January 2018
Dear Mr Broad
To the players, organisers and supporters of Cornwall Schools Cricket.
I am delighted that the Cornwall Schools’ Cricket Association has decided to embark on
yet another tour to Barbados and wish you all a memorable visit.
As you are aware, our countries share a long and much valued history and heritage
including cricket, which is far more than a game. Cricket crosses boundaries and breaks
barriers and, in so doing, unites players, spectators and countries both on an off the field.
As Barbados has been globally competitive in cricket for many a generation, I expect the
fixtures willbe both competitive and enjoyable. I encourage you to follow theexample of
the Barbados and England legends and be good ambassadors for your game, team and
country.
I also encourage you to enjoy all that Barbados has to offer; sample things Bajan including
our beautiful beaches, crystal waters, breathtaking landscapes, scrumptious food and the
warmth and hospitality of our people.
Have a great time!
with best wishes,
C.S.C.A.
A Brief History
The Association was formed in 1955 and played its first inter-county match, against the old enemy Devon,
in July 1956. For the next 20 years a regular programme of four matches for an Under Fifteen side was
arranged against local counties. In 1978, in response to the greater interest in youth cricket, the Association
branched out and selected two additional teams at Under Thirteen and Under Eleven. Over the years the
programme has continued to grow and since 1990 the Association has organised teams in all age groups
for boys from Under Ten through to Under Seventeen. At the start of the new millennium, the Association
launched a Girls cricket initiative and currently there are teams for girls at Under 13, Under 15 and Under
17. In 2016 over one hundred and fifty representative matches will be played with “B” team matches at
several age groups. The Winter Coaching Programme, organised in conjunction with the Cornwall
Association of Cricket Coaches, provides essential training for all squads throughout the year and almost
all County matches are played on top Club grounds, with official umpires.
The Association also organises many knockout competitions for all schools both indoor and outdoor for
girls and boys, at both Primary and Secondary level within Cornwall and these provide cricket for over three
thousand pupils! Since 2016 these have been supported and sponsored by Rotary Clubs in Cornwall.
In 2012 Cornwall won the Minor Counties Championship for the first time in their 109 year history. The
team which defeated Buckinghamshire in the 4-day final, contained no fewer than 10 former CSCA players,
along with a professional from Pakistan! To add to this success 2015 brought another “first” with Cornwall
winning the Minor Counties knock-out Cup competition, once again with a team made up almost entirely
of CSCA “old boys”. Some CSCA “old boys” go on to even higher levels with Charlie Shreck and Liam Norwell
regularly playing First Class cricket. More recently Jake Libby has performed with great success for
Nottinghamshire and, if he can free of injuries, next summer should bring further success. Hopefully some
of these recent stars will emulate our own Jack Richards who played for CSCA in 1973 and who scored a
memorable century in the Test Match for England in Australia in 1987. Amongst former CSCA opponents
who have achieved eminence, are Sir Ian Botham, who scored a typically quick-fire 71 against us in 1970
and Marcus Trescothick who twice scored hundreds against CSCA! Cornwall teams at the Taunton Festivals
have “experienced” at first hand the remarkable talents of players such as Alistair Cook, Ian Bell, Matt Prior
and Graeme Swann as young players, and more recently our teams have played against Jos Buttler, Jonny
Bairstow, Haseeb Hameed, Ben Stokes and Joe Root, who are all currently involved in England teams.
In 1994 ESCA introduced an Under 15 County Championship and, remarkably, the Cornwall team made it
to the finals in 1994, 1995, 1997 and 2000 and only Yorkshire achieved similar distinction. In an attempt to
continue to sharpen the playing skills of our young players, the Association seeks to find top class opposition
every year. In 1994 we embarked on our series of highly successful international tours to South Africa with
our Under 13 team and in 2011 we started taking our Under 15 team to the Caribbean. In 2016, as another
“first” we arranged our first ever Girls Tour, to South Africa, which reflects the growing success of the Girls’
game in the Duchy!
