PROFESSIONAL REMODELERS COUNCIL BENEFITS OF THE COUNCIL The Remodelers Council was established in 1996 as an arm of The Greater Iowa City Area Home Builders Association to: • Offer a network for council members. • Improve the business and technical skills of Remodelers through Educational programs. • Demonstrate professionalism by establishing a code of ethics for members. • Publicize the council and its members by distributing membership directories and participating in such public events as the Home Show. • Parade or Showcase of Remodeled Homes. • Create a local support group for those in the industry to find solutions to common problems. 2017 LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS • The Membership Committee held two call blitzes bringing in 35 new members in 2017. Membership is at 303, retention rate is at 92% and we are the 3rd largest association in the state. • We continue to build on relationships with our legislators, elected officials and city staff to openly discuss important issues related to home building and homeownership. Many hours have been spent in our communities discussing Affordable Housing, TIF and The Johnson County Land Use and Development Plan. o <strong>HBA</strong>I went to the Hill in Des Moines this spring and met with our state legislators and NAHB visited the Capital in Washington DC in June. • Parade of Homes, Remodelers Parade and Home Show – Continue to improve and enhance our major events through highly effective marketing efforts and major sponsors supporting the event. o The 2nd Annual Bike Tour was held during the 50th Annual Parade of Homes and 20th Annual Remodelers Parade. Plans are to continue the tour next year. • Offered numerous educational programs to members and partnered with companies offering educational programs that have a direct benefit to our members. • The 2nd Annual Construction Camp took place this summer at the new STEM Center in Tiffin and Kirkwood Community College made it part of their K<strong>IC</strong>K Camps in Cedar Rapids. We received national and local recognition for our efforts in future workforce. • City High is going strong on the Intro to ACE class and building a track storage shed by the football field. Talk to Karyl about working with the students. • Many of our members traveled to Des Moines to listen to Dirty Jobs Mike Rowe talk about the skilled trade’s gap and the importance of bringing the trades back to our schools. • Recognize our leaders at the Annual Meeting, Parade of Homes and Remodelers Parade. Recognize school districts and partners that have worked to enhance our programs and services. NAHB PRIORITIES As the premier representative of the housing industry, NAHB is a repository of information for everyone from home owners to industry professionals of all types. We make it easy for you to find answers, whether you want to know about green home building, have an interest in building materials, and more. Key Issues NAHB continues to focus on several issues, including: 3 Regulatory Reform. On average, nearly 25 percent of the cost of a single-family home is attributable to government regulation. Equally disturbing, the cost of regulation in the price of a new home is rising twice as fast as the average American’s ability to pay for it. NAHB firmly believes that efforts to further regulate the housing industry must: o Be subject to greater oversight o Allow for increased public participation in the process o Be based on sound data o Only be undertaken after a careful consideration of the costs and benefits as well as the potential effects on small businesses. 3 Tax Reform. NAHB supports housing incentives in the tax code, including the deductions for mortgage interest and state and local property taxes. These incentives largely benefit the middle class, particularly younger households and larger families, by making homeownership more affordable. NAHB also supports the Low Income Housing Tax Credit, the primary tool for financing construction of new, affordable rental housing. The LIHTC is currently producing approximately 75,000 new apartment homes annually. 3 Housing Finance Reform. NAHB is a strong proponent of housing finance reform that would increase the role of private capital in the U.S. housing finance system but maintain a limited federal backstop to the nation’s housing finance system. Federal support is particularly important in continuing the availability of the affordable 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, which has been a staple of the U.S. housing finance system. 3 Labor Shortage/Immigration Reform. NAHB supports comprehensive immigration reform that will: o Safeguard our borders; o Establish a fair employment verification system; and o Create a market-based visa system that will allow more immigrants to legally enter the construction workforce as the housing industry gains momentum and the demand for workers increases. 46 2018 MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY
