are among the things many
of us take for granted.
But for many in Haiti, especially the
young, clean water and going to school can
be a small miracle.
On Good Friday, Faith and Concern, a
local ecumenical organization with a mission
of improving the lives of the Haitian
people, held its 43rd Annual Walk for Haiti
in Peabody.
Corey and Sarah Jackson performed “Suddenly Seymour”
during the opening night of the Peabody Black Box Theater
on Wednesday.
With the sound of Corey
and Sarah Jackson belting out
“Suddenly Seymour” from the
catwalk, the curtain officially
rose on performances at the
new Black Box Theater.
Located within the ArcWorks
Community Art Center on
Foster Street, Peabody’s Black
Box Theater will provide employment
opportunities for local
actors, musicians, set builders,
ticket sellers, and concession
workers, according to Jo Ann
Simons, Northeast Arc’s CEO.
“I can’t believe it’s been
transformed into this,” Simons
said at a donor appreciation reception
at the former warehouse
space Wednesday evening.
“Tonight is a celebration of the
Arc’s partnership with the city
of Peabody to be a part of the
movement to make the downtown
a destination. The more
restaurants and cultural assets
we have, the more opportunities
there are for employment,
artistic expression, for the community,
and for people of all
abilities.”
Northeast Arc employs people
with disabilities at its inclusive
businesses, including the
Breaking Grounds Cafe on Main
Street, Heritage Caning, Heritage
Shredding, and Shine Jewelry.
“We are lucky to have
Northeast Arc in our community,”
said Mayor Edward A.
Bettencourt Jr. “What was just a
warehouse is now a real theater
in the city of Peabody. This is a
great new space for all kinds of
gatherings.”
The mayor said the theater
ties in with many of the downtown
enhancements already in
place or in the works, including
the renovation of the O’Shea
building, several new restaurants
coming to Main Street,
and plans for a statue of George
Peabody on recently purchased
land across from City Hall.
Councilor-at-Large Tom
Gould, the chair of the Friends
of the Black Box Committee,
thanked the many donors, large
and small, who gave more than
$500,000 over the past year to
make the theater a reality.
“Hey, we did it,” Gould said.
“We have a black box theater
right here in downtown
Peabody.”
While it was a night to thank
donors and volunteers, it was
the performances that were the
hit of the evening, showing the
kind of entertainment the theater
can bring to the city.
In addition to Corey and
Sarah Jackson, the program
also featured pianist John
Archer; Peabody High Jazz
Band members Gabe Goldman,
Neil Sherman, and Kyle Souza;
YMCA of Metro North dancers
Amber Amadis, Dyasia Long,
and Khaliyah Todd; and Molly
Pinto Madigan.
The public can get their first
glimpse of a performance at
the Black Box Theater when
the Accidentally on Purpose
Comedy Improv Troupe performs
on Saturday night.
The troupe, which features
Peabody resident Ted Neary,
has a style similar to the hit
TV show “Whose Line is it
Anyway?”
The comedy night is 21
over, with doors opening at 7
p.m. and the performance beginning
at 7:30 p.m. Tickets
available online at www.bit.ly/
improvmarch31st.
That show and a musical
revue on May 19 featuring New
York artists David Macaluso
and Caitlin Burke will benefit
the theaters fundraising for a
permanent lighting and sound
system.
There is a temporary lighting
and sound system in place, but
Gould said efforts are underway
to raise $80,000 for a permanent
system for the theater.

Love and Haiti
Your Home Is Your Castle
HAITI
From page 1
Smith spoke about the difference
the money raised by the
walk over the years has made
in the lives of those served by
Faith and Concern. For decades,
Smith has traveled to Haiti at
least once per year to help with
a myriad of projects.
“The last time I was in Haiti,
we built a solar-powered, winddriven
water filtration system
that provides up to 5,000 gallons
a day of drinking water,”
said Smith.
A doctor at one Haitian clinic
told Smith that as much as 60
percent of the diseases in the
country are caused by waterborne
parasites and bacteria.
