Beach under threat
Nahooners bemoan violation of by-laws
SIVENATHI GOSA
THE pristine Nahoon Beach is
under threat from people
who ignore municipal
by-laws and allow their dogs
to run freely without cleaning up
their mess.
Nahoon resident, Mark Ristow,
said this week he was concerned
about the state of the beach.
“There is a big board that states
the rules and by-laws of the
beach, but people have the
tendency of ignoring these. The
life guards always reprimand
people who consume alcohol in
public and those who play music
loudly, but ignore the ones that
stroll on the shore with their dogs
running freely instead of being on
a leash.”
He said recently a big dog was
let loose at the beach, which
caused fear among beachgoers.
“The dog looked like it could
attack anyone. Animals are
unpredictable. What frustrates me
the most is the people that do not
go after their dogs to pick up the
faeces. Someone could step in it.”
Ristow said he had alerted the
Buffalo City Metropolitan
Municipality about the matter and
has made sure that the executive
mayor, Xola Pakati, knows about
it, but the situation remains
unchanged.
“Nahoon beach is a family and
popular beach. I think the
municipality must take care of its
facilities, it cannot enforce
by-laws and then not take these
to action.”
BCM spokesperson, Bathandwa
Diamond, said going to the beach
should not cause any discomfort
to members of the public due to
inconsiderate people.
“The municipal by-law states
that dogs are not allowed within
the bathing area, and that dogs
walked on the beach should
always be on a leash.”
Owners who did not abide by
the rules could be liable for a fine
amounting to R300.
“Owners must also clean up
after their dogs, and should be
[held] liable for any attacking or
biting of a member of the public
by their pets.”
LOOK AFTER IT: Concerns have been raised
about irresponsible dog owners who
frequent Nahoon beach Picture: MADELEINE
“We urge people to report those
who are breaking the law by
contacting our Law Enforcement
Unit on 043-722-1819,” Diamond
said.

Merrifield launches iCreate
MADELEINE CHAPUT
IN AN effort to celebrate and encourage
individuality, creativity and innovation,
Merrifield Preparatory School have
launched iCreate, a pioneering classroom
experience.
iCreate, which means innovation,
creativity, research, engineering, arts,
technology and entrepreneurship, iCreate
offers all students from grade 1 to 6 the
opportunity to explore 'out of the box'
critical thinking.
“It is exciting to launch into 2018 with
such a creative programme within our
school. Every person on this planet is
creative and uniquely gifted. It’s what
drives our passion and makes us ‘come
alive’,” said Merrifield teacher and iCreate
programme coordinator Diane Bossé.
Over and above the school's IEB
curriculum, pupils spend one lesson a week
exploring and creating in a colourful and
stimulating classroom environment.
Designed to inspire and encourage
optimum creativity, the classroom has
moveable blocks for desks and chairs as
well as a beautiful chalk mural as a
blackboard, painted by local artist, David
Edwards. “All research on what skills our
world needs today underlines creativity,
critical thinking, collaboration, citizenship,
ethical education and communication as
top priority skills. So we, as educators,
must keep asking ourselves: how effectively
are we preparing our school-leavers for the
world they are entering?”
Merrifield's goal is to equip students with
these 21st century skills and the iCreate
classroom experience does just that,
covering skills in robotics, coding,
advanced automation, virtual reality,
artificial intelligence, practically advanced
lego work and brain games.
The weekly lessons are project-based,
requiring students to apply their skills and
knowledge on various subjects in an effort
to solve problems.
The lesson calls for collaboration,
strategising and thinking out the box.
“Through the medium of advanced
academic programmes and learning tools
such as iCreate, in addition to the
programmes we currently use in our
curriculum such as Singapore Maths, iPad
apps, Thrass, online Mathletics and Cami,
our prep learners are extended in
developing critical thinking skills and
competencies,” Merrifield College Executive
Head, Dr Guy Hartley, said.
