Gladys Gallivants - The Gift of the Blarney
There is a wooden plaque on my wall adorned with a
leprechaun and shamrock plus a small piece of rock
stuck on, it reads :
‘Tis only found in Ireland, where leprechauns all roam
And those who seek the crock of Gold, first kiss the
Blarney Stone
So if you’d like to prosper, and your fortune wish to swell
Just kiss this bit of Blarney with its ancient fairy spell.'
Yes, I have kissed the Blarney Stone. My friends rue the
day as one assertion is that it makes the participant
a garrulous individual. Officially it is said to grant the
kisser the gift of eloquence. Well, maybe but the crock
of Gold is still missing!
The actual “kissing” came about when my parents were
planning a holiday from Africa to the British Isles – quite
a travel feat way back in the 60’s. “I want to kiss the
Blarney Stone,” said I, having received a black and white
postcard of Blarney Castle from a school friend who had
travelled to Cork and visited the area. Suppose that was
the start of my bucket list and the collection of souvenirs
like the one above.
We took the overnight ferry from Glasgow; what a
rough crossing! Once in Dublin, we headed to the tourist
bureau to inquire about Blarney Castle. “Well, you
have to go to Corcaign (Cork) then on to Cionn tSaile
(Kinsale). We appeared to have arrived in a foreign
land. It was the time when the street and town names
were being changed into Gaelic. Trying to work out
our destination was great fun although it slowed our
progress.
We eventually caught a local
bus which took us as far as
Cork to meet a connection to
Kinsale and then a rural taxi
which trundled along to a
desolate, overgrown roofless
tower and sundry ruins. “You
have arrived at your destination,
” announced the driver. We
thought we had landed in a
farmer’s field.
We scrambled up a crumbling stone staircase and were
met by two fellows in overcoats and trilbys. We were
helped to lie down backwards and kiss underneath
the parapet while a photograph was taken. Although
sceptical of a successful outcome, we paid the
exorbitant fee of £20 and were thrilled some months
later to receive the pictures.
Nowadays one looks on Google and finds a virtual tour
map and all the tourist facilities. There were none there
in those far off days.
their local community. Home care is flexible, with care
packages scalable to meet your needs at any one time.
Mr and Mrs Harris, who are based in Hastings were
looking for a home care company to support them to
continue living at home. They commented:
“We are very attached to our home and had made the
decision to contact Radfield Home Care after reading
about them in Golden Times. We were very impressed by
their attention to detail and willingness to come up with
a plan which enabled us to continue living in the comfort
of our own home. Their experience and competency
has fully satisfied us, and we would recommend them to
others”.
What to look for when choosing a home care provider:
It is advisable to contact at least two or three domiciliary
care providers local to you and ask them to send you
their brochure and price list. A wide range of services are
available, and providers are usually happy to design a care
plan to your particular requirements. Radfield Home Care
are based in Battle and can deliver care across Hastings
and Rother. They can be contact on 01424 559 202 or
LIVING THE
ALEXANDER
WAY OF LIFE
by Liz Jeffries
I heard this Supremes’ song on the radio
the other day and it reminded me of
something one of my pupils recently told
me. She had been on a mindfulness
course and was finding it very helpful.
It calms the mind and enables clearer
thinking, bringing your attention to the
present instead of worrying about what’s
gone on in the past or what might happen
in the future. What she particularly
remembered was how to use the word
STOP. STOP in this context means:
S Stop (either thinking or doing the thing
that’s causing anxiety)
T
Take three breaths (to calm down)
O Observe (what is happening to you,
e.g., stress in mind and body)
P Proceed (in a way that is less harmful
and less stressful)
My pupil said she finds this a very helpful
practice when depression comes calling.
My ears pricked up! I thought this was a
wonderful mantra I could use myself for
Alexander work. Alexander’s discovery
was all about how we can be responsible
for making life better, whether we want
to relieve stress, or pain. However, that
change has to start with stopping what
we do automatically and habitually,
Stop in the name of Love
becoming aware of our usual pattern of
behaviour and then, if we wish, choosing
to do or think something else. Our
minds are very much involved in the
healing process. Indeed the Alexander
Technique is often described as mindful
embodiment.
