We would like to share with you a wonderful poem written by Chelsea, a young 

person who has been placed with one of NFA’s carers in Lincolnshire. Chelsea 

explores a difficult time in her life throughout the poem and the effects that 

fostering has had, helping her to develop strong, loving relationships. 

The relationships were horrible. Then everything was terrible. 

Heartbroken was how I felt all the time. Then turned into the worst crime. 

Every day I was so depressed. And everything turned into a mess. 

Smashing the house was the worst thing I’d done. And it was really not that fun. 

The feeling of the police at my bedroom window. All of a sudden, I felt really low. 

My life. 

Falling out with my family what can I do, a nice fresh start and something new. 

I had enough so I went to London. The whole thing felt terrifying and I felt done in. 

That night we all got high, I felt I was dancing in the sky. 

Hearing my name on the news. Got me shaking in my shoes. 

My life. 

I walked in the doors and it felt like a prison. The whole 7 months felt like a mission. 

Upset was the worst thing I’ve felt. I just wanted to hide and melt. 

How can depression make you feel so sad? I thought it won’t make you feel so bad. 

For the first few weeks I was annoyed. Everything around made me feel destroyed. 

My life. 

Leaving the place was such an achievement. So happy I thought I was dreaming. 

Foster care was a whole new place. Like I won my first 100-mile race. 

Loved is the first thing I felt. Wrapped around tightly like a seat belt. 

After all of this we made up. Finally, after this horrible break up. 

Our relationships are stronger than before. We love each other more and more. 

My life.

Northampton Area Diabetes UK Group was formed over 48 years ago. We are an active 

group of volunteers holding seven meetings in the Lecture Hall at Northampton General 

Hospital per year. All meetings are diabetes related and we offer a warm welcome to 

anyone who has diabetes or is interested in the condition. 

From the beginning there have always been strong links with the professionals from the 

Northampton Diabetes Team who are part of the group. It is only because we have their 

support that the group has been so successful. We usually hold a Diabetes Open Day in 

conjunction with the Diabetes Team on a Saturday morning once every year at St Giles 

Parish Rooms when the public can drop in and get advice from the specialist and research 

nurses, podiatrists and dietician as well as chat to people who have lived with diabetes - 

some for many years. 

Children and young people living with the condition are also supported. The Parents Group 

hold an activity day once a year at Adventure Ways in Moulton. The children and their 

siblings enjoy supervised craft and sporting activities all day while the parents take part in a 

programme of talks, discussions and workshops with a paediatric and adult diabetes

Spring is the ideal time to get out and get active, with the 

weather improving and the days getting longer. 

Getting more exercise and making healthier choices can go a long way to 

reducing your risk of dementia. While some things that affect your risk of 

dementia can’t be changed, such as your age or genes, there are many 

things you can change. These five things are especially important if you’re in 

your 40s, 50s or 60s - but they’re relevant to everyone. 

1. Get moving 

One of the best ways to reduce your risk of dementia is taking part in regular 

physical exercise. It’s good for your heart, circulation, weight and mental 

wellbeing. Try to do a combination of activities you’ll enjoy as you’re more 

likely to stick to them, such as aerobic activities that get you moving, brisk 

walking, riding a bike or pushing a lawnmower. Also try ‘resistance activities’ 

that work your muscles, such as digging and shovelling in the garden, or 

lifting weights. 

2. Eat well 

A healthy, balanced diet is likely to reduce your risk of dementia, as well as 

other conditions including cancer, type 2 diabetes, obesity, stroke and 

heart disease. 

Most of us know we 

should eat five 

portions of fruit and 

vegetables each day 

but it’s also a good 

idea to eat fish or 

other omega-3 rich 

foods at least twice a 

week. Base meals 

around starchy foods 

like bread, pasta and 

potatoes. Also be 

wary of hidden salt in 

foods and keep sugary 

foods as a treat.

3. Quit smoking and cut down on alcohol 

If you smoke, you’re putting yourself at much higher risk of developing 

dementia later in life, as well as other conditions such as cancer and stroke. 

Drinking too much alcohol also increases your risk of developing dementia. 

Aim to drink no more than 14 units per week. That’s the equivalent of six 

pints of 4% lager in a week or 6 glasses of 175ml wine in a week (13% ABV). 

4. Keep your mind active 

You can also help to reduce your risk of dementia by exercising your mind. 

Research suggests that regularly challenging yourself mentally seems to build 

up the brain’s ability to cope with disease. 

Find an activity you enjoy, as you’re more likely to keep it up. Try doing 

puzzles or crosswords, learn a new language, play card games, study for a 

course or write articles or stories. 

You might want to do some of these activities with friends or neighbours. 

Spending time with other people is an important part of keeping your mind 

active. 

5. Look after your health 

Taking control of your health will help reduce your risk of dementia. If you’re 

aged 40-74, start by getting your free NHS health check. You’ll be invited to 

this by your GP. 

It’s important to see the GP if you’re worried about health problems such as 

depression, hearing loss, or not getting enough sleep. All of these might 

increase your risk of dementia.

The advanced driver course provides members of the 

public with effective post driving test training. It is 

appropriate for anyone with a driving licence, no matter 

what age. The course will raise your driving skills to 

advanced test standard and will build on your existing 

experience. It will also help those who experience 

difficulty with certain roads and situations. Things they 

may actively avoid. Motorways for example, or multilane 

roundabouts, both commonly present problems for 

some people.

Broad beans ripe to pick go down with the fly 

Peas shrivel from drought and you just watch them die,

Thank God for the rhubarb I hear someone say, 

By the end of the summer these battered brave men 

Will all dig their gardens and start over again, 

But there is more to allotments than gardening and toil 

It’s a place to unwind from the world you recoil,
