Winter is on its way. And as much as we would like the long, warm days to continue, it’s going to come to an end. Therefore, it’s a good time to check, and possibly update, the things you will need most in the dark. The lights – inside and out. When it comes to external lighting, the options are vast. Generally, that lone bulb burning over the porch is, or perhaps should be, a thing of the past. These days we live much more of our lives outside, even in the colder months, whether entertaining friends with the BBQ, soaking in the hot tub, or just relaxing on the deck with a beverage, enjoying the pleasant experience of your own landscape and garden. Not only that, but as the nights get longer, it also ensures your outdoor safety. To take full advantage of these and whatever else you do outside, you need adequate lighting. Landscape lighting, whether ambient (general illumination of outside areas), task (lighting to do specific things by, such as reading or cooking), or accent (adds drama to specific features such as sculptures or plants, or textures such as bricks or stones) literally turns the darkness into a visual and/or functional delight. Strip lighting, bollards and path lights, surface mounted and recessed lights strategically placed enhance outdoor living. Some are easily installed, others require the services of qualified electricians. Many companies are specialists in outdoor lighting design and installation. LEDs are taking over. They are more efficient and environmentally friendly, give off better light, and don’t need to be changed every few months. Their versatility is only just beginning to be appreciated. Replacing traditional incandescent lights with LEDs is relatively cheap. For trends in indoor lighting, one only needs to turn to the Internet to discover that the only restriction to what is possible is the imagination. Personal tastes vary widely but according to those in the know, the trends to watch out for in 2018 are in no particular order: • hand-made and geometric shaped lamp shades • pendant lighting • chandeliers. Retro is still definitely hot, as are industrial styles. Apparently, brushed, soft gold is the new black. Feature lamps are popular, often more to add interest to a room than to add light. Midcentury modern and art deco are returning to style. Vintage style light bulbs are also very popular, and their namesake would be delighted to hear they are now also available in LED. Lighting is the number one feature that will create and enhance the atmosphere in your home. Most is easily updated with décor and seasonal changes. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday March [Edition 21 datE] 2018 354 HOME PROFESSIONALS Winter proof your home Homeowners know there are always little things that need to be done around the house. With winter getting closer, however, now is the best time to address some of those little, and not so little things, that maintain the value of your home, make life more comfortable, and long term prove to be cost effective, helpful to the environment, and perhaps will even add value to your house. The benefits of a warm, dry house are well documented, so consideration of heating and insulation are always near the top of any maintenance and improvement check-list. There are a number of options to both heat your home, and to economise on and maintain the heat that is generated. From a few small things you can do, such as make and use door snakes to reduce drafts, and applying foam strips and v-seals to doors and windows, to installing more efficient and, in the long run, more economical heating systems such as heat-pumps and modern log or pellet fires. If these are already installed, now is the best time to have them checked and serviced to make sure they are working properly and efficiently. Make sure heat pump filters are changed. Check chimneys are clean and ready for the sustained use of fires. Check also that the exterior unit of the heat pump is clear of debris such as leaves, weeds and other obstructions. Insulation is an important factor in maintaining a warm dry home. It reduces dampness and mould and maintains generated heat more efficiently. In addition to insulating roof spaces and under wooden floors – generally fairly easily done in most houses – things such as thermal backed curtains and double-glazed windows dramatically improve the warmth and dryness inside a home. Garage doors can also be insulated. Outside there are several things to do as well. Checking down pipes, gutters and plumbing regularly, especially this time of year is a good idea. Gumleaf ’s Gutter Guard and similar products are effective in keeping gutters free of leaves and other debris. It’s also a good time to check for leaks and fix broken tiles and flashings. Other jobs you might want to consider outside are pruning back trees and shrubs that are blocking sunlight; clean decks and paths of moss and grime; get the lawn-mower serviced and find a dry sheltered space to park it.
