Editor’s Note
Want to begin by saying
Thank You
The support and love that has been constant since the launch of our publication
has been so encouraging. We appreciate YOU!
So much has happened in the past few months that has tested the resolve of our
Caribbean neighbors, the storms wreaked havoc on many of our unspoiled tropical
paradises, but the strength and unity of our island sisters and brothers has shown
its true character once again.
We dedicate this Issue of YOU to the Caribbean. Sun Sea and Sand is our life and
blood, no one knows it better than us. What the fierce winds destroyed, the rain
and sun will renew, and what the storm surges washed away, the new tide will
cleanse. We are Caribbean Strong.
This Issue of YOU focuses on what makes us special. Our unique fashion, music and
culinary delights set us apart from the world. We showcase the Caribbean Spirit
and Laughter. Fearless styles and Pulsing Energy. We can’t forget our Carnivals. As
I write this note, Trinidad and Tobago is gearing up for the worlds greatest festival.
Luke
Ribeiro
“I just had the best doubles ever,” model , actor
and now businessman, Luke Ribeiro tells me as
he describes doubles, the ever popular chick
peas and bhara (bakes) delicacy of Trinidad and
Tobago. It’s the interlude to our discussion on
his amazing life journey which took him through
chapters of modelling, acting, movie producing
and now the bustling life of business.
“So your doubles experience, does it echo your
passion for food or your love for local living?” I ask
him as he smiles charismatically.
“I love authentic experiences. Even when I was into
modelling and was travelling the world through
it I never wanted to copycat other cultures. I
always wanted to portray my own. My Trinidad
and Tobago and Caribbean culture. Our food,
our drinks, our events, our lifestyle, our people and
our passion…,” the former awardee for Caribbean
Best Male Model for the 2008 Caribbean Fashion
Awards avows.
He is the epitome of the Caribbean man. Dressed
in a simple black shirt and jeans, his aura is cool
and casual yet trendy. He is comfortable within
his skin; his mixed-race Trinidadian features
accentuating his cosmopolitan view of everything
from fashion, to food to fine wine.
Our chat turns gear towards his most re
entrepreneurial feat- a mobile applica
Ambro. Ambro is a very stylish, innovati
drink/event mobile application that ser
effective revenue generator and prom
for local restaurants, gourmet sites, coc
venues, brands and event promoter pa
But there is something in it for everyone
subscribers, it awards free drink, food, d
promotional items, fully featured event
platform as well as exclusive lifestyle co
a nutshell, it offers the indigenous Trinid
Tobago experience to locals and intern
a convenient and user friendly way. Ve
do the same within the Caribbean Reg
and South America.
“Ambro is my start up biz. Now that it ha
launched in Trinidad and Tobago, in th
few months it will be launched in the re
Caribbean, Central and South America
mirrors my love for my local and Carib
aesthetics, be it food or other aspects
rich existence. There is also more…. A
percentage of each subscription goes
charities,” Ribeiro exudes.
It seems unimaginable that the business saavy
model who did stints for brands such as Samsung,
Motorola and network television "Logo TV”,
would fall in love with the bartending/restaurant
scene which inspired a whole new realm of
business.
“I moved to New York in 2015 to continue
modeling and acting. While working as a
bartender in New York I learned a lot about the
food and the beverage business. I was in awe by
the vast knowledge which exists when it comes to
wines. Then the idea of Ambro was born. That’s the
thing about life, you always have to be your best
and learn as much as possible during all stages
of life. You never know… A situation you are in
now could help you in future. I started bartending
simply for extra income, I never would have
guessed that it would lead me to Ambro which
will serve as a platform for many bigger things to
come!” declares the Line Film Production specialist
who will guest star in his first SAG Feature film
entitled “One Bedroom” to be released in 2018..
To conclude our quick chat, Ribeiro flashes his
signature guy-next- door smile one last time and
enlightens me on the best wine he ever sampled.
“A French Pinot Noir,” he says as I leave him and
dream about wine and doubles!
Liselore Frowijn
Liselore Frowijn studied a BA in Fashion Design
at the ArtEZ Institute of Arts in Arnhem, the
Netherlands, where she graduated with honours
in 2013. Her final collection “Afternoon of a
Replicant”, was met with acclaim.
This first collection was based on the juxtaposition
between sportswear and luxury, and drew
inspiration from Henri Matisse’s late cut-outs. By
using cutting and pasting techniques, Frowijn
created a modern suit for the contemporary
woman, enlisting the same bold palette that
Matisse used, but spreading it across innovative
sportswear fabrics. Alongside these suits she
designed a range of modern pieces based on
military dress codes constructed in rich, artisanal
fabrics with self-designed, hand-painted or
embroidered prints. The dominant silhouette
was voluminous and layered, while plays on
fabric transparency created an interplay
between background and foreground. A fresh,
contemporary breed of luxury was born.
This collection earned Frowijn the Frans
Molenaar Dutch Couture Award in 2013. She
was also awarded the Prix Chloé at the Hyères
International Festival de la Mode 2014, taking her
place as one of ten finalists.
As a designer, Frowijn feels the continuous drive
to capture and retransmit the energy she gets
from art, music, people, and different cultures.
For her, fashion is the best medium to weave all
these different threads together into one eclectic
outcome. Fashion is her playing field, and her
challenge is to discover the unexpected. Her
designs walk the fine line between high and
low culture, each new piece a living painting
carefully constructed to achieve the perfect
balance between aestheticism and imperfection.
Her designs are for women with a curious
heart; explorers at the core, ambitious and
independent. The concept of her second
collection, S/S 15’s “Fracture Space” was the
woman at one with herself. She moves elegantly
and dynamically, and lets no one interrupt her
energy. She instinctively courts luxury, knowing it
in its purest form. The core look of this collection
centred on tweed biking jackets and polo shirts
finished with sportswear piping. Frowijn combined
her self-developed and hand-painted fabrics with
outdoors materials, adding a touch of opulence
with rich Italian jacquards. Frowijn presented this
collection along with a new fragrance at SALON/
BIG BANG ’14 at the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam.
The collection campaign was shot by talented
photographer Olya Oleinic.
