Cambridge Film Festival
Welcome to our 37th CFF.
Founded 40 years ago, the Festival began life at the old Arts Cinema, its home for 20 years,
and was relaunched – following a short break - at the current Arts Picturehouse in 2001. I am
privileged to have been involved for so long; many good friends have come and gone, and
several have passed away.
I dare say many would wonder at the radical changes that
have taken place: digital cinema, far from being the saviour of
‘specialised’ film, has in fact reduced the opportunity for smaller
films to gain any serious currency at the UK box office. Fewer and
fewer foreign language films now make any serious impact in
the UK.
Festival screenings may now be the only opportunity to see
many of the titles sourced by the Cambridge team. The digital
revolution has been a boon, but mainly for the big commercial
releases. Instead of being restricted to expensive 35mm prints,
cinemas now have terabytes of storage on their library facilities.
There is effectively no barring by distributors, so all cinemas can
concurrently play what appear to be the most bankable titles,
squeezing out more adventurous or challenging fare. While
new cinemas may open with large-scale funding or communitybased
resources, there are still few models of truly independent
programming. You may well have read this before – but the
message remains the same.
We have reduced the festival to a still rich feast of 100+ titles
over the 8 days. All venues are within minutes of one another:
from Emmanuel to Downing College, and from the Picturehouse
to Parker’s Piece, the location of the Moving Cinema. The
Picturehouse is, as always, your base to explore this panorama of
world cinema.
I am grateful to all the programmers who have viewed and
researched titles from the many submissions, as well as from
the Berlin, Cannes, Edinburgh, Sheffield and Cinema Ritrovato
(Bologna) festivals. Our long established relationships with
international agents and distributors ensure that Cambridge is
well served. Despite the generosity of our major funders, without
which there would be no Festival, we operate, as ever, on a
micro-budget, putting each year’s programme together with our
very loyal local supporters and sponsors and with the revenue we
earn from our outdoor film events (the Grantchester screenings
are a major source of funds and promotion for the Festival).
However, we struggle every year to keep the standard high and
only manage through the immense good will of our staff and
volunteers. My thanks to all the team who have been tireless in
seeking out titles for your viewing and in helping to produce this
annual celebration of film.
We always aim to feature a Restorations and Rediscoveries strand,
including silent films with live music, and we are especially pleased
this year to present magnificent new prints of Casanova (1927),
Shiraz (1928), Mildred Pierce (1945) and The Wages of Fear (1953).
This year, in collaboration with the Festival of Ideas, we have
also programmed India Unboxed. This selection of silent cinema,
new documentaries and contemporary classics will feature
alongside the main F.o.I. programme. New Catalan cinema and
an expanded microcinema programme continue, along with 10
programmes of submissions - 5 feature-length productions and 5
themed ShortFusion programmes. This year we are introducing
a bespoke Virtual Reality strand. These programmes have been
designed to explore the boundaries of the VR experience - look out
for the 4 unique programmes limited to 5 participants per session.
The Festival is dedicated to the memory of Liz Scott, my partner
for over 20 years, for her support has been immense. Liz passed
away last January – a case of knowing all too late what cancer
had in store for her. If only …
The Festival pass is a great way to see the films you love and
save money. You pay just £30.00 for the pass and it buys you
£40.00 worth of Festival tickets. You can also apply your usual
Arts Picturehouse membership discount when purchasing
tickets for even bigger savings. Once you have your Festival
Pass, we recommend purchasing Festival tickets in advance
of your chosen screenings/events to avoid disappointment.
Please note that Festival Passes can ONLY be used to
purchase tickets from the Arts Picturehouse – from where you
can use your Pass to purchase tickets for ALL other Festival
venues. Festival Passes can’t be used online or at any other
venues. Please note it excludes CAFF closing night film.
Discounts
Picturehouse Members get a £2.00 discount on each Festival
ticket and avoid online booking fees. These discounts are
available at ALL venues if you show your Picturehouse
membership card and can work in conjunction with the
Festival Pass at Arts Picturehouse. *Please note the Family
Film Festival tickets and Silver Screen cannot have further
discounts applied to them.
