EDITOR’S NOTE
GIRLS,GIRLS,GIRLS
Hello all!
It’s the start of the month and we are here to
present you with yet another serving of Crunchy
and tasty content!
I am super excited about this issue, because
we get to talk about one of my favourite topics,
which is celebrating Girl Power in our industry.
Since the 8th of March is International Women’s
Day, our team thought it would be perfect to give
our take on amazing women who are out there
kicking ass everyday.
Since I was young, I’ve watched my mother
plunge into her career in education with so
much passion, and does all she can to make a
difference in her students’ lives. When she comes
home from work, she plays the role of “wife”
and “mum” with chores and by giving her family
good food on the table each day, together with
an abundant serving of love and care. Watching
her as I grew up made me vowed to be a strong
woman like her one day, where I can achieve
fulfillment in both professional and personal
aspects of my life.
Hence, it has been such a blessing to enter the
social media industry. I’ve gotten to know so
many outstanding, inspirational women who work
hard and make a difference in whatever they do.
I have come to learn that fancy speeches and
big events aren’t the only ways to celebrate
womanhood and feminism. The easiest way you
could do it is by working really hard and being
awesome at what you do. Just like how my mum
has been a role model to me, I urge all girls (and
boys! out there to keep doing what you are doing,
and strive to be the best at it. You never know,
you might just inspire someone else to do
the same.
Read on as we talk about Girl Power, and even
share some interesting facts about gender
difference in social media. We hope you enjoy this
issue of Crunch!
#GIRLBOSS
KITTIE YIYI
Kittie Yiyi was born to stand out. With her quirky fashion style and bubbly personality, she
girl. This petite woman made her fashion debut in 2014 at KL Fashion Week and has never
turned back since. A true definition of a #girlboss, she hustles through to do the best at what
1. HEY, KITTIE! TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m a Fashion Designer and online content
creator. I’m shy at first, but outgoing after we
get to know each other. *giggles*
2. HAVE YOU ALWAYS KNOWN YOU WANTED
TO BE A FASHION DESIGNER SINCE YOU
WERE YOUNG?
Yes. One of the most memorable things I did
was when I cut my room curtain to make my
Barbie doll a dress. I was only 6 years old
at the time and I never stopped chasing my
dream afterwards. It wasn’t easy, but what
dreams are ever made easy?
3. WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST TO
VENTURE INTO THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
I remember there was this one time I watched
a runway show on TV. Seeing all the beauty
of it, it made me realise that I really wanted to
make pretty clothes that appear on stage.
4. SEEING AS FASHION IS OFTEN NOT
ENCOURAGED AS A CAREER PATH IN
MALAYSIA, WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST
STRUGGLES YOU FACED ALONG THE WAY?
The biggest struggle is to get people to
support my unique style. If you have seen my
collections, they are often loud and quirky,
something you won’t usually see or be able
to get off a shelf in any of the retail stores
in Malaysia. To be honest, I really wish that
Malaysians are more expressive and open
when it comes to dressing themselves.
6

5. WHERE DO YOU OFTEN FIND INSPIRATION
FOR YOUR DESIGNS?
Everywhere. It can be found anywhere and at
any time. Sometimes I get inspiration even
when I bathe, and sometimes I get them
through my dreams.
6. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE
WHO IS INTERESTED IN PURSUING A
CAREER IN FASHION?
The best advice is to take the journey
in pursuing it one step at a time. It is so
important to keep the passion burning until
you get there.
7. WE HAVE BEEN LOVING ALL YOUR
COLLECTIONS, NOT TO MENTION THE VERY
RECENT SPRING SUMMER COLLECTION
AS WELL AS THE RECENT SUPERCREW
COLLABORATION. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT
FROM KITTIE YIYI COLLECTION IN 2018?
It will be more ready-to-wear and affordable.
Do keep a lookout! ;)
TO MALAYSIA, WITH LOVE
“SO, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO
GET MARRIED AH?”
Why aren’t you trying
to get married?
Susan Yong
That was the first time I ever got scolded by a
stranger on the LRT, and I doubt it’s going to be
the last.
It’s 2018, and women are still being harangued to
get married as quickly as possible. Despite the
rapid modernisation of our society, there are still
traditional and cultural expectations to deal with.
As a product of an extremely mixed interracial
marriage (between my parents, they have got 7
races in total), I am lucky enough to escape cultural
pressure from my parents. It is thanks to my
Eurasian heritage that I was raised with a mix of
Western and Asian values, more so the former than
the latter. This helped stave off pressure a great
deal, but it doesn’t stop pressure coming from
society itself.
A fact that was vexingly and hilariously proven by
my experience on the LRT.
10

