PETS REMINDERS
Westheimer Lakes Community has had many
loose dogs & cats lately. Please do your part
to keep your animals safe and contained on
your property.
Please Control Your Pets!
It is a deed restriction violation if your pets are
not confined to a fenced backyard or within
your home. They must not be allowed to bark
all night or cause a nuisance to your neighbors.
They must also be on a leash at all times when
not in a contained environment. It is also the
pet owner’s responsibility to keep ALL areas
of the community FREE from pet debris when
walking your pets. Please remember that cats
must also be confined.
If you happen to come across vicious dogs or
ANY loose dogs of this nature, please contact
Fort Bend County Animal Control at 281-342-
1512. If you are familiar with the property
address the pets belong to, please feel free to
submit that information to FSR - Maren Grimes
at maren.grimes@fsresidential.com - to pursue
the deed restriction violation. Notification and
ample time must be given to the owner to correct
the violation prior to any further pursuit by
the Association.
Remember that all pets should always wear a
collar with ID tag! Pet owners should also consider
pet microchips for identification in case
your pet loses their collar/ID tag.
If you witness any suspicious behavior around the community please
contact the local authorities immediately at the non-emergency number
281-341-4665.
LET US KEEP OUR NEIGHBORHOODS LITTER FREE!
Take responsibility for yourself and be a good neighbor! Keep our streets
and neighborhood trash and litter free! Make it a habit, be a good neighbor
and do your part!
If each person did their own part (around the outside of their home including
their little stretch of street in front of their house), what a better place this
would be to live!
A clean environment/neighborhood makes people feel good about themselves.
They will keep it clean. Some need to be reminded. Others need
to be continually reminded. It takes time to change habits. Keeping your
neighborhood clean is a habit that takes conscious effort.
GOLF BALLS
Hitting golf balls is meant for the golf course only. It can cause damage not
only to personal property but to people as well. Please respect your neighbors
and refrain from hitting golf balls inside the community.
COMMUNITY REMINDER
NO TRESPASSING ON RESIDENTS PRIVATE PROPERTY
There have been complaints about children crossing through residents’
private yards to get to the facilities. Please let children know that they
cannot cross private property. If this should occur more than once, we ask
homeowners’ to contact the proper authorities.
BASKETBALL GOALS
Basketball is a fun sport that many like to play. As a reminder, please make
sure that all basketball goals are kept in an upright position in your driveway.
Basketball goals should not be left in the street at anytime or left on the side
of your home when not in use. Leaving Basketball goals in the street can be
a nuisance to drivers in the community and a hazard should there be a need
for an emergency vehicle to gain access to your street. Please note this is also
a violation of deed restrictions and if you receive violation letters regarding
this matter you could be sent to the attorney and be liable for those charges.
UNWANTED SOLICITORS
NO SOLICITING signs are posted throughout the entrances of the community.
If this continues to be a growing issue at your residence and would like to
place a NO SOLICITING sign in your yard, you may certainly do so. Please
be sure that the sign is placed by your front door and place only (1) sign at
your home.
If you feel in danger and think the solicitor will be in the community long
enough to call the authorities, we suggest you call the local Police Department.
KEEP OUR LAKES CLEAN
Please help us keep our community beautiful by NOT THROWING trash and
debris around or into the lakes. In addition, there is NO SWIMMING, BOATING
OR FISHING in the LAKES.
CANYON GATE ATTENDANT SERVICES
Hours of operation are 24/7 Sunday thru Saturday. The gate attendant’s
office is located at the entrance to Canyon Gate at Westheimer Lakes on
Idlewood Crossing Dr.
CANYON GATE EZ TAG LANE ACCESS
Please be patient when approaching the EZ Tag barrier arm and obey the
signs. After stopping at the stop sign, proceed slowly and wait until the
barrier arm opens fully. Bumping or hitting the barrier arm causes costly
and unnecesary repairs to the Association.
If there is a car in front of you, please remain at the stop sign until the car
has gone through the arm and the arm is closed. The barrier arm closes after
each vehicle every time.