“We take it for granted that
we have clean drinking water,”
said Smith.
Now, visitors bring fivegallon
jugs to draw clean water
from the clinic’s new filtration
system
Faith and Concern’s work
in Haiti includes training two
generations of women in Portau-Prince
for domestic employment
and the establishment of
eight K-12 schools in towns
such as Roche a Bateau, Sau
D’Eau, and Lilavois.
“Education is not free in
Haiti, so it is usually the firstborn
son who gets an education,
and the girls are left even further
behind,” said Smith.
Smith said he has seen the
education in Haiti paying off,
helping make young people
more employable as well as
more politically aware.
Sister Nancy Rowen,
a member of Faith and
said she was happy to see
very much overweight, but
don’t let her 25 lbs. fool you.
She can still jump up and
Mooncake is an even mannered
gal and she enjoys
A healthy mind
has an easy breath.
-Author Unknown
Living a life in balance can
sometimes be a challenging feat.
But, be assured that with each
step you take while working towards
a more balanced lifestyle
you are creating something to
help you live a fuller life.
It is about making choices.
The right choices.
Every day.
Every time.
It is every breath you take.
It is every move you make.
It’s living life and making
choices.
A set routine, proper diet and
adequate exercise help to facilitate
a balanced lifestyle.
Your Routine. It could simply
be the time that you go to bed
each evening, or the time you
awake. It may be the time that
you eat, or exercise. Having a
routine makes us more committed
and therefore there is a
better chance that we will follow
through with our personal
pledges. It is a commitment to
oneself.
Your Diet. This depends on
what you like and how you eat.
I suggest a visit to a dietician
or naturopathic doctor before
you make changes. Many prefer
foods that are organic, pesticide
free and from the earth. Keep in
mind that there are diets associated
to each dosha type that
will help them stay in balance.
This is an interesting subject to
pursue further
Your Exercise. Each individual’s
choice of exercise varies as
well. But two common and easy
forms are walking and Yoga.
Walking gets you outdoors
and close to nature. You can
clear your head (congestion)
and your mind (thoughts). I
Pet of the week
you can visit her at the
Northeast Animal Shelter located
in Salem, MA. Visiting
hours are Monday-Friday 10-8
YOGA
Every breath you take
call it dump the junk! There is
not much that I can teach you
about walking, it comes natural.
Do what you can, but try 15-30
minutes at least three, preferably
five times a week for the
maximum benefit. You might
prefer to walk alone, or you may
choose to walk and chat, using
the time to catch up with an old
friend or co-worker. Another
form of exercise is yoga. Yoga is
in fact more than just exercise.
Yoga is a frame of mind. Yoga
is the union of body, mind and
and weekends 10-6.
pets on their website
spirit. Yoga is a lifestyle. Yoga
assists us with many of life’s
challenges, it opens the heart
and the mind!
Yoga by definition is one
thing: union, a balance of
living.
RISING TEMPERATURES
If a thermometer reading indicates a fever, remember that it is a sign that
the body’s natural defense against infection is working, and the fever should
be evaluated in context with other symptoms. Normally, body temperature
varies according to the time of day, gender, hormones, age, and other
factors. Adults’ normal temperature may range from 96.4 degrees F. to 99.4
degrees F. Temperatures tend to be lower in the morning and higher in the
evening. Temperatures above 106 degrees F. are life-threatening and require
immediate medical attention. As for infants (3 months or younger), a fever of
100.4 F (rectal) requires medical attention. With older children, a doctor
should be consulted when a temperature goes above 102 degrees F. (rectal).
When using any kind of thermometer, make sure you read and follow the
instructions that come with the thermometer. If the thermometer uses batteries,
be mindful that if it’s starting to give inconsistent readings, the battery
may need changing. For more information, please call VILLAGE PHARMACY
Tanner baseball seeks an even keel
By Harold Rivera
PEABODY — There’s no question that the Peabody
baseball team has the talent needed to make a deep postseason
run. The challenge for the Tanners this season,
as they aim to avoid an early state tournament exit, is to
stay even keeled from start to finish.
Last season, Peabody finished 14-9 and fell to Cambridge
Rindge and Latin in the first round of the Division
1 North tournament. It was a tale of two seasons for the
Tanners, who went 5-0 to start the year and cooled down
in the second half.
“We were playing very well,” Tanners coach Mark
Bettencourt, in his 14th season as Peabody’s head coach,
said. “We won our first five games, tripped on two and
then went on another nice run. Then we just hit a wall.
We lost a game to Braintree, one to Gloucester and one
to Malden Catholic. When you play good teams, that’s
capable of happening at any time.”
Peabody defeated some of the state’s better teams, like
St. John’s Prep and Xaverian, but closed the regular season
on a sour note. Those question marks carried over
into the state tournament, where the Tanners fell short in
the first round for the third consecutive season.
With a new season quickly approaching, Peabody’s
approach is to keep things more consistent throughout
the season in hopes of playing consistent baseball.
“The seniors on this team, having the regular season
ups and downs that we’ve had, I feel they get emotionally
drained towards the end of the year,” Bettencourt
said. “We’re talking about keeping things evenly keeled.
There’s too much over-excitement for big wins and too
much ‘jump off the bridge’ for bad losses. We have to
find that level of play where we’re playing consistently
day in and day out. We have to be Peabody High and
play at our level.
“For some reason the state tournament brings a lot of
anxiety to our program,” Bettencourt added. “We played
Cambridge very tight last year. It’s not a physical thing,
I think it’s a mental thing. We’re working on that this
season.”
The Tanners return a talented nucleus this spring and
it starts with senior shortstop Jake Gustin. A Division I
commit to Bryant, Gustin was the MVP of the Northeastern
Conference last season.
“Jake’s someone we’ll rely on offensively and defensively,”
Bettencourt said. “We’ll go as he goes. He’s the
heartbeat of our infield.”
Captaining the Tanners alongside Gustin are senior
outfielder Jake Irvine and senior catcher Eric DeMayo,
who sealed his future plans by committing to play Division
I football at Wagner.
“There’s really no pressure for Eric,” Bettencourt said.
“He loves football but the passion for baseball is still
there. With no worry about where he’s going next year
hopefully that takes some weight off his shoulders. He’s
going to control a young pitching staff.”
Also returning are four other seniors in first baseman
Trevor Lodi, outfielders Evan Mullin and Michael Martinez,
and second baseman Cole Cuzzi, who may also
see action at third.
On the mound, senior left-hander Alex D’Angelo will
be tabbed to lead a young Tanners pitching staff. D’Angelo
threw a perfect game for Peabody last season in his
first varsity appearance.
“Alex is one of the kids who has some experience,”
Bettencourt said. “Being left-handed has some advantages.
He keeps runners close and he’s a strike thrower. The
first thing we talk about is strikes. Alex did a good job at
that last year.”
MIAA adjusts season
The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association,
recognizing that the late-winter weather
made starting the spring season on time virtually
impossible, has extended the tournament
cutoff and seeding dates a week.
The proposal, by the Tournament Management
Committee, passed unanimously last week and
was supported by MIAA president Marilyn Slattery.
The MIAA hopes to give schools the opportunity
to complete a full season of competition
in light of the unprecedented weather during
March, in which there were three major Nor’easters,
one of them producing more than two feet of
snow in parts of the state.
The new playoff cutoff/seeding dates are as
Other returning pitchers are junior right-handers Joe
Gilmartin, Jonathan Poligone and Eddie Campbell, and
junior left-hander Joe Zito. Gilmartin is in the mix for
time at second base when he isn’t pitching, while Campbell
is in the discussion at third base as well.
Others who are fighting for play time are Taiden Perez
(catcher), Michael Sabella (first base), Brian Buckley
(left field), Jared Ridley (center field), James Jimenez
(catcher), and Christian Cummings (right field).
The Tanners had their first outdoor session Saturday
when they scrimmaged Lynnfield at Lynnfield. Bettencourt
likes what he has seen from his team thus far.