As a former chronic back and neck
pain sufferer, my continuing Alexander
experience has been enlightening and
wholly positive, if not a little frustrating
(habits are tough to break), but it has
improved my life beyond measure.
So, next time something is bothering you,
whether it is a thought, or pain, or even a
person, STOP and see what happens!
The Alexander Technique is a lifechanging
skill which can relieve
tension and painful muscular/
skeletal conditions. Please see www.
" Shadows"
by Susie Davison
The kitchen was at the front of the house. It was raining. Sophie
needed something from the freezer in the garage. Sophie was
nervous of the dark. She opened the side door in the kitchen and
crossed the passage to the side door of the garage. Sophie never
liked to reach her hand round for the light switch. She imagined
some hand would grab her. She found the switch, the light was
dim, shapes loomed out at her. Sophie opened the freezer and took
out the frozen peas, talking to herself all the time just to show
she wasn’t scared. She glanced out of the window that looked out
onto the garden. Oh heavens, a face! She gasped. It was her own
reflection.
She hurried back into the kitchen. My imagination she muttered.
Back in the garage the boy was crouched down behind the car. He
had been tramping the lanes wondering where to sleep. There had
been a row at home. He hated his Mother’s boyfriend and felt
he was in the way. So, he packed a few things into his backpack,
pocketed a torch and left. Martin noticed the house because the
garage door was not quite shut. Cautiously he lifted the door and
ducked inside. He could not see much beyond the car. Suddenly, the
side door into the garage opened. The light went on. Footsteps. He
heard a thud and a woman’s voice muttering to herself. He peeped
through the back windscreen of the car, the woman turned around,
he shrank down again.
The light was switched off, the side door shut. Shining his torch
he investigated his surroundings. There was a freezer and a shelf
holding tin foods. He was hungry. Martin found rice pudding.
Using his fingers, he finished two tins. Martin found bread in the
freezer. For tomorrow he thought.
Martin wondered if he dared open the car door, he thought it
might be alarmed. He was tired and the floor was hard, he longed
to lie on the back seat. He started to think things through. If the
garage door had not been shut properly, maybe the car had not been
locked either. He opened the side door and climbed in. Martin
slept. He woke early, anxious to get going, he slid out from under
the door and into the lane. He hurried off.
The next day Sophie was meeting her friend Jacky. The garage
door was stiff, it never did shut properly. She got into the car and
saw two empty tins on the passenger seat. There was a piece of
paper stuck in one of them. She read the note, which said, “Sorry.
Thank you”. Well I never, Sophie thought, her mind was racing
back to last night and her nervous foray into the garage. What a
tale she would have to tell Jacky.
HOSTING AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT
A growing number of local people are discovering
the advantages of hosting international students. Not
only can you benefit financially, but you can also meet
engaging students from all over the world and maybe
pick up a few handy foreign phrases for your holidays.
Being a Host Family is a fantastic and fun cultural
experience. So How do you get started?
We have three local schools advertising here, and they
all offer a different hosting experience. We have had
students from each of these companies staying here
at Golden Times HQ over the years, currently, we are
hosting a young lady from Spain from Sussex Coast
College.
All schools need safe, comfortable accommodation
for their pupils. You don't have to be a family - single
people, flat-sharers and the like are welcome - but you
do need to be able to provide a welcoming environment
and a certain degree of supervision. It's also crucial that
English is the primary language in the home.
Stays vary in duration, depending on whether the
student is attending a full-time course or merely a
summer school, meaning it's easy to dip your toes in for
a short-term trial to see whether hosting suits you.
Generally speaking, most students will have a full
activity programme and are out most of the time. You
will need to make sure you have your own house rules
and set them at the start of the stay, and you should
always have the support of the school itself in dealing
with any problems. So, what are you waiting for?
