I love New Year’s resolutions. They’re the perfect opportunity to
begin again. For some, they’re meaningless, empty promises that
will never come to fruition. But for me, they’re an opportunity for a
much-needed restart – a chance to grow mentally and spiritually,
to recharge my body, and to energize my life. Many believe
immediate changes must be made in order to measure success. It’s
my belief that small steps in the right direction are a much better
– doable – approach. Checking small goals off my list teaches me
patience, courage, and allows me to absorb all the benefits of the
process.
When we began planning this January issue, we didn’t set out to
making sweeping changes. Instead, we made a conscious decision
to follow the guidelines we put forth in 2016. Soon, those same
themes and ideas sparked new ideas and led us in a direction we’re
sure our readers will appreciate and be inspired by.
As part of our ongoing effort to put forth the best material
possible, you, the reader, will recognize the glimmers of inspiration
we strive to sprinkle into every edition. You’ll also notice that the
basic tenets we brought forth in our 2016 editions hasn’t changed.
We fully intend to keep providing up-to-date information that will
not only inspire you but will continue to inform you and keep you
engaged.
During this coming year, we plan to keep providing innovative
thoughts and ideas. We resolve to continue to meet our goals as
we move forward. Our resolutions include making this magazine
one that all in Miami will continue to enjoy throughout the year and
beyond. Every word written is written with you in mind. That will
never change.
Thank you to our wonderful readers, our amazing team, and our
wonderful sponsors for being a part of a successful year, and
cheers for a healthy and prosperous 2017.
With love and gratitude,
HEALTHY SOUL
GETTING
FIT IN
2017
The start of a new year is the perfect
time for making some commitments
about fitness. Need to take off a few
pounds? Need to be more frugal in
spending and more zealous about saving?
Need to do some things to enhance your
business and family life? Want to end 2017
with more spiritual muscle?
Making a few changes in your life can really
make a big difference in your savings and
retirement. As 2016 draws to a close, for
example, most financial advisers are telling
their clients about a higher contribution
limit for 401(k)s that goes into effect for
2017. If you discipline your financial life to
add the extra $500 the law permits – that’s
$42 per month – it can help your retirement
prospects.
Then there are basic suggestions about
improving your health most of us think
about at the turn of a new year. If cigarettes
and alcohol are still part of your lifestyle,
save yourself the fiscal, health, and social
problems they cause by eliminating both.
The same goes with the excessive junk food
that tempts us all.
For your life as a leader in your business,
this is the time to review last year and to
focus for 2017. Does your company have
a mission? One that people can recall?
Articulate? Maybe this is the time to sharpen
your communication.
What about your family? Are you finding
yourself making too many apologies for
being absent from family events and
unavailable to the people you love most? Are
you feeling alienated from your children?
The start of a new year is a good time to
reset priorities with your family. And just
sitting down with them to say out loud what
you are doing – and to ask their help – may
help heal some wounds.
Then don’t forget your spiritual life in
framing a fitness plan. I once heard a lady
express admiration for a Bible teacher she
respected. "I'd give half my life to know the
Bible so well!" she gushed. "That's about
what it would take," a bystander replied. I'm
not sure she got the point. Do you?
We'd prefer instant Bible knowledge from
a pill or potion. Most of us would pay well
for self-control, peace of mind, or power
in prayer. But spiritual life is like physical
health or fiscal soundness in one critical
way: All the positive steps you take, even the
smallest ones, make a significant difference
over time.
The art of change begins with a plan. Even
the things only God can change in us depend
on our plan to be open to the work of his
Holy Spirit. Pounds, pennies, and prayers —
success with all of them begins with a plan.
MAY YOU
GOD'S
DAILY GRACE
IN 2017
AND HAVE
A HAPPY
NEW YEAR
HEALTHY KIDS
WHY YOU SHOULD
ENCOURAGE
YOUR KIDS TO
DREAM BIG
Every kid has a dream of what he wants to be when he grows up,
just like you did when you were a kid. Maybe you had parents
who encouraged you in that dream or maybe you had parents
who weren’t so thrilled by your dream and wanted you to do
something practical instead.
Whatever your experience was like as a child, you have a choice right
now to help your kids dream. This is what my podcast is all about this
week:
Help your kids dream big and dream right. It sounds like a daunting
task, but it doesn’t have to be. By doing these three things, you can
help raise a child who pursues his dreams and succeeds at them.
1. GET TO KNOW YOUR
CHILD VERY WELL.
Spend time with your child in
order to understand her better.
Watch for her strengths and
weaknesses. Listen to what she
talks about. Listen to what she
wants to be when she grows up.
Get to know her.
Get to know her as she tries out
different dreams and interests.
Encourage her to have as
many dreams as she wants.
Don’t pigeonhole your child by
putting her in gymnastics for six
hours a week at age four. What
if she wakes up at age 17 and
realizes she doesn’t actually like
gymnastics; she’s only doing it
because that’s the only thing she’s
ever done?
Allow her to try many different
things and get to know her as she
explores.
2.ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO
PURSUE GOODNESS.
Kids want to grow up knowing
they have a purpose. They want
to do something that matters.
Encourage your kids to not only
dream but to seek God’s will in
that dream. Encourage them in
a path that will help people, or
to channel their dreams in a way
that is for the greater good.
Don’t let them become too
self-absorbed in their own
dreams. Work on their character.
Encourage them to pursue what’s
good and right, and their dreams
will follow.
3. ENCOURAGE THEM TO
PURSUE DREAMS THAT USE
THEIR NATURAL GIFTS.
This is where you as a parent have
the mostwisdom and guidance
to offer. As you’re spending time
with your child and intentionally
getting to know him, you will
see his natural gifts rise to the
surface. Kids can’t
always recognize
these. For example, if you have
an eleven-year-old who wants to
be a professional athlete but has
no athletic talent, steer him in a
direction that is reasonable. Point
out what he’s really good at and
find ways for him to use that gift.
Also, and this is important,
don’t push your kids to pursue
your dreams or become good at
whatyou’ve always wanted to be
good at. Having a child isn’t your
opportunity to live vicariously
through them and achieve your
own goals. You might see that
your kid, who you’ve always to
be a doctor, actually excels at the
arts. Let her pursue the arts. Or
vice versa, if she’s leaning toward
science and hates her piano
lessons, let her lean into that gift.
Having a child isn’t your
opportunity to live vicariously
through them and achieve your
own goals.
I interviewed actor, producer and
author David A.R. White. You may
know him from the blockbuster
God’s Not Dead or as the cofounder
of PureFlix. David grew up
in a Mennonite family on a farm
in Kansas. You can imagine his
parents’ surprise when he called
them from college and announced
he was moving to Hollywood to
pursue acting. No on in his family
had ever done this. By the time he
was 18, he’d only been to a movie
theater once.
But instead of freaking out or
ordering him to come back to the
farm, David’s parents simply said,
“As long as you serve the Lord,
keep him first in whatever you do,
we support you.”
Parents, this is the perfect
example of supporting your
child’s dreams, even if they don’t
match your own, even if you don’t
get them.
If David’s parents had forced him
to stay on the farm and live the
life they were living, the world
would have missed out on all
the talent David has brought to
Hollywood. He writes about his
storied journey in his new book,
“Between Heaven & Hollywood.”
Be supportive of your kids. Get to
know them and encourage them
to pursue good, big dreams. Don’t
let the world miss out on all they
have to offer.
WHY YOU SHOULD ENCOURAGE
YOUR KIDS TO DREAM BIG
MARIJUANA