To be outside for the first time, to swing the bats the
way we did being aggressive early in the count was
what I wanted them to do,” he said. “Our pitchers threw
strikes for the most part. Gilmartin and Campbell looked
excellent. Zito and Piglione had that first inning where
they struggled a bit, but bounced back with great second
innings. We also got a sneak peak at young Chris Faraca,
the freshman, in a bullpen session. He looked like he
may be able to contribute this year.
“Gustin had a great day at the plate today and Evan
Mullen also hit the ball hard.
“But after watching our pitchers throw today, I feel
more confident that when the shooting starts, they will
throw strikes. Honestly, I was very happy with the way
we played.”
Chemistry projects to be one of Peabody’s strengths
this season.
“One thing about our baseball team that I enjoy is
the kids that we have are great kids,” Bettencourt said.
“They’re very coachable. The chemistry in our program
happens very early, generally. We’re still in our tryouts.
Even when I played, there’s a chemistry in baseball like
no other sport. I enjoy coaching them. They want to win
and the understand the tradition behind Peabody High
baseball.”
As for the NEC, Bettencourt expects the conference to
provide tight battles throughout the season. The addition
of GBL teams, along with experienced coaches, makes
for a competitive conference.
“The league’s impressive because we’re not familiar
with what the GBL teams,” Bettencourt said. “The addition
of those teams brings a little mystery. Now that it’s
the second season we know a little about them. There are
some good coaches coming out of that league. It makes
the league that much more competitive. There aren’t a
lot of easy games.”
The Tanners open the season April 9 at Revere.

Fenwick boys withstand Swampscott rally
BY MIKE ALONGI
AND HAROLD RIVERA
SWAMPSCOTT — After
jumping out to an early lead, the
Bishop Fenwick boys lacrosse
team ended up having to survive
a late Swampscott rally before
eventually beating the Big Blue,
8-6, in the season-opening game
for both teams at Blocksidge
Field on Monday.
“Everytime we play these
guys, it’s this kind of game,”
said Fenwick coach Steve
Driscoll. “And I think it’s really
beneficial for both teams to start
out with a tough game like this
to set the tone for the rest of the
year. I’m happy our guys were
able to come together and open
the season with a solid win.”
Fenwick got a great performance
from newcomer Diego
Alvarez-Segee, a sophomore
attacker who transferred in from
Malden Catholic this season.
Alvarez-Segee had two goals
and one assist in his debut for
the Crusaders.
“Honestly, we didn’t know too
much about him coming into this
year, but he’s a great player,”
Driscoll said of Alvarez-Segee.
“He’s only a sophomore, and I
think he’ll benefit so much from
being on the field with guys like
Brian (Harrington) and Derek
(DelVecchio) this year.”
Junior captain Derek DelVecchio
led the way with three goals
and one assist for Fenwick,
while junior Brian Harrington
added two goals. Freshman
midfielder Stefano Fabiano had
Harrington during their game Monday.
one goal and two assists. Junior
goalie Garrett Ruszkowski had
16 saves in the win, including
some big saves down the stretch
to hold the lead.
Swampscott got a big day
from Kyle Fitzgerald, who had
three goals and one assist. Ethan
Eichler had one goal and three
assists, while Collin Walsh had
one goal and one assist and Joe
DeSalvo had one goal.
“The best part about playing
games like this against Fenwick
is that the game is played the
right way,” said Swampscott
coach Todd Pierce. “It’s just two
teams going at it and competing
hard with no nonsense.”
The Crusaders got off to a
hot start and nearly looked like
they were going to run away
with this one, putting together
a few high-quality plays to
get goals from DelVecchio and
Harrington and take a 2-0 lead
within the first three minutes
of action. Swampscott was able
to slow the bleeding on a goal
from DeSalvo with just over
seven minutes left in the first
quarter, but Fenwick answered
with two more goals (one from
Alvarez-Segee and another from
DelVecchio) to take a 4-1 lead
into the first break.
