Message from the Mayor 

On behalf of the Council and the staff of the 

Township of Selwyn, it is my pleasure to 

provide you with the 2018 Services Guide. 

The Guide is a useful resource for various 

municipal services and provides an array of 

information on exciting programs and events 

in our Township. 

New in 2018, is the addition of the Selwyn 

Skateboard Park, Ultimate Frisbee Fields in 

Bridgenorth, the Ennismore Fitness Trail and 

the Woodland Acres Park.

2018 Election - October 22 

For the first time, the Township will offer internet and 

telephone voting! Eligible voters will receive a 

personalized voting instruction package well before 

Election Day with details on how to vote online or by 

phone. Electronic voting stations will also be 

available at the Municipal office during the voting 

period for public use. Information such as candidate 

guides, voting “how-to” videos, voter list look-up and 

much more will be available on the Township 

website. 

Key Dates: 

Nomination Period: Those thinking of a future career in 

municipal politics can file nomination papers from May 1, 

2018 to July 27, 2018 until 2 pm. 

Voting Period: Electors may cast their vote from October 

9th, 2018 – October 22nd, 2018 until 8 pm. 

Election Day: October 22nd, 2018 

Financial Services 

Property Tax Bill 

Interim tax bills are mailed in January and final tax 

bills in June. If you are moving or have changed your 

mailing address please contact us immediately. 

2018 Tax Installment Dates:

How to pay your property tax bill:

Building and Planning 

The Building and Planning Department provides a 

wide range of services that pertain to land use and 

the enforcement of the Ontario Building Code. 

Who needs a building permit? 

Permits are required for any significant change to a 

home or property including: 

Ÿ home additions 

Ÿ pools 

Ÿ open decks and porches 

Ÿ new or replacement of solid fuel heating systems 

Ÿ event tents greater than 642 sq ft. 

Permits are also required to demolish a building or 

structure. 

What projects DO NOT require a building permit? 

Ÿ Accessory building with a total floor area of 10 

square meters (108 sq. ft.) or less (must comply 

with zoning) 

Ÿ Fences – requirements within the Fence By-law 

must be met 

Ÿ Replacement of windows or doors provided the 

size does not change 

Why should I get a permit? 

Permits provide you with the assurance that the 

municipality has reviewed your plans, and that your 

project complies with the Ontario Building Code, 

local Zoning By-laws and other applicable laws and 

regulations. 

How do I obtain a building permit? 

We recommend that you review our Permit 

Information Package online before attending our 

office for a permit. This will provide you with details 

on the process and requirements.

Burn Permits 

All open air burning within the Township requires a 

Burn Permit that can be obtained at the Ward St. Fire 

Department in Bridgenorth. No burn barrels allowed 

in Selwyn. 

Smoke & carbon monoxide alarms can be purchased 

at both the Township Office and the Ward Street Fire 

Hall.

2018 Recycling Schedule 

Selwyn Township Recycling is collected on Tuesday 

with the exception of Bridgenorth which is collected 

on Friday.

Bridgenorth Curbside 

Organics 

Free collection of organic material is available in the 

village of Bridgenorth. Put out the green bin every 

Friday morning with your blue box for collection.

Recycling Electronics 

There is a WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic 

Equipment) bin located at the Selwyn Township 

Landfill Site. Remember to clear your drives to 

protect your privacy. 

A short list of acceptable materials is: 

þ Computers including all peripherals and cords 

þ Computer tablets, laptops 

þ All types of phones (corded, cordless, mobile) 

þ Answering machines, pagers, pda's 

þ Radios, speakers, turntables 

þ TV's, VCR's, DVD players, blue ray, and cords 

(no tapes, cd's, dvd's) 

þ Cameras (digital, manual, video) 

þ Gaming devices and accessories (no game 

cartridges) 

ý No gasoline powered items are 

permitted in the bin. 

ý No Freon products 

i.e. dehumidifier/water coolers 

Please remember to remove any information 

from drives, etc. prior to dropping off your materials. 

If you have Recycling Collection/Pick Up concerns, 

please contact Progressive Waste at 705-742-4268.

