A lot of hard work was put into getting the bus trial off the ground, but as expected, getting people out of their cars is easier said than done. With fares as high as $9 for a one-way trip, it easy to understand why such a service was never going to last. Meanwhile, the district council has outlined its vision for what it wants to achieve for the next 10 years. The draft Long Term Plan 2018-2028 has been given the green light to go to public consultation – and will be open from April 4. From extending the Selwyn Aquatic Centre to introducing a district-wide rating for community centre, halls and reserves – some big changes for Selwyn are ahead. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday March 21 2018 3 News Traffic light plan could come early Council to monitor roundabout congestion • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding TRAFFIC LIGHTS could be installed earlier than planned to combat congestion at a roundabout in Lincoln. The district council is planning to place traffic lights at the Gerald St/Springs Rd/Ellesmere Junction Rd intersection in 2027/28 as part of its draft Long Term Plan 2018-2028. Malcolm Lyall But the district council’s transportation asset manager Andrew Mazey said it will consider advancing the upgrade earlier than expected if traffic delays become of significant concern. He said the it will be monitoring the performance of the intersection. It comes as traffic is often backed up to New World Lincoln and along Springs Rd at peak hours in the morning. “Council is very aware that this busy intersection needs to operate efficiently within realistic levels at peak morning and evening times to deal with the increasing traffic demands,” Mr Mazey said. The traffic demands are a result of Lincoln University and other developments in the area, including the Te Whāriki subdivision. The traffic signal installation is part of a series of roading upgrades in support of the Lincoln Town Centre master plan. Mr Mazey said the plan will progressively upgrade Gerald St from east to west over the next 14 years. It is estimated the upgrade will cost $1.92 million. Lincoln chief fire officer Jeremy Greenwood said at peak times the roundabout can be an issue. “But we take our time and get round the best we can considering the circumstances,” he said. Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall said there is a lot of congestion due to a lot of single occupant cars travelling to the university. “I do wish more people going to the university would use public transport but it doesn’t seem to happen,” he said. Mr Lyall said he would welcome a review of having the traffic lights installed earlier than 2027/28. She said she will be glad to see the district council do something – but “the sooner the better.” However, Lincoln Club president and Hammer Hardware owner Lynn Townsend said while he does not travel through the roundabout at busy times, the roundabout works well. “Anytime I go through there, there is never any problem at all,” he said. •HAVE YOUR SAY: Are you finding peak times at Ellesmere Junction Rd roundabout a problem at peak times? Road works will remain on Rolleston Drive, by Countdown, until the end of April. A temporary speed of 30km/h is currently in place. Sergeant Alex Pickover said police had received complaints about motorists driving through the work site at high speed. Drivers caught speeding will be issued with an infringement notice. CAR FIRE Firefighters were called to contain a car fire on Sunday. The incident happened at 10pm, Sunday, on Greenpark Rd. Chief fire officer Jeremy Greenwood said it was likely the car was stolen before it was set alight. HALL REBUILD TENDER Plans to rebuild the Lakeside Soldiers Memorial Hall have taken another step forward with the tender for the project going to the district council’s public excluded section of the meeting last week. District councillor Pat McEvedy said the information on the tender will be released in due course so the project can go ahead. Selwyn Times reported in July the district council approved to increase its original funding of $167,788 to $417,697.