FITNESS & BEAUTY
Marijuana is a shredded, green-brown mix of dried
flowers, stems, and leaves from the plant Cannabis
sativa. A stronger form of marijuana, called hashish
(hash), looks like brown or black cakes or balls.
Marijuana is usually rolled and smoked like a
cigarette (joints or doobies), or put in hollowedout
cigars (blunts), pipes (bowls), or water pipes
(bongs). Some people mix it into food or brew it
as a tea.
SHORT-TERM EFFECTS
The main active chemical in marijuana is THC
(delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). When someone
smokes marijuana, THC goes from the lungs into the
bloodstream. From there, it ends up in the brain and
other organs.
THC connects with a receptor on nerve cells in the
brain. When these nerve cells are in the parts of the
brain that govern sensory perception and pleasure, it
causes the marijuana "high."
THC also connects with receptors on nerve cells in
other parts of the brain. When those parts of the
brain affect thinking, memory, coordination, and
concentration, it can cause unwanted side effects,
including:
• Difficulty thinking and problem solving
• Problems with memory and learning
• Loss of coordination
• Distorted perception
People also might notice other short-term side
effects of using marijuana, such as:
- An increase in appetite
- Feeling lightheaded or drowsy
- A decrease in inhibitions
LONG-TERM EFFECTS
Research has found that people who use marijuana over a long
period of time can have more lasting side effects. For example:
• Changes in the brain. Marijuana can affect the parts of
the brain that play a role in our ability to remember,
multitask, and pay attention.
• Fertility issues. Animal studies suggest that using a lot
of marijuana might be linked to decreased sperm count
in men and delayed ovulation in women. Women who
use marijuana when they are pregnant may be more
likely to have babies with developmental and behavioral
problems.
• Respiratory problems. People who smoke marijuana a lot
can develop problems with the respiratory system — like
more mucus, a chronic cough, and bronchitis.
• Immune system problems. Using marijuana a lot might
make it harder for the body to fight off infections.
• Emotional problems. People who use a lot of marijuana
are more likely to say they notice signs of depression or
anxiety. If someone has a condition like schizophrenia
or bipolar disorder, marijuana can sometimes make
symptoms worse.
MARIJUANA
These side effects
are temporary,
but they can make
it dangerous to
do things like
drive while under
the influence of
marijuana.
MEDICAL USE
OF MARIJUANA
The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) has
approved pills containing THC as
a way to help relieve pain, nausea,
muscle stiffness, or problems
with movement — particularly for
people with cancer or AIDS.
There's still a lot of discussion
about the medical use of
marijuana, though. So the THC
pill is only available in some
states and requires a doctor's
prescription.
At the moment, there's not
enough research to say for sure if
smoking marijuana is any more
helpful than taking THC as a pill.
Scientists are still studying this.
WHAT IF I WANT TO QUIT?
People who use marijuana for
a while can have withdrawal
symptoms when they try to give
it up. They may feel irritable,
anxious, or depressed; have
trouble sleeping; or not feel like
eating.
Marijuana withdrawal can be a
bit like caffeine withdrawal: It's
usually worst a day or two after
someone stops using marijuana.
After that, withdrawal symptoms
gradually decrease. They're
usually gone a week or two after
the person no longer uses the
drug.
If you or someone you know
wants to stop using marijuana but
has trouble quitting, it can help
to talk to a counselor. Studies
suggest that a combination of
individual counseling and group
therapy sessions is the best
approach for stopping marijuana
use.
OTHER PROBLEMS
Some states are changing their
laws to make it legal to have
small amounts of marijuana
in certain situations (like when
it's prescribed for medical use).
But many states still have laws
against using, growing, or selling
marijuana — and people caught
with it could face charges,
including jail time.
Here are a few ways marijuana use
could affect you:
• Criminal charges. Marijuana
laws can be confusing. For
example, a state might
allow people to have a small
amount of marijuana with a
doctor's prescription — but
the same state's laws make it
illegal to buy, sell, or grow it.
• Career problems. People
charged under marijuana
laws may end up with
criminal records that hurt
their plans for college or
finding a job.
• Drug testing. These days,
employers often test for
drug use as part of the hiring
process. Marijuana can show
up on a drug test for several
weeks after it was last used.
So people who use marijuana
may find they don't get a job
they want. Some companies
do routine drug tests on
employees, so people who
use marijuana can lose their
jobs.
One doctor’s vision is changing the
Everyone aspires to follow their dreams,
but for Jennifer Loh, MD, her dream brought
about bigger visions that have positively
impacted her patients’ lives. Growing up, she
witnessed her physician father’s dedication
to medicine. The idea of using science and
technology to help improve others’ lives
prompted her to want to pursue the same
endeavors.
After completing her Bachelors of Science in
Chemistry at Butler University, Jennifer went
on to earn a medical degree and complete
her residency in Ophthalmology at Indiana
University. Once her training was done, she
moved on to South Florida to practice and
eventually open her own clinic.
Her interest in
patients’ individual needs. For
Dr. Loh, the opportunity to
give patients the ability to see
well while driving and reading
without glasses is only one of
the most satisfying aspects of
her work. Recently, she was
fortunate enough to travel to
India and help perform lifealtering
surgeries there.
For her, some of the most
enjoyable parts of the job are
the countless opportunities
to learn from her peers and
to help teach others as others
have helped her. This allows
all involved to remain at the
forefront of all the amazing
and innovative technologies
and procedures in the field
of ophthalmology. Through
her work, she’s learned that
while patients have access
to corrective surgeries as
a norm, millions of people
living in remote areas in many
other countries do not have
access to these amenities.
She believes that by helping
to train others and to visiting
places outside of her current
home base, lives can be
changed one person at a
time, and hopefully, become
the new norm in these often
impoverished or underserved
areas of the globe.
Currently, Dr. Loh makes her
home in South Florida. Her
office is conveniently located
in the Coral Gables/South
Miami area in the heart of a
bustling shopping district.
The lovely people manning
this state of the art facility are
always eager to provide muchneeded
care for their patients.
Not only can she provide
routine eye care for adults
of all ages, but she can also
screen for sight-threatening
conditions, treat cataracts,
perform refractive surgeries,
and help maximize the benefit
of one of our greatest gifts in
life – sight.
“
For Dr. Loh, the
opportunity to
give patients
the ability to
see well while
driving and
reading without
glasses is only
one of the
most satisfying
aspects of her
work.
HEALTHY KIDS
HOW TO MOTIVATE
YOURSELF TO
WAKE UP
EARLIER
When you start waking up earlier,
it really sucks. There, I said it.
I
faced my dreaded early bird future a
couple years ago, knowing it was the
right way to go, but hating it and wishing
desperately that I could hold onto my
beloved night owl lifestyle.
The evenings were my prime time. Or so I
thought. At the end of a long day, curling up
on the couch with my laptop and a glass of
wine made my heart happy. I would always
tell myself I was going to be productive and
knock out a blog post or two, but then get
