YOU GET the feeling the
dispute between the port
workers and their bosses is going
to heat up.
Striking workers and union
officials met yesterday (see page
1) as they discussed tactics and
other matters.
Union organiser John Kerr
could clearly be heard saying:
“We’re not going to cock this up,
we’re going to win.”
The tactic of dropping leaflets
in the streets where the port
company’s directors live is an
interesting one.
Said Kerr: “We don’t go on
strike at the drop of a hat. We’ve
been pushed into it, this is the
first time in 14 years,” he said.
On the other side of the fence
the port company looks determined
not to meet the union’s
demands.
Its operations manager Paul
Monk said the Railway and
Maritime Transport Union is
asking for an “unfair” advantage
over the other major port union,
Maritime Union of New Zealand.
It won’t be like 1951 but the
pot is starting to boil.