Swampscott began to settle
in more in the second quarter,
notching a goal less than two
minutes in when Eichler hit Fitzgerald
for the first of four connections
on the day. But once again,
Fenwick responded with two
goals in a 30-second span (this
time on tallies from Alvarez-Segee
and Fabiano) to stretch the
lead back to three goals.
Things could have gone downhill
from there for Swampscott,
but the Big Blue never stopped
fighting. Eichler and Fitzgerald
connected two times in a row
for goals, the first one scored by
Eichler on a Fitzgerald assist and
the second scored by Fitzgerald
on an Eichler assist, to bring the
score to just 6-4 Fenwick going
into halftime.
Fenwick tried to take the momentum
back right away to start
the third, with Harrington scoring
his second goal of the game
less than two minutes into the
quarter to make it 7-4. It took
a long time for another goal to
be scored, but when it happened
it was Eichler and Fitzgerald
again. With just 2.3 seconds left
in the third, Eichler hit Fitzgerald
with a pass right in front of
the net and Fitzgerald buried it
to get the deficit back down to
two goals.
That momentum carried into
the start of the fourth quarter,
as Walsh scored an unassisted
goal just over three minutes
in to make it a one-goal game.
The Big Blue continued to press
and got some good chances, but
in the end it was Fenwick who
scored the deciding goal. With
just over five minutes to go in
the game, Fabiano sent a pass
over to Alvarez-Segee, who proceeded
to score a goal to seal the
win for the Crusaders.
Fenwick (1-0) will host Cardinal
Spellman on Wednesday (4),
while Swampscott will host Manchester-Essex
on Thursday (4).
•
Driscoll looks back on last
season as a major step forward
for the Crusaders. Fenwick had
to win its final three games to
clinch a berth in the Division
3 North state tournament. The
Crusaders did just that, finishing
the season at 10-11 before falling
to Newburyport in the first
round of the tournament.
“It was my first state tournament
appearance as the coach
here,” Driscoll said. “We missed
it by one game in 2016. It was
nice to have that playoff mentality.
It was a nice feeling and
it’s stuck in our players minds.
We qualified last season, now
it’s time to win a game or two
and push a little bit further in the
tournament.”
With a deep core of returners,
the expectations have been
clear from the early stages of the
preseason. Driscoll has stressed
heavy conditioning for the past
week and a half and the players
have responded positively.
“We’re pretty lucky because
we have 16 returning varsity
players, which is great,” Driscoll
said. “We have a lot of guys that
been in our culture. We kind of
got off running. We’ve worked
on conditioning a lot more this
year in the early going. Last year
we lost a lot of close games late.
One of the things we’re focusing
on is conditioning. We’re feeding
into our culture and working
on doing the right things.”
Driscoll foresees the Catholic
Central League will be competitive
from top to bottom this spring.
The benefit of being in a competitive
conference is Fenwick expects
to be battle-tested when the
state tournament rolls around.
“The last couple years it’s
been between Cardinal Spellman
and Austin Prep,” Driscoll
said. “Austin Prep’s going to
be very good again this year.
Williams is always a force to
be reckoned with. The CCL is a
league that if you play well in,
you’ll have a really good shot at
winning in the state tournament.
We’re looking forward to rivalry
games with St. Mary’s. The
league will be an uphill battle
but we’ve been pretty battle tested
over the past couple years.
We’re looking forward to it.”
“We’re really excited,”
Driscoll said. “We’ve had some
great practices. The guys are really
looking forward to playing in
Swampscott. We’re taking it one
game at a time. We’ve been outside
from the very beginning so
we’ve been off and running. It’s
a really good group. I’m really
excited about where we can be.”

Girls, boys tennis expect big things
BY ANNE MARIE TOBIN
PEABODY — After three seasons
of being on the outside looking
in, things may be looking up
for the Peabody boys and girls
tennis teams.
Last year, the girls team failed
to make the tournament for a third
straight season. The Tanners last
qualified in 2014, when the team
earned the No. 3 seed in the North
Division 1 tournament with a 13-2
record only to be swept by No. 6
Lexington in the quarterfinals after
a first round bye.