In the coming season we will have fixtures against the best talent in the country, including games against
the youth teams of almost all of the First Class counties. Despite such demanding fixtures, our Under 17
team won the National ECB Royal London Insurance County Cup and two of our Girls teams were undefeated
in their ECB competitions, so clearly there is no shortage of talented players in Cornwall. We also have had
the pleasure of hosting visits from touring sides, especially our friends from Franklyn Stephenson Academy
and Trinidad and Tobago whom we will be delighted to meet and entertain in Cornwall.
February 2018
Dear Mr Broad
It is a great pleasure for me to contribute to this brochure for the 2018 tour of the
West Indies.
This is the eighth time the Under 15s have toured the West Indies and the
friendships and contacts established will be developed further and we can look
forward to a high standard and competitive cricket.
The Cornwall Schools’ Cricket Association gives great opportunities to young
cricketers and its work is one of the best examples I know of commitment and
dedication of all those involved in giving those young people a chance to excel at a
game they love and develop their overall education and experience of life.
I am sure those on tour will make full use of their opportunity and make the whole
event another great success. I wish everybody the best of luck for a winning and
enjoyable tour.
A message to the young Cornish cricketers from the England Assistant Cricket Coach
It is a great pleasure to offer some thoughts to the young cricketers of Cornwall
for their tour to the West Indies at Easter.
I’m sure that the Cornwall Under 15 team have a brilliant time. The West Indies is
a tough place to tour, the cricket is hard, but the off field activities and learning
will be fantastic. Some of my first memories were touring Barbados, Trinidad and
Guyana with Malcolm and the West Region Under 15 team.
For any young cricketer touring is a magnificent opportunity, it provides you with a
great learning opportunity, it tests you, it helps you to mature and be more accepting
of others in your team. I'm sure that the players will be looking forward with real
excitement to the trip, and it's important that they make the most of every aspect of
the trip.
I have been very lucky to have toured lots of different countries through cricket, it
has provided me with opportunities to explore and enjoy things I wouldn't normally
have seen. Sport is such a great thing to be involved with, it mirrors life in so many
ways, and the more experience you have the better.
It is an exciting time to be part of the national team set up, and we have developed a
lot over the past couple of years. At Test cricket we are still building our batting
depth, and need to learn quickly and improve. In ODI cricket we have made big
strides, and have introduced some very talented younger players from county cricket.
The key thing for any player coming into the national team, is to play the way they
play for their county, not to try and do anything differently, and it is up to us
involved in the back room setup to help these players settle and learn quickly.
I really hope the young cricketers representing Cornwall have a fantastic time, really
enjoy their tour, and make the most of this brilliant opportunity.
Best wishes
Paul Farbrace
I am very pleased to send good wishes to the Cornwall Under 15 team for their
tour to the West Indies at Easter 2018.
I have made several visits to the Caribbean and the first two were with the West
Region Under Fifteen team in 2002 and 2003. I remember that on the first tour
we lost heavily to Barbados, but did better in Guyana and Trinidad. On the second
tour, I took 4 wickets for 21 runs playing at the Test match ground in Guyana,
which was an amazing experience. We won by 9 wickets so it was a very
memorable victory.
Cricket is very much a way of life in the West Indies and I am sure you will have
a fantastic time. Enjoy every minute of the tour, both on and off the field, and
try to learn something about the culture and ways of life of the countries you
visit.
has been lucky enough to also be selected for
the West Indies Tour 2018. He has played both
batsman and bowler and more recently
migrated to wicket keeping.
Jensen is a true Leo star sign and has the heart
of a lion and plays with no fear, sometimes to
his detriment. He has a great sense of
humour and enjoys spending time with all his
team mates.
Outside of cricket he enjoys following his
ALEX LEAN
Alex is a right hand opening batsman and
occasional seam bowler and wicketkeeper. He
plays his cricket at Grampound Road, where he
joined as a 5 year old as part of the ball skills
programme. He enjoyed a strong club season
last year representing both the U15s and
3rd/2nd adult teams.
