Modernism Week’s signature February festival 

will take place February 15-25, 2018, highlighting 

midcentury modern architecture, art, interior 

and landscape design, and vintage culture in the 

Palm Springs area of Southern California. For the 

thirteenth year, the annual 11-day festival will 

feature a wide array of events including the Palm 

Springs Modernism Show & Sale, tours of iconic 

homes in more than 23 neighborhoods (including 

the Signature Home Tour on both weekends), 

architectural walking, biking and double-decker 

bus tours, tours of the historic Annenberg Estate at 

Sunnylands, classic cars, garden tours, a vintage 

travel trailer exhibition, nightly parties and a 

special series of talks about Frank Lloyd Wright, 

Preservation, and Legendary Women of Design. 

All events are open to the public and tickets go 

on sale November 1, 2017 at 12 p.m. PST at 

modernismweek.com. Attendees will be able to 

preview the events on the website without making 

purchases starting October 25. A portion of ticket 

proceeds benefit Modernism Week (a non-profit 

organization) and other local preservation, neighborhood 

and community groups. As additional 

events are finalized they will be added for sale on 

the website on the first of each month. 

“Modernism Week continues to expand the scope 

and reach of our events and programming,” said 

William Kopelk, Modernism Week Board Chairman. 

“This year, we will continue that trend by 

offering new events and educational opportunities 

while still featuring the beloved favorites that our 

audience anticipates. We will offer a compelling 

combination of educational talks and film screenings, 

exciting tours, and activities throughout the 

Coachella Valley and beyond. Our returning 

Modernism Week attendees will be thrilled with 

the selection of appealing new programs.” 

Signature Events 

One of the highlights of the first weekend includes 

the annual Modernism Week Opening Night 

Party on Thursday, February 15, presented by 

Ferguson Kitchen, Bath & Lighting Gallery. This 

chic red carpet affair will be teeming with vintage 

style and authentic swagger as attendees channel 

their inner Marilyn, Sammy or Hefner, for a 

night of entertainment, high style and glamour. 

The popular event will take place at the 1962 

Indian Canyons Golf Resort, designed by Donald 

Wexler and Richard Harrison. The Canyon 

Country Club, as it was originally known, has a 

legendary history as a favorite spot of Hollywood 

icons including Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Johnny 

Carson, Walt Disney and Dean Martin. For the

“After Dark” television series and be transformed 

into a swinging club reminiscent of fabulous cocktail

provided by Lulu California Bistro, and an open bar 

that offers specialty Rat Pack-era cocktails featuring 

Hendrick’s Gin. Attendees will dance the night 

away to the tunes of retro performer DJ Baz and 

a swinging show by The Dreamboats, an upbeat 

retro Rock & Roll group, back by popular demand, 

courtesy of Corian Design. 

New Events 

Fans of midcentury-era Hollywood films will enjoy 

Hollywood Revisited, a stunning musical revue that 

showcases a dazzling lineup of costumes worn 

by the stars in original Hollywood films. Set to 

the music that defined the times and presented by 

top notch Broadway and Hollywood performers, 

Hollywood Revisited lets the audience experience 

historic costume designs of Hollywood’s Golden 

Age.

on the tour route or upgrade to a new VIP chauffeur 

experience in which up to three participants

Midcentury modern places of worship will be 

highlighted in two new tours this year. The first 

tour, “Sacred Places - Modern Church Tour,” will 

feature more than seven houses of worship and 

emphasize how the architecture of the structure 

was designed to augment the purpose of the 

building. Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs will also be 

featured in a separate tour entitled 

“Architecture in Service of the Sacred and Spiritual” 

that contrasts the historic E. Stewart Williams 

structure with the 1980’s west-facing addition 

designed by David Christian. 

For the last few years, Modernism Week has offered 

attendees the opportunity to join home tours and architectural 

excursions outside of the immediate Palm 

Springs area. This successful expansion continues in 

2018 with home tours planned in surrounding desert 

cities including Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and 

Indian Wells. 

Donald Wexler’s classic 1964 Dinah Shore estate 

will be open to the public for a special Modernism 

Week event called A Night at the Dinah 

Shore Estate on Saturday, February 17. The 

party, a fundraiser for Save Iconic Architecture, 

will feature cocktails and the ability to 

explore this architectural gem. Save Iconic 

Architecture works to prevent the demise of 

unique and relevant properties in southern 

California.