Brazilian Moqueca Fish Stew - Recipe by Faz Razeen
This is a simple, but tasty recipe which is easy to make and takes about 25-30 minutes. Moqueca is a Brazilian dish based on saltwater
fish stew, with tomatoes, onions, garlic and coriander. It is slowly cooked in a terracotta casserole, optionally served with prawns and
includes, by preference, a mix of boneless white fish such as halibut, turbot, cod, sea bass, swordfish, etc. Moqueca is native to the state
of Espírito Santo and influenced by Native Brazilian, African and Portuguese cuisine. Brazil is known for pairing fish with spicy chillies, lime
and cooling coconut milk, a lovely combination. I have chosen to use cod for this recipe, but you may use any of the fish mentioned above
to suit your own taste. Serves 4, allow 25 minutes to prepare, 15 minutes to cook.
Ingredients :
4 cod steaks 400g, cut into chunks
1-2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive
oil
1 large red onion, thinly sliced
250g cherry tomatoes, cut into
halves
1 teaspoon salt to season
2 tablespoons of soya sauce
2 tablespoons tomato puree
4 cloves minced garlic
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 can 400ml coconut milk
1 red chilli finely chopped.
1 cup sliced assorted sweet and/or
hot peppers
1/4 cup chopped coriander
I lime
Method :
1: Prepare the fish by cutting into square pieces equal
sizes or alternatively leave cod steaks as they are,
season with salt, but you don't have to marinate with
any spices or juices etc.
2: Prepare your mise en place by slicing onions,
assorted sweet and/or hot peppers, tomatoes sliced
chopped garlic and chilli, coarsely chopped
coriander and remainder of the ingredients.
3: Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium
heat. Saute the onion for 2-3 minutes until softened
and then add tomato puree, paprika, cumin,
chopped garlic and chilli into the onions and cook
further for 3-4 minutes.
4: Add in chopped tomatoes and remainder of the
sliced assorted sweet and/or hot peppers and mix
well for a minute and add the coconut milk and soya
sauce and stir gently and place the fish in the pan
ensuring it is fully covered by the stew, cover with a
lid and let it simmer for 6-7 minutes on a medium
heat, after which it should be well cooked and ready
to serve.
Finally, before you serve your Moqueca fish stew
add squeezed lime juice and a handful of coarsely
chopped coriander.

Spring at Pashley Manor Gardens
Open for the season from Easter Saturday 31st March visitors
can expect to see the gardens coming to life with daffodils,
magnolia, camellias and fruit blossoms in bloom.
In late April/early May the spectacular Tulip Festival sees the
gardens carpeted with tulips, creating stunning scenes for
visitors to enjoy. Over winter Pashley’s garden team planted
over 40,000 new top grade bulbs, in 112 varieties, so 2018,
the 24th annual Tulip Festival, will be the biggest tulip display
yet!
Visitors can wander from elegant displays of white lily
flowered and palest cream classic tulips planted around an
old brick terrace, to the open space of sweeping herbaceous
borders covered in a riot of reds and oranges surrounded
by tendrils of bronze fennel, or romantic soft pink peony
flowered blooms cloistered between red brick walls and
pleached pear trees.
Yet more tulips are on display as cut flowers in the Bloms
Bulbs marquee. Bloms, winners of sixty six Chelsea Gold
Medals, are on hand throughout the Festival to share their
knowledge of these beautiful
bulbs and to take orders from
those inspired by the spectacle.
With a café serving locally
sourced and homemade cakes,
scones and light lunches, which
can be enjoyed on the terrace
with gorgeous views of the
gardens; a shop with fabulous
gifts, souvenirs and plants, and
exhibitions of garden sculpture
and floral art, a visit to Pashley
makes a superb day out.
Gardening tips for early to mid Spring
by Phoenix Gardening
Spring is upon us, and things are beginning to
bloom and bud, but you have to be careful in early
spring as the weather can still be icy. Increasingly
we seem to be getting some late frosts, bear in
mind too that it is not only air temperature that is
important but also soil temperature. To help things
along you can use cloches to warm up the soil.
What can we do, it's time to ‘chit' potatoes, remove
your seed potatoes from their net and lay them
out on trays in a cool light but frost-free place.
It sounds obvious but if you've ever forgotten to
remove them from their net, only to return and
find a mass of roots growing through the mesh
you'll understand the job of trying to get them
out without breaking off the shoots. We can sow
hardy annuals, feed and mulch borders and apply
manures and fertilisers where appropriate. If you
have any bare root trees or shrubs now is the time
to plant them. Generally, you can plant containergrown
plants all year round, as long as the soil is
not too cold.