Audience
Awards
Every year the Cambridge Film Festival crowns three
audience award-winning films. The Golden, Silver and
Crystal Punts go to the best feature, best documentary and
best short film, as voted for by you, the Cambridge Film
Festival audience. With these awards we aim to highlight the
outstanding work of filmmakers from around the globe and
we hope that you will assist us with voting in large numbers.
Voting connects you with the filmmakers, who eagerly
anticipate the outcome for their film. Before you go into a
screening of any “in competition” film, you will be handed a
voting card. Please rate the film and hand the card back to
Festival team members after the screening. You never know,
but your favourite Festival film might be amongst the three
winners this year!
BATTLE OF THE
SEXES | CFF 15
UK/USA, 2017, 121 mins.
Directors Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris
Starring Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Andrea Riseborough,
Natalie Morales, Sarah Silverman, Bill Pullman,
Alan Cumming , Elisabeth Shue
In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s world
champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men’s-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the
Battle Of The Sexes and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around
the world. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex
battles. The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality, but also struggling to come to terms with her own
sexuality, and Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his
family and wife. Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking
discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms that continue to reverberate today.
SURPRISE
FILM | CFF15
Every year we present a surprise film - which has absolutely
no advance warning of title, director, stars or genre - just
a screening time and a venue. And every year it sells out.
Without doubt the Surprise Film is the hottest ticket in the
festival. What will it be this year? Only festival director Tony
Jones knows for certain and the guessing game has started
amongst the festival team eager to find out. Past Surprise
Films have included Up!, Pirates Of The Caribbean, Burn After
Reading and Looper. So, with no hype and no reviews to
distract you, book your ticket, sit back in your seat, and enjoy.
filmmakers. Look out for their logo to see which
films in the programme are directed by women
An unprecedented look at the iconic shower scene in Alfred
Hitchcock’s Psycho, the ‘Man Behind the Curtain’, and
the screen murder that profoundly changed the course
of world cinema. 78/52 references the number of set-ups
Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. One entire week out of the four
weeks scheduled to shoot Psycho – a full quarter of the
Winner of the Special Jury Award at ‘Cinema Vérité’, Iran
A157 is the story of the ethical collapse occurring throughout
the war. It focuses on the lives of three Syrian Kurd girls who
their city and are now living in a refugee camp on the
Denmark, 2016, 89 mins. Danish/English with
Director Max Kestner
With Kristian von Bengtson, Peter Madsen,
Steen Andersen
Suddenly this film has taken on bizarre topicality. And this
is great fun. Two passionate eccentrics decide to send the
first Dane into space so set about building their rocket.
They create Copenhagen Suborbitals and start building
and testing. Fascinating for its engineering but more so to
see how the two friends break apart under the pressure of
the project. At the heart of the film is Peter Madsen, who
in August sank his own submarine and then was arrested
for the murder of journalist Kim Wall. Were the seeds of
this tragedy sown on the the rocket project? An even more
remarkable film in the light of current events.
Ana-Felicia Scutelnicu’s first solo feature is born from a
self-contained as she spends her last year of childhood in a
Moldovan village, but the outside world is reaching in as men
are drawn to her. Set against the changing seasons, each
representing a different tone to the drama and her suitors,
her of her uniquely ancestral singing voice. Filmmakers
Rob Curry and Tim Plester were granted intimate access
France, 2017, 85 mins.
Director Mark Kidel
With Jonathan Pryce (narration), Barbara Jaynes,
Judy Balaban, David Thomson
As Cary Grant famously remarked: ‘Everyone wants to be
Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant.’ Born Archibald
Leach in Bristol in 1904, Grant was the epitome of Hollywood
elegance, glamour and sophisticated wit, but this absorbing
portrait reveals the gulf between the urbane public persona
and the deeply insecure private man who, even at the height
of his fame, was desperate to find inner peace. Using a
wealth of movie clips alongside Grant’s previously unseen
home movies, extracts from his unpublished autobiography
and some telling interviews, filmmaker Mark Kidel charts
Grant’s poignant and fascinating journey of self-discovery.
We hope to welcome guests from the film to the screening.