IMPORTANT TRASH INFORMATION
Remember: Unless it is trash pick up day, your trashcans (and any
bags of trash) must be hidden from public view. Please do not store
your trashcans in front of your garage or on the side of your home -
your neighbors don’t want to look out their windows and see your
garbage either. Please be respectful and only place trash out on
specific trash days.
KATY ISD APPROVES
INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDARS FOR NEXT TWO YEARS
As part of the Katy Independent School District, “Your District, Your
Voice” initiative, the community has provided its input for the upcoming
yearly instructional calendar. The Katy ISD Board of Trustees
has approved the following option for the 2018-2019 academic year:
Option #1
School Begins: Wednesday, August 15th
School Ends: Thursday, May 23rd
Instructional Calendar Days: 177
Full week off for Thanksgiving
“The District is required to have a minimum of 75,600 minutes
of instruction per school year,” says Bonnie Holland, associate
superintendent for administration, governance and legal affairs.
“With the options approved, Katy ISD has enough calendar minutes
to cover two bad weather days,” added Holland.
K-12 Insight, the external research firm conducting the survey,
found that, out of the 22,169 participants, 65% favored option
#1. The Board also approved an instructional calendar for 2019-
2020 school year. This calendar mirrors the preferred components
of the 2018-19 calendar.
IMPORTANT DATES
April 20th - Early Release Day (6-12) - 12:15 PM
RANDLE NAMES TO P-TECH ADVISORY COUNCIL
Texas House Speaker Joe Straus has appointed Lamar CISD Superintendent Dr. Thomas Randle
to the P-TECH Advisory Council. The representatives of education and industry who serve on the
Advisory Council will make recommendations to the Commissioner of Education for the Pathways
in Technology Early College High Schools (P-TECH) program.
Under the program, which the Legislature created last year, public school districts and open-enrollment
charter schools will be able to apply for the P-TECH designation. P-TECH high schools will
offer an open-enrollment program that gives students the opportunity to combine high school and
post-secondary courses, as well as internships, apprenticeships or other job training programs.
Within six years, students in a P-TECH school will be able to earn a high school diploma, an associate
degree or other certificate or industry certification. The students will also complete job training.
“P-TECH Early College High Schools will provide students with the education and hands-on training
they need to succeed in education and beyond,” Speaker Straus said. “This initiative will also help
strengthen the Texas workforce, making our state even more attractive to prospective employers. Our
appointees to the Advisory Council have a lot of expertise to share and I’m grateful that they have
stepped forward to serve.”
The Advisory Council will make recommendations to the Commissioner of Education on the establishment
and administration of the P-TECH program, as well as develop specific criteria for a
campus to receive the P-TECH designation.
The Advisory Council is composed of members appointed by the Governor, Lieutenant Governor
and Speaker of the House.
Nearly all children with
5p-Syndrome have poor muscle
tone when they are young.
Other characteristics may
include feeding difficulties,
delays in walking, hyperactivity,
scoliosis and significant developmental
delays. A small number of children are born
with serious organ defects and other life
threatening medical conditions, although
most individuals with 5p- can anticipate a
normal life expectancy. With early and consistent
educational intervention, as well as
physical and language therapy, children with
5p-Syndrome are capable of reaching their
fullest potential and can lead full and meaningful
lives. Children born with this very rare
genetic defect will most likely require ongoing
support for life, from a team of parents, therapists,
medical and educational professionals
to help the child achieve his or her maximum
potential.
KATY COMMUNITY ‘CHIP CLINIC’
May 5, 2018, 11 AM-2 PM
KCCC at Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming - Richmond
9711 S. Mason Rd, Richmond, Texas
Katy Community ‘Chip Clinic, a local non-profit, volunteer-run organization
is pleased to announce its spring schedule of upcoming events to serve the
needs of Katy-area residents. The organization offers $10 microchipping
for pets with FREE lifetime registration! What is a microchip? A microchip
is a rice-sized transponder that is injected between a pet’s shoulder blades
with a needle. When getting ‘chipped, most animals don’t notice any difference
from when receiving yearly vaccinations. A microchip does NOT
have a GPS locator on it, but as long as the account is kept up-to-date,
its number will be linked to the pet owner’s contact information. The
microchip account is easily accessible online and pet owners can update
as needed and even add pet’s photo and veterinarian info.
Pet owners do not need to live in the same town as these upcoming
events to take advantage of this service, but PLEASE NOTE: cash only and
MUST bring rabies certification paperwork (not just the collar tag) - for
volunteer and attendee safety. There is a limit of two pets per family,
unless pre-approved. Cats should be in a secure carrier and dogs should
be on a no-slip leash (please no retractable leashes).
For more information on these events or to see the upcoming calendar,
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging
helps eliminate a great many pests that die
from various causes while in the bag. When you
buy 'loose' mulch that is trucked to your home,
you are also buying ants, roaches, termites,
etc… Spend a little more on bagged material
and save lots of future pest problems. Keep
your mulch at least 4" - 6" below the top of your
homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will
aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow
for quick and accurate termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim
all shrubs/plants at least 12" - 18" back from
your home. Do your best to create a plant free
zone that is 18" - 24" wide around your home.
The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next
to the slab as long as you keep it 4" - 6" below
the top of the slab. The most conducive to
termite infestation are groundcover plantings,
growing high against your homes exterior or
(especially) ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually.
The spring spray eliminates overwintering
pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist
the pest onslaught of summer with residual
pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from
the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring
over the winter and puts your valuable
asset off to a healthy winter's dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide
treatment to stop brown patch in its
tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is
thin and weak in some areas, here are some
important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b)
fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get
a 1/2" rain or more - then do not water.)
• Water heavily (1" - 2") for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning -
NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the
turf grow deeper, stronger and more drought
resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!
IRS TAX DEADLINE
People have until Tuesday, April 17, 2018, to file their 2017 returns and pay any taxes
due. The filing tax deadline is later this year due to several factors. The usual April 15 th
deadline falls on Sunday this year, which would normally give taxpayers until at least the
following Monday. However, Emancipation Day, a Washington, D.C., holiday, is observed
on Monday, April 16 th , giving taxpayers nationwide an additional day to file. By law,
Washington holidays impact tax deadlines for everyone in the same way federal holidays
do. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, to file.
The IRS expects more than 70 percent of taxpayers to get tax refunds this year. Last year,
nearly 112 million refunds were issued, with an average refund of $2,895.
BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR
STUDENT’S LIFELINES
Become an essential part of a student’s life by
signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy Council!
The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County
holds tutor training every other month. After
12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers
are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes
to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize
and compile lesson plans, learn about
various tutoring techniques, understand the
purpose of the Literacy Council and much
more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any
foreign language, nor do they need formal
teaching experience. We offer many locations
for tutoring throughout the area, including
locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered
during the day and at night. If you are interested
in impacting someone’s life by being
their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council
at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.
Through Literacy!”
FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”
Animal control authorities are permitted to
enter your Property to patrol and remove
pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and
inoculated as required by law.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the
control of your dog. If your dog is one that
‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make
every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right
to their ‘peace and quiet.’
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative
that you keep your dog on a leash
at all times. While your dog is friendly to you
and your family, imagine the consequences
if it were to harm someone while it was
‘roaming free.’
Please respect other resident’s right to walk
the common area ground without fear of
attack from an unleashed dog.
Laws are written to ensure that owned
animals are confined to their property or
kept on a leash to free a community of
unrestrained and free-roaming animals.
Although most dog bites occur on the
property where the dog lives, unrestrained
or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial
threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained
animals are at increased risk of
being bitten by rabies infected wildlife.
Enforcement of restraint laws is essential
in enhancing the animal control program’s
efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our
community.
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals
is identification, should that animal become
lost. Licensing also:
• Ensures that rabies vaccination are
current.
• Allows for quick identification in case of
a bite incident.
• Provides revenue to offset the administration
costs of the animal control program.
VACCINATION
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for
licensing dogs and cats because they are
an important control measure for the public
health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting
pets, rabies vaccinations provide a
barrier between infected wild animals and
humans.
