From the Vicarage, March 2018.
Lent arrived on Ash Wednesday, which this year coincided with
Valentine’s Day, much less important in the church’s calendar, but
much more in the secular calendar; but then who wouldn’t prefer
dinner for two and a bunch of roses to a smudged ash cross on the
forehead and a reminder that we are dust and to dust we shall
return?
Actually I wouldn’t. I’m all for roses and chocolates, and unusually for
me remembered both, which made me popular in the Vicarage;
but the beginning of Lent is much more important than an obscure
Roman martyr who has come to be associated, bafflingly, with
romance. Lent is important because without fast we have no feast,
and if we want to walk, like the apostles, into a new dawn on Easter
Day, then we must, like them, follow Jesus to the Cross first. This is not
as some critics of Christianity would have it, because we like to be
miserable, but because we must understand what Christ has done
for us in order to open the gates of heaven; and so that we might
learn to live in the light that streams from it during our time here on
earth.
Lent is not a torture chamber, or a depressive episode, it is a gym
and a schoolroom, places where we train our minds and bodies to
turn away from the things that limit and restrict and stunt us, and to
turn towards the dawn as it begins to lighten the far horizon.
If you could not make Ash Wednesday come along and join us on
Wednesdays in Lent at 7 here in church when you can, as we
continue to explore that Lenten dynamic of turning to the light; and
praying together and supporting each other, enter ever more
deeply into the mystery and the wonder of Jesus Christ.
Yours in Christ,
Fr Richard.
FARMING IN
FINEDON
More than 250 advance copies of
Farming in Finedon were ordered
and these have now been
distributed or collected. We’ve
been delighted by the positive
reactions of those who purchased
the book. Only a handful of copies
from the first two batches remain
unsold.
You can still obtain your own copy
of Farming in Finedon, but we
envisage having to order more from
our publisher and it may be several
weeks before the third batch
becomes available.
The cost of Farming in Finedon will
remain at £20, but in cases where
postage is necessary we shall need
to add a further £5 to cover our
costs.
Why not order your copy now?
You will be pleased to know that
Planning Permission for the
replacement of the Tainty Field
railings has been granted. The
Council is waiting to hear if funding
has also been granted from WBC
and as soon as we do, we shall start
the project. There will be some
disruption to the houses opposite as
parking on the grass verge along the
fencing will not be possible whilst the
work is taking place. I’m sure the
contractors will keep any disruption
to a minimum and I shall be writing to
each house effected to let them know
when the work will be starting.
The Council has brought the railings
along the Rec, Wellingborough Road
to the attention of WBC and they are
due for repair via Norse shortly.
The Council has completed the tree
work in the Cemetery on Station
Road, Finedon and you will have
noticed that Norse have also been
working on the pathways. Much of
the vegetation that has grown up has
been removed and if your family has
a grave that you are responsible for,
please tend to it as soon as possible.
The Cemetery certainly looks much
smarter now.
The Council still has not heard from
NCC about the library nor the final
outcome of it’s budget process, I will
keep you informed as soon as we
know via the website.
As usual, please feel free to contact
me should you have anything you
wish to bring to the Council’s
attention. Providing it is within the
Council’s remit, we will try our best to
make Finedon a better place to live.
March
"The word 'March' comes from the
Roman 'Martius'. This was originally
the first month of the
Roman calendar and
was named after
Mars, the god of war.
March was the
beginning of our
calendar year.
We changed to the
'New Style' or
'Gregorian calendar in 1752, and it is
only since then that the year began
on 1st January.
The Anglo-Saxons called the
month Hlyd monath which means
Stormy month, or Hraed monath
which means Rugged month.
All through Lent the traditional games
played are marbles and skipping. The
games were stopped on the stroke of
twelve noon on Good Friday, which in
some places was called Marble Day
or Long Rope Day.
The game of marbles has been
played for hundreds of years and
some historians say that it might have
been started by rolling eggs. In the
past, round stones, hazelnuts, round
balls of baked clay and even cherry
stones have been used."
In My Day
the ramblings of Hubert
In my day it was about this time of
year that folk would step outside for
the first time since November and
check on how much damage had
been done to their houses during the
winter.
Now back then there were still a fair
few thatched cottages in the town and
our local Thatcher found herself very
busy. Yes, I said ‘her’ that’s because
we had the first lady Thatcher in the
country. Denise Roberts was only
young but had been helping her dad
thatch since the moment she climbed
her first ladder.
Course, she attracted a fair bit of
attention when she started. Mind you
thatching often drew a crowd of kids
who were fascinated by the skill
involved.
Now it just so happened that we had
a journalist called Lee Harper, living
up Sibley Road. He did some work for
what was a new book in those days;
the Guinness Book of Records. He
quickly realised that he had a new
entry for the now world famous book.
And once the next issue was
published Denise’s entry caused a
spark of interest in records and before
you knew it there was a mini epidemic
of world record attempts.
Someone suggested the world’s
longest tug-of-war with Burton.
Unfortunately, Burton bottled it and
their team didn’t turn up. However, we
did get an entry in for the longest
rope.
F.C.S.S.E.S. had a go at the longest
Panto record but had to call it off after
two days when a fight broke out when
the song-sheet competition woke up
several audience members.
Most successful was local baker
Barry Merry. He managed to create a
huge apple pie about six feet across
in his back garden. Unfortunately, this
was dogged with bad luck.
