SET OUR SAILS
“ We cannot send revival, but we can set our sails to catch the wind when God chooses
to blow upon His people.” These are the wise words of Campbell Morgan in his book.
Recently, I had the privilege of listening to
the real life testimonies of several pastors
and leaders of the SIB Church in Sabah.
Even as they ushered in the year of
Jubilee and blew the trumpet
(Lev.25:9&10) miracles started to happen
just two weeks before 16 September 2012.
Revival has hit the shores of East
Malaysia. The effects of God’s visitation
were so amazing and real.
I believe a similar visitation is ours to
experience too. However we need to
prepare for it. The first and best
preparation would be to turn to God
wholeheartedly. This is the call that John
the Baptist issued in the wilderness –
“Repent”. He was calling to people for a
total abandonment of the carnal and
fleshly lifestyle. This is essential as a
prelude to receiving the King.
Michael Catt – in his book ‘Prepare for
Rain’ talks about two farmers who were
experiencing a dry spell. Both prayed.
Then one farmer decided to go to his land
to plough and while the other farmer wait
for the rain. Faith is moving into action
knowing God will act. The rain will fall
when prayer and faith meet.
We need to ‘prepare for rain’ and the best
way to do it is to begin ‘ploughing the land’.
We read in Hosea 10:12 “……break up
your unplowed ground for it is time to seek
the Lord, until He comes and showers
righteousness on you”. Another very
important pre-requisite –preparation is a
broken heart and a contrite spirit.
Otherwise, we would never be able to
experience this move of God in our midst.
So often we get swayed by the things of
the world. We are driven by love of money,
property comfort, security, popularity and
a host of other things. What about our
churches? Are we just maintaining status
quo and merely managing the church? Is
our emphasis on carrying out a few
programmes and efficiently producing
reports. Are we satisfied to just carry on
without seeing lives touched and the
impact of the transforming power of the
gospel? Are we bickering and fighting for
power and recognition?
We need to turn away from all the lesser
callings in life and ministry and respond to
the highest calling God has given to us to
love Him and serve Him. We need to
repent from all the cares and pleasures of
this world which so easily overpowers us.
We need to submit to God’s word. The SIB
brothers shared that they obeyed God in
everything – that was the secret.
This is the ploughing that we need to do so
that a highway can be built in our hearts to
receive the King.
Can we talk of revival or renewal when we
are not willing to ‘set the sail’ to catch the
wind?
Let us seriously take stock of our lives.
May we positions our sails in the direction
of the wind. Then the mighty wind of
revival will touch and transform our
churches too.
- Rev. Dr. A.E. Joseph -
Introduction:
All sincere Methodists desire to live a Christian life that pleases God, but in actuality they feel
completely at a loss as what to do. To enjoy our rights and freedom in society, we have certain
responsibilities to perform before we can enjoy the blessings of God.
1. RESPONSIBILITY OF WORSHIP:
Rev. 4:11 – we were created to worship our
heavenly Father. Unbelievers worship
worldly material things, but when we
become Christians, we have the daily
responsibility of worshipping God.
- Our worship is God-centred.
- Response to God’s initiative among us.
- Related to life at its deepest level.
- Expression of our obedience to God.
- All of life is worship.
- All worship (formal and spontaneous)
must be open and sensitive to the Holy
Spirit.
2. RESPONSIBILITY OF
SANCTIFICATION:
Once we are converted and washed by the
living blood of Jesus, then, we must live a
sanctified life.
Without sanctification, we cannot come to
the Lord and plead our cause with Him.
3. RESPONSIBILITY OF BIBLE STUDY:
By studying the Word of God we
understand our Lord Jesus Christ better
and we can be better acquainted with the
workings of God. It is our responsibility and
obligation to know God better through the
study of the Bible everyday.
4. RESPONSIBILITY OF PRAYER:
Prayer is like breathing. As a Methodist, if
we stop praying, it is as if we stopped
breathing.
Of course, you know if you stop breathing,
you will die. If we stop praying regularly,
then, our spiritual life will die. Pray
constantly.
5. RESPONSIBILITY OF WITNESSING:
Witnessing is like exercising. In order to
have a healthy body, we must have regular
exercise.
To be a healthy Methodist, we must be
soul-winners in our daily lives.
As we feed on the Word of God and
continue breathing spiritually by our
prayers, then, we should exercise by
witnessing for Jesus to unbelievers – doing
our best to lead them to Christ.