Though many schools are starting to
incorporate similar 21st century skills based
lessons into their curriculum, the iCreate
programme is the first of its kind in the
Eastern Cape, with Kingswood school
working closely with Bosse' in developing
their own programme, ICE.
“It has been an exciting, but challenging
process. We've received so much positive
feedback from the children and the parents
so it has been rewarding,” Bosse said.
The school aims to eventually implement
it into the high school curriculum.
THINKING OUT OF THE BOX: iCreate (innovation, creativity, research, engineering, arts, technology and
entrepreneurship) has been launched at Merrifield this year to equip Prep School students with key 21st Century
skills
for Meals on Wheels
SIVENATHI GOSA
MEALS on Wheels Community Services in Buffalo
City is in dire need of financial assistance.
The organisation was established in July 1964
by the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and the East
London branch was the first to operate in the
countr y.
Secretary Asthon Botha said Meals on Wheels
was a community service outreach programme
that helped the elderly, poor and physically
challenged people of the Buffalo City Metropolitan
Municipality and surrounding areas.
“We provide cooked meals, soup, clothing and
whatever else that we can. We have a community
participate in various activities to keep them
healthy. We also deliver meals door to door in the
surrounding suburbs of East London. These meals
are prepared, cooked, packed into our vans and
are given to those who are in need. Meal deliveries
are done on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.”
Meals were made as nutritious as possible as
many of the meal recipients were in poor health.
“Once a week we try to give out a little treat,
which is always appreciated, especially by those
who cannot afford such luxuries. These treats can
be in the form of puddings, cakes, yoghurts, juice
or fruit.”
In order for Meals on Wheels Community
Services to help more people, they have 32 soup
kitchens situated at various points that operate on
a daily basis in the rural areas. People receive a
serving of warm soup with meat, vegetables and
some bread.
“We have people from the various areas who
reach out to us for help, informing us of the dire
conditions in which many vulnerable people live.
We deliver up to 1000 meals on a weekly basis; so
in total we feed 40000 people monthly.”
Botha said Meals on Wheels had recently lost a
major donor who funded the protein contributions
to the meal.
Fundraising is done through hosted events, with
a charity shop on the premises.
Botha urged the community to assist as the
number of people in need of a meal were growing
with about R60000 a month spent on food,
electricity and petrol.
Captain takes charge
to help granny, baby
SIVENATHI GOSA
THE plight of a grandmother
clutching her three-month-old
grandchild at the Mdantsane
police station recently,
touched Management
Information Centre (MIC) head
Captain Mariana Swanepoel
so much that she raised
money to help the family.
Swanepoel also dug into her
own pockets to help the
80-year-old woman, who
wants to remain anonymous,
after she came to the station
to seek help.
Mdantsane cluster
spokesman Captain Nkosikho
Mzuku said Swanepoel met
the elderly woman at the
charge office at the police
station where she came to
share the difficulties she was
fa c i n g .
The grandmother claimed
that her 37-year-old daughter
had left the child in her care
without providing for any
needs, and had instead gone
to the shebeen.
Swanepoel investigated and
was shocked to find out that
the family could not afford to
buy their own groceries.
She contacted her friends
for assistance and together
they raised money to buy
groceries and to supply in the
baby's needs.
“If there is one thing that
makes me happy about being
a police official, it is to make a
difference in people’s lives
without wanting to be thanked
for it. They live in extreme
poverty and I saw it fitting in
giving back to the
communit y.”
Swanepoel said they were
hoping to be able to help the
family for the next three
GIVING BACK: Captain
Mariana Swanepoel
raised money to help a
needy family
months as the family was
living in extreme poverty.
“The family depends on the
child support grant of the
12-year-old girl and that of the
granny, which barely covers
their basic needs.”
Mzuku said, “I think what
Swanepoel did, was out of
goodwill and inspiring. As the
SAPS, we make sure that the
community members are safe
and live in a conducive
environment.
“The grandmother was
relieved and grateful for what
the police did.”

