6 Tuesday February 13 2018 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi News Trust building relocated • By Sophie Cornish A NEW building for the Shirley Community Trust was relocated from St Albans to MacFarlane Park yesterday. The building, which has a large meeting room, two offices, a kitchen and toilets, was donated to the city by the Lions Clubs International Foundation following the February 22, 2011, earthquake. It was previously used as the St Albans Community Centre on Colombo St. There were some delays to the process as the city council initially estimated the cost to relocate the building would be $100,000. However, more detailed planning revealed it would cost $225,000. The initial $100,000 was approved through the city council’s Annual Plan. An additional $125,000 was fast tracked for the move. The trust has been mainly operating out of a small building at MacFarlane Park for 16 years. Trust manager Jane Mitchell said the new building is a “very exciting” prospect. “We will still be operating out of the smaller building, but now there will be room for other things to happen,” Mrs Mitchell said. SALLY MCPHERSON loves all things equine. Now the 17-year-old Rangi Ruru Girls’ School student has been named in the New Zealand Team for the American Quarter Horse Youth World Cup in Bryan, Texas. But don’t get it confused with rodeo. Think dressage with a western twist, that’s american quarter horse, Sally said. “It’s not rodeo. “It’s very precise and technical. But it’s also very colourful and sparkly unlike the more demure dressage,” she said. Sally said there’s a fair bit of bling involved in the outfits which are quite heavy from all the rhinestones. “Some jackets and tops can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Many are specially made for the competitor and the horses are also bedazzled,” she said. Sally and her team will head to the United States in June to compete for medals in cutting, reining, horsemanship, ranch riding, trail, western riding, hunt seat equitation, hunter under saddle and showmanship. She will have a horse provided by the organisers. She’s the only Christchurch member of the youth team and Sally said it’s the realisation of a goal she set herself many years ago. “I have been working towards this for a long time,” she said. “My aim is to learn as much as I can and be proud of my achievements. Mr McPherson said he and his wife have supported Sally every step of the way in what’s been a huge commitment over the years. “She puts in a massive amount of work, attending national competitions in the North Island and the New Zealand Youth Development Squad camps four times a year for two years,” he said. Mr McPherson said he is excited and proud to see Sally have the opportunity to compete in the United States competition, representing New Zealand alongside 19 other countries. The intersection of Cranford and Fraser Sts has had two new traffic islands following fears of mishaps around Papanui Primary School. Papanui-Innes Community Board deputy chairwoman Emma Norrish said she has head concerns for safety of motorists and pedestrians from a number of locals when turning right off Fraser St onto Cranford St. The New Zealand Transport Agency was lobbied by the city council to install the new traffic islands, with work finishing Emma Norish on Friday. “The new traffic islands will make turning right out of Fraser St easier and safer by ensuring Cranford St Drivers don’t enter the right hand lane too soon or use the right turn lane as a short cut to Main North Rd,” a letter to residents from NZTA said. The islands will guide vehicles from Fraser St into the correct lane and ensure drivers on Cranford St don’t stray into the right lane. “This new layout should make this intersection easier and safer to use,” the letter said. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER A week after Nor’West News reported the Papanui-Innes Community Board is targeting abandoned and vacant properties in the area that could be targeted by vandals, a reader responded reporting another property at 21 Francis Ave in St Albans Christine Abbasi –There is a property in Francis Ave, the house numbers on either side of it are 19 and 25 so am unsure of its correct number. It appears to be on a single section. It is single-storey with garden vegetation now all over it. Last winter there was a derelict car parked beside it but that is now totally covered in vegetation too. It is sad as the rest of the houses in the street are well cared for. I look forward to hearing of the progress. Do these owners pay rates? If not the city council should be able to move them on.