hazy and distracted and end up watching
three hours of Netflix. I’d start to doze off and
end up wandering to bed around midnight or
later.
SOUND FAMILIAR?
I reached a point where, like the lovely Kat
Lee says so often, I was waking up TO my kids
rather than FOR my kids. I woke up to them
bickering, asking for breakfast, in a hazy fog
from the late night before. Not my best self,
I often started the day cranky, sometimes
yelling - and the mom of the year award goes
to…anyone else.
I decided to suck it up and make some
changes. I had already discovered the beauty
of simplifying my home and how much freer
I felt as a mom during my daily routine, so I
wondered what I could change next.
I woke up at 5:00 the next morning. I forced
myself to just do it - stand up and make the
bed as quickly as possible, then run into
the kitchen - no chance of climbing back
under the cozy covers. I was half dead, but
with some coffee and a few quiet
moments, I got my laptop out and
started writing.
I was pretty productive, but the kids heard
me tapping the keyboard and kept wanting
to come out. Then they’d be loud, then they’d
ask me for breakfast despite the fact that it
was still dark out and they probably shouldn’t
even be awake yet. It was frustrating and
discouraging, but I could see the light. I saw
how the mornings could go and noticed that
I was for sure more alert and ready to be
productive early in the day, unlike nighttime
when I’m really just DONE and want to veg
out with my hubby and Netflix. Plus, I liked it,
to my surprise.
I decided to adjust and push through,
tweaking things to eliminate the problems.
A couple years later, I still wake up around
5AM. It’s not perfect, and some days I get
up slightly later and some days even a little
earlier, depending on lots of things, but I’ve
figured out how to make this work! And when
it does, waking up early is pretty amazing and
highly beneficial to motherhood.
I want to say before I dive into the deets...
there are seasons for this. There are seasons
to not give a crap - like when you’re pregnant
or sick or have a baby who still wakes up
randomly. There are people who truly do
better, more productive work in the evening.
This post isn’t meant to sway you. If you stay
up late and get sh*t done, go for it. It works
for you, great.
I saw how the
mornings could go
and noticed that I was
for sure more alert and
ready to be productive
early in the day
There are also seasons where
nighttime really does work better for
one reason or another. I’ve switched
back to being a night owl twice in
the last two years, very temporarily.
Once because I was creating my
course. It was very stressful and I
found that I didn’t sleep well until
I had poured a heavy amount of
work into it. The other time is right
now, in the past week, for a similar
reason. I’m working on writing my
book proposal and several other
large work projects, and when the
stress level is this high, for some
reason I change into this nighttime
productivity machine and just need
to pour into my work right before I
call it a day. It’s weird, but it works
better for me very rarely, so I roll
with it.
HEALTHY MIND
For the most part though,
I wake up early. It’s now
a part of my usual routine
and it’s increased my
productivity, happiness,
energy levels, and general
fulfillment in my life by a lot.
There are a lot of different reasons being
dedicated to waking early has you failing or
deciding you no longer give a crap. Let's hash
them out, shall we?
WHEN YOU WAKE EARLY, YOUR
01 KIDS HEAR YOU NO MATTER
HOW QUIET YOU ARE, AND COME OUT,
RUINING YOUR PLAN FOR THE MORNING.
Hear me, mama. YOU ARE THE PARENT! If
you need to wake up early and be alone
for a bit, set the rules and keep them.
When I saw this being an issue with my
kids, I made a new house rule that is
still in place to this day. The kids are not
allowed to come out of their room (they
have their own bathroom, otherwise that
would be the only exception) until their
alarm clock rings at 8 AM. This gives me
three solid hours of writing without them
coming out.
I set them up with what they need - this
isn’t a torture chamber. They have a
snack and water and are allowed to talk,
read, and play until eight. My oldest gets
the baby from his crib and helps busy
him. Sometimes I have to run in and
give him a fresh diaper, but the it’s right
back into the room for some quiet play
because that’s the house rule.
Allie Casazza is The Purposeful
you purge the clutter that's
As Annie Dillard said, "How we
spend our days is of course how
we spend our lives." Allie will
inspire you to spend yours the
way you want to. That means
intentionally setting up a home
and a life that fosters purposeful
living for what matters. The
Purposeful Housewife is a place to
find clarity in your role as a mom.
Learn more about Allie
@thepurposefulhousewife.
Kids, you can fuss all you want, but this
is a boundary I have for myself, so that I
can be a more productive, happy, loving
mama.
They don’t even try to break this rule now
because they know it’s set in stone.
YOU LIKE STAYING UP LATE THE
02 NIGHT BEFORE WAY TOO MUCH.
This is your call, girl. It’s just like I say
when talking about my decluttering
course…. Do you want to reap the
benefits of an uncluttered home or not? If
you want to stop cleaning up all the time
and be ready for company constantly, you
have to purge and do the work.
SAME GOES HERE.
If you want the energy and productivity
and good feelings that come from waking
early and taking on the day, you have to
make the sacrifice of time. I think so often
we want a magic wand in life. If somehow
we could stop loving the quiet of the
evening and still wake up early magically
productive, that would be great! Yes, it
would be great. But you’re on Earth in
cold hard reality, and it’s your call how
your life goes down. So pick one. That’s
the hard truth we need to face if we’re
ready to stop letting life happen to us and
start telling it how to go.
Waking early has massive return on
investment, but you can’t get the return
without the investment, yo.
THE EVENING IS THE ONLY TIME
03YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND GET TO
SPEND TOGETHER.
That’s true for probably almost all of us.
Have at it! Watch a movie, eat dinner
together, snuggle up, get freaky…
whatever your thang is, do it and enjoy
the time together! Getting up early
doesn’t have to mean doing nothing at
night and going to bed when your kids do.
If you’re so tired that that’s when you
want to go to bed, it’ll get better as your
body and sleep schedule adjust, and you
might want to look at why you’re not
sleeping heavy enough to feel rested, not
what time you’re going to bed.
Brian and I LOVE our evenings together!
We watch TV, we talk and laugh, it’s the
best time of the day! Then around 10:30
or so, we head to bed fulfilled from the
day and feeling connected from spending
time together, and I can wake up early
again.
Try not to make this seem like such a
negative thing. It’s really not! Brian and I
also put our kids to bed pretty early. Bella
goes to bed around 8:30, and the boys
go to bed around 7:30. That helps them
get good rest and it helps us have some
time alone. Again, boundaries and rules,
mama. You’re the parents!
YOU CAN PUSH THROUGH AND
04 WAKE UP EARLY, AND YOU DO
FEEL MORE PRODUCTIVE WHEN YOU
DO IT, BUT GETTING THROUGH THE DAY
WITHOUT CRASHING IS THE PROBLEM.
Human adults need 6-8 hours of sleep a
night. Are you getting that? If not, go to
bed earlier or wake up later. Your call!
If so, there’s another reason you are so
fatigued, and you should look into it.
You’re probably lacking a nutrient or
something your body really needs. When
I started taking B6/B12 shots, I was no
longer dragging around 3:00 every day.
IT’S DARK AND COLD OUT, AND SO
05 HARD TO ACTUALLY GET OUT OF
BED WHEN IT FEELS LIKE I’LL FREEZE TO
DEATH AND BE UNABLE TO GET GOING.
There are going to be lots of hurdles
to making this change (or any positive
