PRESIDENT`S
MESSAGE
Hello Members,
I want to thank you all for being a part of our SCI Chapter. I
have just returned from Calgary where our chapter received
the W.I.S.E. Award given out by the Conservation Education
Foundation of Alberta. This was a huge honor for our
chapter in recognition of all the great work we do in the
Province.
As we go about our business doing good things for the
Province, our government and special interest groups are
trying to take away our wild Alberta from us. The Bighorn
area and watersheds are being threatened to be closed
for recreation, hunting and fishing by a group called Y2Y
(Yellowstone to Yukon). This group wants to close the
eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta to all
hunting, fishing and recreational opportunities. Their goal
is to create a large wildlife corridor and close our Alberta
opportunities down! Please read the insert enclosed with
this newsletter. Get informed of Y2Y and what the NDP
government is trying to take away from us all. Write your
MLA, sign the enclosed Alberta ATV Association Petition and
mail it in!
SCI Alberta has written letters to the Minister of Environment
to argue our stance of keeping these Alberta areas open to
all Albertans; and, if there are problems that impact wildlife
in these areas we endeavor to create regulations not
closures so we all can enjoy our outdoors!
Get involved like your way of life depends on it! It truly does.
Good Hunting
Northern Timber Wolf... Take 2
(Written by Coby Mahan)
How many of us have dreamed of an actual wolf hunt.
This is the one apex predator I have always dreamed
of encountering on a hunt solely for them in wild
Alberta!
It all came together this winter when myself and my
good friend, Bill Davie went on our second hunt for
wolf with my good friend Del Bredeson. Del has been
a trapper and outfitter in Northern Alberta for over
50 years. His vast knowledge of wolves and
trapping is truly remarkable. We had spent
three days last winter hunting over our
bait with Del only to have a power
line cutting crew cut it short
when they showed up in
the area and quickly
made enough noise to chase any chance of a wolf
sighting away for our hunt!
This time was to be our redemption! Our bait was set
on a lake that was very remote. Wolf sign was all over
the northern bush area, and the blind was warm and
comfortable for our long days of waiting.
DAY 1
Del lead the way into the blind early in the dark. After
about a 20 minute sled ride we followed him to the
blind through the bush. It was a cold morning and had
snowed the night before. On the last approach to the
blind Bill had stepped on a grouse buried in the snow.
As it blew up and flew away it scared the hell out of us
all, something we would laugh about most of the day.
We spent the day in the blind watching the ravens as
they hopped around on the bait. We glassed the bush
line on the other side of the lake at 750 yards dreaming
of a wolf stepping out to the bait. As the daylight ended
so did our hopes of a wolf sighting that day.
DAY 2
It was an early start again and as we headed down the trail
with the sled I was thinking to myself this was really Day
5 of sitting if I counted the days from last year. I figured
we deserved a sighting and some good luck today. As
we walked through the thick bush on the way to the lake
another grouse blew out, just as the first day. I figured
this was good luck! How often could this happen?
As Bill and I settled down in the blind it wasn’t long before
daylight started to show us the bait on the lake. At about
9am we had our first look at something other than a bird
at the bait...a coyote slowly made his way to the bait and
he helped himself for about a half hour before a thick fog
5 |
rolled across the lake.
Just shortly before noon the fog started to lift from the
lake exposing the bait pile once again. Bill and I started
to check out our lunch that Evelyn, Del’s wife, had packed
for us. As we were digging through our sandwiches and
treats I just remember looking out the small window of
the blind and in a very high whisper said, “Bill Wolves”!
Five large timber wolves closed the distance very quickly
on a full out run with their tails flagging. They were
kings, not slowed down by anything, jumping and biting
at the ravens as they got to the bait. Now, the problem
with five wolves at your bait is they don’t stand still long
enough for two guys to get settled in for a good shot on

two together at the same time!
No sooner did we get ready to go they started moving
off the bait and heading down the lake! They were not
sticking around for long. Bill and I had a deal to shoot
on the count of three. As they left Bill said I got the last
one, which my scope was on so I immediately jumped to
the second last and counted quickly; 1...2...Boom! Down
went the big dog I was on and quickly Bill shot; Boom!
Boom! And down went the second wolf. As the rest ran
off the lake we kept an eye on the two large wolves we
downed laying on the lake.
I grabbed the range finder and ranged the wolves. Mine
was a jogging shot at 250 while Bill shot his at 280 running
dead away. We had a celebration in the blind for a few
minutes recounting how fast that all happened. From
the time we first saw the pack until it was all over may
have been a minute and a half.