The boys team had it even
worse last year after it was forced
to disband before the 2017 season
even began due to lack of interest.
But with five of seven starters returning
from last year’s girls team
and the boys team back up and
running after a one-year hiatus, and
with newly resurfaced courts at
the high school, Peabody tennis is,
once again, alive and well.
“We have some girls coming
back with varsity experience,”
said coach Lorraine Benoit. “After
that, it’s a whole new slew of
kids who have never played so
they will be learning on the job. It
will all depend on how fast they
pick it up.”
The situation for the boys team
is a little different as the talk isn’t
so much about making its tournament;
it’s about the fact that the
boys actually have a team again.
The team, which has struggled
with numbers in recent years, last
made the tournament in 2014.
This year’s team may be young
in age and experience, but the
Tanners are eager to roll this Monday
when they entertain Revere
at home in the first match of the
season.
Maureen Kelly is back again at
the helm after serving as coach
from 2013-2015. Keith McBride,
who coached the team in 2016,
will serve as Kelly’s assistant.
With only seven players so far,
players will certainly see a lot of
individual attention.
“I have my fingers crossed that
a couple more athletes are coming,
and they are pretty much all
new to the sport, but they are all so
excited to be playing,” said coach
Maureen Kelly. “Most of them
have never had a lesson or participated
in organized tennis, but
they are eager to learn and have
already shown improvement and
a willingness to listen and learn.”
The girls team will be led by its
four senior captains -- Angela Ferrer,
April Horwarth, Shaelyn Kelley
and Lindsey Kouroyen, all of
whom started at doubles last year.
Back again for another year at first
PHOTOS | ANNE MARIE TOBIN
Seventh-grader Kacper Latacz practices (top), then joins
teammates Nate Sorrell and Matheus deSa to clean off the
courts.
singles is junior Brooke Hodas.
“The only sure thing is Brooke
will play first singles, and it looks
like the four seniors will be vying
for second and third singles,” said
Benoit. “It will all depend on what
we see once we start ladder play.
“We definitely have a long way
to go with so many kids with no
experience and it’s hard starting
from scratch, but we pretty much
know the singles situation. After
that, the rest will hopefully fall
into place.”
Benoit will be assisted, once
again, by athletics secretary Kathy
Strange and Ann Flynn.
The Tanners open the season
next Monday with an NEC contest
at Revere.
Thanks to a middle school waiver,
the boys team may have an ace
up its sleeve in 7th grader Paul
Neal, who is slated to step in at first
singles. Neal is a USTA player.
Most recently, Neal played his way
into the semifinal round of the 14
boys division at the New Hampshire
Challenger circuit event held
March 23-25 in Nashua.
“Paul is a ranked player in New
England in only his first year in
the age group and is very gifted,
so he will obviously play first singles
for us, but after that, they are
all brand new,” said Kelly. “It’s
funny because when I was coaching
before, we used to watch him
hitting with his mom when he was
just a little guy and we all used to
say, how can we get this kid on
our team.”
With no seniors, juniors Calvin
Anton, Peter Kadeli and Yasser
Khader will be looked to for leadership,
Kelly said.
“They have definitely stepped
up and taken on a big role as leaders,”
she said. “Nobody asked
them to, they just did it on their
own.
“We had talked about what it
meant to have middle school kids
on the team in terms of the older
kids needing to watch the way
they acted, and honestly, the older
kids understood it without my
even saying anything.”
Freshman Matheus deSa and
7th graders Kacper Latacz and
Nate Sorrell also made the team.
Good start for Tanners girls lacrosse
BY ANNE MARIE TOBIN
PEABODY — An opening day win for any high
school team is always a good thing. But in the case of
the Peabody girls lacrosse team, it might also have been
a huge sigh of relief.
Saturday morning on a brisk and windy day, the Tanners
took the first step in what they hope be another great
season, defeating Merrimack Valley Conference powerhouse
Haverhill 12-10 at Coley Lee Field.
“I told the team it was a monster win,” said Peabody
coach Dennis Desroches. “Putting Haverhill on first we
were a little nervous. The were returning their entire
roster and the MVC is a very good league. We wanted
to play them to test our girls early.
“For our new lineup, to come together after only being
on the turf twice was great, especially in the middle third
of the game. That’s a big win for us.”
On paper, the game projected to be a David and Goliath
affair. The Hillies came into the game stacked with
experience, while the Tanners were starting from scratch
having graduated 12 seniors, including four starters.
The good news for Peabody was the lone senior on the
squad, captain Sarah Buckley, and sophomore Colleen
Crotty were a 2-girl wrecking crew, combining for 10
of the Tanners’ 12 goals. Toss in a 4-point effort from
sophomore Olivia Kiricoples (2 goals, 2 assists) and a
strong effort from junior captain Alex Houlden (assist)
and it was the ticket the Tanners needed to come out on
top.
“Sarah has great stick movement on the ball going to
goal, has great ground ball control and plays great defense.
She is a complete player. As our only senior we
are going to be leaning on her experience and leadership.
She and Olivia were just awesome today.
“With such an inexperienced team, we needed someone
to take control out there. Crotty last year played a
Senior captain Sarah Buckley bears down as she
attempts to get by Haverhill’s Kylee Murphy.
supplemental role, but today she had the opportunity to
do that, and you saw that’s what she did. We hope these
young kids can do that like she did and leapfrog up to
that level.”
The game did not start well for the Tanners as the Hillies
took charge right of the gate with a 3-1 lead seven
minutes into the first half.
After that, it was all Peabody, which exploded for six
goals in a 7-minute span to lead 7-3 with 8:19 to play in
the first half.
Buckley got the party started with her second score of
the day. At the 15:23 mark. Two minutes later, sophomore
Olivia Kiricoples ripped a shot past Hillies’ goaltender
Hannah Goodwin to tie the game at 3-3.
The Tanners kept up the attack with two goals in under
SENIOR LIVING DIRECTORY
a minute to take the lead for good, the first by Crotty and
the second on a Buckley free position shot. Crotty added
another on score on a free shot at the 9:59 mark, then
Kiricoples closed out the 6-0 run with her third goal of
the day that made it 7-3 with 8:19 left.
Haverhill’s Meredith Budds (3 goals) stopped the
bleeding about three minutes later when she slipped a
free position shot past freshman goalie Olivia Lavalle
(10 saves), who making her first varsity start.
“Olivia made couple of really good saves in both
halves,” said Desroches. “They had four goals on free
position shots, but she was a sitting duck on those free
shots as it’s almost impossible to save those.”
Haverhill showed some life in the last three minutes,
scoring twice around a Buckley free position shot, to go
into halftime trailing 8-5.
The Hillies closed to 9-6 with two goals sandwiched
around a Buckley strike in the first four minutes of the
second half, but that was as close as they would come.
Peabody put the game out of reach with the prettiest goal
of the day with 13:03 to go when Kiricoples fed Crotty,
in full stride, just in front of the net to make it 11-7.
“That had to be the best goal, it was a momentum
changer. It was a great first game for us it had everything
you could want, so there is a lot to take out of this
game,” said Desroches.
“We were pretty productive on offense and defensively
we had some pretty good stands but have to be more
disciplined to minimize the defensive fouls.
“The first part of the game we struggled, maybe a little
pregame jitters with a lot of freshmen out there, then late
in the game we kind of coughed it up a little. Keeping
possession and being patient on offense was key.”
Desroches singled out defenders Catherine Manning,
a junior captain, freshmen Jordyn Collins and Aja Alimonte,
and junior captain Alyssa Saraceni for their
strong play.
Hello from the Wakefield-Lynnfield United
Methodist Church!
Here is a little bit about our welcoming
Methodist Church Community. Each Sunday,
Worship Service starts at 10:30 a.m.
during which we offer Sunday School for
infants/ toddlers through high Schoolers.
Following the service, we enjoy Fellowship
at our Coffee & Conversation time.
There are also many ways to serve the
community here through volunteer opportunities,
social groups and committees like Ecumenical
Youth Group, Choir, Book Club,
Sunday School, Bible Study, United Methodist
Women, Ministry Leadership Team, Card
Care Club, Craft Fair Committee, just to
name a few. We offer our building to many
local groups like Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts,
Wakefield Arts & Crafts Society, Music Together-
Preschool Music, Kids Curtain Call
Drama for Middle Schoolers, Wakefield Toy
Swap, just to name a few! We are also a Project
Linus Blanket Drop-off spot!
We even have musicians “In the House”
as our Pastor, Rev. Glenn Mortimer, and his
wife Elizabeth are trained musicians which
they incorporate into special church services
for all to enjoy! For more information
about our church, please call the church office
at (781) 245-1359 or email us at our new
No matter where you are on your spiritual
journey, you are welcome at West
Church! We love the Lord Jesus and we
care deeply about meeting the needs of
those God sends to us. At West Church you
will share in a worship service centered on
the majesty and holiness of God rather than
on ourselves. We have a number of program
offerings, special events, small
groups, and opportunities to serve that may
well encourage you to feel at home in our
fellowship.
Every Sunday at West Church, people of
all ages come together to worship the Lord,
Jesus Christ, and to share in fellowship as a
community. Each service includes singing
praise, prayer, and preaching from God’s
word. We invite you to come and join us for
worship at 10:30 a.m. Kingdom Kids, our
Worship Service program for children
nursery through 4th grade, is available
during Worship service. Sunday School is
available for children, youth and adults
from 9–10 a.m. For more information about
our programs throughout the week visit our
website: www.westchurchpeabody.org.
THANK YOU
ST. JUDE
May the Sacret Heart of Jesus be adored,
glorified, loved and preserved throughout
the world, now and forever. Sacred Heart
of Jesus, pray for us. Saint Jude, worker of
miracles, pray for us. Saint Jude, helper of
the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer 9
times a day. By the 8th day, your prayers
will be answered. Say it for 9 days, it has
never been known to fail. Publication must
be promised. My prayers have been
answered.
alternative spring break
This past Spring Break, 34
Salem State students chose to
give back to the community in
lieu of the traditional Spring
Break experience. Taking part
in one of Salem State’s “alternative
spring break” trips, students
traveled to either Texas
or South Carolina where they
joined Habitat for Humanity to
begin construction on houses
for a local family.
Students were housed in
local churches or retreat centers.
Though schedules varied
by location, students worked
on Habitat for Humanity sites
Monday through Friday.
Bruce Perry, assistant dean
of enrollment management
and student life at Salem State
joined students who chose to
travel to South Carolina.
of the spirit guiding our company.”
We look forward to the
future of her team achievements
and growth in the Lynnfield
office”.
“We are so excited and honored
to have accomplished
more from these trips than
what I contribute,” said Perry.
“Working side by side, together,
to make a new home
for someone is a powerful experience.
There’s something
transformative about making
a difference in someone’s life.
It touches and changes you in
ways that you don’t expect.”
A survey given after students
returned from the trip asked
what sparked their interest in
attending this volunteer experience.
Students’ replies were
positive, including, “I wanted
to give back to the community,”
to “I wanted to do something
impactful, and this trip gave me
that opportunity.”
Perry said these trips aim to
offer students “high-impact
practices, fostering great engagement
and deeper learning
this production level.” says
Youngren. “We want to thank
all of our clients that made this
possible. We appreciate their
business and trust, and look forward
to helping more families
with their moves this year.”
in a variety of ways such as
working as a team, cooperating
with others, and communicating
effectively.”
Every day
This is just one of several
service trips Salem State offers
to students. Other student
groups, like InterVarsity
and Latin American Student
Organization, volunteered in
Baton Rouge, LA and Puerto
Rico, respectively.
The Community Service
Initiative, the student organization
that sponsors these trips,
has been offering this Habitat
for Humanity experience to students
for the last 12 years, and
have volunteered at other sites including
New Orleans and Kansas
City. Because of the trips’ continued
success, students will be
offered this volunteering opportunity
again next spring.