change), so it’s up to you to decide how
bad you want the benefits.
Nothing good and different
and better comes easy.
You can set yourself up for success, but
you’ve also got to know it isn’t going to be
perfect and easy all the time.
Keep a pair of super warm, cozy socks on
your nightstand that you can quickly put
on right when you wake up. Write a list of
the benefits to waking up early and put
it where you’ll see it when you open your
eyes. Move your alarm clock so it’s not
right by your bed and you have to get up
to turn it off.
Set rules with yourself and be a
disciplined person - that’s not something
you either are or aren’t, it’s something
you can choose and work hard to
become.
HEALTHY BODY
CONGESTIVE
HEART FAILURE
Once known as the silent killer,
Congestive Heart Failure no
longer has to be a death sentence.
For years, medical practitioners have
used the term congestive heart failure
to describe a disease process that, in its
simplest form, means congestive heart
inefficiency, and not an overall failure for
most. Once believed to be a verifiable
death sentence for patients, medical
science has matured, studied this health
issue, and through trial and error has
discovered that many forms of this heart
inefficiency don’t automatically equate
to a patient’s demise. On the contrary,
there are variations in this disease’s
process of infliction. Those living with
mild to moderate congestive heart failure
often times live full and normal lives with
the help of medication and treatments.
As is the case with many diseases in
the world, there are countless myths
and false claims attached to this one as
well. To date, what we in the medical
profession can state as an absolute fact is
the following:
p p • CHF is a condition meaning that
the heart’s pump function doesn’t
operate adequately to meet the
body’s basic needs.
p p • There is no one way to develop
this condition. Oftentimes it can
be brought on by other ailments or
disease processes.
p p • In general, the overall symptoms
of CHF vary from person to person,
but can include a diminished
exercise capacity, edema (swelling
in extremities, typically the lower
extremities).
p p • CHF is a progressive disease that
can worsen over time.
p p • Fatigue is a common occurrence.
p p • Shortness of breath is common.
Conditions such as valvular heart disease
or coronary artery disease can cause
weakness in the heart and can lead
to congestive heart failure. When this
weakness occurs, the heart can’t pump
blood through the body at a normal
(regular) rate or speed. This inability to
function properly causes pressure to
build up in the heart and its valves, and
that pressure reduces the flow of oxygenrich
blood throughout the body. When
this happens, the fluid becomes stagnant
and builds up in other organs, such as
the lungs. As less blood is pumped out of
the heart muscle, the blood that returns
doesn’t go back through the appropriate
channels adequately, which leads to
more fluid retention. This ends up putting
more extreme pressure on the heart and
other organs, and in turn, making this
whole vicious cycle even worse.
Patients, long before they are diagnosed
with congestive heart failure, must be
proactive when it comes to their health.
Learning how to identify the signs and
symptoms of diseases’ processes, such
as those of this disease will help their
medical team better treat them should
the time come. Relaying all information
to your doctor or healthcare provider will
help them recognize when something is
amiss, and eventually, help them build
a solid treatment plan for you. In most
cases, the treatment of congestive heart
failure will include lifestyle modifications
aimed at circumventing problems or
reversing detrimental factors. Medication
is often prescribed for the same. In severe
(advanced) cases, a heart transplant or
mechanical therapies may also become
necessary.
Congestive Heart Failure functional
capabilities for patients can be
classified in the following ways:
»»
Class I – Patients with no physical
mobility issues
»»
Class II – Patients with minor
physical mobility issues
»»
Class III – Patients with marked
limitations (unable to complete
ordinary tasks) without
modifications
»»
Class IV – Patients who cannot
complete tasks without extreme
discomfort
Understanding that this silent killer often
accompanies other disease processes
will help you recognize the signs and
symptoms before they become lifealtering
for you.
Also, keep in mind that serious risks
increase with age and other related
health conditions. Fully assess anything
that seems off with your body. Discuss it
with your healthcare team and adhere to
any recommendations they have for you.
If you are diagnosed, understand that
there are treatments that can help you
live normally, and possibly, reverse some
of the damage that’s already been done.
HEALTHY BODY
As with any disease process in
the body, one must learn the
signs and symptoms and be
proactive in their care. Initially,
it may be difficult to notice
specific signs or symptoms of
Hashimoto’s disease. You might
experience some minor swelling
in the front of your throat, but
might not immediately believe
it’s anything to worry about. But,
over time, the disease progresses
and can lead to chronic thyroid
damage that will forever
impact your thyroid hormone
levels causing them to drop
dramatically.
HASHIMOTO’S THYROIDITIS
A doctor’s perspective on a life-altering diagnosis.
Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disease in which
the body’s immune system attacks its organs and
cells. This disease has many names including chronic
lymphocytic thyroiditis or autoimmune thyroiditis.
Under normal conditions,
the body’s immune systems
would protect our bodies
from infections. It does this
by having the ability to detect
and accurately identify viruses,
bacteria, and anything that
might be at all harmful to the
body as foreign substances.
Conversely, in Hashimoto’s
disease, the body’s immune
system attacks the thyroid gland.
This attack causes inflammation
and interferes with its ability
to produce thyroid hormones.
That results in vast numbers of
white blood cells (lymphocytes)
to accumulate in the thyroid.
Those lymphocytes are what
triggers antibodies to start the
autoimmune process. As a result
of this triggered attack on the
thyroid gland, loss of thyroid
function (hypothyroidism) can
occur.
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is
the most common cause of
hypothyroidism in iodinesufficient
areas of the world.
This disorder comes about when
the thyroid doesn’t produce
enough thyroid hormone to
meet the body’s needs. These
hormones are what regulate how
our bodies store and use energy
and can have a dramatic effect
on every major organ in our
bodies. If we do not have enough
of this thyroid hormone, the
body’s functions will slow down;
thus, wreaking havoc on our
bodies as a whole.
Autoimmune diseases don’t have
one known cause. The cause of
Hashimoto’s disease is thought
to be a combination of genetic
susceptibility and environmental
factors. Evidence for genetic
susceptibility to Hashimoto’s
thyroiditis includes that the
disease cluster in families, the
concordance rate in twins is 30-
60%, the sibling recurrence risk
is greater than 20%, and occurs
with increased frequency in
patients with Down’s syndrome.
Possible environmental
precipitating factors include
infection, stress, sex steroids,
pregnancy, iodine intake, and
radiation exposure.
The usual course of
Hashimoto’s disease is
a gradual loss of thyroid
function. It can be diagnosed
with a blood test by
measuring TSH (thyroid
stimulating hormone),
free T4, total T4, total T3
and thyroid antibodies
such as TPO (thyroid
peroxidase) antibodies, and
thyroglobulin antibodies.
The classic pattern of the
thyroid function tests seen
in Hashimoto’s disease is
an elevation of TSH and
decreased in the levels of free
T4, total T4 and total T3.
SOME SIGNS OR SYMPTOMS TO
BE AWARE OF INCLUDE:

Fatigue

Pale or extremely dry skin

Puffiness around the face

Increased sensitivity to cold

Brittle nails

Unexplained weight gain

Hair loss

Muscle aches, tenderness
and stiffness

Constipation

Memory lapses

Enlargement of the tongue

Depression
Individually, these signs and
symptoms could be attributed
to any number of ailments, but
collectively, they should be
noted as a cause for concern. Any
four of them together could be
an indication that you may have
an underlying issue that needs to
Treatment of Hashimoto’s
observation and medications
like synthetic hormones such
as Synthroid and Levoxyl to
replace the thyroid hormone that
your body is deficient in. It may
involve monitoring hormone
levels regularly and using a
combination of hormones.
In some cases, alternative
medicines are used to promote
proper functioning of the thyroid
STRESS THERAPY
5 SIMPLE TRICKS TO STICK
TO YOUR WEIGHT LOSS
GOAL

FITNESS & BEAUTY
ANTI AGING NATURALLY
We’ve all been there: looking at
the mirror wondering "What
happened?" or "When did I get
that?" Yet as we go through life, we see
dozens of examples of people whom never
seem to age. How is that possible?
Many of us probably assume that they’ve
had some work done. While that might
work for them, going to that extreme can
be costly and often doesn’t garner the
desired results. So, what’s the average
person to do?
You’ll be surprised to learn that the
secret to flawless aging naturally
isn’t such a secret at all. People
have been doing it for ages. You
start by doing what you should
be doing – taking care of yourself
inside and out.
Is your lifestyle conducive to
living a healthy life? If not, now
might be the time to change
your mindset and begin to make
positive changes that will have
long-lasting implications. But first,
your body and mind might need a
reset. Every day we’re inundated
with a multitude of tasks, chores,
stressors, and more. That’s not
to mention how many harmful
pollutants our bodies come in
contact with on a daily basis.
Toxins in the environment are
near impossible to avoid in most
instances. All that exposure leaves
us vulnerable to the harmful effects
and wreak havoc not only on our
immune systems but also on our
bodies inside and out.
Our bodies are designed to
absorb substances. In some cases,
those substances don’t pose a
remarkable risk, but in others,
the substances can be extremely
detrimental to our overall wellbeing.
How does one rid their bodies of these harmful toxins
without resorting to costly treatments and procedures?
DETOX DIETS ARE ONE WAY WE
CAN SAFELY RID OUR BODIES
OF DAMAGING POLLUTANTS
AND TOXINS.
Cleansing our bodies of harmful
substances does wonders for
our bodies starting from the
inside out. Once you’ve cleared
trapped toxins from organs like
your liver, kidney, or colon, you’ll
start noticing improvements
with your skin, hair, nails, mental
clarity and more. Soon, you’ll
notice that you’re not only more
alert but that you’re also sleeping
better.
EATING RIGHT.
Yes, it’s that simple. You’ve heard
it all before – eat your fruits and
vegetables. While for many of us,
those were just orders parents
were required to give their
children, but now, most of us
understand the health benefits
associated with eating heart
healthy foods. Many fruits and
vegetables have been proven
to have anti-cancer benefits.
While others help ease digestion
and help you meet your daily
nutritional needs without adding
unnecessary fats or calories.
WEANING YOURSELF
OFF FAT, GREASY,
CARBOHYDRATE-RICH
FOODS.
Eliminating these foods
from your diet will help
with overall digestion.
Once you’ve cleansed your
stomach, you’ll begin to
notice changes in your skin.
The difference can be night
and day for many.
These
simple fasts
can have long-lasting
benefits. Going cold turkey
isn’t the key here. Making
small incremental changes and
continued follow-through will
soon make a world of difference
in your life and will help clear
any brain fog, sluggishness,
or fatigue you may be
suffering from.
FITNESS & BEAUTY
We live in a world that’s always touting the
‘Next Best Thing.' A brand-new fitness
craze here; A miracle weight loss cure there.
It’s easy to fall prey to celebrity endorsements,
million dollar ads, and miraculous before and
after transformations. Those campaigns have
their place, and in some cases, might show
instant results, but the problem with the "instant"
is that results can vanish almost as quickly as
they became a possibility.
Diets take hard work and
dedication. The concept
is easy enough to say, but
executing is a whole other
story. While it’s true that
many succeed, it’s also true
that many more struggle
to stick to a weight loss
plan. Temptation lurks
everywhere. Television
commercials, billboard
ads, internet marketing
campaigns and word of
mouth works great for
advertisers, but for dieters,
they can wreak havoc
on your motivation. But
despite all the obstacles we
face, weight loss experts,
medical practitioners, and
those who’ve successfully
lost weight the right way
– through hard work and
dedication – know that there
are five simple tricks which
help people stick to their
weight loss goals.
1
Exercise. Of course, you’ll
want to consult a physician
before starting an exercise
routine, but after you’ve
gotten the all-clear, make
exercise – any exercise – a
part of your daily routine.
Be realistic. If you’ve never
run a day in your life, you’re
not going to complete a
marathon tomorrow, but you
may be able to walk a block.
Small steps in the right
direction are better than
making no effort at all.
2
Take inventory. Look at
your lifestyle and your
environment. Are they
conducive to meeting your
goals? Are your cabinets
filled with unhealthy
options? Are you still using
your treadmill as a clothing
rack? Is your family on
board with the changes
you’re making? If not,
explain that what you’re
doing is for you and ask
for their support. Chances
are they’ll want to see you
succeed and might even be
inspired to join you.
3
Write down your goals. Be
specific. What is it you want
to accomplish? In what
time? Detail step-by-step
how you plan to get there.
Studies have shown that
people who write out their
goals are more likely to
succeed because they have
something for reference
when their spirits dwindle
or when life gets tough.
Give yourself mini-goals
along the way. You’ll love
checking those items off
as you make incremental
improvements daily.
5 SIMPLE
TRICKS
TO STICK TO YOUR
WEIGHT LOSS GOAL
4
Ditch the scale. Muscle
weighs more than
fat. Measure your
accomplishments by
assessing the way your
clothes fit. If you do all the
above, you’re sure to lose
inches along the way. Soon,
it will be time for a new
wardrobe.
5
Reward yourself for small
achievements. Small
tokens can be great
motivators. For example,
if you meet your first goal,
why not buy that book
you’ve been dying to read
or treat yourself to a new
blouse? Pat yourself on the
back for a job well done.
HEALTHY FOOD
DAVIDE CASTELLANO
South Miami’s Jewel – Freshhealthy Miami:
Serving healthy foods at an affordable price.
Like many people, Davide Castellano lived a stressful life. A bad diet, poor eating habits, and a less-thanideal
lifestyle led to the realization that in order to feel better, he had to do and be better. Understanding
his obstacles wasn’t the end all be all. He understood that in order to foster change; he had to do his
research and ensure that what he was doing would have a positive impact on him and others.
That newfound knowledge came
in the form of a long career as a
social educator. After fifteen years
of providing services for countless
children between the ages of twomonths-old
and twelve-years-old,
he noticed a distinct pattern. Those
that had better diets did better.
That sparked in him a desire to
want to ensure that healthy foods
were not only available to each and