Mid Springtime to get the spuds in the ground.
Plant onion sets. Plant herbaceous plants and if
they are tall plants stake them at the same time,
and it's easier to get the plant supports in early
and keep them contained rather than trying to do
it later. If you grew some sweet peas in pots they
Covering Hastings, St Leonards, Bexhill,
Battle, Fairlight, Rye
can be planted out, alternatively, you can plant
sweet peas outside where they are to flower. There
is still time to plant hardy annuals. If you want
early veg crops, it's good to keep sowing in cold
frames or cloches, if you don't have cloches you
can use horticultural fleece instead. You can also
sow tender vegetables like runner beans or outdoor
tomatoes in your greenhouse or conservatory, to
plant out later. Mid-spring is a busy time, so you
may have to prioritise some jobs. Plants sown in
late spring can often catch up with those planted
earlier if the weather has been on the cold side.
Enjoy your garden!
The Cyrill and Lillian Bishop is officially recognised as a Dunkirk Little Ship
The subject of a 2017 hit film and one of the most
memorable events of WW2, the evacuation of allied troops
at Dunkirk is a story that many local people have a personal
connection with. The Cyril and Lillian Bishop lifeboat sailed
from Hastings to rescue soldiers from Dunkirk, and local
resident Dee Day White was instrumental in bringing her
home. Earlier this year the boat was officially recognised as
being among Dunkirks "little ships."
Dee Day, (Named after being born on D-Day) said: “This old
lady of the sea has been given the recognition she deserves.
On May 30, 1940, the call went out
from the Admiralty asking all small
ships with a shallow draft, capable of
going in close ashore, to make their
way to Dover and Ramsgate. The
Hastings lifeboat, with a scratch crew of
Bill Terrell, George Moon, Jim Terrell,
Ted Terrell, Bill Hilder, Will Martin,
Bodger Barton, Jim White and Fred
Button, made its way to Folkestone then
Dover. The lifeboat was towed to the
Dunkirk beach by a tug called Foremost 87, then took part
in what was to be known as Operation Dynamo. Trapped on
the beach were 380,000 British troops along with French and
Belgian troops, surrounded by the German army. Dunkirk
Harbour had a long jetty, perfect for the big Navy boats to
come alongside, but also a perfect target for German aircraft
and they were soon put out of action. The tide at Dunkirk, like
Camber Sands, goes out over a mile. Men marched into the
sea, up to their chests and stood in a queue, walking in and
out with the tide, waiting to be saved by the little ships, which
ferried them to the Navy boats laying offshore. It was a shuttle
service being operated 24 hours a day. The Cyril and Lillian
Bishop could carry 25 - 30 soldiers at a time with her Royal
Navy crew supervising and went back and forth for four days
and nights under fire from enemy aircraft. When she returned
to Hastings from Dunkirk, she was overhauled and repaired,
then went back to her role as a lifeboat until 1950. 66 years
passed, and she was converted to a fishing boat, then a
cabin sailer and sunk in a harbour in Scotland. We know she
was hit twice with two bullet holes in
her forward top box, a large hole in
her bow. Sand in her mast headlight
would suggest a capsize. Luckily Simon
Evans bought her for his collection of
22 lifeboats and started to renovate her.
Following various phone calls, Skinners
Sheds purchased her for the people
of Hastings, and she came home to
a hero’s welcome. Her renovation
was continued by local tradesmen and
volunteers, helped by local businesses. Now, at last, we
have the right to call her a Dunkirk Little Ship, which gives
us exclusive rights to proudly raise and fly the flag, which
confirms her status, recognised by the Association of Dunkirk
Little Ships - a wartime hero of Operation Dynamo.”
You can visit the Cyril and Lillian Bishop at the junction of
Harold Road and Old London Road in Hastings.
Welcome to our "Grandparents & Guardians" Family section
W
Well look at this, I've
been miniaturised!
Yes readers, due to
the magazine being
packed with exciting events and
information, I've been given
instructions to produce a Bonsaicolumn
for this issue. I don't get
to read the rest of Golden Times before I write my
column, so what on earth they've found that's more
interesting than me is anyone's guess.
