From the back room of a salon as Employment Educators and Motivators in 1988 Avonmore Tertiary Institute has evolved from a hairdressing vocational training school to a multi campus private education provider operating throughout New Zealand. Margaret Yates was a well known hairdresser in the 1970s and 80s in Christchurch, known for her high expectations, salons in the central city and her peroxide blonde bob. She traveled with the first New Zealand Hairdressing team to Las Vegas for the world championships in 1984, followed by Paris in 1986 and then Frankfurt in 1988. Margaret received an MBE for services to the Hairdressing Industry in the 1992 Honours List. Due to huge demand Employment Educators and Motivators moved to a large campus in Avonside Drive in 1990. Following a large expansion in Avonside over more than 10 years into multiple programmes in Hospitality, IT, Business Studies and the licensing of Avonmore material to campuses around the country, Avonmore Tertiary Institute as it was now called needed more room at the Christchurch Campus. With students coming to Avonmore from the greater Christchurch area it was time for the Christchurch campus to make the move into Central Christchurch where only one bus was required from nearly anywhere in the city. Avonmore Christchurch was busy and growing across the country. Until the February 2011 earthquake hit. Luckily everyone escaped unharmed, but the buildings did not. The current Christchurch Campus was built in response to the loss of the buildings. Not only has a new purpose built campus offered Christchurch students a safe place to study but has also played a part in bringing hundreds of people back into the central city. Avonmore Christchurch was the first business to be reopened in the Christchurch red zone in 2013 by Former Prime Minister John Key. The new campus on the corner of Hereford and High Street includes a purpose built training salon and cafe that help to truly prepare students for working in industry. Throughout the 90s and 00s Avonmore started to expand to other cities around New Zealand with current Campuses in Christchurch, Tauranga, Rotorua, North Shore and Manukau. Over many years Avonmore has developed multi-intake, hands-on courses run by industry experienced tutors developed on the back of high expectations, quality learning systems and industry experienced tutors. Avonmore's focus in its earlier days through to today has always been on students training in a hands-on environment wherever possible with the aim to produce students that have the hands-on skills that employers need. Graduates are now found around New Zealand and the world in a range of careers. Avonmore has a focus on helping students lift themselves from no or few qualifications to become quality graduates who understand the expectations and requirements of the workplace. With integrated CV development, job search, industry links, quality New Zealand qualifications and history in the industry, graduates are truly ready for their new employers. Over the years many things have changed, except for the passion to see students turned into high quality graduates that contribute to the economy in a positive way. Mike Hadley, Director of Avonmore Tertiary Institute says "Because of the systems that have been developed over many years we know that small classes with hands-on education offer a much more personalised learning experience resulting in high quality work ready graduates. Avonmore has won not once but twice the Private Tertiary Education Provider of the Year award (2006 & 2013) due to our experience over 30 years. Our courses are a spring board for students that come in with low level qualifications and gain not only certificates and diplomas but real work ready skills that will offer them options for the future."