A Methodist with no sense of Missions has
lost sight of the meaning of the incarnation
and his own salvation. Expressions in
witnessing – life-style and non-verbal
communication.
6. RESPONSIBILITY OF SERVICE:
We must carry out our ministry of service
into the world (unto the Lord) in material
things as well as our physical effort for the
Lord. As we carry out our responsibilities,
then we can claim the promises of our Lord.
In the Bible we find many wonderful
promises of God. His promises are there in
abundance, but we cannot just claim the
promise of God at random.
7. RESPONSIBILITY TO THE
COMMUNITY:
- The embodiment of fellowship – no
isolated Christianity (Methodism).
- Called to participate in the ongoing
programmes of the church and
community.
- A covenant relationship.
4

8. RESPONSIBILTY OF FAITH:
- Commitment to the Lord and the
given task must be total.
- Submission to God without
submission to others is empty –
submission develops the community.
9. RESPONSIBILITY OF SHARING:
- Sharing ourselves – being open to
change, being willing to die to the old.
- Encouraging each other.
10. RESPONSIBILITY OF DISCERNING:
- Seeking God’s will.
- Unity in decisions.
11. RESPONSIBILITY TO DISCIPLINE:
- Work of the Holy Spirit is severely
hindered if relationships are not
straightened out in the church.
- We are not perfect – be on guard!
- Accountability.
- Be sensitive to anything that offends
others.
- Important to be humble but also
open and direct.
- The goal of all discipline is
reconciliation.
12. RESPONSIBILITY TO NON-
CONFORMITY:
- Conformity to Jesus Christ.
- Our task – to live out God’s purpose.
- Ready to suffer for the sake of Christ.
DEVELOPING YOUR ATTITUDE AS A METHODIST:
A. Spirit of brotherhood – partnership with others without compromise
B. Belonging TO GOD – through divine son ship.
- significance and purpose for living and executing God’s plan for one’s
life.
C. Belonging TO OURSELVES – Not to hate ourselves or our families.
e.g. through guilt, inferiority complex, etc.
- danger of living in a world of fantasy.
- loving ourselves will result in loving others.
D. Belonging TO ONE ANOTHER – Paul’s body concept.
E. Commit yourself to people – a part of a complex network of relationships.
F. Develop your gifts – encourage and motivate others to develop their gifts.
G. Discern your ministry/calling: - what do you like doing?
- what are you good at doing?
- what do other people think?
- submit to your leaders – do not be critical or rebellious.
Northern District 1 st May Family DAY
SJK (T) Saraswathy School Hall @9.30am
ND Family Day Fun and Fellowship for All
It’s been a long time coming but
finally the Northern District
churches came together on 1 st
May at SJK (T) Saraswathy School
Hall, Sungai Petani for a Family
Day gathering on a bright and
sunny day. The crowd of about
380 congregated in the hall for the
service after breakfast. Rev.
Joseph Yesupatham introduced
the District Superintendent, Rev. Dennis Raj, his wife and children to the congregation. The
worship service began with the opening prayer by Rev. Samuel Periathamby followed by the
congregation song, ‘Enthan navil puthu pattu’. Rev. Stephen Gunaraja led the responsive reading
from Psalm 133. TMC Kepala Batas did the praise and adoration led by Mr. Jonathan. Rev.
Jevaretnam Sowria then proceeded with the pastoral prayer and the coming elections. The bible
reading was done by Rev. Ezekiel Raj in Tamil and Rev. Ruben Rajandurai in English.
Rev. Dennis Raj congratulated the District Lay Leader, Mr. Shamkumar and the leaders for
organizing the get together before sharing the word of God from 1 Chronicles 19:1-5. He
informed that relationships are important and God always establishes relationships, it began
since Adam and Eve’s time. God never breaks any relationships. Based on the text, he drew the
comparison that David tried to renew the relation with Hanun. Nevertheless, agents of Satan,
bad advisors, influenced Hanun. Similarly, there will be people who try to break relationships.
He reminded that we should not be like that. David was also sensitive towards his officers and
their feelings. We must also strive to safeguard the honor of people. In Ephesians 4:3, we read
about unity in the spirit. Others must not be humiliated because of me. He concluded by
appealing to the congregation to have fun and fellowship through the games. The service came
to an end with a chorus led by Mr. Jonathan and closing prayer and benediction by Rev. Joseph.
Immediately after that Mr. Shamkumar gave his greetings. He thanked everyone for coming,
especially those who supported and encouraged him. He said we will do better in the coming
years.