He attends Penair School and plays for the
Rugby, Football and Cricket teams. He is a keen
footballer and has a reputation as a hardtackling
defender, playing for both Truro City
Pythons and St Dennis.
Alex is very excited at the prospect of playing
in the West Indies and would like to thank all
his sponsors and family for their kind support
over the last few months.
HARRY MATTHEWS
Harry lives on the family farm near Probus, in
mid Cornwall. He attends Penair School, Truro;
He broke through into the 2nd XI where he has
had many important partnerships batting with
his dad along the way (Harry being the mature
calm one!) Harry finished the season being
second highest run scorer for the club and third
highest wicket taker a very respectable feat for
one of the youngest players.
Harry is grateful for the opportunity to represent
Cornwall in the West Indies and is looking
forward to the experience and a successful tour.
Adam lives in the small village of St Dominick,
dad and his chocolate labrador called Marley.
He has four brothers who are all sportsman.
He is a right arm medium fast bowler and right
for Cornwall since the age of 8. He plays for
Callington U15s and the 2nd XI. His best
bowling figures are 6-21 against Leicestershire
and his best batting performance was against
Devon.
Adam’s second interest is playing up front for
Callington U16s football team. Adam’s dad is a
former Cornwall County player and currently
plays for the County over 50s.
Adam would like to thank everyone that has
West Indies.
FREDDIE STEVENSON
Freddie is 14 years old and is already 6 ft 4 and
still growing. He is an opening left arm fast
bowler and a lower order batsman. He lives in
Bude and attends Shebbear College. Freddie
has been playing for Cornwall since joining the
seconds.
Freddie had a great 2017 when he got the
chance to go to Cape Town for 2 months to play
for Newlands Cricket High School, which was a
huge learning curve for him playing lots of
challenging cricket in different conditions that
he was not so used to. He said “it was a
wonderful experience that filled me full of
confidence for the new season”.
Freddie was also selected for this year’s
Emerging Player Programme where he has
worked really hard on his game getting ready
for the tour and the new season. He is now
under the watchful eye of Somerset County
Cricket Club and has a 12 month contract with
the Somerset Potential Player Programme.
ADAM THOMAS
Adam lives in St Austell and currently attends
Brannel School. Ever since he learnt to walk
Adam has had a cricket bat in his hand and, until
he began playing himself, could always be found
walking the boundary at Bugle Cricket Club,
watching his Dad and Grandad play. Adam is a big
hitting opening batsman, and since entering the
County fold five years ago has gone from strength
to strength.
He has now followed his Dad and has been
playing for St Blazey Cricket Club 2nd XI, coupled
with the occasional first team appearance. He
already has a couple of centuries to his name and
will be playing regularly next season for the 1st
XI.
When not playing cricket, Adam plays football for
Charlestown FC, and enjoys all other sports,
especially rugby. He is a keen supporter of Spurs
and Exeter Chiefs. His cricketing hero is Jos
Buttler (someone Adam models himself on). He
was fortunate enough to meet Jos in Cape Town
during the U13 South Africa tour in 2016.
Adam would like to say a huge thank you to
everyone who has supported him and made this
tour to the West Indies possible.
FREDDIE WARD
Freddie attends Launceston College and is International
Leader for Causley House. As a keen sportsperson he
plays rugby, cricket and swims for local clubs in North
Cornwall, as well as at a representative level.
He enjoys playing cricket for his school and club,
Werrington CC. Freddie plays within the under 15 age
group at Werrington and has developed his cricket
during the past two years playing adult cricket, firstly
with South Petherwin CC 2nd team and then with
Werrington CC 3rd and 4th teams. Freddie opens the
bowling for Werrington 4th team and last season won
the batting award. Freddie is also a committed and
enthusiastic fielder.