every child but were affordable for
families.
Soon, he invited clients to join
his healthy food revolution. His
goal was to provide children with
healthy, organic food made by
professionals. The concept was
easy enough, but it required client
education. That education came in
the form of reaching out to parents
and inviting them to participate.
Soon, the invitation extended
to the community. Nutritionists
came on board, followed by fitness
professionals and beyond.
His simple idea transformed into
what is now Freshealthy Miami,
where delicious and nutritious
meals are served at affordable
prices. Davide Castellano, a selfproclaimed
workaholic, has not
only fostered change by focusing
on children’s eating habits and
diets, but also aims at expanding
his idea and opening other
installments of his revolutionary
kitchen in other locations, thus
spreading his life-changing ideas
across lands. Castellano doesn’t
come at this lightly. Born in Italy
and raised in Luxembourg, France,
he acquired European and Anglo-
Saxon values, disciplines, work
ethic, professionalism, and top-tier
organizational skills that were the
precepts to what would become a
revolutionary idea that could have
a positive impact on the lives of
countless children.
His lessons go beyond simply
teaching people how to eat
better. Freshealthy Miami also
shows parents how to prepare
healthy meals by holding cooking
demonstrations and showing
families how to work together in
the kitchen. By giving the child
an opportunity to partake in the
process, parents foster a love
for healthy eating. They’ll carry
those simple lessons with them
throughout their lives and will
someday teach their children to do
the same.
Through his unique restaurant, he
has the opportunity to teach and
educate the young and the old
and showcase healthy eating in
individual homes all throughout
the community. For Castellano, his
business means nothing if it cannot
have a positive impact on the
community at large.
It is his belief that people today
are addicted to sugar and
carbohydrates, and are hence
more likely to fall ill. He has made
it his mission to circumvent the
rising numbers of those suffering
from preventable illnesses, teach
them the difference between
bad carbohydrates and good
carbohydrates, and show them
how to live a more healthy life
by making better choices for
themselves and those they care
about.
Castellano states that his goal
is to encourage people to start
eating better one day at a time,
with fresh and healthy ingredients
cultivated locally. Families should
feel like they are in charge of their
kitchens. By eating healthy foods,
they are taking a stand against bad
choices and preventable ailments.
By choosing healthier options,
they are doing the absolute best
for themselves, their children, and
future generations.
Miami is only the beginning of what
Castellano wants to accomplish.
Soon, he hopes to expand his
business and change lives across
the globe, one healthy meal at a
time.
STRESS EATING:
Good Stress vs Bad Stress
Part2 - The Why
This is not about the food or the enjoyment of the food,
it’s about the chemicals induced by the food. It’s actually
something your brain is doing to protect you from stress – an
attempt to soothe the stress hormone – cortisol, when there’s a lot
of it being released for a dangerous length of time aka CHRONIC
STRESS. To be uber clear: your compulsions are not related to
food, they are tied to soothing or resetting something that is
harmful to your body. This is what motivates the act in the first
place. Insulin makes you crave fat. High cortisol makes you crave
dense calories to reduce anxiety and damper the stress response.
Whether or
not you suffer from
stress-eating or emotional
eating is dictated by your
particular coping abilities within
your environment. Your body
has discovered an effective way
of coping with a harmful and
chronic situation. That solution
unfortunately, is stress-eating. The
effect is relief – it’s a feeling that is
just like taking drugs. So you are
a drug addict in many ways, and
you must look at this situation
from a similar perspective. If you’re
struggling – I don’t blame you! This
soothing habit creates an extremely
powerful chemical dependence
in the brain and body – because it
effectively gives you relief from the
stress chemicals.
Think of stress like a giant fire drill
in the body. There are two key
players in your stress response.
One is called the HPA-axis. One is
called SAM, or sympathetic-adrenomedullary
system. For this to sound
more interesting, I’m going to call
HPA axis Happa. *I’m allowed to
say that – I’m half-Asian. I’ll call
the other – Sam. So there’s Happa
and Sam, two firemen armed with
hormones. Happa takes a bit longer
than Sam – but they both have the
same goal: help the body deal with
the crisis at hand.
Normally Happa gets a bunch of
hormones to release, the most
important of which is cortisol, and
when cortisol is released it gets
your motor running: it suppresses
your immune system and gives you
enough energy to deal with life.
Once enough is released, some of
the cortisol makes its way back to
the hose spigot and Happa turns
off the hose: the cortisol is shut
off. “Crisis averted! Shut that hose
off!” Because if the cortisol keeps
a’ flowin’ your organs start to
deteriorate and your emotions and
sleep cycle get out of whack. Not
to mention, you store fat, and have
increased insulin resistance, etc.
No Bueno. Sam is like the “bro” of
the two firemen. He’s all agro about
dealing with the stress fire, he gets
after it! Sam gives you a burst of
testosterone and adrenaline and
also stops your food digestion, to
help you fight and win this battle.
Together, Happa and Sam get you
capable of fighting off the threat
and confronting the challenging
situation. However, if you are in a
chronic state of intense stress, your
tissues cannot handle it. Sam and
Happa’s activation can wreak havoc
on your body, eventually even
degrading your gene code.
One very important difference in
the damage has to do with how
Happa and Sam receive that call:
is it a call from a town screaming
bloody murder? Or is it an adorable
kitten that won’t come down from
a tree? In other words, how big the
stress response depends on the
way you feel about the stress itself.
Certain responses to stress won’t
sound the same amount of alarm
to both Sam and Happa. There
are two significant key factors in
the kind of stress – it’s sometimes
referred to as “threat stress” vs.
“challenge stress.” Challenge Stress
meaning, you experience stress
as a challenge, but you are not
experiencing it as a threat to your
person – Threat Stress meaning, a
threat to self-image: something you
feel unable to handle that will hurt
you socially or that you perceive as
a personal failure.
The way they tested this fact was
done with lab rats – and they are
cute! And I really wish I didn’t
see this deck. I was Googling to
understand the definitions, and
well, it’s really upsetting. I will add
links to the end of this article if you
want to read them, too. Anyhoo
– the key factors that effect how
you react to the stress lie in these
factors: the predictability of the
stress (which is dictated by your
genetics, your past experiences)
and the environment you are
reacting to (its controllability: type
of stress, frequency, intensity and
duration). Both of these dictate
how you will COPE with stress. AKA
what that phone call sounds like
when it gets to Happa and Sam.
I’ll call this your
coping style. A
lot of the way we
react to stress
is just a habit:
regardless of
how major that
stressor is, you
could become
extremely
sensitive to it or
be overwhelmed
but totally
handling it. To
quote another
study I read, “…
the value and
meaning we
assign to the
stress stimuli,
determines
how ‘harmful’ a
stressor is…”
HEALTHY MIAMI / 33

