TOSCANA/MOOM TALAY DINING EXPERIENCE 

The Toscana Italian restaurant and associated 

Moom Talay Thai restaurant are, arguably, 

probably unique in Southeast Asia and, without 

any doubt at all, unique in Pattaya in the source 

of around 90 percent of the food and condiments 

served to their wide array of customers comes 

from the two organic farms operated by the 

owners. 

Luca Marchetti, mine host of Toscana, is justifiably 

proud of his organic vegetable farm and 

his separate organic animal farm which features 

a wide variety of creatures great and small, all 

of which contribute in a large way to the dining 

experiences in both Toscana and Moom Talay. 

While Luca admitted it would be cheaper to buy 

everything he and his wife sell in Moom Talay 

and Toscana from suppliers, he says, “How 

could I promote my food in my restaurant if I 

didn’t know where it came from?” 

Luca and his Thai wife have almost a lifetime 

experience in the restaurant trade, with Luca 

growing up on a farm in his native Tuscany in 

Italy, learning the secrets to good, wholesome 

food at the feet of his parents and grandparents. 

Whether it’s the meat adorning the pizza, pasta 

or ravioli dishes, or the butter for the homemade 

bread or the mayonnaise dressing or the ice 

cream for dessert, the absolute majority of the 

ingredients are grown, nurtured and sourced 

from one or both of the organic farms. 

Luca refuses to use any chemicals on his produce, 

preferring nature and nurture to provide 

the necessary abundance to keep the restaurant 

tables stocked with what really is fresh vegetable 

produce. 

The organic animal farm is situated in Huay 

Yai, is spread over 50,000 square metres and 

employs around eight staff to feed and care 

for a wide variety of animals, from pigs, goats 

and rabbits to chickens, ducks and geese. The 

central policy Luca and his staff employ on 

the farm is they let nature take its course. As 

Luca says, “We do not use antibiotics for the 

animals.” In recent times the animal farm has 

grown in size with addition of cows to provide 

organic milk. 

Bangkok, with restaurateurs realizing the quality 

and taste are second-to-none and must surely 

lead to a better dining experience for their own 

clientele. 

As for Toscana and Moom Talay, the fact that 

you’re dining, inside or outside, right across the 

road from the beach in what is usually a fine 

evening, the result is well worth making a special 

effort to experience and savour. 

Parking is easy. Just drive into the car park of 

the Tropicana Hotel, which is right alongside 

Toscana, take a ticket, have it stamped by the 

staff of either Moom Talay or Toscana, and the 

parking is free. 

Toscana and Moom Talay are open every day 

from midday until midnight.

FUTURE MASS TRANSIT LINES 

TO SHAPE BANGKOK’S 

PROPERTY SECTOR 

According to leading property 

analysts, new mass transit lines 

that are to be built across Bangkok 

will lead to significant changes 

in the property sector over the 

course of the next 10 years. 

There are 11 mass transit projects 

that will span a total of 480 kilometers 

due to be rolled out by 

2025. These include the Yellow 

line from Lat Phrao to Samrong, 

the Brown line from Khae Rai to 

Lam Sali, the Pink line from Khae 

Rai to Min Buri and the Orange 

line from Thailand Cultural Centre 

to Min Buri. 

Surapong Laoha-Unya, chief operating 

officer at Bangkok Mass 

Transit System Plc., (operator 

of the skytrain), was quoted as 

saying, “Land prices in locations 

along the skytrain and MRT rose 

by 10% per year on average, 

compared with an average increase 

of 3% in land prices in 

Bangkok.” 

He expects the effects on property 

prices along the new routes will 

be similar to those seen along 

the already established skytrain 

and MRT, noting that new housing 

supply is falling but condo supply 

along mass transit routes is rising, 

with a healthy sales rate of above 

70 per cent. 

The Skytrain has seen passenger 

numbers increase around 9 per 

cent per year each year since its 

completion in 1999. However the 

recently completed Purple line 

was less popular. 

Tritecha Tangmatitham, managing 

director of SET-listed developer 

Supalai Plc., was quoted as saying, 

“In locations along the Purple 

Line on Rattanathibet Road 

onwards, land prices are still low 

and traffic is not too heavy,” 

adding, “People usually prefer a 

single house or townhouse to a 

condo unit. This is why there are 

still several unsold condos there.” 

When the Purple Line was being 

constructed, there were many 

condo launches with a lot of supply 

coming on to the market. 

Mr. Tangmatitham was also quoted 

as saying, “The Purple Line is 

not popular as it takes longer and 

is more expensive than using a 

passenger van. Even when the 

missing link was connected, it did 

not matter.” 

However, as inner city prices grow 

to higher levels, new areas along 

the Yellow, Pink and Orange lines 

will allow the property market to 

offer more affordable alternatives. 

Chatchai Payuhanaveechai, chief 

executive and president of the 

Government Savings Bank was 

quoted as saying, “Foreigners 

will become a new market for 

the Bangkok property market 

as condos priced higher than 

300,000 baht per square meter 

may not be mainly for Thais,” adding, 

“Many wealthy Thais still want 

to live in a single house on a large 

plot of land.” 

The bank had researched the 

market and found that demand 

in Greater Bangkok rose 5.5 per 

cent while supply only rose 3.5 

per cent. This lead to an eleven per 

cent rise in total residential transaction 

values as prices moved 

higher.

At first this may be pleasing, but in fact all 

20 countries have what the World Health Organisation 

(WHO) considers serious pollution 

problems. Myanmar topped the table with a 

pollution reading index of 93.03. Thailand’s 

index rating was 72.86, marginally worse than 

the Philippines (72.55) but better than Vietnam 

(88.10) and Cambodia (79.41). 

JUST THE STATISTICS 

While bar charts, line graphs and simple numbers 

are hardly capable of providing the defining 

answer to many economic, social and political 

questions, they are certainly a good way of 

obtaining a general overview of any particular 

subject. 

Each month the Business Supplement will look 

into a brace of statistical information and provide 

readers with what we consider to be the central 

elements of these figures. 

Connectivity and social media usage 

According to We Are Social and Hootsuite, of 

the 7.6 billion people on the planet more than 

four billion are using the internet while some 66 

percent have a mobile phone. Over three billion 

people engage in social media, nine out of 10 

on mobile devices. 

For Thailand, it is estimated that 51 million (out 

of a population of 69 million) are social media users 

with annual user growth running at around 

11 percent. A regular user is somebody who 

claims they engage on a social media platform 

such as Facebook or Instagram at least once a 

day on average. 

By comparison with its neighbours in Asean, 

social media growth in Indonesia is growing at 

23 percent per year while Vietnam is growing 

at 20 percent, the Philippines at 12 percent and 

Malaysia and Singapore at nine percent each. 

Pollution remains a serious challenge in 

urban centres in Asia 

According to statistical evidence collated from a 

number of sources, air pollution in urban areas, 

based on the annual output of carbon dioxide,

the pavements (where they exist) in Bangkok 

is not considered a very sensible idea. 

Locked up in Thailand 

Recent statistical information from sources 

such as World Prison Brief and the Institute for 

Criminal Policy Research (ICPR), has placed 

Thailand as the number one country in Asia for 

incarcerating its citizens. 

In what is a sad indictment, Thailand averages 

476 people per 100,000 of the population doing 

time in prison. In real numbers there were 

over 322,000 people in 144 prisons, which 

only have an official capacity of 217,000. 

Thailand’s numbers far outnumber the next 

highest country in Asean, that being Singapore 

with 213 people per 100,000 in the ‘clink’. The 

Philippines has 172 per 100,000 in jail ahead 

of Malaysia with 167, Cambodia 159, Myanmar 

145, Vietnam 122, Laos 119 and Indonesia 89.

This month I thought we would look at what basic things to consider in 

a mobile phone. From what has been brought on to the market so far 

this year it appears that manufacturers are running out of ideas when it 

comes to innovation, so getting the basics right is important. 

1. Storage size 

Get a minimum of 16GB data storage. 

Apps have become much bigger and 

not all can use the removable Micro 

SD memory card. Phones with only 

8GB storage are now a source of 

constant frustration. 

2. Flipping around 

Random Access Memory (RAM) is 

the feature that makes your phone 

seem ‘fast’ when it’s running several 

big apps. Aim for more than 1GB 

of RAM. 2GB is the minimum for 

gamers 

3. Hard body 

Metal phone bodies are not necessarily 

more durable than plastic 

ones, and they can hamper your 

reception. However, metal finishes 

definitely indicate a higher-grade 

product overall. 

4. Camera complexity 

Phone cameras with the High Dynamic 

Range (HDR) feature take 

much better photos in complex 

settings with a mix of bright and dark 

areas. Note: this is still rare on budget 

phones, though. 

5. Magic touch 

Fingerprint sensors are becoming 

more and more common, even on 

budget phones. They’re convenient 

for unlocking the phone quickly and 

could also be used for secure payments 

from your smartphone in the 

near future. Some phones even allow 

your fingerprints to unlock your 

phone, and then startup an app. 

So your thumb could start up your 

camera, index finger Facebook etc. 

6. Soft screen 

Screen protectors are largely unnecessary. 

They’re made of plastic that 

scratches far more easily than the 

chemically hardened glass on your 

phone screen that can withstand 

car keys and coins in your pocket. 

7. Power banks 

Power banks are rated in milliamp 

hours (mAh), the same as your 

smartphone battery. If you carry a 

power bank, then your power bank 

should be bigger than your phone 

battery because 20% of the power is 

lost in the charging process. 

Then having got your phone, one 

of the biggest running expenses 

can be the use of mobile data, so 

consider the following: 

1. USE APPS TO TRACK DATA 

CONSUMPTION 

Use your phone’s built-in application 

or download a third-party application 

to track how much data you are using. 

They will tell you which applications 

are using the most data so you 

can consider deleting them. 

2. DELETE UNDERUSED APPS 

AND UPDATE THOSE YOU DO USE 

Applications that aren’t in use may 

still use data in the background. 

Consider deleting them and keep 

the ones you use updated – you can 

also specify ‘update on Wi-Fi only’ to 

save your mobile data. 

3. DON’T PUT VIDEOS ON AUTO- 

PLAY 

Videos are fun to watch, but they 

can consume data very quickly. Setting 

applications like Facebook and 

Instagram not to autoplay videos will 

save you a chunk of data. 

4. USE DATA-SAVING APPS AND 

BROWSERS 

Chrome and Opera mobile browsers 

are renowned for their data-saving 

features. Both use data-saver technologies 

that reduce the size of the 

information a device downloads. 

5. BUY A DATA BUNDLE AND 

LOWER YOUR MONTHLY DATA 

CHARGES 

Measure your average data spend 

per month to see whether your current 

data bundle is the right size for 

you. If you use more data than you 

receive on a monthly basis, increase 

or add another bundle to your contract. 

Typically paying for extra data 

that is over and above your included 

amount can be very expensive.

CENTRAL BANK SEES ECONOMIC GROWTH EXCEED EXPECTATIONS 

Thailand’s economic growth has exceeded 

expectations according to the Central Bank 

Governor, Mr.Veerathai Santiprabhob. However 

he indicated that interest rates could stay low 

since inflation is still relatively muted, even 

though there is a shift to a bias of higher rates 

globally. 

The last Central Bank forecast in December 

2017 indicated a growth rate of 3.9 per cent in 

2018, but there is speculation that the Central 

Bank may revise its forecast upward in the near 

future. 

Mr.Veerathai Santiprabhob was quoted as saying, 

“The momentum since we announced the last 

forecast has exceeded our expectations.” 

He was pleased by a rise in import numbers 

suggesting that this was indicative of increased 

capital investment. However at the same time 

he was mindful of risks to the recovery. 

Mr. Santiprabhob was also quoted as saying, 

“Even though it has become more broad-based, 

I think it needs to be supported by accommodative 

monetary policy. There is not much inflationary 

pressures now in Thailand.” 

Tops Daily to feature Kerry Express drop-off 

points 

Kerry Express delivery service will enter into a 

partnership with Tops Daily mini supermarket in 

order to provide drop off points for its next-day 

nationwide delivery service. 

The rollout will initially cover 47 selected 

branches and will be expanded to 70 outlets. 

The move comes after Tops Daily expanded 

its offerings to include other niche services including 

recently added breakfast corners, bill 

payment services, and co working spaces. 

Ms. Phattaraporn Phenpraphat, executive 

vice-president of Central Food Retail was quoted 

as saying, “Kerry Express is the ideal partner to 

echo these concepts, as its extensive network 

allows it to provide outstanding services at very 

competitive prices.” 

The tie up with Kerry Express is to meet the 

demands of young online business owners 

who need to send their goods to customers. 

Director and general manager of Kerry Express, 

Michael Choi, was quoted as saying, 

“We are very happy to partner with Central 

Food Retail, and we believe Tops Daily is only 

the beginning. The group’s vision in serving 

online entrepreneurs and SMEs coincides 

very much with this belief. We trust that social 

commerce has an important future in Thailand.” 

Ikea increasing its presence in Thailand 

Ikano Private Limited, the owner of the 

Ikea furniture franchise in Thailand, recently 

opened its second Ikea store. The 50,278 

square meter store is located in Bang Yai, 

Nonthaburi, next to the Central West Shopping 

center. 

Thomas Friberg, store manager at Ikea Bang 

Yai was quoted as saying, “We have ambitious 

plans to grow in Thailand, striving to realise 

our vision of creating better everyday lives for 

people here and in Southeast Asia. Now you 

can come and shop at Ikea stores in eastern 

and western Bangkok, with outlets set to open 

in the northeast and southwest.” 

The Bang Yai store represents an investment 

of 6.3 billion baht. The company has also 

purchased a 1.5 million square meter plot of 

land in Rangsit for future development.

Thailand was the third largest market for 

PHEVs by ratio for BMW, with the number 

of PHEVs sold amounting to nearly one-seventh 

of all BMW cars in the Thai market. In 

first place was Malaysia, where BMW’s PHEV 

sales were nearly half of all its cars sold and 

in second place was Scandinavia, where just 

over a quarter of sales were PHEV’s. The aim 

is to bring Thailand’s ratio up to 20 per cent or 

even 25 per cent in 2018. 

BMW TO INVEST IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE 

PLANT EXPANSION 

BMW Group Manufacturing Thailand has allocated 

400 million baht to upgrade its production 

plant to make electric vehicles. The plant will 

expand into an extra area of 5,000 square meters, 

a twelve per cent increase on the current 

space of 45,000 square meters. The plant is 

located in Rayong at the Amata City industrial 

park. 

Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV’s) are 

to be manufactured at the site. The company 

also expects to start producing the batteries for 

the cars from 2019. BMW has applied for Board 

of Investment privileges for the project, under 

a special government electric vehicle scheme. 

Jeffrey Gaudiano, Managing director and chief 

executive of BMW Group Manufacturing Thailand, 

(a local arm of the German car maker), 

was quoted as saying, “We have to prepare in 

advance for both vehicle and battery assembly 

lines to seek more suppliers and purchase new 

tools under the EV platform, as we can move 

more slowly than others,” adding, “BMW is in 

the process of concluding talks on this project 

with government agencies, including the BoI.” 

BMW joins its European counterpart Mercedes- 

Benz in taking advantage of the government 

scheme. The latter company is one step ahead 

and is already producing batteries for PHEVs. 

There is much excitement about the PHEV 

market in Thailand on the part of BMW especially 

considering that in 2017, year on year 

PHEV sales rocketed 269 per cent. 

Stefan Teuchert, president of BMW Group 

Thailand, was quoted as saying, “We believe 

in the future electrification trend in the Thai 

automotive market, but it is not easy to make 

EVs locally when the market is still small and 

local motorists have limited experience with 

new generation vehicles,” adding, “an important 

thing is to import and introduce innovative EV 

cars to give motorists the necessary experience, 

helping grow the market.” 

Currently, BMW assembles four PHEVs in 

Rayong for the domestic market, these being 

the X5 xDrive40e, 740Le, 530e, and the 

330e. However the batteries are still made in 

Europe. The company’s PHEV sports model 

i8 is also imported from Europe for sale in the 

Thai market. 

The company is celebrating its 100,000th 

vehicle rolling off the production line from the 

Rayong plant. Of these 90,000 were cars and 

the rest were motorbikes. The 100,000th 

vehicle was a 530e.

Completely homegrown burgers 

now a lunch feature in Toscana 

The Toscana Italian restaurant began April by introducing a new lunch-time 

special menu featuring a range of burgers. The new menu is designed to appeal 

to those people who may have spent the morning on Pattaya beach and just 

want to skip across the road and have a quick and easy bite to eat before either 

going back to spend the rest of the day on the beach, or return to their hotel to 

get ready for the evening. 

What separates the Toscana burger offering from the numerous burger places dotted 

along Beach Road and elsewhere, is that all the ingredients are 

sourced from one of the two organic farms operated by 

the restaurant on the outskirts of Pattaya. 

Whether it’s the burger patty itself 

- and this is available in a wide 

variety of meats from pork to 

chicken to veal to lamb and 

even goat - to the lettuce, 

tomato, or any other garnishing 

to the butter and 

the bread roll itself, it is all 

produced from the farms.

Of course, the hot weather at this time of 

year also encourages indulgence in desserts, 

and the Toscana menu is replete with 

the most natural selection of ice creams 

and sorbets. All the desserts are made 

from natural ingredients, all of which are 

sourced from the organic farms and prefreshest 

taste but sets the Toscana burger 

menu apart from anywhere else in Pattaya 

as having the most natural, organicallygrown 

ingredients, a claim no-one else can 

make. 

