Kia ora and greetings,
Wow, excuse the pun, but isn’t the year of 2018 Marching on!
The months of March and April start seeing the conclusion of our summer based sectional
activities and the commencement and roll out of those that provide autumn/ winter sports
and competitions.
I would like to take a little time to reflect on some really positive and successful results our
club has achieved this last month or so.
In no particular order, firstly congratulations to our award winning gardener, Micheal Marquet
and the team from Turf Tech for being awarded the Riccarton WMC Trophy in the 2018 CBA
Summer Garden competition run by the Christchurch Beautifying Association.
I’m sure you’ll all agree that after such a hot, dry summer our gardens on the Hargood Street
entrance-way were once again as bright, colourful and beautiful as ever!
While on the gardening theme, I do want to mention and thank the on-going contribution that
our very active ‘Garden section’ make to our club. Both Di and Gordon lead this group well and
of course Arnold’s passion and contributions are timeless. My heartiest congratulations to the
winners of their many and various competitions held over the summer growing season!
A composite bowls team representing the Woolston club won the premier event, The Moase
cup at the recently completed Club’s New Zealand National tournament held out at the
Papanui club.
The winning team consisted of skip, John Mears, Robbie Osborne, Brian Hemmi and Roger
Glendinning. Congratulations to these gentlemen!
Our golfers have also shared in some success!
Firstly, our no 1 golf team lead by young Graeme Birchfield, with olds heads Steve Campbell,
Tuffey Tait and John Parkin won the Best gross score Trophy at the Club’s NZ South Island
tournament held recently in Oamaru. Rumour has it Birchy was outstanding however this was
a fine team result and especially winning from a field of 43!
Our second success on the greens was the Woolston Club invitation team winning the Gaming
Machine distributors “Main Door” Ambrose golf tournament held at Waitikiri golf club
recently.
A fairly dodgy looking team of Andy Chivers, Murray Turnbull, GM, Tim Marsh and yours truly
hung on grimly to win this event by half a shot!
It was nice to get one over the other 35 or so Club and Pub teams from around Canterbury
and beyond that participated in this annual event.
And so to conclude, as the saying goes “Winners are grinners” but I do want to temper that by
saying there is just as much enjoyment and pleasure to be had by just participating and having
fun!!
Until next month
Regards, Ian
Hi all,
Another month has raced on by and as the seasons change we have seen some pretty unusual
weather in the last couple of weeks so hopefully Autumn is a little more settled. There
has been plenty happening in February and lots to look forward to in March.
I would like to welcome Sarah Anderson to the position of Function & Events Manager who
joins us with a wealth of food and beverage experience and whom I am sure will make a real
and positive contribution to the Club in her role. She has already met and introduced herself
to a number of members and sections so please make her feel welcome as she settles in.
Lots of action on the sporting front with England’s cricket tour against the Black Caps continuing
throughout the month. Super Rugby is up and running again with a hard fought victory
for the Crusaders in round one getting them off to a good start as they look to defend their
title in 2018. This means our annual “rugby tipping competition” is underway, always keenly
contested and comes with plenty of banter, only one “tipper” will win!!
Entertainment and activity aplenty in the coming weeks with the St Patrick’s Day party on
Saturday 17 th and we’ll be going green. The Wine Night is back on Thursday 22 nd , $10 tickets
includes tastings, nibbles and the chance to win some prizes and is a popular event so don’t
miss out. Easter falls at the end of March this year and Good Friday has been getting bigger
each year. The Vague as Brothers” will be back to rock the house and the annual Easter Egg
hunt will be on Easter Sunday which is a fun filled family event.
We are currently refreshing the games and rituals to kick back off in early March, details will
be hot off the press shortly. Whitford’s restaurant has some cracking deals on throughout
the week from “Pizza Tuesdays”, “Meal Deal Wednesday”, “Free dessert Fridays” and “Kids
eat free on Sunday” that all add some extra bang for your dollar.
I would also like to congratulate some fantastic sporting achievements during February. The
Club was represented at the Clubs NZ Outdoor Bowls National Tournament at the Papanui
Club and won the Premier Event – the Moase Cup and were also 3rd equal in the Kelly Plate.
Our golfers also won the Wilson Distillers Cup at the South Island Charted Clubs Golf tournament
in Oamaru. More details in the newsletter but well done all.
Also well done to Michael Marquet who won 1 st place in the Christchurch Beautifying Association
Garden Awards for the beautifully presented gardens along the driveway at the front
of the Club.
Have a great month and catch up around the Club, Tim.