Garbage 

Hazardous Waste (MHSW) 

M & M Disposals is contracted by the Township; any 

questions related to waste collection can be directed 

to 705-652-3505. 

Garbage will be collected every holiday except for 

Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Boxing Day. 

Remember: 

• Garbage must be out for pick up by 7:00 am 

• Each household is allowed two (2) containers 

/bags & each commercial establishments are 

allowed four (4) containers/ bags 

• No container/bag shall weigh more than 30 lbs. 

Landfill 

Address: 1480 County Road 18, Selwyn ON 

Residents must present their Landfill Site Pass to the 

attendant. Passes are provided to ratepayers in their 

first tax billing package. Replacement Landfill Site 

Passes may be obtained from the Township office 

for $10.00.

Peterborough Waste Management Facility located at 

1260 Bensfort Rd., Peterborough. 

Mattresses and Box Springs are not accepted for 

disposal at the Smith Landfill Site. Please take them 

to the Bensfort Road Landfill Site in Peterborough, 

located at 1260 Bensfort Road. There is a fee per

in the garbage or blue box, as it contains toxins that

Selwyn Trails 

B.E.L. Rotary Bridgenorth Trail

Brumwell Street, Bridgenorth and 5 Line Selwyn 

The accessible trail is approximately 2.3 km long and runs from Brumwell Street to 5th Line. The trail is lined with 

native trees and boasts a peaceful and tranquil setting amidst the Miller Creek Wetland. There are benches located 

along the trail that provide a comfortable resting spot. The trail heads feature parking and a large trail map 

identifying local points of interest. 

Ennismore Heritage Trail 

1053 Ennis Road, Ennismore (Ennismore Waterfront Park) 

The naturalized trail is located in Ennismore Waterfront Park which is made up of 3 loops that total approximately 

1.5 km. Interpretive signage guides you through a variety of natural settings and points of interest. Features include 

two boardwalks, an osprey viewing platform, and an interior picnic area with pavilion. 

Ennismore Fitness Trail 

553 Ennis Road, Ennismore (behind the Ennismore Community Centre) 

Located at the Robert E. Young Recreation Complex, the outdoor fitness trail features 1,150 metres of trail and five 

fitness stations, making it suitable for many ages and abilities. Access to the outdoor fitness trail is available at no 

charge and promotes healthy active living. Located next to the new fitness trail, is a new play structure and a shade 

shelter, making the complex a fabulous community hub with something for all ages to enjoy! 

Lakefield Trail - www.lakefieldtrail.ca 

Located throughout the village of Lakefield. 

The scenic trail network encompasses both the natural setting and heritage of the Village. You may enter or leave the 

trail system from several access points. Covering over 8.5 km, the accessible trail is ideal for walking, jogging or 

cycling. There are benches and shade shelters located along the trail that provide comfortable resting spots. The 

Lakefield Trail Committee offers a variety of programs to contribute to the trail, including the friends program, tree 

program and bench program. If you would like to donate to the trail, plant a tree or purchase a memorial bench please 

contact the Township office at 705-292-9507.

Municipal Election - October 22, 2018 

For the first time, the Township of Selwyn will offer internet 

and telephone voting! Eligible electors will be able to vote 

from a mobile device, computer, telephone, cell phone, 

iPad, or laptop. Internet/telephone voting allows electors, 

to vote anytime, anywhere! 

Voting will be open from October 9, 2018 to 

October 22, 2018 until 8 PM. 

Eligible voters will receive a personalized 

voting instruction package well before 

Election Day (October 22, 2018) 

with details on how to vote. 

Electronic voting stations will also 

be available at the Municipal office 

during the voting period for public use. 

Who can vote in the Municipal Election? 

A person is entitled to vote if, on voting day, he or she: 

a) resides in the local municipality or is the owner 

or tenant of land there, or the spouse of such 

owner or tenant; 

b) is a Canadian citizen; and 

c) is at least 18 years old 

d) is not prohibited from voting under subsection 

(3) or otherwise by law. 

Eligibility is determined by a person's relationship to 

property, specifically ownership and / or occupancy. In 

other words, a person is entitled to one municipal vote in 

every municipality and school board jurisdiction in which 

they own or occupy property.