Director Bill Morrison
Renowned New York-based filmmaker Bill Morrison tells
an extraordinary tale on several levels: back in 1903, the
movies arrived in Dawson City (Canada), previously the
centre of the Klondike Gold Rush. Because the town was
so remote, the film studios were reluctant to pay for their
prints to be returned, and thus it happened that a treasure
trove of discarded silent films ended up buried in permafrost
until their miraculous re-discovery in 1978. Combining
fascinating historical research with a wealth of clips from
this remarkable collection, Morrison vividly resurrects the
singer, is in love with Orlando, 20 years older than her. They are
planning for the future, when suddenly Orlando falls seriously ill
It’s Not Yet Dark tells the story of Simon Fitzmaurice, a
is trying to organise a joint concert in Tehran with French
women singers. The film follows Sara as she struggles
against the teachings that women’s singing is so tender
that it can arouse men, their voices being 9 times more
tender than men’s. Fortunately, combining women’s voices
can dilute the tenderness and so it is OK for women to sing
in groups, especially if combined with male singers. But
revolution is again in the air.
Force Majeure director Ruben Östlund returns with a knife-sharp satire on art,
culture and communication in the digital age. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2017
Cannes Film Festival, The Square stars Claes Bang (The Bridge), Elisabeth Moss (The
Handmaid’s Tale, Mad Men) and Dominic West (The Wire). Christian is a divorced but
devoted father of two, and the respected curator of a contemporary art museum
in Stockholm. He’s gearing up to launch their next show, ‘The Square’, a daring
installation examining altruism and our duty to help others. However, his own views
on social responsibility are put to the test when he becomes the victim of a scam,
forcing him to question the world around him and his place in it. With pitch-perfect
performances, inventive set pieces and a cutting deadpan wit, The Square is a
hilarious, unique and often surreal look at idealism and cynicism in the modern world.
power. Pauline, a care assistant who is public-spirited and
frustrated by the way her town is going, is encouraged to
stand for election as the local town mayor. She is a ‘good’
about immigration and populism, the film combines
excellent filmmaking from Lucas Belvaux, clever mise-enscène
Glasgow-born Lynne Ramsay is widely reckoned to be one of the
most original and ambitious directors of contemporary British
independent cinema. CFF is proud to present her new feature You
Were Never Really Here, which secured two awards and a sevenminute
standing ovation at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. This
special focus offers aficionados of Ramsay’s filmmaking the chance
Director Lynne Ramsay
Starring William Eadie, Tommy Flanagan,
Lynne Ramsay’s brilliant debut feature, a compelling portrait
of a young boy’s life in 1970s Glasgow, announced the arrival
of a major new talent. Twelve-year-old James (William
Eadie), growing up on a bleak housing estate, is struggling
with guilt over his role in a terrible accident, while also
striving to survive and be accepted in a world dominated
by teenage gangs and brutality. Ramsay creates a series of
spellbinding images, each one of which is integral to the plot
and revealing of character. A film that will remain with you
for years.
KEVIN | 15
UK/USA, 2011, 112 mins.
Director Lynne Ramsay
Starring Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Rock Duer,
Kevin is the ultimate scary kid in this haunting evocation of
a parent’s worst nightmare – a malevolent, uncontrollable
child who turns out very badly indeed. Adapted from Lionel
Shriver’s Orange Prize-winning novel about a mother of a
boy who went on a killing spree at his high school, Lynne
Ramsay’s subtle psychological thriller raises disturbing
questions about nature versus nurture. Tilda Swinton is
outstanding as Kevin’s anguished mother, while Ramsay’s
intriguingly fractured, dream-like narrative conjures up an
atmosphere of intense dread.
Director Lynne Ramsay
Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Ekaterina Samsonov,
Alessandro Nivola, Alex Manette, John Doman,
Judith Roberts
After a number of aborted projects Lynne Ramsay delivers a
powerful return to filmmaking with this brilliantly executed
minimalist noir. Joe (Phoenix) is a Gulf War veteran and
former FBI agent turned killer-for-hire, specialising in saving
victims from child sex rings. When Nina, a US Senator’s
daughter is kidnapped, he is contracted to dispense with
the perpetrators and save the girl but an escape plan
derails, unleashing a maelstrom of violence. A meticulous
meditation on repression and abuse taken from the novel by
Jonathan Ames, the film has drawn parallels with Taxi Driver
but has a brilliance and originality all of its very own. The
score is by Jonny Greenwood.
FESTIVAL
VAYA | CFF 15
South Africa, 2016, 104 mins.