27th Annual Softball Tournament Features

PALM SPRINGS – AAP – Food Samaritans (AAP), in 

cooperation with the City of Palm Springs and the Palm 

Lynda Springs Carter Gay Softball League, announces the 27th Annual 

Palm Springs Winter Classic Softball Tournament will take 

place February 9 -11, 2018. The teams participating in the 

tournament, which benefits AAP, are members of the North 

American Gay Amateur Athletic Alliance (NAGAAA), a 

nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting amateur 

athletics for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender 

(LGBT) community. 

Registration and a public opening reception will take place 

on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 7-10 pm at Hunter’s 

Nightclub, 302 East Arenas Road in Palm Springs. 

Throughout the weekend, teams will compete on several 

locations, including Demuth Park (4365 E. Mesquite Ave, 

Palm Springs) and Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral 

City. Games will start at 8 a.m. both days with finals 

in all divisions played at Big League Dreams. All games 

are free to the public. Competition is open to a maximum of 

80 teams in various divisions of play, and the tournament 

schedule will be posted at pswinterclassic.com. 

“This is a fun event for players and spectators, and the fact 

that it benefits AAP- Food Samaritans makes it that much 

more rewarding for us,” says Vicki Oltean, Tournament 

Director. “We hope the public comes out to the opening 

reception at Hunter’s on Friday night to meet the athletes, 

buy souvenir shirts and support this 26-year tradition of 

softball in the desert.” 

Sabastian The ‘Winter Skin Classic’ Care was established in 1991 as a fundraising 

event to help offset out-of-town tournament travel 

expenses for the Desert Heat Softball team members.

recreational legality, adults are allowed to 

possess up to one ounce of marijuana at a time, 

and cultivate up to 6 plants – as long as they are 

out of public view. 

When does it officially start? 

It officially began this January 1, at 6AM. 

What will I need to make a purchase? 

You must be 21 or older and have a valid ID-and 

your money of course! Cash only. 

How does the process and availability 

compare between Medical and Recreation? 

The law was written with a 6 month grace period. 

Within that time, procedures and processes 

may change, but for now, all of the same products 

will be available to adult recreational use 

as well as medical. One of the only differences 

will be the taxing of the products. Medical will 

most likely have less taxes. Look for changes 

in the 6 month period as the process evolves.

With your California Medical Marijuana Card, you

The Man Behind Porky Pig!Emmy 

Nominated Actor Comes to Camelot Theatre 

for Benefit Performance

What do Porky Pig, Tweety Bird, Marvin 

the Martian and Luke Skywalker all have 

in common? Bob Bergen. That’s right! This 

two-time Emmy nominated actor is one of 

the most successful voice-over artists of our 

generation. Yes, Bergen is the voice of all of 

these beloved cartoon characters in addition 

to a host of other popular characters on 

some of the biggest animated projects on 

both the big and small screens. 

Bergen, The Voice Master, will be featured 

in the upcoming On The Air! An Evening 

of Radio Show Classic to benefit Dezart 

Performs taking place at the Palm Springs 

Camelot Theatre on Thursday, March 8th. 

This popular event takes the audience back 

to the Golden Age of Radio and brings 

together a cast of celebrity performers 

who recreate, on stage, some of radio’s 

funniest and most memorable shows from 

the 1940s and 50s. Complete with vintage 

microphones, “on the air” and “applause” 

signs, the actors, musicians and sound 

effects crew will provide an unforgettable 

evening of uproarious entertainment. 

While participating in a previous On The Air! 

performance, Bergen dazzled the audience 

with an episode of Richard Diamond: Private 

Detective as well as an original piece written 

for Bergen’s Porky Pig. When asked what 

classic radio shows will be featured this 

year, Bergen explains, “Well, they’ve not 

yet told me what scripts we are doing. But if 

it’s anything like the last time I did this, and 

I’m sure it will be, it’s going to be a blast! 

We dress the part. They have an authentic 

sound effects person with all the bells and 

whistles of a classic radio show.” 

