LIGHTS GUIDE 2018

INDEX
BBB Cycling is a specialist concerning lights. We develop the best lights for every
ride and the multiple awards we received in the field of design and functionality
prove we’re doing it right.
As we are cyclists ourselves we know what you need from a proper light. Whether
you’re a daily commuter or an adventurous mountainbiker who discovers new
trails at night, we have the right light for you.
In a world where more and more people are cycling, we not only need a light
to see, but it has to guarantee our safety as well. Therefore we developed the
all new Spy lights. With the latest technology this light sets new standards in
functionality and ensures safety due to a high visibility. It’s the ideal light for
every urban biker. Not in the least because of its size. The Spy is so small, you can
easily put it in every bag, purse or backpack you use on your daily commute or city
ride. Besides the demand of more safety, there’s also the need for high visibility
at the front.
With the Scope and Sniper lights we already provided lights with beams that
made cloudy nights turn into sunny daylight. The brightness and power of the
1500 lumen version of the Scope got worldwide attention in its introduction year
and instantly got rewarded with a MBR award. The most popular light among
road bikers, the Strike, got a boost as well. With 760 lumen this member of the
family will brighten the ride of every racer. The CenterBracket still offers more
options than ever to install your lights on your handlebar while the HelmetMount
is still your best option to put a Scope or Strike on your helmet. Our lights will
never let you down in the dark.
LIGHTS GUIDE

Why is one light better than the other? It’s a
frequently asked question and not so simple
to answer. But it’s definitely important to
know more about the technique behind lights,
to understand which light suits your needs the
best. Behind every light in our collection is
a long process of development which we like
to explain to you, to make the best possible
decision when buying one of our lights.
LIGHTS EXPLAINED
Sebastiaan Bowier “Lights and electronics look so simple, but it has so much more to offer.”
4