It is undeniably a busy time of year, when spring
starts to, well, spring. It has to be said though that
as I write this, it's currently cold enough to make a
polar bear put some woolly socks on. By the time
you're reading this however, our parks and gardens
should be colourful again with daffodils and croci,
and the bluebells will just be starting to appear.
So, no excuses for being cooped up indoors during
the Easter holidays, just over the page we have a
selection of family-themed goings-on to inspire you!
Writing such a short column leaves me extra time
to hide eggs and elaborately decorate an Easter
bonnet with my little ones. See you in May - Tricia
DO YOUR CLOTHES SPARK JOY?
by Michele Duke
Spring is on its way, and it's
time for a bit of seasonal
cleaning. I'm not suggesting
you get out the marigolds – that
can wait for another day – but
this month we're cleaning out
the most important cupboard
in the house. That's right, your
wardrobe. Or is it wardrobes,
plural? Or is it wardrobes plus the
airing cupboard and the closet in
the spare room? Just how many
clothes do you have in your house?
Most of us wear only 20% of what
we own, and we haven't even seen
over 50% of our clothes for over a
year. Our cupboards are bursting
with unloved, unworn items that
are clogging up our lives. Now
is the time to take action. Just
imagine how lovely it would be
to have your clothes organised,
easy to access, and ready to wear.
Every item something you enjoy
wearing and you know makes
you look fabulous. Let me tell you
about my new best friend.
Marie Kondo is a Japanese
organising phenomenon. She
is all over the press and TV
with her tidying and organising
methodology nicknamed the
KonMari method. There are
Youtube videos, books and
courses. Who would have thought
you could make a fortune by
showing people how to tidy their
houses? So how does it work?
Let's take your wardrobe as an
example. You take every single
item of clothing you own and pile
it all up on the bedroom floor. Then
starting with your tops, you take
each item in
your hands and
ask yourself
"does this spark
joy?" If the
answer is yes,
you keep it. If
not you toss it.
And you work
through each
type of clothing
until you have a
pile of clothes
you love and a
pile of clothes
you don't
love. It sounds
too simple to
be effective
but, trust
me, it works.
I discarded
around a
third of my
wardrobe,
much of it
hardly worn.
The charity
shops in St
Leonards will
be heaving with
my
clothes.
Hopefully,
unloved
someone will rehouse them and
give them the love they deserve.
And that's the point. They didn't
give me any joy so removing them
from my life allows me to focus on
the things that do.
The next stage is to organise your
loved possessions in a way that
you can access them easily. Marie
insists that folding is the most
practical way to store clothing,
and, here's the most radical thing,
placing them vertically in your
drawer. It's hard to describe hold
to fold them correctly, so I suggest
you check it out on the internet
or get a book, but I promise you,
she's right. Not only are my tops,
trousers and underwear easy to
find, but they also emerge without
a crease. I hang only those items
it's impractical to fold – flimsy
tops and dresses, bulky coats
and jackets. I have more space,
and I've rediscovered outfits I'd
forgotten. Getting dressed in the
morning is a doddle. And, because
everything has a designated space,
it's easy to keep tidy.
The method works for everything
in your house, garden, and office.
So if like me, you want more order
in your life, I highly recommend
this little book.
Following a great FAT Tuesday FestivAL during
February - the live music scene around here starts to
heat up some more (with the weather) I hope!
First gig of March worth seeing will be the debut of new
band SOUL TOWN - March 2nd at The Jenny Lind! A
great mix of Soul and Motown from a big 7 piece band.
One for the aging hippies out there: on March 10th
the Albion, George Street, Hastings will be presenting
THE MAGIC BUS, best described as "a love-in of late
60's early 70's Canterbury scene and U.S west coast
hippie”.
One of my favourite blues bands THE BIG BLUE return
Sea Angling Association opposite Hastings Lifeboat
Station is putting on The BLUES BROTHERS - SOUL
SISTERS SHOW....2 hours of non-stop Soul and Blues
Bro classics - Saturday 17th March.