Eco club does it brick by brick
MADELEINE CHAPUT
THE Merrifield Primary School
Eco Club have been hard at
work perfecting and
popularising the
environmentally friendly art of
eco bricking in East London.
Eco-bricks are constructed
out of recycled two-litre
plastic bottles and all sorts of
bits of plastics, chip packets
and food wrappers. The litter
is stuffed inside the bottles in
a compact manner to create
hardy building bricks.
The club was approached
by African Angels founder Lou
Billet last year. They were
asked to join the African
Angels Independent School in
making and collecting as
many eco-bricks as possible.
“Last year our main theme
was ocean pollution and the
effects of single-use plastics
on the ocean's ecosystems
and we thought this was a
great was of reducing the
amount of plastic waste that
reaches our oceans,”
Merrifield Eco Club head
teacher Chaylene Bachar said.
The school focused on the
global issue, running various
local projects, including
beach clean-ups and
challenging the pupils and
their families to give up four
single-use plastics.
Eco-bricking, however, soon
became a go-to trend.
“The eco-brick project has
by far been our most popular
project as the Eco Club.
People are seeing how much
FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: Merrifield Primary School Eco Club members with head teacher
Chaylene Bachar, front centrefront. The bottles, stuffed with compressed plastic waste, are
sculpture to be built on the school grounds
Picture: MADELEINE CHAPUT
plastic they use and it
inspires others to become
involved and start
eco-bricking too.”
Apart from reducing the
amount of trash that reaches
the oceans, eco-bricks are
also highly insulating and
water- and fire-proof. The
compressed plastic waste
does not disintegrate and
provides hardy support,
similar to normal building
bricks, but at almost no cost.
During the course of last
year, the Merrifield Eco Club,
along with various members'
families, managed to collect 110
eco-bricks to be used to build a
wall for the Chintsa East
Community Learning Centre.
The centre, which is a
container-based book
exchange and computer hub
located in the middle of the
Chintsa East location, opened
in October last year.
As a joint initiative between
African Angels, Friends of
Chintsa, the Chintsa East
community, Express
Petroleum and Great Kei
Municipality, the centre aims
to provide free internet access
to residents, as well as digital
literacy training, online maths
practice and mentoring,
assisting with accessing
matric re-writes, and more.
“We're hoping to find an
organisation we can team up
with to continue eco-bricking
and make it an on-going
project within the school, and
eventually throughout the
cit y,” Bachar said.
Merrifield has
commissioned Grade 11 art
pupils Alex Murray to design
and create a sculpture out of
the eco-bricks collected at
Merrifield this year. The
structure will be built
completely out of eco bricks
on the school grounds in the
hopes of creating awareness
about the negative
environmental effects of
single-use plastics and other
waste on the oceans.
Merrifield School is a
collection point for eco-bricks
and encourages all to keep
making them and bring them
to the school. “There's a huge
opportunity for collaboration
here and I hope we can get
everyone on board in an effort
to reduce the amount of trash
in the world,” Bachar said.
If anyone has any
suggestions or knows of any
organisations or projects
making use of eco-bricks,
please contact Bachar at
Soccer awards for two schools
Desmond Coetzee
TWO local schools have reaped
the fruits of their hard work,
dedication and commitment to
sport after they were handed
soccer gear, balls and the winning
trophies of the Carlos Soccer
Youth Development Academy
(CSYDA) annual tournament
during a special assembly at the
schools.
The tournament which has
become a highlight of the Buffalo
City Metro (BCM) region was held
at the Dale College Sports
Grounds in King William’s Town
last year.
Thembalabantu High School
emerged the champs of the U17
category after their 1-0 win against
Dale College and Bhisho Primary
had to dig deep to win their final
match by the same margin in the
U13 section against Tshatshu
Primar y.
Addressing the assembly at
both schools, CSYDA director Eric
Carlos Mtshamba encouraged the
World Read Aloud Day celebrated in King
By Desmond Coetzee
LOCAL libraries in King William’s Town
and surrounding areas have in line with
World Read Aloud Day hosted sessions
while others visited learning
institutions to comply with the vision in
celebrating the day last week.
