hand at the twice-daily meetings that the

councilmembers’ foremost concern was for the

safety and well-being of residents. As television

crews came to the city, Mayor Chavez was the

spokesperson that gave calm assurance to our city,

county, state, and nation that everything was going

to be all right.

Mayor Chavez represented Temple City on the

panel at the Jan. 12 public hearings called for by

Congressman Adam Schiff and meeting at the 9th

Circuit Court of Appeal in Pasadena.

At the California Public Utilities Commission

meeting here in Temple City on Jan. 26, the mayor

was the only elected official from the cities represented

to stay the entire five hours of discussion

regarding Southern California Edison’s windstorm

response.

In November of 2010 the City Council adopted

protocols that set higher standards of conduct for

themselves and the commissioners. These protocols

established rules for fair, open and ethical

government that exceeds standards required by

California law. An attorney by profession, Mr.

Chavez teaches ethics at Pasadena City College to

aspiring attorneys. Also, twice a week, he was

present at Mayor’s Office Hours at City Hall to

hear concerns from citizens who were unable to

attend a council meeting or were too shy to express

themselves in a public setting.

As of this writing, Mr. Chavez is traveling to

our Sister City in Hawkesbury, Australia, again

representing this city very well, 8,500 miles away.

Congratulations, former Mayor Tom for your

selfless service to the citizens of Temple City and

thank you for a job well done.

time as Mayor because of the City’s

hardworking staff and its involved residents,”

said Mr. Chavez. “I could not have

done it without the community’s support

and I can’t thank everyone enough.”

Looking ahead, Mayor Yu, employed

as an architect with L.A. County, is ready

and excited to serve as Mayor.

He said he hopes to actively expand

the community’s already impressive level

of civic engagement.

“Progress isn’t measured merely by

projects, but how we treat our citizens,”

said Mr. Yu, who sees public involvement

being just as important as economic development.

the importance of promoting

public engagement, currently at a 20year

high. “Things are turning around

and I want to continue that momentum,”

In addition to community harmony,

many credit the council’s cohesiveness

for driving progress on such City

projects as the upcoming Rosemead

project and Gateway development.

“We work well together as a team,”

said Mrs. Sternquist.

“Vince (Mayor Yu) can be sure he will

to welcome new businesses and members

to Temple City. The Chamber will deliver Welcome

Baskets containing brochures and flyers as

well as promotional/discount items from our

member businesses and organizations. This will

be win-win for both new and existing members

as it welcomes new businesses to Temple City and

the Chamber while marketing current member

services to our new neighbors. This new program

continues the Chamber’s renewed focus on growing

and developing our business community.

Members are also reminded that another benefit

of Chamber membership is displaying your

flyers and business cards in the Chamber office.

so the Chamber can insert them in the welcome

Temple Station seeks Sponsors for Golf Tournament

Temple Station will host a golf tournament

May 21 to raise funds for both Special Olympics

and Temple Station’s sporting events/groups.

Deputies are seeking corporate and business

sponsors for the event in the form of either a financial

donation or a gift for the raffle.

Half of the proceeds from the golf tournament

will benefit Special Olympics Southern California

(SOSC), which serves approximately 11,000

athletes.

Law enforcement is one of the nation’s largest

supporters of Special Olympics. The mission of

Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports

training and athletic competition for children and

adults with intellectual disabilities.

The competitions provide them with lifechanging

opportunities to develop physical fitness,

demonstrate courage, experience joy and

participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friend-

ship with their families, other Special Olympics

athletes and the community.

The balance of the proceeds will be used to

support the mission of the Temple Station Booster

Club and Temple Station athletic teams like the

annual Baker-to-Vegas Run, softball tournaments,

Booster Club, and more.

Temple City Sportsmen celebrates 50th

anniversary with annual fish fry May 5

Temple City Sportsmen, a non-profit

501(c)4 organization, has announced its

annual fish fry, a fund-raising event to

introduce the youth of California to the

wonders of outdoor recreation and conservation.

Funds are used to teach children how

to fish and to support other non-profits

such as the Southern California Quail

Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, California

Deer Association and other causes.

Temple City Sportsmen also contributes

money and volunteers manpower

for conservation projects within the

Southern California area.

Many members are also volunteer

teachers for the California Department

of Fish and Game Hunter Education

Program.

The cost of the dinner is $15 and includes

all-you-can-eat fried or baked

fish, cole slaw, potatoes au gratin, garlic

bread and dessert. There is no charge for

children under the age of 12. Door prizes

are included. The main raffle tickets are

also available for a chance to win one of

five great prizes.

The Temple City Unified School District

is accepting children into Kindergarten

for early admission on a case-bycase
