HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF IOWA
Water quality funding ended up in a stalemate
between the House and Senate, so nothing
was done for this session. It will be back next
year for sure.
The HBAI Legislative Committee registered
in favor of 31 bills (or variations); opposed
eight; and marked undecided on 18 others.
We successfully fought off many harmful
bills, which always have the possibility of
resurfacing. It was the most successful
legislative session in many, many years.
There were many pro-business, regulatory
relief, and tax victories. We will continue to
add to this list – the environment is ripe for
taking this state to the next level with many
more economic development incentives. It’s
all about the economy – when it’s strong, our
members can’t help but be successful.
It was a great session and the level of
coalition building and support from likeminded
groups was exceptional. Our
members were exceptional – answering the
call multiple times to contact their legislators
with information that helped push our proconstruction
agenda forward. Thanks to
everyone who helped make it possible.
Federal Issues – We continue to work in
unison with NAHB on a host of federal issues
and Iowa is often in the limelight for working
through those topical discussions. We were
able to meet with all of our Federal legislators
in Washington D.C. and many of the
regulatory burdens placed on our members
are rapidly being overridden.
Regulatory – We continue to work
through the proposed adoption of the 2015
Energy Codes, but would like to take it back
to the 2009. It has been in the work for the
past two years. Iowa is currently on the 2012
with amendments.
Workforce Development – As our
members struggle to find competent workers,
the whole vocational technical training issue
is a giant problem. Great schools, great jobs,
solid wages – all are key to encouraging the
next generation to enter into our industry.
HBAI continues to build coalitions of likeminded
organizations and we put together
one of the greatest skilled trades events in
history. Over 1,600 people gathered at the
Iowa Events Center to talk about the trades
– including over 400 educators and students.
Mike Rowe was our featured speaker and did
a phenomenal job homing in on the needs
and opportunities that exist.
Legal – We have been successful partnering
on lawsuits that our members are involved in.
There are some cases in the works that will
lead to case law.
Scholarships – Our fourth annual Doug
Mayo Memorial Golf Invitational raised
over $25k in scholarship funds in 2017 and
the Mike Rowe Skilled Trades night added
another $50k. We use the funds for students
entering into the building trades.