The aim of the burger menu is to encourage 

people to feel they can simply drop in 

to Toscana without the need to get too 

formal when it comes to attire. It is also 

meant to encourage people to partake 

of an easy selection of dishes, not just 

burgers. From cheese platters for one or

the choices are almost endless.

The compact SUV is 4,395mm long with short 

front and rear overhangs of 882mm and 832mm 

respectively. Its 2,681mm wheelbase seats five 

in absolute comfort and yields a generous rear 

legroom of 892mm while the large luggage 

capacity of 577 litres is made possible by the 

vehicle’s sophisticated Integral Link rear suspension 

architecture. 

New chassis hardware developed for the 

E-PACE maximises interior space while also 

providing the strong foundations for the vehicle’s 

impressive all-surface dynamic capabilities. 

The Integral Link rear suspension layout 

has allowed Jaguar’s engineers to deliver the 

responsiveness and agility required without 

compromising ride comfort.

slightly from 43.86 to 43.81 

The USD/JPY cross rate has also seen a very 

quiet time with Dollar stability underpinning the 

pair. The Yen did move from 106.01 to as high 

as 107.55 before dropping back to 105.96. 

Against the Thai Baht, the Yen’s movement 

was like a millpond starting the month at 

0.2945, rising to 0.2971 and then falling back 

again to exactly the same level. 

FOREIGN CURRENCY UPDATE 

The US Dollar rose slightly but there could be 

more to the modest move than meets the eye. 

On the one hand, expected interest rate rises 

are pushing the dollar higher, whilst on the 

other hand the recent trade tariffs imposed by 

the U.S. arguably sent the dollar lower. The net 

effect has been that these important news 

stories have cancelled each other out and so 

there was not much movement overall for the 

US Dollar. The DXY Dollar index, (an index 

that measures the US Dollar’s value against a 

number of other currencies), rose from a low of 

89.01 to hit 90.19. Against the Thai Baht, the 

Dollar moved from 31.28 to 31.22, a very modest 

move indeed. 

The British Pound dropped from a high of 

1.4028 against the Dollar to move as low as 

1.3728 before rebounding to 1.3934 and onto 

1.4150. The 1.38 to 1.42 range appears to be 

holding and with Dollar moves hard to find, 

volatility could continue to be low. The BOE has 

continued to signal that higher UK interest rates 

may be on the cards in the future, so there could

only real mover with some weakening against 

the U.S. Dollar seen over the course of the last 

month. It moved from 56.20 to 57.52, an approximately 

two percent move. There seems 

little to explain the move given that the dollar 

has been so stable, however you would have 

to look towards local news surrounding the 

Ruble to find any reason for its isolated weakening. 

When compared to the Thai Baht, a 

similar move took place with the pair losing 

ground from 0.5560 to hit 0.5427, a loss of 

around two percent also. 

The Euro/USD rate moved in a choppy fashion 

during the last month from a high of 1.2418 

to hit a low of 1.2180 before recovering to 

1.2302. Given that the Euro forms the largest 

part of the basket of currencies that trades 

against the US Dollar it is unsurprising to see 

generally sideways movement. Against the 

Thai Baht, the Euro saw some modest weakening 

in line with its movement against the US 

Dollar, falling slightly from 38.89 to 38.41.

DDPROPERTY’S PROPERTY PRICE 

INDEX SEEN TRENDING HIGHER 

According to leading online property 

portal, DDproperty, Bangkok’s 

property prices are expected to 

continue to grow, with a clear 

trend in place. DDproperty maintains 

a property price index, which 

is a good indicator of the health of 

the property market. The price index 

climbed three per cent in the 

last quarter of 2017 to 205. 

Ms. Kamolpat Swaengkit, country 

manager for DDproperty, a 

division of PropertyGuru Group, 

was quoted as saying, “Although 

the index grew at a slower pace 

in the last quarter of 2017, the 

3% (quarter-on-quarter) q-o-q increase 

maintained the positive 

momentum of Bangkok’s property 

market. This indicates that 

the Thai capital, and indeed, the 

whole country, have gradually recovered 

from the economic slowdown, 

while consumer purchasing 

power, especially in the upperand 

middle-end segments, has 

improved.” 

DDproperty’s property price index 

has grown more than 100 per cent 

since its inception in 2015. The 

condominium sector remains the 

strongest with the highest prices 

recorded on a price per square 

meter basis. Town houses were 

also strong showing seven per 

cent quarter-on-quarter growth 

and 14 per cent year-on-year 

growth. 