Additional talent joining Bergen on stage

Bob Hardt, Millicent Martin, Sal Mistretta, 

Roger Perry, Melinda Peterson, Phil Proctor,

A veteran of hundreds of voiceover projects 

such as Minions, Sing, Despicable Me 

3, Wreck It Ralph, The Secret Life of Pets, 

Trolls, Tangled, Cars, A Bug’s Life, WALL-E, 

Monsters Inc., Iron Giant, The Emperor’s 

New Groove, Star Wars and more, Bergen 

knew he had a calling at the early age of 

5 when he told his mother that he wanted 

to be the voice of Porky Pig. His mother 

responded with “You can’t be Porky Pig. 

You’re Jewish.” 

Never one to be discouraged, at the age 

of 14, he scoured all the Los Angeles 

area phone books in search of the iconic 

voiceover artist, Mel Blanc. He eventually 

found Blanc’s wife’s name and number and 

called the legendary artist. Blanc gave 

Bergen solid advice and thought he had 

heard the last of the young lad, but Bergen 

had other ideas. Bergen recalled Blank 

telling him that he had a recording session 

at a studio the next week and the eager teen 

managed to talk his way into the recording 

session by telling the secretary that he was 

a guest of Blanc and then by telling Blanc 

that he was the guest of the secretary! The 

two talents eventually became friends and 

colleagues and of course Bergen eventually 

took over as this generation’s voice of 

Blanc’s famous Porky Pig. This coming 

March marks the 28th anniversary since 

Bergen first voiced the Warner Brothers and 

Looney Tunes uber-famous pig. 

“Right now we are recording Season 3 of 

the New Looney Tunes. I also just worked

on a super cool new animated series”, says 

Bergen, “but I also signed a super NDA, so 

I can’t talk about it. Often we cannot talk 

about current work until it is released. But 

I’m busy, even if I can’t talk much about it.” 

And busy he is. When not working in the 

studio, Bergen himself teaches voice over 

in Los Angeles to up and coming talent and 

established actors looking to get into voice 

over work. It is his love for teaching that, in 

the past, had brought him to Palm Springs. 

He says, “There used to be a voiceover 

school in Palm Springs called Voicetrax. 

I would come in and teach weekend 

animation voiceover classes a few times a 

year. They closed down a while back.” 

When asked to pick some of his favorite 

career highlights, Bergen offered, “Well, 

certainly booking Porky Pig the first time, as 

that was a dream since I was a kid. One 

of my first major films was Gremlins, which 

was a pretty cool early gig and it was a 

Spielberg produced movie and directed 

by Joe Dante. My two Emmy nominations 

were thrills. They come with month long 

parties and receptions. Guys have it easy! 

We just wear the same tux over and over 

and year after year. But that red carpet is 

pretty surreal.” Bergen was nominated for 

an Emmy in 2011 and again in 2013 for 

Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for 

his work on television’s The Looney Tunes 

Show now available on the Boomerang 

Cable Network. 

Bergen has had the privilege of working 

with many big stars but he explains, that 

with animation, even though their names 

appear alongside each other, they don’t 

often work together in the studio. “Ya know, 

when you do animation for features, for the 

most part you work solo. So even though 

I’ve worked on films with the likes of Tom 

Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres, we’ve never 

actually been in the studio at the same time. 

It’s hard to coordinate everyone’s busy 

schedule. It’s actually a bummer. I’m not 

just a fan of so many who’ve worked with 

me on the same films, but as an actor, it’s 

always better to be able to work off each 

other.” 

Never one to rest, Bergen is also very 

active in the Television Academy where 

he is currently serving his second term 

as Co-Governor for the Performers Peer 

Group. His last Co-Governor was comic 

legend, Lily Tomlin and current Co- 

Governor is veteran character actress, 

Patrika Darbo. Bergen considers both 

actresses to be friends and this past 

November he presented Tomlin with 

a prestigious Society of Voice Arts & 

Sciences Award at Lincoln Center. 

In preparation for his Palm Springs 

appearance, Bergen seems to have a 

profound love and respect for radio. 

I feel I was born 40 years too late. He 

says, “I would have loved to have been 

a part of the old time radio generation. 

Back then, actors really got to stretch their 

chops. And there was just so much of it, 

from comedy to drama to thrillers. Just so 

much fun! And such awesome scripts!” 

