RANGI RURU Girls’ School<br />

students have been named in the<br />

New Zealand Secondary Schools’<br />

Symphony Orchestra.<br />

First violins include Yuna<br />

Chon, Sarah Lawrence, Emily<br />

Davey and Lucy Costellow, with<br />

Rachel McSweeney the section<br />

leader on the second violin.<br />

Victoria Park and Rebecca<br />

Harris will be playing in the<br />

viola section while Eugene In is<br />

the section leader for cello.<br />

Pippa Lange has earned a place<br />

in the flute section and Amy<br />

Clough and Adelina Orwin have<br />

been named oboes. Adelina is<br />

the section leader.<br />

The students will meet with<br />

the other members of the secondary<br />

schools’ orchestra during<br />

the April break at St Margaret’s<br />

College for rehearsals and concerts.<br />

Former students have earned<br />

professional level qualifications<br />

with Valerie Xiang earning an<br />

Associate Royals School of Music<br />

diploma with distinction on the<br />

organ.<br />

Yuna Chon earned a Trinity<br />

of London College diploma with<br />

distinction on violin and Victoria<br />

Park earned one on piano.<br />

Sarah Lawrence was awarded a<br />

performers’ certificate from the<br />

London college with distinction<br />

on piano.<br />

Director of music Janet Kingsbury<br />

said the school’s Stellar<br />

programme continues to support<br />

and nurture exceptional musical<br />

talent, which is clear in the dedication<br />

she sees in students.<br />

“Our innovative and personalised<br />

programme enhances current<br />

music opportunities through<br />

offering masterclasses and workshops<br />

with mentors to inspire and<br />

engage young musicians,” she said.<br />

“We see talent in our young<br />

musicians that is a given in older<br />

professional musicians with much<br />

more experience.”<br />

returned to a new facility.<br />

The new Stewart Junior Centre<br />

will be formally opened on<br />

<strong>February</strong> 23 by Dame Adrienne<br />

Stewart, rector Christine<br />

Leighton and preparatory<br />

school principal Jonathan<br />

Bierwirth.<br />

The new facility includes two<br />

new playgrounds for the junior<br />

school and pre-school as well as<br />

new classrooms.<br />

caters for pre-school and<br />

junior school pupils.<br />