Some of you may know we have a new theatre in
Hastings - The Opus (Just opposite ESK). Opened by
our very own celebrity composer Polo Piatti. It’s a brave
new venture and deserves support, hoping to engage
audiences with great music, theatre, literature, dance
and the visual arts. On Saturday March 10th there is
a unique opportunity to see Chris Beaumontone
of the UK’s greatest young percussionists in concert,
accompanied on the piano by Derek Garden. Tickets
are £12 (£13 on the door) and children under 16 are
free. Available from Hastings Information Centre in
Sunday April 8th we have the annual event for Beatle
people...BEATLES DAY - the 19th year - the big gig that
gives every penny of it’s profit to Macmillan Cancer
Support. This year they will be celebrating 50 years of
The White Album at The White Rock Theatre in Hastings
from 12 noon till 10.30pm, featuring 90 acts with at
least 500 performers on three stages - for a ticket price
of only £15 (Children 5 to 14 years old: £7.50) it’s a must
for Beatle fans and anyone who appreciates superb live
music.
This event is a huge feat or organisation, spearheaded
by local musician Pete Presscot with help from a
whole host of musicians, volunteers and generous
sponsors. There’s also going to be a special auction
this year in conjunction with Burstow and Hewitt that
features lots sent in by many celebrities. Causing a
lot of interest is a house of commons bottle of whisky
signed by the prime minister. I will be donating a
signed, special-edition Beatles cartoon print drawn
when I worked for them between ‘64 and ‘68.
That will take place in the White Rock Hotel at 5.00pm.
Not to be missed.
There’s a lot coming up during the year so look out for
my column next issue when I can reveal some of the
acts I’ve booked for The Winkle Club Jazz and Blues
Fest in June, The Mid-Summer Fish Fest in June, The
Nearly on the Beach concert in July and The Seafood
and Wine Festival in September.
Exciting times...Golden times!
It's a dog's life, by Lottie "Our Golden Girl"
Hello humans, it's me again, Lottie, the
dog. The humans that look after me
here at Golden Times are so demanding;
they insist I write a regular column in
the magazine. Seems like an awful lot of work for
a busy dog, but I will give it a go. I just hope they
don't blame me if things don't get chewed, licked,
buried or sniffed because I'm too busy doing this...
Life is good in general; I'm often out in the
garden barking at other dogs, cats, foxes,
squirrels, pigeons, seagulls, and once, to my
embarrassment, a slightly dodgy looking leaf. In
my defence, the wind was whipping it about a bit,
and I was convinced it was alive. All my barking
has paid off, however, as none of my family has
been attacked by a pigeon.
There was a lot of fuss here recently when I
ate some chocolate. It was hidden, but not as
well as someone thought. I wasn't to know, but
apparently, it's really, really bad for dogs. As
it's something called "Easter" soon, and there's
lots of chocolate about, do remember to keep it
out of the way of any dogs who might be a bit
hungry or inquisitive. I'm fine now, but a lot of
fuss was made, and I had to go somewhere called
"Vets4pets Hastings". I met a man who was very
interested in me and gave me something called
medicine. I was quite spectacularly sick, and this
lead to me having an extra bath, which was awful.
I don't like baths; I'm very proud of my canine
pong thank you very much! Anyway, thanks to
the vet human, I am now back to my mischevious
best. As you can see from the picture here, I have
had a bit of a haircut, thanks to Parkside Parlour,
Hastings I don't like haircuts any more than I like
baths, but it is a bit easier to see things now than
it was a few weeks ago.
It's been really cold outside for most of my life,
but apparently, that's about to change as it will
be springtime soon. I'm only eight months old,
so I've never seen springtime. It's supposed to be
great, with lots of things to chase and bark at, but
there are also some things that dogs need to be
wary of. Some "flowers" (whatever they are) can
make me ill, such as crocuses, azaleas, bleeding
heart (Dicentra), box, bluebells, broom, cyclamen,
daffodils, dieffenbachia, hyacinth bulbs, mistletoe,
yew, onions and rhubarb. Blimey! There's also
something called a "compost heap" that I'm
supposed to keep away from.
I think that's about enough from me now; I'm off
to sleep for a few hours as I am exhausted with all
these words. See you in May - Lottie
