Suggestions for the Use of T & J Expanding Reamers
1 A T & J Reamer is a good quality tool and should not be abused. Reamers should not be thrown in with
other tools, but should be thoroughly cleaned, oiled and wrapped separately after each use.
2 Do not tighten nuts too much when adjusting the reamer, as this will cause strain. Always release the
tension on blades when not in use.
3 Use drills, which have been accurately ground and allow enough material to be removed by the reamer.
An insufficient cut will cause the tools to polish instead of cutting at all, and results in excessive tool
wear, producing rough holes.
4 To obtain best results light cuts of not more than .003" to .005" should be taken, though extremely light
cuts should be avoided as they dull the reamer blades.
5 The reamer should never be backed off. It should always be turned in the same direction until removed
from the work.
6 When reaming bushings, wherever possible reamer should be held in a vice and the bushing turned.
When a tap wrench is used, work must be securely fastened in a vise. Have the reamer enter the hole
about 1/4" and ream slowly until started, then use a smooth even pull on the wrench.
7 To ensure continuous service of reamer, it is advisable to have a spare set of blades on hand. Blades are
sold in complete sets ready for use. Single blades should not be replaced as replacement blades are
always supplied and fitted as a matched set. To obtain the best results, the slots must be cleaned
before inserting the blades.
8 When ordering new sets of blades, please give the symbol stamped on the shank of the reamer.
9 Kerosene or soluble oil is recommended as lubricants.
Suggestions for the Use of T & J Screw-on Extension Pilots
1 T & J Screw-on Extension Pilots convert the B47 and B33 Reamers into alignment reamers. This feature
permits the line reaming on such jobs as King Pins and Piston bushings.
2 The Screw-on Extension Pilot is supplied complete with a Double Taper Cone and a replacement Collar.
3 When using the Extension Pilot it is essential to ensure that the threads of both Reamer and Pilot are clean.
4 The method of fitting the pilot is a simple operation carried out by removing the front adjustment nut and
replacing it with the plain collar with the internal chamfer facing the blades. Screw on the Extension Pilot
and replace the sliding bush using either the long or short taper, whichever is more suitable for the
operation.
5 For inline reaming of two holes, seat the taper core supplied into the second hole to be reamed and pass
the pilot through the first hole and locate into the Cone and commence to ream the first hole, to ream the
second hole reverse the procedure.
6 The Pilot number corresponds to the Reamer number. (ie #15 Pilot is for H15 or ST15 Reamer)