I felt so good as Bill and I drove out on the lake realizing
what we just accomplished. Two good friends, two great
timber wolves. It was the perfect Take 2!
If you have always dreamed of a Northern Wolf Hunt I
would highly suggest our good friend Del. Take a good
friend like I did, spend some great time learning about
the trap line life and if you are just patient enough with
your friend...you also may Take 2!
OUR CHAPTER ACHIEVEMENTS
2016-2017
Your SCI – Drayton Valley Chapter experienced a most successful 2016/2017 year in support of SCI’s mission
toward hunting conservation, education and humanitarian endeavors. At an international level a memorable
occasion was the privilege of being awarded the 2016 SCI Chapter of The Year Award.
We continued with our commitment toward our primary humanitarian project; that being our Fishing Dock for
seniors residing within care centres and individuals with disabilities. Our local Board and Chapter members
have contributed in excess of 500 volunteer hours toward the operation and maintenance of the dock this year.
Over the summer months we have been very fortunate to have a variety of user groups visit the dock, with
some senior groups travelling from two hours away to visit the dock and enjoy the benefits it has to offer. In
total this summer we have had over 150 individuals visit the dock!
In support of SCIFs missions on a global scale, our Chapter was extremely pleased to be involved in the delivery
a Blue Bag this past year. This delivery was organized through our affiliation with Hearts of Lushoto, which is a
local community organization we have partnered with for a number of years. This blue bag delivery resulted
in the provision of essential education materials for the village school and a laptop for their educator.
As part of our commitment to sustain our hunting heritage and providing our youth the opportunity to enjoy
the great outdoors, we facilitated a youth hunter training program in May 2017 within our community of
Drayton Valley free of charge to youth 17 years of age and under, with 6 youth and 3 adult participants.
The Drayton Valley Chapter of Safari Club International is very proud to continue their support of the National
Archery in Schools Program (NASP). Over the past year we maintained our current commitment to the
program by way of supporting needed upgrades to current school participants kits. We also supported the St.
Anthony’s Drayton Valley Mini-Shoot through the provision of trophies and medals for the youth participants.
Of significant mention is our involvement in the coordination of the 2017 NASP Provincial Shoot right here
in Drayton Valley in partnership with the Brazeau Bowbenders and AHEIA. This shoot saw over 1000+ youth
archers participate in the 4 day event held within the WellHouse Supply building. It was an amazing event!
Drayton Valley is extremely proud to be one of the most involved and recognized NASP communities in Alberta.
Since its inception our Chapter has committed in excess of $150,000 toward the NASP program. It is our
greatest hope that this program brings a new level of enjoyment to those students who may not have had the
chance to shoot target archery, and that our local youth’s participation in the program may spark an enjoyment
for the outdoors and all that it has to offer! Our goal is that this opportunity will impact children for years to
come and raise awareness for Safari Club International and its educational efforts. The NASP Program is a great
addition to our educational system and we hope it brings great enjoyment to all involved!
In partnership with other Alberta SCI Chapters we were also very proud to be a part of the Alberta Hunter
Harvest initiative, supplying food banks and Alberta’s less fortunate with 8500 pounds of wild game venison.
Over the past year our conservation efforts have focused on the collaring of cougars within local WMUs to
study their ranges and mortality levels. We also aided in the fight against the closure of grizzly bear hunting in
British Columbia.
To you, our members and supporters we thank you for your many contributions. It is your commitment and
support of the SCI Drayton Valley Chapter that has contributed to the accomplishments that have been achieved.
If you are not yet a member of SCI, please do consider joining SCI tonight to help the only organization that will
protect your freedom to hunt.
MEMBERSHIP
We know that the strength of our chapter is held in the membership that you maintain. We thank you
for your support. An active membership provides you with this newsletter along with SCI International
publications which both keep you up to date on the world of SCI, and provide input and stories about
local and international efforts that your membership is supporting. Should you not be receiving your
mail from SCI International please contact Barb Bowen at 780-542-1379 or babowen1@yahoo.com.
You should receive your literature within two months of signing up. We are requesting of our members
to provide us with their email addresses so that we can develop an email distribution group to keep our
members informed of meetings and events that all Chapter members are welcome to attend. You can
share this with us by sending us an email at board@scidraytonvalley.com. Thank you for your support
and for being part of a local volunteer effort that is dedicated to creating memorable outdoor memories
for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts alike. If you are aware of a potential new or renewing member,
please encourage them to join by simply filling out the renewal form included here and send it to the