HEALTHY FOOD
THREAT STRESS: Includes fear – a feeling
that we cannot cope with the stressor.
When the “threat stress” includes public
embarrassment or social failure it’s an even
bigger response, physiologically.
Challenge Stress: Includes a feeling that our
stressor is controllable – that we are capable
of dealing, and that it’s a demanding BUT not
fear-inducing situation.
In short, if you experience your stress as
threat, where you are fearful, or emotionally
distressed, you are more likely a stresseater
than if you experience your stress as
a challenge. Cortisol stimulates hunger and
feeding- adrenaline is part of the fight/flight
response which shuts down digestion. Threat
stress stimulates eating more than challenge
stress. Sam, the agro dude is activated by
challenge stress. Hence the reason most don’t
overeat from this kind of stress. Challenge
stress types eat less, on average.
SO WHAT PREDICTS THE WAY YOU
EXPERIENCE STRESS AKA YOUR
STRESS TYPE?
It’s probably a combination of factors. It
has a lot to do with your genetics, your life
experiences and how you cope based on
those factors. If you were shy as a kid and
you went through something super scary and
traumatic at unpredictable times, this would
exacerbate your stress sensitivity. Regardless
of how your stress type was set up, it doesn’t
mean you can’t LEARN better skills and grow
new abilities to handle stress, now. In my
experiences, everything is trainable, including
new reactions to old triggers. Which is what
we’re going to learn some more about in the
tools.
You might also be more effected by the
food stimuli of your environment – maybe
because you’re dieting or image-conscious,
and you are not inclined to self-sooth in
another fashion. You’re also biologically more
sensitive to the food soother – maybe you’re
more vulnerable to the opinions of others,
like you are especially delicate or fearful of
disappointing others. Or maybe you’re just
type-A and feel a heightened need to control
everything in your environment – even when
that’s just an illusion.
People who are stressed have a low-level
of something called NPY, that causes a high
level of anxiety. NPY is an anxiolytic peptide,
leading to decreased anxiety. There are low
levels of this in people with PTSD – or high
stress. And Glucocorticoids stimulate NPY
release, which decreases anxiety. You are
eating to lessen anxiety! (So part of your
solution is to attack the anxiety from other
angles.)
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME!?
It’s your brain’s self-protective mechanism
gone wrong. Your brain is trying to protect
from the harmful threat-stress response by
pushing you to eat foods that will release
opiods. The foods sustain opiod release. It’s
actually a highly effective coping behavior!
Your body is smart– only problem is, while it
solves the other stress hormone problem, the
brain grows dependent on it. It could easily be
something else – like cocaine, but once your
brain finds a way to regulate the danger, it
grows reliant on it.
“Opioids decrease activity of the HPA axis
on different levels in order to terminate and
attenuate the stress response, providing a
negative feedback control mechanism.”
Your body is empowering itself to stop the
damage of the stress-response. Fatty foods
release the same chemicals as cocaine in the
brain reward system (opioid, dopamine and
endocannabinoid) which creates a powerful
addiction loop. It also makes you dependent
on the reward center chemicals– your body’s
natural morphine, and you can literally go
through withdrawals from eating lots of fatty/
sugary foods to calm yourself. It’s no small
thing! This shit is potent!! Neurobiological
adaptations occur from repeated use of this
drug called “stress-eating,” aka you form new
muscle memory, so the more you use it, the
more you’ll increase the compulsiveness of
your overeating.
Cortisol/stress stimulates your appetite and
causes you to crave high-fats more often and
increase your food intake, while making your
body less able to process to the sugars, aka
insulin resistance, which is what happens in
diabetes. Because your body is in this mode
of saving sugar and needing sugar you are
getting hunger signals to your brain while
storing unused sugars as fat.
And this becomes an addiction – because it
alters your neural pathways. It gets stronger
with each practice – because of how it alters
your reward system. Because it’s a chemical
loop, a need for high-fat / high sugar foods
continues on after the stress has been
removed. There’s also research that suggests
stress inhibits your right prefrontal cortex
activity, which lessens your ability to think
and control your food intake.
What else predicts becoming a stress-eater?
Another MAJOR predictor of whether or not
you are going to be a stress-eater is whether
or not you already are a “control eater” or
restraint eater – meaning, if you’re always on
a diet. Restraining your food intake makes
you a ton more susceptible to stress-eating,
because in part, the withholding of calories
sets up the downfall. And for what it’s worth –
people who diet usually eat the same amount
of calories (and then-some) as those who