Rev. Joseph then requested those who are still single and eligible to come forward. A group of
11 brave singles stepped
forward; 4 guys and 7
girls. He reminded that
as a family of God we
have the responsibility
to find life partners for
each of them. After
which, Rev. Joseph
prayed over them for
God’s leading and wisdom.
7

After the service all were requested to
gather at the adjacent field for the
games. The games session started off
with aerobics to warm up the bodies
in preparation of the games. The main
event was the ‘tarik-tali’. Perhaps due
to lack of adult members, some
women from TMC Jerai joined in
followed by others from TMC SP. This
sportsmanship showed by some of the
women was truly admirable. In the end, the champion for the tug of war competition was TMC
Penang beating TMC KB in the final. This was followed by some games for the children; sack race
etc. The boys and men participated in the 7-a-side futsal which went on concurrently at the side.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Ruth Ravi and team had a coloring competition in the hall for some young
children. Praise God, we had some drinks; 100 plus, VICO and Sunquick sponsored by TMC
Penang church member. In the meantime, people started having their lunch and when the futsal
was over at 2.30 pm, all gathered in the hall for the closing prayer.
Overall, all had a good time of fellowshipping. This is
indeed a new beginning for the northern district churches.
Let us hope and look forward for better days and greater
ministries as we unite ourselves for the sake of the gospel
and the kingdom of God.
TRAINING ON SOCIAL CONCERNS MINISTRIES
Praise the Lord! God made it possible for more than 50 church members and pastors of the Tamil
Methodist Church all around Malaysia to attend a training session on social concerns ministries
at Wisma TAC, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur on the 15 th June 2013 from 9.00a.m till 2.30pm. We
would like to take this opportunity to share with everyone as to how the Lord has taught us many
new things through this training.
The day started with a
registration session at
9.00a.m followed by an
opening prayer and a
wonderful worship session
lead by Rev Kunabalan. From
9.30a.m to 10.30a.m, Rev
Raymond Raj conducted a
session whereby he briefed
us of the challenges before us
especially on financial
matters. He emphasised the
importance of physical need
for the society besides
spiritual needs met with the
bible quote from James 2:14-
17. We realised that working
at transforming people or
community via proclamation
or through acts of
compassion are both
authentic expressions of the
Gospel. Just immediately
after the session, Mr Achu
Naidu took about 10-15
minutes to update us on the
Nehemiah Project which has
been started last year. There
will be a second round of
visitation by the committee
to raise more funds and
establish new frontiers as
planned. A short coffee
fellowship was served with
cakes to accommodate the
upcoming session after that.
About 11.15a.m, Rev
Timothy Krishnan shared on
community services which
can be held in respective
churches to meet the social
needs among the Malaysian
community. A brief guideline
was given in a form of a
handout as well. Pastor also
highlighted a bible verse
James 4:17 to remind us of
the importance of doing
good. It was a surprise
birthday celebration for our
TAC president, Rev C. Jayaraj
after the session. Next, we
had the privilege to hear the
testimony and sharing by Mrs
Bridget David and by Ps Jacop
David himself who is also the
founder of The Shepherd’s
Centre Foundation in
Semenyih. His sharing was
mainly based on how the
Lord gave him and his wife
the strength to not only start
the ministry for the children
who are orphaned,
abandoned, abused, and
neglected from broken
families but to run it by faith.
He also briefed us of the
importance to have a
responsible administration
to conduct a home. The
knowledgeable explanation
provided with humours was
indeed very informative and
inspirational. His wife on the
other hand gave a
presentation with pictures of
the activities carried out in
their home. We were awe by
the way it was conducted as
each special occasion (Easter,
Chinese New Year,
Deepavali, Independence
Day etc) was celebrated
grandly amidst races.
Scrumptious lunch was
provided just before the next
session.
Another session of praise and
worship was conducted after
lunch to gear us up for the
next interesting session. The
speaker, Mr Rajagopal was
there to brief us on the free
9

education (Desa Mentari Education Centre).
He started off with a small testimony of how
God opened his eyes to start free tuition
centres (fully air-conditioned with tables and
chairs) to help the poor. Through the ministry,
he quoted Jeremiah 2:20, God used him as a
vessel to reach out to the poor students as
well as to share and talk about the love of
Christ to their parents. He also encouraged us
to heed to the call of social concern ministries
around us. Lastly, we had the opportunity to
listen from Mr Mohan Moses about the new
TAC Co-operative which was registered under
Akta Koperasi 1993 on 6 August 2012 in the
areas of Wilayah Persekutuan (KL), Selangor
and Perak to all TMC members of the age 18
years and above. The project activities that
were planned were basically provision and
laundry shop, bookstore, hair saloon,
insurance agency and car wash. The main aim
of the cooperative was to raise the socioeconomic
status of its members and also to
maintain a vision of helping the poor and
needy through cooperative projects.
