GREAT PLACES DESIGNATION
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Iowa City / Coralville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau along with
the Cities of Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, and University of Iowa
collaborated to apply for the state designation and was selected in November
of 2009 as an Iowa Great Place.
Iowa Great Places is a program designed to promote bold thought, innovation,
and entrepreneurship at the local and regional level in Iowa. Places
– neighborhoods, cities, counties, or regions – engage in an inclusive strategic
planning process to assess their strengths and areas of opportunity,
create a vision for augmenting their unique attributes and quality of life,
and design a roadmap to turn that vision into realty.
CITY OF IOWA CITY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
About the City
Indeed, the city center is as much a cultural gathering place as it is a venue for
retail commerce. New and taller buildings provide an increasing number of urban
condominiums overlooking shops, restaurants, and galleries.
Iowa Avenue Literary Walk
Because of Iowa City’s historic ties to literature, it has established the unique Iowa Avenue Literary
Walk that links the University’s Pentacrest and historic Old Capitol areas with parts of downtown
and the city’s north side community. Carved into the walk are tributes to some of America’s
literary giants who have ties to the University and the state of Iowa.
Parks & Green Spaces
Iowa City boasts a number of parks and green spaces - some are pocket-sized and are salted
through neighborhoods old and new. The largest, however, is City Park along the Iowa River.
Here are boat ramps, a traditional kiddy train, ball fields, a bocce court, tennis courts, and a large
outdoor pool.
Area’s Diverse Economic Base
Iowa City’s economic base is as diverse as its cultural offerings. The university’s educational,
research, and clinical activities make up a massive enterprise with an annual budget of about
$2.5 billion. Other major employers include firms as different as ACT, Pearson, Lear, Oral B
Laboratories, and Proctor & Gamble.
Downtown Iowa City:
A Place to Discover Treasures
The Old Capitol Cultural District and Downtown Iowa City is
a place to discover treasures. The tree-lined Pedestrian Plaza
features locally owned specialty stores, a variety of dining
options, street vendors, and regular entertainment.
