After all those pizzas in just over a fortnight, Guido Grolle is now receiving unwanted Currywurst and sushi, German media report. The lawyer, in the western city of Dortmund, says he has been pestered by multiple calls about pizza orders. If stalking were proven, the sentence could be up to three years in jail. Ordering goods for someone by misusing their personal data is a form of harassment under German law. One theory is that the internet orders come from a disgruntled client. Other lawyers work at the same address as Mr Grolle. The new president is chosen by parliament, where the ANC, now led by Mr Ramaphosa, has an overwhelming majority. The ANC had told Mr Zuma to step down or face a vote of no-confidence in parliament. In a televised statement he said he was quitting with immediate effect but said he disagreed with the party's decision. Mr Zuma faces numerous corruption allegations but denies any wrongdoing. One opposition party, the Economic Freedom Fighters, has walked out of the parliamentary debate. It wants new elections, rather than the ANC deciding on the identity of the new president. It is often said that Mr Ramaphosa has had his eye on the position of president since the ANC came to power in 1994. The story goes that he was so upset at not having been chosen by •Cyril Ramaphosa, left, was the deputy President to Jacob Zuma Nelson Mandela as his successor that he left politics and went into business. But Mr Ramaphosa is now on the cusp of finally realising that dream. He has said his priority is reviving South Africa's battered economy. Low growth rates and dwindling investor confidence were compounded by two credit agencies downgrading the economy to junk status. BBC Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai dies aged 65 ZIMBABWE'S MAIN opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has died in South Africa, a senior official in his MDC party has said. Mr Tsvangirai, 65, a former prime minister, had reportedly been suffering from colon cancer. "He died this evening. The family communicated this to me," MDC vice president Elias Mudzuri told Reuters. Mr Tsvangirai's career was marked by a long political struggle against former President Robert Mugabe. He had been beaten and imprisoned numerous times. Announcing Mr Tsvangirai's death, Mr Mudzuri said on Twitter that the MDC had "lost our icon and fighter for democracy". Mr Tsvangirai founded the MDC (Movement for Democratic Change) in 2000, repeatedly challenging Mr Mugabe during the ex-president's long grip on power. No reason has yet been given for the decision. Mr Desalegn also stepped down as chairman of the country's ruling coalition. His departure comes amid months of anti-government protests in Ethiopia's largest regions, Oromia and Amhara. In the latest violence, 10 people were killed and dozens more injured following an opposition protest. The BBC's Emmanuel Igunza, in the capital Addis Ababa, says the government has released thousands of opposition supporters from jail in recent weeks, but still the protests continued. Ethiopia has witnessed repeated violent demonstrations since 2015, with protesters calling for political and economic reform, and an end to state corruption. The ongoing disturbances have led to deep divisions in the governing coalition, says Mary Harper, Africa Editor for the BBC World Service. Some of Ethiopia's powerful elites have come to see the prime minister as weak and lacking in direction, she says. A weak and turbulent Ethiopia is risky for the entire Horn of Africa, our correspondent adds, as this normally stable state is seen as key to holding the region together. BBC
WWW.DAILYHERITAGE.COM.GH DAILY HERITAGE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2018 HIV/AIDS statistics from K’dua worrying DESPITE EFFORTS by the Ghana Health Service and Ghana AIDS Commission to educate Ghanaians, particularly, the youth about the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS and preventive measures to stay safe, recent reports indicate that we appear to be losing the fight. Aside mother-to-child transmission, most of the statistics have focused on the voting age bracket of 18 years and above. They were said to be sexually active during the initial campaign against the disease. The trend is now very disquieting, in that students as young as 14 years are testing positive for HIV. That is clearly unacceptable. Reports from Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital indicates that HIV/AIDS was the second highest cause of death at the Koforidua Government Hospital in 2017. According to the hospital authorities, HIV/AIDS killed 139 people in 2017 compared to 134, recorded in 2016. The figures are indeed worrying. Due to the total misuse of social and