2.20 The fixed syllabic metres: vaṇṇacchandas<br />

(varṇacchandas) type 2<br />

(a.k.a. akkharacchandas [Skt: akṣaracchandas])<br />

These metres can be divided <strong>in</strong>to 3 k<strong>in</strong>ds accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>ir verse<br />

structure:<br />

1) Samavutta, has <strong>the</strong> same l<strong>in</strong>e repeated four times.<br />

2) Addhasamavutta, has two dissimilar l<strong>in</strong>es repeated.<br />

3) Visamavutta, has four dissimilar l<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

The more popular <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se fixed metres, Upajāti, Vaṁsaṭṭhā, Rucirā,<br />

and Rathoddhatā, and Svāgatā have been described <strong>in</strong> 2.8, 2.12, &<br />

2.14 above.<br />

Some o<strong>the</strong>rs occur, which we may outl<strong>in</strong>e here:<br />

Pamitakkharā (from gaṇacchandas):<br />

1 We must take <strong>the</strong> 1st syllable as pādādigaru.<br />

2 The 2nd gaṇa is short as it stands, we could read caraṇaṁ to correct <strong>the</strong><br />

metre.
