Death trap at Obom
BY PHILIP ANTOH
Philip.antoh@dailyheritage.com.gh
RESIDENTS OF
Obom, Kwasinyarko
and other
surrounding
communities in
the Ga South
Municipality of the Greater
Accra Region are living dangerously
following the nearcollapse
of the bridge on the
Adeiso River.
A major bridge that serves
as an access route linking
Nsawam and Obom to Kasoa
has witnessed five vehicles
falling into the river within a
space of two years.
The residents complained
that due to the bad nature of
the bridge they are unable to
transport their farm produce
to Nsawam and other markets.
In an interview with the
DAILY HERITAGE, the
Assemblyman for the Oduman
Asuaba Electoral area, Mr
Jacob Nii Moilai Allotey said
the problem had been there
since 2016 after a heavy downpour
washed away half of the
bridge.
He said last year, schools
around the Domiabra-Obom
•Cracks developed under the
the bridge. INSET: A tipper
truck which fell into the river
constituency lost textbooks
and other educational materials
when the vehicle belonging to
Write To Play, a non-governmental
organisation overturned
when the driver tried to
cross it to supply the materials
to the community.
“The situation is such that
all first time users of the road
risk the tendency of falling
into the river because there is
no warning sign or any indication
at the point to suggest the
bad nature of the bridge,” he
stated.
The Assemblyman said the
most recent accident
on the
bridge happened
on January 2,
2018 when a tipper
truck
full of sand fell
into the river injuring
the driver
and his mate
who are currently
receiving
treatment.
He revealed
that the residents
are apprehensive
because
the rains would soon set in.
He said upon many letters
written to the Ministry of
Roads and Highways, the Director
of Feeder Roads visited
the bridge and promised that
the government would act
promptly, but nothing has
since been done.
A visit by the DAILY
HERITAGE to Kwesinyarko
revealed that the bridge
on the Adeiso River may collapse
any time soon because
the whole structure had developed
cracks.
The iron rods used for the
construction were exposed
making it a death trap.
Motorists and road users
offload the content of their
vehicles before crossing the
bridge for fear that the weight
of the vehicle might cause the
collapse of the bridge.
Another
abandoned bridge
He said the construction of
a bridge on a 30 kilometer
stretch of road from Nsawam
to link Bawjiase, at Danso
which was started in 2006 during
President John Agyekum
Kufuor era, has been abandoned
with the metal bridge
gradually rusting.