Nicole Tan
There are many others as well.
A few of the most recent being
conversations with different
Uber drivers, all of whom upon
learning of my heritage and
single status, made comments.
“I wonder who you’ll marry…” one
said jokingly, aware of the racial
divide that extends to dating and
marriage. “At your age too. You’d
have to marry a foreigner.”
While this is a vast
generalisation, it is true that
there is an expectation for
women to marry by a certain
age- and if a woman stays
single beyond that age, she is
somehow perceived as unhappy
or incomplete. God forbid she
chooses to stay unmarried
as well.
I’m not saying that marriage, or
at least companionship, isn’t
important. It is. It just shouldn’t
be used as a standard to define
women. In more extreme
cases, there are parents who,
upon realising their daughter is
getting a bit too “old”, would find
ways to push her into marriage.
It can come in the form of not
allowing her access to her own
hard-earned money, harassing
her to marry their chosen suitor
(even if he’s unsuitable) or
controlling certain aspects of
her life. Does she want to travel?
Or to fulfill her dream? Well, too
bad. Not until she’s married.
Is marriage so important that it’s worth ruining your own daughter’s life for?
There is something frightening about this mindset that I don’t want to think about, but
it is there. And it is something single, and especially career-minded single women deal
with at least to some degree.
The most ironic thing about this situation is that it is often those who try to enforce
this way of living that have very unhappy marriages. The same can be said for those
who give into it.
Perhaps I’m simply shooting myself in the foot, or perhaps it’s because I know there
is a way of living that goes beyond cultural bindings that I’m choosing to postpone
marriage. I know who I am, and I know how much I’d hate myself and or anyone who
gets in the way of my ambition. Yes, it’s a scary thing to do in marriage-oriented Asia,
but it’s better to be alone than to be married and unhappy. And it’s definitely better to
be alone than to be with the wrong person.
I choose myself, and I implore women who have dreams of their own to do the same
for themselves.
Whether you want to marry early, or postpone it to further your career, or to stay
unmarried, you deserve to have the life you want.
TREND REPORT
‘MEN ARE FROM MARS,
WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS’
ON SOCIAL MEDIA TOO?
So, this famous quote to show the differences between men and women has
always been used for various situations, especially when it comes to face-to-face
communication.
But since social media has become one of the most used platforms for communication
in this era, I cannot help but wonder, does this gender difference show up on social
media as well?
First, let’s take a look at the most obvious difference, which is the type of social media
platforms men and women prefer.
MEN VS WOMEN: IT’S APPARENT ALMOST IMMEDIATELY
Have you ever scrolled through your Instagram feed and noticed that the majority of
users are female? Or that Reddit users are predominantly male? I’ve always considered
the possibility that it could be attributed to not having followed a substantial amount
of either gender to make that generalisation. As it turns out, my perception is right on
point; about 58% of users on Instagram are female while the other 42% are male.
Females are generally predominant across most social media but that doesn’t mean
men are scarce on these platforms. You’d be surprised to know that they’ll actually be
catching up soon!
It’s also interesting to note how both genders’ usage of social media differs from
each other.
14

Source: Community member Charliecmh
MEN VS WOMEN: HOW
DO THEY USE SOCIAL
MEDIA PLATFORMS
DIFFERENTLY?
Recent studies have shown
that female social media
users use it as a platform to
share their personal lives,
and to reconnect with old
relationships or forge new
ones. Males, on the other
hand, tend to use it as a tool
to seek business opportunities
by means of building
influence.
These findings bring us to
the conclusion that women
tend to be more expressive
in terms of their willingness
to share personal issues and
that in contrast, men prefer to
discuss more abstract topics
such as politics, business and
news.
This explains why females
are predominant on platforms
such as Facebook, Twitter
and Instagram which offer
greater flexibility for them to
be expressive - whether that
be with an “Outfit of the Day”
picture or simply a Tweet
about a random thought.
Source: Kittie Yiyi
15

Here’s another difference: males are less hesitant
to form new relationships with the opposite
gender compared to females due to less time
being spent on social media. Examples of this
would be being open to the idea of meeting
a partner on social dating sites, connecting
with other professionals on LinkedIn, sharing
and discussing their thoughts on forums such
as Reddit and sharing musical passions on
SoundCloud.
As a result, content shared by the two genders
differ greatly. Kittie’s picture is an example of the
type of photograph a vast majority of females
prefer to share to show self-expression.
What about males, though? Glance at your
Instagram feed and you’d quickly notice that
males are most likely to share photos of them
with other individuals, or photos containing their
achievements or creative works.
MEN VS WOMEN: ON A FINAL NOTE...
So here we are with the conclusion, peeps! The
saying, “Men are from Mars, Women are from
Venus” deeply applies even on social media.
We can see a clear distinction in the form of
communication of both genders on sharing
content online.
That said, whether you are trying to grow your
social media platforms, or if you are trying to
promote your brand or product, understanding
this difference can give you a better idea as to
which platform you would like to utilise to reach
the correct demographics.
With that, we would like to embrace the fact that
men and women are made differently, because
this way, our world (and social media world) get
to be filled with a wider variety of content for us
to enjoy.