don’t, but in the form of a rollercoaster. Diets
are usually a longer loop of withholding then
eventually binging / breaking down: it’s like
your body’s way of leveling itself to normal,
again.
BUT WHY AM I EVEN MORE EMOTIONAL
WHEN I’M STRESSED?
Stress-eating also fucks with your emotions
because it’s tied to all sorts of levers in
your body, besides your immune system.
Because fatty and sugary foods mess with
your glucose, you might experience mood
swings that make you feel like a baby, crashes
of depression. Not to mention, messed up
periods and decreased sex drive from the
hormone fluctuations.
MOST IMPORTANTLY:
In order to help yourself out of this habit,
you’ve got to tackle the stress and the stresschemicals,
overall. Not just the symptom
– which is stress-eating. Tilt the scales in
your favor. Give yourself a leg up where you
actually have access to your highest thinking:
when you’re outside of that habit’s powerful
loop.
Once you can build up a rhythm and be
successful in this soothing, you will naturally
tend toward that thing: it’s not this hard
forever. It one day will be a faint memory! You
will not “be” this person when your chemicals
are balanced and you have another proven
method of soothing. This is when you actually
become addicted to the new, healthy habit.
It will be something you CRAVE completely
organically. Like your body will actually say
to you, “I want salad.” Or “I really need to go
running.” It’s not just that you’re different
than other people – this is just what comes
from creating chemical balance.
HEALTHY FOOD
NEW YEAR DETOX
Carrot and Beet Juice
As we partake in the
many celebrations of
December, we begin
to feel a bit worn down by all
the unhealthy excesses—food,
beverages, late nights, etc. Our
bodies simply can’t adapt to the
sudden drastic changes they’re
put through. What our bodies
are begging for is a fresh start,
a re-boot.
Just as caring for the body’s exterior has its
benefits, cleansing and detoxifying it from the
inside offers many health benefits as well, no
matter the time of year.
Taking care of your insides:
• Helps remove waste and toxic chemicals
from the colon and body cells;
• Improves digestion;
• Tunes up the intestinal system, which
gets sluggish without proper fiber and
water;
• Increases energy;
• Promotes well-being; and
• May increase nutrient absorption.
A good way to start is with one of my favorite
detox juice recipes, which has great cleansers
as ingredients. Cucumber and celery are high
in vitamins A and C and are natural diuretics.
Beets and parsley are high in iron and are
blood and liver cleansers. Carrots are high in
antioxidants and lemons aid in cleansing the
entire body..
INGREDIENTS
99
1 cucumber
99
1 beet
99
3 carrots
99
2 stalks of celery
99
1 handful of parsley
99
½ lemon
PREPARATION
If using an extractor, juice
all ingredients.
If using a blender, peel
and cut cucumber, beet
and carrots. Add celery
stalks, parsley and lemon
juice, and blend.
to go around town to find
HEALTHY PLACES TO EAT.
One of the biggest challenges we chefs and
restauranteurs face on a regular basis is
trying to figure out how to stay relevant
in a time and place so ruled by fashion and
trends. In this new, hyper-fast reality we're living
in, everything that we used to believe was right
has been flipped on its head. So how do you stay
atop what people want from your restaurant?
This time around, I went to downtown Miami
looking for some answers and landed on a
charming casual eatery called NUTREAT which
seems to have everything figured out. How did
they do it? Free soup tasting!
Located in the very core of downtown Miami, the
place is not just surrounded by the fast-paced
office workers looking for some good eats on
their lunch breaks, but tourist groups just trying
to refuel from their long walks around the area.
And this restaurant welcomes them with inviting
aromas of four fresh-made signature kinds of
soup that you can try. All day, every day.
With a modern aesthetic to match Miami’s, and
a conceptual menu that will not make you spend
too much time reading it, NUTREAT has become
one of my favorite spots to grab a bite (or a sip)
when I’m around the area.
After talking to the owners, I learned that they
have a very clear idea of what they want from
their restaurant: To keep true to their vision,
keep using locally grown and farm raised
ingredients and always to listen to their clients.
As I expected, most of the menu can be fully
customized to your preference to match your
likings, hunger level or sometimes just the time
you have to grab a quick bite. From original
wraps to custom sandwiches and from crisp
salads to their hearty soups, the menu is
designed to take you on a quick retreat of fresh
flavors and textures with each bite.
And just when I thought I had finished a great
experience, the owner tells me he is, in fact, a
tea master and presents me with a hand-picked
blend of amazing herbal teas that made my day.
So don’t forget to mention it when you stop by
because you don’t have to be a tea lover to enjoy
a good refreshing drink.
I am personally going to
spend quite a few afternoons
there when I’m in the area
so make sure you say hello if
you see me there…
