While many of us
take part in
celebrating
St Patrick's Day,
there are probably
few New Zealand's
who know much
about the
Patron Saint
of Ireland
ST PATRICK was born somewhere on
the west coast of Britain and when he
was 16 he was captured by raiding
Irish ships and taken to Ireland to be
sold as a slave. He was bought by a
man called Milchu who put him to work
shepherding his flock on a mountain
side.
One night Patrick had a dream in
which he heard a voice telling him to
leave the mountain side and go down
to the coast where he would find a
boat to take him back home.
When he reached the coast he saw
the boat, as the dream had promised,
but unfortunately as he had no money
the boat’s captain refused to take him.
The boat sailed away, but wasn’t
long at sea when a fierce storm blew
up. The crew fearing death told the
captain that it is vengeance for not
letting the lad aboard. Out of fear they
turned the boat around and went back
for Patrick.
Patrick went on to study to become
a priest and eventually was made a
bishop.
In a recurring dream he heard the
voices of the children of Ireland calling
him back to teach them about God, so
returned to Ireland and went straight to
see his old captor Milchu. This is
where Patrick began converting the
Irish pagan people to Christianity.
While trying to explain the Holy
Trinity he is said to have used a
shamrock leaf to demonstrate how
there could be three separate parts to
the shamrock but only one leaf - and
so the shamrock symbol of Ireland
was born.
St Patrick’s Day is celebrated on
March 17 as it is believed to be the
date St Patrick died.