In terms of locations, Chat-u-Chak 

was the leader posting 5 per cent 

growth quarter-on-quarter with 

Bang Na in second place at 3 per 

cent. Bang Na prices have risen 

75 per cent in the last three years. 

Luxury properties with price points 

above 15 million baht increased 

more than other properties at lower 

price points, with 12 per cent 

year-on-year growth and 39 per 

cent growth over the last 2 years. 

Ms. Swaengkit was also quoted 

as saying, “Overall residential 

property prices are tentatively 

set to continue appreciating as 

progress on mega infrastructure 

projects continues. Meanwhile, 

the 20-year national strategy 

(from 2017-2036) is expected to 

stimulate residential development 

in Bangkok and other cities, especially 

those in the Eastern Economic 

Corridor.” 

DDproperty also maintains a 

supply index tracking property 

supply in the market. The index fell 

by seven per cent to 240 indicating 

that supply is tightening due to 

aggressive marketing on the part 

of condo developers. However, 

the supply index is expected to 

post a rise going forward. 

Ms. Swaengkit was further quoted 

as saying, “Supply will remain at 

high levels as many developers 

have several new projects in the 

pipeline for 2018, while take-up 

rates are still low. But we don’t 

think this will lead to an oversupply 

issue as developers are monitoring 

the situation and are ready to 

calibrate supply to maintain desired 

price levels.” 

She added, “Sellers will benefit 

from increasing prices in the current 

residential property market 

in Bangkok. The index has grown 

over 100% in less than three 

years. But buyers can also take 

advantage of low interest rates 

and competitive offers from sellers 

and developers, who are under 

pressure to reduce [the quantity 

of] remaining units and release 

new inventory into the market.”

Property Limited recently celebrated the start 

of construction of One Bangkok with a groundbreaking 

ceremony, marking the first major 

milestone for Thailand’s largest integrated district. 

The project has received Environmental Impact 

Assessment (EIA) approval, enabling the THB 

120 billion (US$3.5 billion) development to 

begin. Mr. Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, Chairman 

of TCC Group and Frasers Property, and 

Dr. Chirayu Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, Director 

General of the Crown Property Bureau, presided 

over the ceremony, joined by Directors, Senior 

Executives and key stakeholders. 

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Panote Sirivadhanabhakdi, 

Group CEO of Frasers Property

as we commence construction on One Bangkok, 

we also begin an exciting new chapter in Thailand’s

The joint venture between TCC Assets and Frasers 

Property will cover 104-rai (16.7 hectares) 

in prime central Bangkok. Located at the corner 

of Wireless Road and Rama IV Road, adjacent 

to Lumphini Park, it will feature unsurpassed 

accessibility through direct connections to the 

city’s mass transit systems and easy access to 

the expressway network. With a total gross floor 

area (GFA) of 1.83 million sq.m., One Bangkok 

is the largest private sector property development 

initiative ever undertaken in Thailand, 

comprising five premium Grade A office towers 

built to LEED* and WELL** standards; five 

luxury and lifestyle hotels; three ultra-luxury 

residential towers; four distinctive retail zones; 

and a cultural hub and performance centre.

BOEING DELIVERS FIRST 737 MAX 9 

Boeing [NYSE: BA] and the Lion Air Group 

celebrated the very first 737 MAX 9 to be 

delivered. The airplane will go into service with 

Thai Lion Air, where its added capacity will help 

the airline launch several international routes. 

“The 737 MAX 9 is a perfect fit for our growing 

business in Thailand,” said Capt. Darsito 

Hendro Seputro, CEO and Chairman of Thai 

Lion Air. “The 737 has been the backbone of 

our business since we began and we will use 


the added capacity the airplane provides to 

expand our network and start additional routes 

to Bangladesh, China and India.” 

The Lion Air Group is the launch customer for 

the MAX 9. They were also the first operator 

to put the MAX 8 into service, and have announced 

a commitment for 50 MAX 10s. The 

Group also has an additional 200 737 MAXs on 

order and is one of the world’s largest operators 

of the 737. 

The 737 MAX family is designed to offer 

customers exceptional performance, with 

lower per-seat costs and an extended range 

that is opening up new destinations in the 

single-aisle market. The 737 MAX incorporates 

the latest CFM International LEAP-1B 

engines, Advanced Technology winglets, 

Boeing Sky Interior, large flight deck displays 

and other features to deliver the highest efficiency, 

reliability and passenger comfort in the 

single-aisle market.