Having filled the pie with apple sauce
he went back into the house to collect
the pie lid. While he was away,
Denise Roberts (remember her)
slipped while carrying some reeds up
to Barry’s roof and fell into the pie.
Barry came out, unaware of the new
ingredient in his pie. He slapped the
lid on and went to fetch the buckets of
custard.
Later, that day at the official opening
of the delicious desert, the Mayor who
was doing the opening, was surprised
to find a young lady covered in apple
sauce trying to eat her way to safety.
The accident gave Barry the idea of
baking cakes with young ladies
inside, who would burst out and sing
Happy Birthday. Unfortunately, the
accident left Denise with an apple
allergy. She sued Barry and the court
case went on for ages. Good news for
Lee Harper he wrote a best seller
about the whole event. Perhaps
you’ve read it; The Thatcher in the
Pie.
T
he Bishop of Seoul, Peter
Lee, paid a three-day visit to
Peterborough at the end of
January and beginning of
February. Bishop Peter was in the
country to attend the annual
Anglican Communion New
Bishops' Conference in Canterbury
over the first ten days of February,
but he was pleased to be back in
Peterborough en-route.
“It’s my second visit to
Peterborough – my first visit was
five years ago,” explained Bishop
Peter, “so I’m really happy and
delighted to see old friends. It’s
nice to be back in a city I know
very well.”
Bishop Peter was consecrated as
Bishop of Seoul in Seoul Cathedral
last April – a service that Bishop
Donald attended – following seven
years as Dean of the Cathedral.
But despite his 26 years’
experience since ordination,
Bishop Peter admitted that his new
role is a rather daunting one.
“It gives me a big sense of
responsibility, which can be quite
heavy. You are sometimes awake
during the night because you have
responsibility for the Church, and
have to make difficult decisions.”
“But at the same time, it is a huge
privilege to share witness and
encouragement to the people of
God. It is a great joy.”
Bishop Peter’s task is all the
more challenging when one looks
at South Korea as a whole – a
country where Christianity has hit
He’s a Seoul man
something of a plateau.
“After a period of rapid growth, it
has been quite stagnant since the
1990s, and has been slowly
declining,” said Bishop Peter. “There
are many factors for this, but I see
the root of all those reasons being
that the Church hasn’t been able to
be the Church it’s called to be. It’s
been self-centred, rigid, static and
inward-looking in its teaching and in
its values. It’s lost its calling and
identity as the body of Christ, and
many Christians have been let down
and disappointed.”
And of course Christians have also
been facing difficulties (albeit
different ones) over the border in
North Korea – a situation that
Bishop Peter has witnessed firsthand.
“I’ve been once and I’ve seen
Christians in North Korea, but it’s

Photo: Bishop Donald and Bishop Peter
hard to tell that they are a Christian
church,” said Bishop Peter. “Before
the Korean War (1950–1953), there
were many Christians there, and
since then I’ve wondered whether
there are secret small groups.
However, there is a severe level of
persecution – it’s doubtful how many
have survived.”
“There is still hope, though. There
has been communication between
the North Korean Union and the
National Church Council of (South)
Korea (NCCK). It’s a good thing that
Christians are merging together –
hopefully we can influence and bring
changes for the future.”
Bringing this hope and influence is
a huge motivation for Bishop Peter.
His motto for 2018 is ‘From believers
to disciples!’, and his vision is that
this is taken up by all believers
within the Seoul Diocese.
“The motto means that we believe
13
we have a unique calling from
God, and to be faithful to our
calling – pursuing our aim to grow
as an Anglican Church. We are
focusing on building up our
identity, so we can be truly
ourselves as disciples of Christ.”
And Bishop Peter is aware that
the association he has with
Peterborough Diocese will assist
him in achieving these aims. The
connection between the two
dioceses is one that he finds
supportive and motivating, and it is
a relationship that he hugely
appreciates.
“The link we’re building with
Peterborough is very positive, very
inspiring and helpful. We treasure
and cherish our link with our
brothers and sisters in
Peterborough Diocese, and I hope
we may grow together.”

Sarah Brown – Peterborough Cathedral’s new Canon Missioner
W
elcome to Peterborough,
Sarah! You’ve previously
been a parish priest in this
diocese. What will the role of Canon
Missioner involve?
I am responsible for helping ensure
that anyone who comes to the
Cathedral gains an understanding of
the meaning and purpose of the
building, and is signposted towards
Jesus. It is also my job to help the
Cathedral look outwards in mission
and love – both to the city and to the
wider diocese. I am inherently a
missioner, so am always driven to try
to show the light of Christ in some of
the darker aspects of life, and make
sure that everyone knows that this is
their place and that God is their God.
I believe that this will be a ‘link role’
between the Cathedral and the
diocese. In what ways are you
hoping for this to happen?
I think that the Cathedral could do
better as a ‘mothership’ to the parish
churches – supporting and even
resourcing some of their local
mission. I’d like parishes or deaneries
to invite me to meet them to think
about how we might make such a link
happen.
What for you will define a successful
role as Canon Missioner?
Whilst faith and ministry are about
so much more than mere numbers, it
will be exciting to have been part of
making more people understand what
we have to offer here. I also harbour
a huge desire to extend the reach of
our ability to help those in need. Your
prayers would be much appreciated.
