Raising the bar to a new level In appreciation of former Mayor Tom Chavez By Jerry Jambazian Mayor Tom Chavez became Councilmember Tom Chavez at the City Council reorganization meeting of March 20. Vincent Yu was chosen Mayor and Cynthia Sternquist as Mayor Pro Tem. Councilmembers Carl Blum, Fernando Vizcarra, Mrs. Sternquist and Mr. Yu heaped praises upon the professional nature of the former mayor’s tenure saying, “You have left some big shoes to fill.” Mayor Chavez was elected by his fellow council members on March 21, 2011. He had an extraordinary year representing the city to the world. Perhaps of greater interest to members is that the Chamber won a new XBox 360 with Kinect (250 GB) that will be an awesome raffle prize at an upcoming Chamber event (hint: Fourth of July), so make sure to pay attention to the Constant Contact e-mail blasts and future issues of Temple City Life for the opportunity to take home the spoils from the Chamber’s victory. Mayor Vincent Yu takes gavel Cynthia Sternquist named Mayor Pro Tem Temple City council members unanimously appointed Vincent Yu as Temple City’s Mayor on Tuesday, March 20. Mr. Yu was elected in 2009 and served as Mayor Pro Tem this past year. Councilmember Cynthia Sternquist was also unanimously appointed as Mayor Pro Tempore. Mrs. Sternquist also joined the Council in 2009, filling a vacancy precipitated by a resignation. She previously served for nearly two decades on the Parks and Recreation Commission. Since 2010, Mr. Yu and Mrs. Sternquist, along with their council colleagues, have been on course to transition City Hall into a high-performance organization. As Mayor Yu takes on his new leadership role for the coming year, he hopes to take operations from “good” to “great” by elevating the city’s level of service to Mayor Tom Chavez the community. He also recognizes he has big shoes to fill, as outgoing Mayor Tom Chavez made extra effort in maintaining visibility in the community. During his term, Mr. Chavez accomplished key goals to ensure that the city was steering in the right direction. Under his leadership, the council moved forward with the transformational Rosemead Boulevard Enhancement Project; enacted a new code of ethics to improve City Hall transparency; and introduced the new Citizen’s Academy program. safety and well-being <strong>of</strong> residents. As television<br />

crews came <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> city, Mayor Chavez was <strong>the</strong><br />

spokesperson that gave calm assurance <strong>to</strong> our city,<br />

county, state, and nation that everything was going<br />

<strong>to</strong> be all right.<br />

Mayor Chavez represented <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>City</strong> on <strong>the</strong><br />

panel at <strong>the</strong> Jan. 12 public hearings called for by<br />

Congressman Adam Schiff and meeting at <strong>the</strong> 9th<br />

Circuit Court <strong>of</strong> Appeal in Pasadena.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> California Public Utilities Commission<br />

meeting here in <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>City</strong> on Jan. 26, <strong>the</strong> mayor<br />

was <strong>the</strong> only elected <strong>of</strong>ficial from <strong>the</strong> cities represented<br />

<strong>to</strong> stay <strong>the</strong> entire five hours <strong>of</strong> discussion<br />

regarding Sou<strong>the</strong>rn California Edison’s winds<strong>to</strong>rm<br />

In November <strong>of</strong> 2010 <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong> Council adopted<br />

pro<strong>to</strong>cols that set higher standards <strong>of</strong> conduct for<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong> commissioners. These pro<strong>to</strong>cols<br />

established rules for fair, open and ethical<br />

government that exceeds standards required by<br />

California law. An at<strong>to</strong>rney by pr<strong>of</strong>ession, Mr.<br />

Chavez teaches ethics at Pasadena <strong>City</strong> College <strong>to</strong><br />

aspiring at<strong>to</strong>rneys. Also, twice a week, he was<br />

present at Mayor’s Office Hours at <strong>City</strong> Hall <strong>to</strong><br />

hear concerns from citizens who were unable <strong>to</strong><br />

attend a council meeting or were <strong>to</strong>o shy <strong>to</strong> express<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves in a public setting.<br />

As <strong>of</strong> this writing, Mr. Chavez is traveling <strong>to</strong><br />

our Sister <strong>City</strong> in Hawkesbury, Australia, again<br />

representing this city very well, 8,500 miles away.<br />

Congratulations, former Mayor Tom for your<br />

selfless service <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> citizens <strong>of</strong> <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>City</strong> and<br />

thank you for a job well done.<br />

time as Mayor because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>City</strong>’s<br />

hardworking staff and its involved residents,”<br />

said Mr. Chavez. “I could not have<br />

done it without <strong>the</strong> community’s support<br />

and I can’t thank everyone enough.”<br />

Looking ahead, Mayor Yu, employed<br />

as an architect with L.A. County, is ready<br />

and excited <strong>to</strong> serve as Mayor.<br />

He said he hopes <strong>to</strong> actively expand<br />

<strong>the</strong> community’s already impressive <strong>level</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> civic engagement.<br />

“Progress isn’t measured merely by<br />

projects, but how we treat our citizens,”<br />

said Mr. Yu, who sees public involvement<br />

being just as important as economic development.<br />

Agreeing, Mrs. Sternquist also acknowledges<br />

public engagement, currently at a 20year<br />

high. “Things are turning around<br />

and I want <strong>to</strong> continue that momentum,”<br />

she said.<br />

In addition <strong>to</strong> community harmony,<br />

many credit <strong>the</strong> council’s cohesiveness<br />

for driving progress on such <strong>City</strong><br />

projects as <strong>the</strong> upcoming Rosemead<br />

project and Gateway development.<br />

“We work well <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r as a team,”<br />

said Mrs. Sternquist.<br />

<strong>Temple</strong> Station will host a golf <strong>to</strong>urnament<br />

May 21 <strong>to</strong> raise funds for both Special Olympics<br />

and <strong>Temple</strong> Station’s sporting events/groups.<br />

Deputies are seeking corporate and business<br />

sponsors for <strong>the</strong> event in <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r a financial<br />

donation or a gift for <strong>the</strong> raffle.<br />

Half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> proceeds from <strong>the</strong> golf <strong>to</strong>urnament<br />

will benefit Special Olympics Sou<strong>the</strong>rn California<br />

(SOSC), which serves approximately 11,000<br />

athletes.<br />

Law enforcement is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nation’s largest<br />

supporters <strong>of</strong> Special Olympics. The mission <strong>of</strong><br />

Special Olympics is <strong>to</strong> provide year-round sports<br />

training and athletic competition for children and<br />

adults with intellectual disabilities.<br />

The competitions provide <strong>the</strong>m with lifechanging<br />

opportunities <strong>to</strong> develop physical fitness,<br />

demonstrate courage, experience joy and<br />

participate in a sharing <strong>of</strong> gifts, skills and friend-<br />

anniversary with annual fish fry May 5<br />

<strong>Temple</strong> <strong>City</strong> Sportsmen, a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

501(c)4 organization, has announced its<br />

annual fish fry, a fund-raising event <strong>to</strong><br />

introduce <strong>the</strong> youth <strong>of</strong> California <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

wonders <strong>of</strong> outdoor recreation and conservation.<br />

Funds are used <strong>to</strong> teach children how<br />

<strong>to</strong> fish and <strong>to</strong> support o<strong>the</strong>r non-pr<strong>of</strong>its<br />

such as <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn California Quail<br />

Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, California<br />

Deer Association and o<strong>the</strong>r causes.<br />

<strong>Temple</strong> <strong>City</strong> Sportsmen also contributes<br />

money and volunteers manpower<br />

for conservation projects within <strong>the</strong><br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>rn California area.<br />