MC Wed 25 | 6.45
Director Akin Omotoso
Starring Warren Masemola, Harriet Manamela,
Sihle Xaba
Three people board the train for Johannesburg – a man
looking for a job, a boy seeking out his father’s body and a
young woman tasked with delivering a child to her mother.
They each go on their separate ways in the urban jungle,
yet their paths are fated to cross in the different situations
in which they find themselves. Cleverly weaving the three
separate plots, Vaya is as much a celebration of the diversity
of Johannesburg, as a beautifully gripping, deeply moving
and often funny narrative about struggling for survival and
dignity in the city.
Director Daouda Coulibaly
Starring Ibrahim Koma, Inna Modja, Quim Gutiérrez
Ladji is a bus driver, desperately working to raise himself and
his sister, Aminata, who has been forced into prostitution,
out of poverty. When he doesn’t get the promotion he was
expecting, he decides to contact Driss, a drug dealer who
owes him a favour. Ladji risks his life to carry drugs from
Conakry to Bamako and quickly becomes the top trafficker
in the drug underworld, giving him easy access to money,
women and a life that he had never imagined possible. But
the price to pay is high. Nominated for the Sutherland Award
ASK THE SEXPERT | CFF 15
USA, 2017, 75 mins. English, Hindi.
Director Vaishali Sinha
The highly popular 93-year-old sex advice columnist, Dr.
Watsa, writes for a daily newspaper in Mumbai. Despite sex
being a taboo topic in that country, the column’s brand of
non-moralistic advice and humor has emboldened many
to write in with their questions, the vast majority of whom
seek basic information. Director Vaishali Sinha brilliantly
captures Dr. Watsa’s treasured personality with compassion
and humor, promoting the importance of sexual pleasure,
consent and information as a passage to gender equality
and health.
CHARULATA | U
India, 1964, 117 mins. Bengali with English subtitles.
Director Satyajit Ray
Starring Madhabi Mukherjee, Soumitra Chatterjee,
Sailen Mukherjee
Set in late 19th-century Bengal, this adaptation of a novella
by Rabindranath Tagore boasts an unforgettable heroine:
Charulata - beautiful, intellectual and brimming with vitality.
Neglected by her politics-obsessed husband, she feels lonely
and trapped in their vast, ornate mansion, but things change
when her husband’s charming younger cousin, an aspiring
poet, comes to stay. He encourages her literary talent and
she soon discovers a soulmate and maybe something more.
With ravishing cinematography by Subrata Mitra and a
wistful score by Satyajit Ray himself, this was the great
director’s favourite of all his films.
Cannes prize-winning The Cinema Travellers is a journey with the traveling
cinemas of India, which bring the wonder of the movies to faraway villages
annually. Seven decades on, as their lorries and cinema projectors crumble
and film reels become scarce, their audiences are lured by slick digital
technology. Filmed over five years, The Cinema Travellers accompanies
a shrewd exhibitor, a benevolent showman and a maverick projector
mechanic who bear a beautiful burden: to keep the last traveling cinemas of
the world running.
An intimate, poignant documentary, recalling Giuseppe Tornatore’s 1988
Oscar winner Cinema Paradiso in its effusive love of 20th-century celluloid
splendor. NICK SCHAGER, VARIETY
THE CLOUD-CAPPED STAR | PG
Meghe Dhaka Tara
India, 1960, 126 mins. Bengali with English subtitles.
Director Ritwik Ghatak
Starring Supriya Choudhury, Anil Chatterjee, Gita De
Ritwik Ghatak (1925 - 1976), the maverick Bengali director,
has been described by critic Jonathan Rosenbaum as ‘one
of the most neglected major filmmakers in the world’. Set in
Calcutta, his most famous film centres on a sensitive young
woman who sacrifices herself to support her struggling
family, refugees from East Bengal following the Partition of
India. By contrast, her elder brother, a would-be singer, puts
personal ambition before family duty. With striking imagery
counterpointed by a richly imaginative soundtrack, Ghatak’s
masterpiece is an undisputed classic of world cinema. Its
searing depiction of the refugees’ plight is now more relevant
than ever.
INDIA IN A DAY | CFF PG
India, 2016, 86 mins. English/Hindi with English subtitles.