LUX AND LUMEN
One of the most heard arguments
when buying a new light is: “I want
the most lumen possible.” But what
does the amount of lumen actually say
about the power or the usability of a
light? Because, every manufacturer
can produce a light with an enormous
amount of lumen. What makes
the difference?
First we have to explain the difference
between two concepts: lux and lumen.
Lux is the amount of light on a certain
area. Most commonly, it is measured
on a distance of 1 or 10 meters. When
the amount of lux is measured, a brand
wants the highest level and with a
round bundle, that’s in the middle.
Lumen is the total amount of light (in
all directions) emitted by that lamp.
This can be produced by the LED or the
lamp itself. The level of lumen from the
lamp itself is lower, because the light
has passed the lens, resulting in loss
of light. This is the most honest value,
because this is the amount of light you
really see in front of your bike.
The light always has to pass the lens,
obviously.
That’s why BBB always measures the
amount of lumen of the light and not
of the LED alone. Because that’s not an
honest value on itself.
STRIKE 300
BLS-71
How does this look like in
real development life?
Let’s take a look at the Strike lights
in our range. When we developed the
Strike 300 and 500 we didn’t want to
just boost the amount of lumen.
We wanted to create two worthy lights
on their own. Below you can see the
differences between the Strike 300 and
Strike 500.
Both lights produce 28 lux on a distance
of 10 meters. So they are evenly
‘bright’.
But the Strike 500 has 200 lumen more
light compared to his little brother. The
Strike 500 has a broader bundle as well,
resulting in 200 lumen divided over a
bigger bundle.
Why didn’t we choose to use the same
lens for both lights? That’s because
the human eye adapts to light. When
there’s a lot of light, the pupil becomes
smaller. With less light, the pupil
becomes bigger.
With a narrow bundle that’s very bright,
the pupil becomes smaller, resulting
in everything outside of your bundle
becoming ‘invisible’. Because it’s
outside the reach of your small pupil.
A logic question now would be to ask if
every light than has to produce 28 lux
on a distance of 10 meters. But that’s
not the case.
STRIKE 500
BLS-72
The keyword in developing lights
is ‘balance’. As a designer of these
products you constantly have to keep
in mind that the light has to match the
needs of each user.
A helmet light has to create more of a
hotspot, while a light on your handlebar
has to have a wider bundle. And a
light used on the road has to be about
visibility. Each light has its own specific
needs and goals.
SHAPING THE BUNDLE
There are three ways to shape the
bundle of light. We can use the classic
reflector, a lens and a modern reflector.
Classic reflector
With a classic reflector there’s not so
much control over the light. Basically,
the LED directly shines to the outside,
only the light that shines to the sides
is being affected by the mirror. This
produces a lot of rings in the bundle
and a bright hotspot, also called the
‘center’. This type of reflection is
only used in the low end range of the
market.
Lens
The best way to create a round bundle
is to use a lens. The main advantage
of lenses is that all the light from a
LED can be controlled. This creates a
beautiful grading or an extremely bright
hotspot.
Modern reflector
When using a modern reflector, the LED
is horizontally placed, shining directly
on the mirror.
This way there’s maximum control over
the bundle. Mainly lights which are
StVZO approved has to be developed in
this way, because of the complex bundle
that has to be produced. The main
disadvantage is the loss of a lot of light
when using this type of reflector.
The Swat BLS-105K has a bundle right
in front of the wheel and one further
in front of the rider. The bundle in
the distance is broad and the amount
of light is as equally divided over the
bundle as possible.
This way we created a functional
bundle, but the amount of lumen and
lux is not comparable with a round
bundle.
On the next page is an example of the
Swat light.
BATTERIES
One last thing that’s very important
is the strength, brightness and lifetime
of a light is the type of battery being
used. We use two types of batteries
in our lights: lithium-ion polymer and
cylindric lithium ion.
Lithium-ion polymer
Lithium batteries without a solid
housing, but in a small aluminum
bag. This makes them compact and
lightweight. Easily produced in a certain
size, without any standard sizes. Those
type of batteries are being produced
with a specific product in mind. Very
vulnerable and have to be protected by
the housing of the light itself. Braking
or damaging the housing can lead to a
short circuit in the battery.
They get old less quickly, which means
they can be recharged more often.
There are batteries available with
higher capacity claims, but those type
of batteries are less stable, which can
lead to all sorts of problems. Short
battery lifetime, overload of circuit
or short circuit are a few examples of
those problems.
CAPACITY MANAGEMENT
A properly produced battery of a
known brand in a good light has a good
capacity management. Both light and
battery that is. In the software of the
lamp itself is programmed how the lamp
handles its capacity and light output.
Extreme examples are:
a. As much light as possible results
in a battery that empties fast
b. Low light output means you can use
the battery for a long time.
It looks like the following:
Some brands choose for maximum
values: an enormous amount of light
power in combination with a long life
time. But that’s only possible when
the light doesn’t produce a constant
amount of lumen. The power drops
fast during use. This is a renowned
marketing trick. The packaging says
2000 lumen, but in real life the output
of 2000 lumen is only for a very short
time.
After that, the amount of lumen is far
less than mentioned on the packaging,
for example only 1000 or even 500
lumen. This to maintain a bit of battery
lifetime.
At BBB we use a constant output.
This results in a slightly lower starting
point of lumen, but those amount of
lumen are constant over the complete
period of use. When the battery
indicator turns on, the light switches
to a ‘get-home-safe’ option, which is a
lower light output to safe battery life.
It depends on the purpose of the light
whether we choose for a high power
output and shorter battery life (MTB)
or a maximum of battery life and
slightly lower power output (Urban).
LIGHTS EXPLAINED
LIGHTS GUIDE
Cylindric lithium ion
Lithium batteries with a solid housing.
We use the 18650 cell, which is also
used in the famous Tesla Model S car.
This size is standardized and can’t
be produced in a certain size. The
advantage is that those batteries are
being produced on a lot of different
quality levels. We only use the best
brands available, Samsung and
Panasonic.
a.
When you don’t want to use the ‘gethome-safe’
option, you can switch one
light mode down. The battery indicator
turns off and you have a steady output
again.
Aside from which type of battery is
being used, the battery lifetime is as
equally important. Both Samsung and
Panasonic are stable batteries. This
means, the output is stable with a
minimum of highs and lows.
FEATURES LIGHTS
Regulated lights emit over their entire
burn time a constant amount of
light due to an electronic regulation
system. Is the battery (pack) empty,
can’t the same amount of light be
emitted anymore, than the light will
automatically turn off. Because you
don’t want to be surprised, these
lamps feature
a battery indicator.
By non-regulated lights, the
luminous intensity gradually
decreases. During use, these
lights will dim slowly.
Uses a high quality, internal or
external, lightweight Lithium ion
battery.
Uses the mentioned number of 1.5
V “AAA” replaceable or rechargeable
batteries.
Batteries included.
TECH SPECS
The CREE LED’s are one of the
world best light emitting diodes.
CREE semiconductor delivers high
quality, superior performance and
uses the newest LED manufacturing
technologies. These LED’s are
extremely powerful, energy sufficient
and last a long time.
Quick and easy rechargeable by
USB design.
Due to internal reflectors the LED
beam is focused in a predefined
beam pattern. This beam pattern
is optimized for the target use
of the light. For example a
wider beam for off road use or
a flattened oncoming traffic
friendly beam for road use.
Intensive lights also produce a lot of
heat. Therefore BBB high power lights
are equipped with ACS (Airflow Cooling
System ). Due to the special design of
the aluminum casing parts of the light
the air ow passing by while cycling is
cooling down the light. This guarantees
optimum heat control of the light. Using
an ACS controlled light, without riding
will damage the light.
Easy mounting, angle adjustable
silicone strap closed bracket. Fits on
handlebars, seat posts and frame
diameters between 22 till 32 mm.
Helmet bracket for lighting in
your line of sight at night trips.
Easy mounting, angle adjustable
bracket.
Is closed and tightened by an Allen
screw. Fits on both standard and
oversized handlebar diameters due
to it’s special design.
Centerbracket for centrating a
headlight at your handlebar.
Fixed bracket with quick release
system to remove the light.
Bracket fits most seat post
diameters.
Remote control for switching
light on/off and in various modes.
Waterresistant.
Bracket with a strap to secure
light at the seatpost or handlebar.
