Introduction Farmers with a View There is a 70km stretch of mountainous coastline in the south of Albania that is referred to by tourism agencies and residents alike as the “Riviera.” As its name suggests, the Riviera has come to resemble a European vacation space in the mould of the Mediterranean stereotype. The name Riviera only entered popular usage here after 1991 though, when a form of tourism, based on the beach, began to emerge as a viable business enterprise. Prior to this, the region had been known only as Bregu i Detit or Bregdet, literally meaning “sea coast.” It was the seafacing side of a rugged mountain range whose remote villages were not maritime in nature but just the outermost edge of the Laberia; an ancient chain of agricultural settlements. Farmers with a view. The shift from an agricultural society protected high in the hills, to one of beach-going entrepreneurs occurred practically overnight. Riviera powerfully evokes a sea coast that is geared toward tourism; an altogether different kind of space. Riviera space is organized with its own logic of urbanization; one that requires physical and visual proximity to the shoreline. Riviera space insists on a completely different cuisine than what existed before as well; of fish, kalamari and octopus, pastas, pizzas and other foods deriving from the romanticization of Greece and Italy and sharing nothing with any local culinary tradition. Riviera implores the space of summer and its mentality: bathing suits, sunglasses, tanning lotion—partying, and glamour—a deliberate association with modern, European youthfulness. Meanwhile, above, the villages of the Bregdet stand idle, gazing out across the space of the new tourism economy that so far has been out of reach to them. These two spaces—these two “sea-coasts”—constitute different worlds separated by elevation. At the beach you eat seafood, ten minutes above you eat roasted goat, and these two messages never intertangle.
