Message from the Mayor<br />
On behalf of the Council and the staff of the<br />
Township of <strong>Selwyn</strong>, it is my pleasure to<br />
provide you with the <strong>2018</strong> Services <strong>Guide</strong>.<br />
The <strong>Guide</strong> is a useful resource for various<br />
municipal services and provides an array of<br />
information on exciting programs and events<br />
in our Township.<br />
New in <strong>2018</strong>, is the addition of the <strong>Selwyn</strong><br />
Skateboard Park, Ultimate Frisbee Fields in<br />
Bridgenorth, the Ennismore Fitness Trail and<br />
the Woodland Acres Park.<br />

<strong>2018</strong> Election - October 22<br />
For the first time, the Township will offer internet and<br />
telephone voting! Eligible voters will receive a<br />
personalized voting instruction package well before<br />
Election Day with details on how to vote online or by<br />
phone. Electronic voting stations will also be<br />
available at the Municipal office during the voting<br />
period for public use. Information such as candidate<br />
guides, voting “how-to” videos, voter list look-up and<br />
much more will be available on the Township<br />
website.<br />
Key Dates:<br />
Nomination Period: Those thinking of a future career in<br />
municipal politics can file nomination papers from May 1,<br />
<strong>2018</strong> to July 27, <strong>2018</strong> until 2 pm.<br />
Voting Period: Electors may cast their vote from October<br />
9th, <strong>2018</strong> – October 22nd, <strong>2018</strong> until 8 pm.<br />
Election Day: October 22nd, <strong>2018</strong><br />

Property Tax Bill<br />
Interim tax bills are mailed in January and final tax<br />
bills in June. If you are moving or have changed your<br />
mailing address please contact us immediately.<br />

Building and Planning<br />
The Building and Planning Department provides a<br />
wide range of services that pertain to land use and<br />
the enforcement of the Ontario Building Code.<br />
Who needs a building permit?<br />
Permits are required for any significant change to a<br />
home or property including:<br />
Ÿ home additions<br />
Ÿ pools<br />
Ÿ open decks and porches<br />
Ÿ new or replacement of solid fuel heating systems<br />
Ÿ event tents greater than 642 sq ft.<br />
Permits are also required to demolish a building or<br />
structure.<br />
What projects DO NOT require a building permit?<br />
Ÿ Accessory building with a total floor area of 10<br />
square meters (108 sq. ft.) or less (must comply<br />
with zoning)<br />
Ÿ Fences – requirements within the Fence By-law<br />
must be met<br />
Ÿ Replacement of windows or doors provided the<br />
size does not change<br />
Why should I get a permit?<br />
Permits provide you with the assurance that the<br />
municipality has reviewed your plans, and that your<br />
project complies with the Ontario Building Code,<br />
local Zoning By-laws and other applicable laws and<br />
regulations.<br />
How do I obtain a building permit?<br />
We recommend that you review our Permit<br />
Information Package online before attending our<br />
office for a permit. This will provide you with details<br />
on the process and requirements.<br />

Burn Permits<br />
All open air burning within the Township requires a<br />
Burn Permit that can be obtained at the Ward St. Fire<br />
Department in Bridgenorth. No burn barrels allowed<br />
in <strong>Selwyn</strong>.<br />
Smoke & carbon monoxide alarms can be purchased<br />
at both the Township Office and the Ward Street Fire<br />
Hall.<br />

<strong>2018</strong> Recycling Schedule<br />
<strong>Selwyn</strong> Township Recycling is collected on Tuesday<br />
with the exception of Bridgenorth which is collected<br />
on Friday.<br />

Free collection of organic material is available in the<br />
village of Bridgenorth. Put out the green bin every<br />
Friday morning with your blue box for collection.<br />

There is a WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic<br />
Equipment) bin located at the <strong>Selwyn</strong> Township<br />
Landfill Site. Remember to clear your drives to<br />
protect your privacy.<br />

þ Computer tablets, laptops<br />
þ All types of phones (corded, cordless, mobile)<br />
þ Answering machines, pagers, pda's<br />
þ Radios, speakers, turntables<br />
þ TV's, VCR's, DVD players, blue ray, and cords<br />
(no tapes, cd's, dvd's)<br />
þ Cameras (digital, manual, video)<br />
þ Gaming devices and accessories (no game<br />
cartridges)<br />
ý No gasoline powered items are<br />
permitted in the bin.<br />

from drives, etc. prior to dropping off your materials.<br />

Garbage<br />
Hazardous Waste (MHSW)<br />
M & M Disposals is contracted by the Township; any<br />
questions related to waste collection can be directed<br />
to 705-652-3505.<br />
Garbage will be collected every holiday except for<br />
Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Boxing Day.<br />
Remember:<br />
• Garbage must be out for pick up by 7:00 am<br />
• Each household is allowed two (2) containers<br />
/bags & each commercial establishments are<br />
allowed four (4) containers/ bags<br />
• No container/bag shall weigh more than 30 lbs.<br />
Landfill<br />
Address: 1480 County Road 18, <strong>Selwyn</strong> ON<br />
Residents must present their Landfill Site Pass to the<br />
attendant. Passes are provided to ratepayers in their<br />
first tax billing package. Replacement Landfill Site<br />
Passes may be obtained from the Township office<br />
for $10.00.<br />

Mattresses and Box Springs are not accepted for<br />
disposal at the Smith Landfill Site. Please take them<br />
to the Bensfort Road Landfill Site in Peterborough,<br />
located at 1260 Bensfort Road. There is a fee per<br />

Located at the Robert E. Young Recreation Complex, the outdoor fitness trail features 1,150 metres of trail and five<br />
fitness stations, making it suitable for many ages and abilities. Access to the outdoor fitness trail is available at no<br />
charge and promotes healthy active living. Located next to the new fitness trail, is a new play structure and a shade<br />
shelter, making the complex a fabulous community hub with something for all ages to enjoy!<br />

The scenic trail network encompasses both the natural setting and heritage of the Village. You may enter or leave the<br />
trail system from several access points. Covering over 8.5 km, the accessible trail is ideal for walking, jogging or<br />
cycling. There are benches and shade shelters located along the trail that provide comfortable resting spots. The<br />
Lakefield Trail Committee offers a variety of programs to contribute to the trail, including the friends program, tree<br />
program and bench program. If you would like to donate to the trail, plant a tree or purchase a memorial bench please<br />

For the first time, the Township of <strong>Selwyn</strong> will offer internet<br />
and telephone voting! Eligible electors will be able to vote<br />
from a mobile device, computer, telephone, cell phone,<br />
iPad, or laptop. Internet/telephone voting allows electors,<br />
to vote anytime, anywhere!<br />
Voting will be open from October 9, <strong>2018</strong> to<br />
October 22, <strong>2018</strong> until 8 PM.<br />