Finally, before we departed at 3.00p.m to our
respective destination, we had Rev C. Jayaraj
with us to do the closing and give us the
benediction. He encouraged each of us to be
persistent in our own social concern
ministries. We will face many hurdles, rules
and regulations, but he urged us to overcome
all to shine for the Lord. He also thanked the
TAC Social Concern Board for their effort in
organising this meaningful training with full
support by the president himself. The
members of the TAC Social Concern Board
would like to take this opportunity to thank all
those who have prayed, participated and
supported the training. We would also like to
thank Rev C. Jayaraj for his presence and
dedication for this meaningful event. Above
all, we want to thank our Lord for this fruitful
event. Thank you!
TAMIL METHODIST CHURCH ULU KELANG
CHILDREN CAMP 2013
24TH MAY 2013 – 26TH MAY 2013
THEME:
“JOSHUA GENERATION – HOW TO BE A SUCCESSFUL
GENERATION IN CHRIST”
Tamil Methodist Church Ulu Kelang (TMC UK) organised its Children Camp this year from 24th
May 2013 until 26th May 2013, at the premises of TMC UK at the Methodist Centre, Ulu Kelang.
This year, we were privileged to have the teachers and children of TMC Cheras, TMC Sungai Besi-
Serdang, TMC Rawang and TMC Selayang joining us for the first time and we were indeed blessed
with the fun, laughter and fellowship which we shared with each other. A total of 73 children
between the ages of 5 and 16 participated in this Children Camp, with the number of adults
(teachers, volunteers and helpers) exceeding 50!
The theme observed was “Joshua Generation – How To Be A Successful Generation in Christ”.
The focus was on the journey of the Israelites, led by Joshua, into the Promised Land and the
lessons that can be learnt to lead a victorious life in Christ. The theme was divided in 4 principal
lessons / sub-themes which comprised of the following:
1. How to WIN [Watchful, In the Lord, No Doubt] – By Trusting God (By Having Faith in
God) – To Overcome Fear
2. How to SCORE [Strong, Courageous, Obey, Read, Enjoy] – By Obeying God (By Reading
God’s Word) – To Overcome Enemies
3. How to PASS [Problem, Action, Solution & Success] – By Seeking God (By Enquiring God
for Solution / Answers) – To Overcome Problems
4. How to be FIRST [Follow Instructions, Reject Sin, Triumph] – By Following God’s
Instructions (By Keeping God’s Commands) – To Overcome Sin
We were indeed blessed to
have 4 dynamic speakers –
Ponraj Navamani, Kingston
Sujit, Rajes Paul and Shobana
Chandran - who took the
time and effort to prepare
and share each lesson with
much excitement and
enthusiasm. Our heartfelt
gratitude to all 4 of them! We
are also very thankful to
Pastor Moses Jeyaseelan
who gave an interesting
introduction on missions and
evangelism to the children
under the theme “Missions
Possible” and our very own
Pastor, Rev. Herbert D. John,
who not only shared during
the Family Hour, but also
participated and spent time
with the children for all 3
days with much joy and
enthusiasm, as always.
Apart from the general and
classroom lessons based on
the theme, there were other
fun and interesting activities
such as Camp Fire Nite, Tribal
Show, Family Hour (Talent
Time Nite) and Station
Games. It was not only an
exciting time of learning and
participating in the various
activities, but the most
exciting of all for the children
was bed-time! The Children
Camp was this year organized
as a ‘stay-over’ camp and for
most of them, it was their
first-time experience staying
away from home without
their parents. But the
organizers were truly amazed
12

y the excitement and
courage showed by those as
young as 6 or 7 who adjusted
to sleeping in classrooms and
hostel rooms of their own
without adult presence – in
fact, we had ‘trouble’ getting
them to stop chatting or
having their own wrestling
competition and to sleep on
time!