Director Richie Mehta
On October 10, 2015, Ridley Scott, Anurag Kashyap, Richie
Mehta and Google invited the people of India to share their
stories about life in an evolving India - from the ordinary
to the extraordinary; personal to profound. The result:
India’s first fully crowdsourced feature film. India In A Day is
‘Kinemacolor’, invented in 1906 by G. A. Smith of Brighton,
was the cinema’s first successful colour system, flourishing
commercially until 1917. Until recently, examples of the
process were considered all but lost. But earlier this year –
thanks to some exciting finds – a remarkable selection of
newly restored shorts was unveiled at Cinema Ritrovato,
Bologna’s renowned festival of archive film. This programme
Starring Ivan Mosjoukine, Diana Karenne, Jenny Jugo
A sensational highlight of French silent cinema, this
THE TRUTH | CFF 15
La Vérité
France, 1960, 127 mins. French with English subtitles.
Director Henri-Georges Clouzot
Starring Brigitte Bardot, Sami Frey, Charles Vanel
Brigitte Bardot gives one of her best-ever performances as
Dominique, a rebellious, free-spirited young woman on trial
for the murder of her lover, a brilliant classical musician.
Compelling court room scenes show how the sensual, funloving
Dominque is judged not only on the evidence, but for
her refusal to conform to the prevailing hypocritical morality.
Through vivid flashbacks, conjuring up the bedsits, cafés and
student life of Paris, she emerges as a surprisingly complex
character. Director Henri-Georges Clouzot commented:
‘I wanted to show the constant ambiguity of things and that
the same event can be shown from several different points of
view.’ Newly restored in 4K by Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Arguably the most suspenseful movie ever made, Clouzot’s sardonic thriller
combines acute psychological insight with brilliantly staged action. In a South
American backwater of hellish poverty, an exploitative US oil company offers
four desperate men $2000 each to drive two trucks of highly explosive nitroglycerine
to a distant oil well where fire is raging. Nerves of steel are required to
watch their excruciating progress across 300 miles of dangerously rough terrain
where the slightest jolt could mean sudden extinction. Cut for its US release
because of alleged anti-Americanism, Clouzot’s masterpiece is a devastating
indictment of capitalist exploitation and of human folly in general.
MAKING THE VIRTUAL REAL
VR at the 2017 Cambridge Film Festival | Saturday 21st to Monday 23rd October
Curator
Catherine Allen
During the 2017 Cambridge Film Festival we will
feature virtual reality (VR) for the first time, showing
four extraordinary works over three days; works that
demonstrate the current capability of immersive
technology in the hands of pioneering creatives.
We’ll offer audiences a chance to experience a range of
boundary-pushing virtual experiences.
The programme has been curated by
Catherine Allen, founder of Limina
Immersive and producer of two of the
BBC’s first VR experiences. Catherine
is widely regarded as a VR pioneer
and thought leader. She is part of the
BAFTA VR advisory team, sitting on
the education committee, and has
judged VR for both Sheffield Doc Fest
and Raindance film festivals. Catherine
produced one of the BBC’s first VR
documentaries, Easter Rising: Voice of a
Rebel, which was described by Broadcast
Magazine as ‘genre-defining’. Before
VR, Catherine worked at acclaimed
educational app publisher, Touch Press;
winning a BAFTA on the Disney Animated
app, with Disney Interactive.
In order to create a sense of an audience for what remains an individual experience, we are setting up five Oculus Rift systems in our
‘screening room’ at Emmanuel College. Each day will have its own dedicated VR experience. That VR piece will be ticketed, and screened
hourly – offering you a chance to experience this emerging medium and then share your thoughts afterwards,
traditional style in Picturehouse Bar. The programme includes a range of challenging works that stretch the
creative boundaries of this emerging medium. Restricted to 18 plus only. Please note that Monday’s piece,
Second Date, includes particularly adult content.
A historical VR experience that’s part documentary,
part virtual theatre. Step into one man’s memories
and journey back to a moment that changed Irish
history forever: the 1916 Easter Rising. The story
revolves around a tape recording of Willie McNeive
about his involvement as a Republican rebel in the
Easter Rising 60 years before. Each scene in this
story has a fixed point of view – the viewer can look
around a full 360-degree environment and see the
action while listening to recollections of the events
in various locations.