new media, a lot of adolescents have become sexually active. In fact, some as young as nine and 10 are already mothers in some villages in the country. This calls for increased efforts to get to the new breed of young, but sexually active children to educate them about sex and its implications. We need to take advantage of the religious inclinations of these students in school to get them to stay away from sex until marriage. For the recalcitrant ones, we need to drum home preventive measures to avoid not just HIV/AIDS, but teenage pregnancies and their attendant illegal abortions. The family unit must also sit up and imbibe in the children good morals and sex education even at home. This way, we can together win the fight against the deadly HIV/AIDS by bringing the figures down drastically. No lawyer for Major Mahama ‘killers’ BY MUNTALLA INUSAH muntalla.inusah@dailyheritage.com.gh THERE WAS an instance crunch conference in the courtroom yesterday by the 14 accused persons standing trial for the murder of military officer Major Maxwell Adams Mahama over lawyers they need to represent them. In court yesterday, when they made their first appearance, some of them who had no legal representation were asked by the court to ensure that they engage counsel for the hearing to commence. Justice Mariama Owusu of the Criminal Division of the Accra High Court adjourned the case to March 5, 2018 and directed all parties to put their house in order for the jury to be empanelled. The accused persons were on January 11 this year charged with murder and the case was transferred to the High Court after their committal proceedings. Mrs Evelyn Keelson, a Chief State Attorney led a team of lawyers from the Attorney Generals Department, while Bernard Shaw, counsel for four of the accused persons, also held brief for the others. The Court Magistrate, His Worship Mr Ebenezer Kweku Ansah • The suspects in court said after the committal that per the evidence before the court, the accused persons had issues to answer. They are facing three charges including murder. The State would present 52 exhibits to the High Court and 15 witnesses. Who are they? The 14 accused persons expected to stand trial are William Baah, the assemblyman, Bernard Asamoah, Kofi Nyame, Akwasi Baah, Kwame Tuffuor, Joseph Appiah and Michael Annin. The rest are Bismark Donkor, John Bosie, Akwasi Asante, Charles Kwaning, Emmanuel Badu, Bismark Abanga and Kwadwo Nimah Evidence State prosecutors earlier presented 52 pieces of evidence to incriminate the accused persons, including a recorded video and pictures of crime scene. In the Bill of Indictment, there were enough evidence including pellets, empty cartridges, pictures from the crime scene, two guns, partly burnt shirt, a cell phone belonging to Major Maxwell Mahama, cement blocks, stick, metal bar, and stones among others against them. Mr Kweku-Ansah after perusing the evidence was convinced and committed the 14 accused persons to trial at the High Court. Accused persons to rely on Diaso Police Defense counsel, Mr George Bernard Shaw told the court at the last court day that though they had witnesses to call, they preferred to withhold the names and only bring them to court when the need arises. He, however, indicated to the court that, some police officers at Diaso would be part of the witnesses they intended to call in the course of the trial at the High Court. Explaining why his clients declined to comment when offered the opportunity by the court he said per the instructions he had received, they had nothing to do with the crime. “It is their right to comment or not on the prosecutions’ evidence...we have made known to the court that they do not agree with some of the things that the prosecutions are alleging,” Mr Shaw added. Background Then Capt. Maxwell Mahama of the 5 Battalion of Infantry was lynched while he was on his early morning jogging Monday, May 29, 2017. In a video shot of the incident and circulated on social media, the officer was seen surrendering his weapon before the mob carried out their dastardly act. The mob later claimed they mistook him for an armed robber because he carried a weapon. The fallen officer, whom many have described as decent and gentle, died on Monday, May 29, after he was beaten, stoned and burnt by residents of Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region. Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama was posthumously promoted to the rank of Major on June 5, by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo. Parliament in November 2017 approved a Bill that will make the spouse and children of Major Mahama the State’s responsibility. The Bill was in fulfillment of the President's promise to the family of Major Mahama.