One of the most significant
parts of this year’s Children
Camp was the Food section -
we were indeed graciously
delighted to have the
Methodist Women of TMC
UK volunteering to cook and
serve all of us for the entire 3
days, with the Methodist
Women’s room at TMC UK
being instantly turned into a
‘catering-business’ like
compound! Our mothers,
aunties, sisters and even
grandmothers worked
tirelessly to serve us the best
of sumptuous delights – food
cooked with much love and
translated into mouthwatering
delicious spread
that was truly enjoyed by the
young and old. A big shout
out of thankfulness to our
Methodist Women!
We are very much thankful to
all members of TMC UK, as
well as the participating
churches, for all the help,
support and assistance given,
especially the prayers that
kept us going. May the Good
Lord continue to anoint our
children with His strength
and power and make them a
successful generation like the
Joshua Generation. All Glory
& Honour to Him!
In His Service,
Missions’ Glimpse, BOM/MMM - TAC
JUNE 2013 (Vol/No.2)
MYANMAR : VBS/Micro Credit
The project is still in progress. Another
meeting will be held later this year to give
more info and attend to some of their
questions.
1. We are also looking at the prospect of
starting more community centers, and
also appointing a Missions coordinator
with long term visa.
2. MMM continues to support 4 community
centers. We receive regular reports from
these centers. Most of these centers are
reaching out to children.
Nang Pan Missions trip
1. The council of missions and CAC churches
made a trip to Nang Pan( Shan State in
Myanmar) from13th of May to 21sth of May
to dedicate two new churches among the
Hakka tribe and to see the prospect of
Building a Methodist Mission School.
2. CAC with their trained workers in Thailand
along the Mekong river. They are venturing
into a great task.
3. In addition, the Government has offered a
land to the CAC to build a school for the
children living in Nang Pan District.
4. This is a great opportunity to provide care
and nurture for the children in the ways of the
Lord and to raise a future generation of men
and women of faith in the society and nation.
5. As this is a big mission project, the Council
of Missions wish that all the Annual
conferences should unite and support in
realizing this vision.
6. This is also an opportunity for all the
Annual Conferences to do missions as a
Methodist family in a cross cultural setting.
7. A report will be compiled soon to be sent to
all the churches to have a better idea of the
whole project.
8. In this missions trip I was personally
touched by CAC’S effort to reach people in the
remote mountainous region of Shan state of
Myanmar. Their sincere and selfless giving is
applaudable..
TMC Prai Parsonage Dedication
Greetings in the sweet name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,
TMC Prai graciously prospered by the hand of God to purchase this parsonage to be used
to the glory of His name, we stood in His Holy Presence and dedicated this building to Him. TMC
Prai parsonage was dedicated on the 25 th May 2013 at 6.00pm by our TAC President REV. C.
Jayaraj. Blessed be the Lord God who does wondrous things; and blessed be His glorious name
forever and let the whole earth be filled with his glory. In grateful appreciation for the institution
of the home; for the provision of this residence; and the fellowship to be shared here, we have
dedicated this building to the Lord our God.
Our guests of honour were REV. C. Jayaraj (TAC President), MR. Michael Raja (TAC Secretary),
MR. Sham Kumar (Northern District Lay Leader) and REV. Rueben Rajandurai (TMC Kepala Batas
Pastor). It was a great blessing to have them with us on this special occasion. About 120 people
attended for this dedication service including church members, friends and relatives. The
dedication service started with a prayer led by REV. Rueben followed by the praise and worship
session led by Brother Regu and Sister Aswini. We were blessed with the presence of the Lord
being upon us.
Then, followed by special thanksgiving prayers by our Lay Leader Mr. Jacob Moses and our
Associate Lay Leader Mr. David Danabal as we thank God for blessing us with an amazing
parsonage and let His name be glorified.
Our TAC President shared God’s message with us and led us with the prayer of dedication for
the parsonage. His message was based on 1 Chronicles 17:16-27 “David’s Prayer”. With the title
of “His Special Plan” as this parsonage has been a blessing that came from above and specially
planned. It made us realized that everything happens at God’s timing, “Everything that happens
in this world happens at the time God chooses”, (Ecclesiastes 3:1). God has blessed us
tremendously. President closed this blessed occasion with prayer. It made us thank God our
Saviour in all circumstances and He keeps His promises upon us.
Besides, Bro. Regu thanked everyone for their support and prayers toward purchasing of this
parsonage. All glory and honour be unto God alone. May all praises be unto Him. Finally, we all
had a wonderful dinner and fellowship. It was a moment to be treasured and the whole event
was a memorable one with God’s presence being with us throughout the service. May God bless
all those who participated and supported this special event to be successful.
In His Service,
Rev. Samuel Periathamby