In the past, Freddie has captained Werrington under
13s to both league and cup titles and this year is captain
for the successful under 15 Cornish All Blacks rugby
team. This is his first call up for Cornwall and he is
looking forward to the cricketing season ahead.
Malcolm was born in Cornwall and graduated
with a degree in Biology and a teacher
qualification after four years at London University.
He was appointed to Treviglas Community
College and retired as Deputy Head in 2009 after
38 years of service, but continued to work as a
curriculum consultant until August 2017.
Malcolm became Secretary of Cornwall Schools’
Cricket Association in 1976. He served for over 20
years at the West Region’s representative on the
National Executive of the English Schools Cricket
Association and on a number of ECB advisory groups.
During this period Malcolm was Manager of the
England Under 14 team from 1990- 1999 and had
the great pleasure of working with many young
players who have gone on to play for their country.
These include players such as Andrew Flintoff, Alistair
Cook, Ian Bell, Matt Prior, Graeme Swann, Samit
Patel, Ravi Bopara, James Taylor and Tim Bresnan.
Malcolm was a founder member of Cornwall
Cricket Board and was elected Treasurer at its
outset. In recent years he led the project to build
the Cornwall Cricket Centre which was officially
opened in December 2009. For 35 years Malcolm
has organised inter county festivals in July and
August each summer. These are currently based
at King’s College with over 100 teams from all over
the world participating in competitive cricket.
For his mammoth contribution to cricket at county,
regional and national level, Malcolm was awarded
an MBE in the Millennium Honours list, which was
presented to him by the Queen at the investiture
at Buckingham Palace in February 2000.

Gavin moved to Cornwall 4 years ago. His
cricketing years were spent with Somerset County
Cricket Club where he played from under 11 onto
the Academy and 2nd team Cricket.
After trialling and playing at Sussex and Worcester,
Gavin ended up playing for two seasons in the
Northern League for Blackpool and Minor
Counties for Cumberland.
His fondest Cricketing memories would be during
his 4 seasons playing Grade Cricket in Perth,
Australia. During this time Gavin became a
qualified coach reaching ECB Level 3 status and
became part of the Somerset Youth System
working as a full time coach.
After a lifetime of cricket, he felt it was time to
change career so he progressed into financial
services where he spent 6 years working for firms
based in London. However with a young family
and many years spent on holiday in Cornwall it
was time for a change.
He currently has his own business specialising in
human performance where he consults for
Worcester County Cricket Club.
West Indies Tour
Nigel was born in Grampound Road, a small
village near Truro, and was educated at what is
now called The Roseland Community College.
He is married to Judith and they have two
grownup children, Lewis and Kimberley. Nigel
recently became an immensely proud Grandad
for the first time and is looking forward to
watching Isaac open the batting for Cornwall
Under 11s in 2027!
Although technically retired, he works a few
hours a week delivering groceries for Tesco. His
main time is spent walking his spaniel Rio every
day through the Cornish countryside.
He is currently Chairman of Cornwall Schools’
Cricket Association. Apart from cricket, which
he is still heavily involved with, he spends his
spare time either fishing on his boat or match
fishing on various lakes and ponds. To relax he
plays the electric guitar and, although he does
not see himself as the next Mark Knopfler or
Brian May, the exhibitionist in him likes to think
he could be the next Angus Young!
He has toured Trinidad and Barbados many
times and is looking forward to seeing and
meeting his friends from both islands. He is
looking forward to his 6.00am swim in the sea
every day followed by breakfast overlooking the
breathtaking scenery of the St Lawrence Gap
coastline.
The Powergen ground in Trinidad and the
Isolation Cavaliers ground in Barbados are two
of his favourite grounds in this part of the world
and he is always envious of our players fortunate
enough to play at these fantastic venues.
If he has the time he is looking forward to
listening to some live music at the Old Jamm Inn
as well as joining in with the Karaoke at the Car
Park Bar next door on the Gap.