POOL SECTION
The Pool Section recently held their A G M recently which was combined with their
“Open Day” and as a result there was a good turnout. A new committee was elected
and welcomed on board and a number of Notices of Motions were presented and
passed unanimously.
The 2018 Interclub season is due to start on Tuesday 21st March for Premier and 1 st
division players and on Wednesday 22nd March for 2 nd and 3rd division players. We
have 5 teams competing in the Inter-club competition this year and the committee
wishes teams and players all the best for the 2018 season. The Richmond Club Pool
Section will also be playing their ‘home games’ and ‘in-house tournaments’ out of
Woolston this year too and we would like to welcome them to the Club and wish them
all the best too. There will be 4 teams using the tables on Tuesday nights and 6 teams
on Wednesday nights. This means that there will be 32 players plus team reserves and
supporters at the Club on Tuesday nights and 48 players plus reserves and supporters
on Wednesday nights. Darryl from On Cue will be installing a new table to cater for the
number of teams and players who will be playing out of Woolston and we would like
to thank Darryl and On Cue for their continued support of the Club.
This year Woolston will be hosting 4 major tournaments with players coming to Woolston
from other Clubs around the area.
Those tournaments are;-
The Canterbury 8 Ball B Grade Singles tournament on 3 - 4 March in the Sports Bar
The Geraldine Early Bird All Grade singles tournament on 10 – 11 March in the Sports
Bar
The Canterbury 8 Ball Pairs tournament on 28 – 29 July in the Sports Bar and the
The Ian Davison Ladies Drawn Pairs tournament on 30 June – 1 July in the Mezzanine
area
There will also be 22 in-house tournaments from Woolston and Richmond Pool Sections
being played at the Club on various Saturdays and Sundays as well.
2018 is going to be a busy year for the Club and the Pool Section would like to thank
Club Management for their support and would also like to prematurely thank the Duty
managers and bar staff for their service. Finally to all teams and players we wish you a
happy and successful year.

QUOITS
The Quoits section had their first game after the holidays on Sat 27th January. The
tournament was for the Dave Copeland Trophy between Woolston, Ashburton and
Richmond.
There was a very good turn out for the day and the weather stayed nice for us. Everyone
was in high spirits after the Christmas break and this may have been why an amazing
14 ringers (where the quoit goes onto the pin achieving 3 points) were produced
on the day. The first round produced 4 of them so the stage was set for an exciting
day. Ross from Ashburton got 4 of the ringers and then various players got the rest,
probably only about 3 or 4 players didn't get one. The trophy was played between
drawn pairs so a fair mixture of teams were produced. The winners on the day were
Terry (Woolston) and Jimmy (Richmond). Also we were pleased to have a player return
to quoits to play for Woolston Club.
John Saundercock played well for the first time playing for ages and his family was
there for support. Welcome back. Another of our social members has also started having
a few games and is showing much promise. Steph Pavelka has a good technique
probably because her Mum and Dad play too, must be in the genes.
After all the games there was a BBQ followed by cream buns which are a tradition at
this game. Great day had by all and everyone always helps with the various chores.
Next big game was down at Ashburton for the Waitangi day tournament held on Saturday
3rd February. Woolston had a good day there and bought back 2 trophies they
won on the day. Unfortunately one of the Ashburton players passed away before
Christmas so they are down a member but are still determined to carry on regardless.
So at these sort of games if one club is down in players the others are quite happy to
make up the numbers, so that everyone gets a game. As usual Ashburton put on a
lovely lunch on arrival and after the games afternoon tea before everyone set off
home.
In between our trophy games with the other clubs we play on Saturdays for our own
interclub trophies.
The Old Timers trophy was held on 17th February with a good turnout of 14 players.
The weather was kind to us again. This game is run by the Pavelka family who have
been on the quoits circuit for a very long time. They provided the prizes and the food
for lunch and BBQ later. Thanks to all of them for their work. The winners on the day
were Trish (Ashburton) and Terry (Woolston). Everyone had a good time. We also
would like to wish Leigh Pavelka a speedy recovery from his recent surgery and hope
Leigh and Marian are in good spirits.

HAPPY GARDENING!

FISHING
We have been out a few times so far this year.. our first was a surf casting comp at Baileys
Aerials for the Dennett Graham trophy and the Kelvin Derry cup. a few decent sized Kahawai
were caught but Larissa won the competition when she landed a 4.5kg shark just as
we were about to finish for the day, which meant she won nearly all of the trophies available..
the only ones she couldn't win were specifically for the juniors.
Following on from there, a group of us headed off to Twizel at Waitangi weekend to hopefully
get some nice fish. Yeah Right !!!! Day 1 had 4 boats out on Ohau C and 1 boat on
the Aviemore canal and lake. Result.. only 3 fish caught.. well the next day had to be
better. Surely?? Wrong !! 5 boats out on the water for 5-7 hours and no fish. Didn't matter
what we tried.. they were not biting. Even with a down rigger which goes right to the
bottom couldn't get a nibble. Oh well.. that's fishing. new plan was to try our luck there
on the way home next day. As we got closer to Ohau C dam, we could see some seriously
decent white caps on the water.. to venture into it, we all needed surf boards such was
the height of them.. ok.. lets look At Lake Ruataniwha as its on the way home. Good idea
but unfortunately the white caps were there as well so we thought lets be safe not sorry
and had an early trip home via the famous Fairlie Pie Shop to stock up and then onto what
we know as The Red Barn on the north side of Geraldine, for some lunch.. a place we think
is well worth a visit.
Recently we had surf casting comp at Rakaia. Not bad surf wise, a warm day and a tail
wind to help get some throwing distance. Most of us caught juvenile dog fish or baby
shark species, except Trev, who caught a lovely 5.6kg elephant fish which won the comp.
The fish fillets were very nice for tea that night. Coming up is a trip to Lake Brunner and
our annual Champion of Champions comp in mid March. Both of these are usually well
contested. C'mon Woolston, lets get a major share of those trophies again.
Trev with his Elephant Fish!
