Plan approved for Rolleston
DESIGN: The location plan outlining where elements including
a movie cinema, retail outlets and the new library and
community centre will be as part of the Rolleston town centre
master plan.
PLANS TO bring Rolleston’s
town centre to life has taken a
major step forward.
The district council approved
the location plan for the new
Rolleston town centre to go
ahead at its public meeting last
week.
It means the design phase for
the project can now get under
way.
It comes after 10 years of
discussion and consultation with
the public – with the master
plan first adopted by the district
council in 2014.
The plan lays out where key
elements within the master plan
will be located within Moore, and
Tennyson Sts and Rolleston Drive.
It is made up of four components
– a new Rolleston Library
and Community Centre, the
Rolleston Town Square, transportation/service
linkages and
commercial/retail area.
The planned complex also includes
a movie theatre, retail and
food and beverage outlets.
The recommended plan sees
the library and community centre
located at a key corner of the
reserve and Tennyson St, with
direct pedestrian access to car
parking in Moore St.
Mayor Sam Broughton said to
see the work done to give Rolleston
a “beating heart” is a huge
accomplishment for the district
council.
He said the district council
wants to complete the master
plan over the next five years.
Ten options of how the town
centre could be laid out was
reduced down to three – with
option A selected by the district
council last week.
Project manager Joanne
Nikolaou said this is “definitely a
milestone.”
She said the preferred option
placing the library and community
centre at the top of the
Rolleston Reserve was the best
option as it interlinks the reserve
and community centre and
is a drawcard to bring people
through the site.
Parts of the plan had already
been completed – including
roading projects such as the Tennyson/Kidman
roundabout and
the development of Foster Park.
District councillor Mark Alexander
said the project is a hub for
the future for not only Rolleston
but Selwyn.
“I think this a good step on the
journey. So let’s just get on with
it and get it done,” he said.
THE FIRST step has been made
to upgrade one of Springfield’s
oldest buildings.
The St Peter’s Community
Church has been given a facelift,
with its roof re-painted
recently.
It comes after the committee
has been calling for the Springfield
community to support its
bid to re-paint the roof and undertake
repairs to the woodwork
on the exterior.
Work was able to get
under way after 73 Hire
picker at no cost for the entire
The committee’s chairman
Graeme Dawson said it was
pretty special and the money
saved was possibly the difference
between the project going ahead
and not going ahead.
“The timing was excellent . . .
we had to get it done before the
winter,” Mr Dawson said.
In a bid to get other repair
work under way, the church’s
congregation is now planning to
continue to run various fundraising
ventures to preserve the
building.
The church was originally
built in 1885.