By Jennifer Lyon Bell, Blue Artichoke Films and
Condition One
One of VR’s most exciting qualities is its powerful ability to
foster feelings of intimacy. Second Date demonstrates what
VR is capable of in terms of showing the nuances of human
relationships, sensuality and sexuality. Set on an Amsterdam
houseboat, Second Date is an observational, lighthearted,
unscripted portrait of two young people fumbling towards
ecstasy. Trying to find common ground, their conversation
veers from clumsy to joyous and back again - until they
finally start connecting for real.
development does not spell happiness for the people.
Back home, he receives the same investigations as he
did in the south, and feels great sadness of being a
human trapped in the ideology between the two divided
countries.
Regardless of will, humans get stuck in the political
ideology of the places they are born in. Through the
how we are sacrificed by the divided Korean peninsula.
I AM A SPY
2014, 23 mins.
Director Sarah Wood
It was only in the twentieth century we needed papers to
have an identity. Kafka’s Joseph K scrabbled in his pocket for
something better than a bicycle license to prove who he was
in the brave new world where official documents separate
those who belong from those who are not allowed to belong.
The borders of the new nation state offered frames for
subterfuge. What happened on one side of the border had to
be understood on the other. In the century when we invented
aviation, when we invented cinema, in an age when we can
move more and see more than any other point in history
why have we become so watchful and so performative? I Am
a Spy is a film that observes this watchfulness.
FOR CULTURAL PURPOSES
ONLY
2009, 8 mins.
Director Sarah Wood
In an age dominated by the moving image what would it
feel like to never see an image of the place that you came
from? The Palestinian Film Archive contained over 100
films showing the daily life and struggle of the Palestinian
people. It was lost in the Israeli siege of Beirut in 1982. Here
interviewees describe from memory key moments from the
history of Palestinian cinema. These scenes are drawn and
animated. Where film survives, the artist’s impressions are
corroborated. This is a film about reconstruction and the
idea that cinema is an expression of cultural identity – that
cinema fuels memory.
FALL INTO RUIN
An installation by William E. Jones.
Heong Gallery, Downing College
Friday 19 - Monday 23 every day
A gallery installation by William E Jones’s of his latest photo/film work Fall into Ruin looking
at the Greek art collector / dealer Alexander Iolas. Fall into Ruin (32 mins) tells the story of
the artist’s relationship with Alexander Iolas, the Greek art dealer and collector who at the
height of his career owned galleries in New York, Paris, Milan, Geneva, Madrid and Athens,
the latter being the city where he retired and the setting of Fall into Ruin. Active between
the 1940s and the 1980s, Iolas was known for his association with the Surrealists, and for
giving Andy Warhol his first solo exhibition in 1952 — this resulted in a life-long friendship.
He also contributed in forming and advising on the collection of the great art patrons John
and Dominique de Menil.
Following his death in 1987 from AIDS, Iolas’s property in Athens was looted. His collection,
which included artifacts and art from ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, as well as pieces
by the artists Iolas worked with, including Max Ernst, René Magritte, and Man Ray amongst
many others, vanished. This prevented the realisation of Iolas’s vision for his villa to be
turned into a contemporary art museum. The empty house was completely vandalized and
today stands as a modern ruin. Fall into Ruin sees Jones return to the sites he first visited at
the age of 19 and revisit the story of Alexander Iolas through views of his villa in its current
ruined state, shots of contemporary Athens and antiquities on display at the National
Archaeological Museum, as well as the original photographs Jones took of Villa Iolas in
1982, also exhibited at Heong along with the film.
THE COLOUR OF HIS HAIR
UK, 2017, 23 mins.
Director Sam Ashby
Starring Sean Hart, Josh O’Connor
Sam Ashby’s The Colour of His Hair merges drama and
documentary into an impressionistic meditation on queer
life under the law. Based on an unrealised film script written
in 1964 for The Homosexual Law Reform Society, a British
organisation that campaigned for the decriminalisation of
homosexual relations between men. The script tells of John
and Peter, a young professional couple living in London who
are the victims of a blackmail scam. Documentary footage,
news clippings, archive films, and oral history recordings are
woven around this central drama, highlighting the power
inherent in the the archiving of queer trauma.
ON THE MOUNTAIN
1973, 35 mins.