Bergen is looking forward to visiting 

Palm Springs for his upcoming Camelot 

Theater performance and what is it that 

he likes best about this dynamic Desert 

city? The AC!!!!” Bergen quips! ”Also, I 

just love the mid century architecture. It’s 

like stepping back in time and it’s such a 

friendly town and there are always fun 

people to talk to while out and about,” 

adds Bergen. 

This talented guy is living large while 

successfully experiencing the dream he 

realized at an early age. The next time 

you attend an animated movie or watch a 

television cartoon, chances are that some 

of the voices you hear will be straight 

from Bergen’s mouth. 

The famous quote from Porky Pig, “That’s 

all folks”, does not apply here. We know 

that Bob Bergen is not done. He has a lot 

more work to do and we look forward to 

following him and hearing his famous voices 

for many years to come.

several types of bacteria. Some are responsible 

for gum disease and some are responsible 

for decay. Some people may have the best 

hygiene and still have gum disease and some

from gum disease at all. This is because they 

do not have the bacteria responsible for gum 

disease. Same thing for decay. Some people 

will be more susceptible to decay then others 

even if they eat just a little sugar and have 

decent dental hygiene. That is because they 

have that kind of bacteria in their mouth in a 

higher rate then another person. But that is 

not a reasonable excuse. More brushing 

and plaque control with a topical fluoride 

application daily, preferably with a special 

personal tray made at the dental office will 

help. 

Very rarely a person will suffer from gum 

disease and a high rate of decay. It is 

generally one or the other. If someone has 

a high rate of decay, in general they will 

not suffer from gum disease like bone loss, 

periodontal pockets and tooth mobility. 

It is a proven fact though, that the better 

the dental hygiene you have and the better 

your diet is in terms of limiting sugar intake, 

the healthier your gums and teeth will be. 

So, it is not true that decay affect only 

kids. As long as you have one tooth in your 

mouth you are subject to get decay if you 

leave dental plaque on it and eat sugar! 

The best way to prevent that is to have 

good dental hygiene at home and brushing 

after any sugar intake, and to visit your 

dentist 2 to 3 times a year.

The reason why cavities are more prevalent 

in children is mainly the fact that they tend

sugar will increase your chance of decay. 

Soft drinks, candies and anything sweet 

will have a potency to create decay in the

announce Tony Marchese, owner of TRIO 

Restaurant, will receive the Partners for Life 

Award, and Dr. Shubha Kerkar, Sr. Physician 

Specialist, will be recognized with the 100 

Women Award.

Now in its 24th year, the Steve Chase Humanitarian 

Awards gala has raised millions of dollars 

to care for people living with HIV. First organized 

by and named for famed interior designer 

Steve Chase – a former D.A.P. donor, volunteer, 

and board member – the gala is a highlight of 

the desert social season and preceded the night 

prior by an exclusive VIP pre-party honoring 

major donors and celebrity guests. 

Tony Marchese is the co-producer, with Palm 

Springs Life Magazine, of the Palm Desert 

Food and Wine Festival, a weekend-long event 

with over 4000 guests and growing. He also 

serves on the boards of Palm Springs Hospitality 

Association, and AAP Food Samaritans. He has 

supported Desert AIDS Project for many years 

by competing in Dancing with the Desert Stars, 

raising funds for Desert AIDS Walk as ‘Team 

Trio’, and participating in the annual Dining Out 

for Life Event . More than sixty restaurants participated 

in Dining Out for Life Coachella Valley 

in 2017, raising $230,000 for client services at 

D.A.P. Because of the generosity of participating 

restaurant owners and diners, D.A.P. ranks 

third in overall fundraising as compared to 52 

other participating U.S. cities. Trio Restaurant is 

consistently in the top three of local fundraising 

restaurants donating 60% of revenue that day to 

Desert AIDS Project. 

Tony’s early career was in Chicago where he 

was both a successful restaurateur and real 

estate professional. He won awards for both Top 

20 Best New Restaurants in Chicago Magazine 

for his upscale Brazilian Restaurant, Rhumba, 

and top sales awards for 15 years for his Keller

Williams Office. 

At age 40, Tony decided to leave the cold and 

move to Palm Springs. He continued in real 

estate but realized that people come to Palm 

Springs for the experience, and his true passion 

was reborn in the restaurant business. He 

opened Trio restaurant, “Where Palm Springs 

Eats,” with Mark Van Lannen in 2009. Mark 

decided to take a business turn toward a fine 

foods market and left Trio in 2017. TRIO has garnered 

recognition as one of Palm Springs’ top 

restaurants and hot spots by numerous lifestyle 

and travel publications and websites. Shortly 

after their grand opening, TRIO was named 

one of Palm Springs Best New Restaurants by 

Palm Springs Life Magazine in 2010. TRIO is 

also listed among TripAdvisor’s Top 10 Percent 

of Restaurants Worldwide, Open Table’s Top 

100 Hot Spots in America, 2017 Expert Choice 

Award and is Zagat Rated as Very Good to 

Excellent. Since then Tony has also expanded 

his business opportunities into Liquid Catering- 

a full-service beverage and event catering 

business. 

Tony is very excited about what’s coming next 

for him, he is partnering with Chef Andrew Copley 

and Juliana Copley of Copley’s restaurant 

to create a new restaurant experience in Palm 

Desert, CA, called AC3 Restaurant + Bar, New 

American food with a twist. Opening January 

2018. 

Dr. Shubha Kerkar has been making the lives 

of D.A.P. clients better for 25 years. She moved 

to Palm Springs in 1990 after completing her 

medical degree in Philadelphia, specializing 

in internal medicine at Episcopal Hospital, 

followed by a fellowship in infectious diseases 

at Hahnemann University Hospital. She started 

her career as an infectious diseases consultant 

and served as Director of Infection Control 

at Desert Regional Medical Center (DRMC). 

Soon after, she began volunteering at D.A.P., 

at the time only a small clinic on Vella Road 

near the airport. In 1993, she joined D.A.P. as a 

part-time infectious disease consultant. In 2008, 

she became one of the founding members of 

the 100 Women Charitable Foundation, which 

provides assistance to women and children with 

HIV/AIDS.

Thanks to attendance at the Steve Chase and 

other fundraising events, Desert AIDS Project ensures 

that newly-diagnosed HIV positive patients 

receive the medications they need to survive and 

thrive, and regular follow-ups to safeguard their 

well-being. D.A.P.’s Patient Assistance Program 

secures critical HIV and other medications at 

reduced cost. 

Dr. Shubha Kerka 

In her early career at D.A.P., when AIDS was a 

death-sentence, she worked toward setting up 

an HIV/ AIDS Health Center at DRMC, to care 

for D.A.P. clients who needed hospitalization 

and hospice care. With modern medicine, her 

practice has evolved into skilled management 

for many of these clients, allowing them to lead 

healthy, productive lives. She is also involved 

with research into newer medicines; those able 

to cure infections such as Hepatitis C. 

Dr. Kerkar is Board Certified in Infectious Diseases 

and for 12 years has maintained certification and 

credentialing by the American Academy of HIV 

Medicine (AAHIVS). She has been nominated as 

the Top Doctor in Infectious Diseases by Castle 

Connelly Survey every year since 2005 and has 

received multiple Palm Springs Life Top Doctor 

Awards in the Specialty of Infectious Diseases. Dr. 

Kerkar is on active staff at Desert Regional Medical 

Center and Eisenhower Medical Center. 

Co-chairs Patrick Jordan and Lauri Kibby will 

join Senator Barbara Boxer on February 10 

when they welcome more than 1,500 D.A.P. 

supporters at the 2018 Steve Chase Humanitarian 

Awards benefiting Desert AIDS Project. The 

party begins with red carpet arrivals LIVE on 

KMIR and KESQ at the Palm Springs Convention 

Center at 5:30pm. A new red carpet fashion 

experience will feature Palm Springs Fashion Editor, 

Susan Stein, Ethylina Canne, and Salvador 

Camarena. The awards kick off at 7:00 PM and 

will feature En Vogue as headline entertainment 

and Thelma Houston at the after-party.

sequel finds Paddington (Ben Whishaw) happily 

settled with the Brown family in London, where he has

While searching for the perfect present for his beloved 

Aunt Lucy’s hundredth birthday, Paddington sees a 

unique pop-up book in Mr. Gruber’s antique shop, and

the book is stolen, it’s up to Paddington and the Browns 

to unmask the thief. 

Reuniting many of the original film’s cast while welcoming 

those in new roles, “Paddington 2” stars Golden