Director Margaret Tait
Made in Edinburgh’s Rose Street, On the Mountain
incorporates the whole of a previous film (Rose Street, 1956),
including the leader and the titles. The original was shot
in black and white, and the negative was lost, and for this
reason Tait had the idea of preserving the film by framing it
complete in colour, in a contrasted look at the same street
in 1974. On the Mountain records and preserves the change.
The camera broods and recognises the dustcart. Changed
is too gentle a word, the street has ben ripped apart by the
developers. An ugly modern precinct has emerged with
shabby boutiques and plastic food. The back lane where
the children played hopscotch reveals a gap site, a decaying
Princess Street, with thumping machines and concrete.’ -
DELIRIA
2006, 2 mins.
Director Cordelia Swann
By taking a single scene and overlaying it three times using
delays and changes to density the result is a delirious
musical and visual ‘round’ exposing the over heightened
emotions of Vivien Leigh as she at first whispers for her
lover’s return and then runs to him across an ersatz
palace and terrace with a barely visible Bay of Naples and
Mt Vesuvius smoldering in the background.
THE JAZZ ROOM
UK, 1985, 42 mins.
Director Dick Jewell
The method of making hinged on creating an ongoing
dialogue with the subject to produce a living document.
The Jazz Room was about the development of jazz dance
at The Electric Ballroom, Camden. At the start of each night
the ‘film so far’ was projected above the dance floor, before
continuing to shoot more material to incorporate into the
film. Over a period of a year and a half this created an
interaction between the dancers and the film that informed
the development of the dance style.
gaining unique access to a range of research sites, archives
postwar dream of a post-empire future, apocalyptic terror as
entertainment, or zone beyond our understandings of time.
DESERT ROSE
In Desert Rose we are taken from the cottonwoods, and
sinister and tragic than mere glitter, vice or gambling.
For part of my childhood, to recuperate from tuberculosis,
I was taken to live in the idyllic mountains of northern
Nevada, where the occasional nuclear cloud drifted north
from the Test Site, sixty miles from the city of Las Vegas.
ELECTRO-PYTHAGORUS
(A PORTRAIT OF MARTIN BARTLETT) | CFF 15
2017, 45 mins.
Director Luke Fowler
The subject of my new 16mm/35mm film titled
Electro-pythagorus is the Canadian computer music
pioneer Martin Bartlett - who studied with Pauline Oliveros,
David Tudor, John Cage and Pandit Pran Nath. His life and
work are in danger of being erased from cultural memory
since his death from AIDS in 1993. Drawing on an extensive
use of hitherto unseen archival material - correspondence,
travel journals, workbooks, personal photos and films, as
well as a huge body of unreleased music and field recordings
created over his lifetime. I employ my own 16mm camera as
a tool to aid documentation; whilst also creating a
subjective knowledge and connection to the places and
people Bartlett touched. Martin’s biography includes
joint-founding of the Western Front (an inter-disciplinary
artists run centre in Vancouver), his involvement with
Canada Shadows, his study of Asian music and tuning
systems, and his turn to proto-computer music in the late
70’s. While these areas are ostensibly the subject -my
montage refuses to reduce Bartlett’s life to a onedimensional
allegory. Instead, it ruminates on the struggles
and politics of living, as well as enjoyment of the exalted
states of being; of pleasure, sensuality and social
communion. The films shifts between different visual
registers and tones, yet aims to remain sonically faithful to
Bartlett’s original texts and music.
KINKY GERLINKY | CFF 15
2002, 101 mins.
Director Dick Jewell
Kinky Gerlinky was the biggest, most fabulous, most
stylish nightclub London has ever seen. This documentary
edited from over 200 hours shot on 21 nights, conveys the
experience of one full-on night out at the club, and gains a
unique intimacy with most of the action directed to camera.
Club culture, by nature a fleeting phenomenon, is rarely
recorded in any depth. This documentary works to redress
this fact. Above all, Kinky Gerlinky is about self–expression
and glamour, excess and enjoyment. As an examination
of the cultural and sexual politics of celebrity and glamour
it is unique.
The Blood We Saw
by Josephine Links
How does time pass – waiting,
hoping, fearing – after a long
escape, in search for a little piece
transit space where everyday life
merges with memories and
pictures of the past. The Blood We
Saw explores this life in a state of uncertainty and gives a
notion of how people there might feel. People who left
everything behind and still cannot forget anything of what
they’ve lived through.