World Read Aloud Day is an
advocacy day that asserts the right to
read and write for all people and has
reached people in 65 countries.
The day is hosted annually on
February 1 and encourage as many
people as possible to read out loud to
children.
King Library staff members, led by
Zolani Gqibitole, visited the King
William’s Town Primary School and
entertained pupils of two Grade 3
classes by reading stories, as well as
asking the children to read to them.
“The kids really enjoyed our visit and
the educator wanted us to ‘adopt’ them
as she loved what we were doing in
encouraging the kids to read,” Gqibitole
said.
Schornville librarian Faith Zilimbola
visited the King William’s Town Child
and Youth Care Centre where she and
staff members read stories and
performed items of song before
handing out yoghurt to the orphans.
learners to be successful in life.
“I had only two things that kept
me grounded namely my books
and my love and passion for
fo ot b a l l , ” Mtshamba said.
“It is all about working hard and
giving it your best.”
He said he lived in a backyard
with his mother having been a
domestic worker.
“I started playing soccer and
became a professional player at
the age of 16.
“You must never allow your
circumstances to deter your future
and being an excuse for your
success as we are living in a
democratic country where there
are so many opportunities for
ever yone.”
His colleague and retired Dale
College teacher Pastor Sonwabo
Matwa emphasised the
importance of focusing first on
getting a good education before
considering sport a future.
“Focus on your education first
before dreaming of becoming a
sport star as it is a career which is
“The kids had fun, enjoyed the story
we read to them and loved the song we
performed as they also joined in
singing along during our one-hour visit
to the centre,” Zilimbola said.
Berlin Library was visited by Child’s
World Primary and Noah’s Ark
Playschool where a total of 51 pupils
were encouraged to read.
Breidbach Library hosted the Happy
Hearts Playground pupils with Librarian
Debbie Christian reading the story of
the Three Little Pigs and with staff
members Kelvin de Lange acting as the
wolf, Simphiwe Banesi as one of the
pigs and educators Lisha Lawrence and
Amber Botha the other two pigs.
Two pupils – Caylee Hill and
Shay-Leigh Cuddumbey – star ted
crying as the vicious wolf was chasing
the first little pig and were both
comforted by Christian as the story was
further told.
All the kids were than handed a
“Proud to read aloud” paper made
medal and snacks before leaving the
librar y.
Christian said reading, storytelling
and sharing stories at home, in the
classrooms or just as a group together
has the power to uplift the country.
However it’s a practice that needs to be
repeated on a regular basis.
short lived,” Matwa said.
“An injury can jeopardise your
entire career if you have no
e d u c at i o n . ”
Thembalabantu teacher, soccer
coach and CSYDA executive
member Makhonza Masiza said,
“We have been trying hard for the
past four years to win this trophy
and now that we’ve got it, it will
be difficult for any school to take
it away from us.”
Principal Koko Funda
commended CSYDA for their
involvement with the development
of football at his school.
“We would like to extend a word
of gratitude to CSYDA for the
wonderful job they have been
doing over the years and continue
doing in producing stars for our
school.”
Bhisho Primary principal Doctor
Velela Kalipa said: “I am ecstatic
about the achievement as our
team did well in scooping these
awards. Two pupils were identified
to further their development in the
sport at the CSYDA.”
READING MATTERS: Happy Hearts Playground staff members and pupils had a
great time at the World Read Aloud Day at the Breidbach Library last week
Picture: DESMOND COETZEE
“It is great importance for parents to
The Valentine’s legend
YOU know that
Va l e n t i n e ’s Day is a
recognition and
celebration of the power
of romantic love ...but
do you know why this is
so?
According to the
website w w w. h i s t o r y. c o m ,
there are several
legends around the day,
including one that
Valentine was a priest
who served during the
third century in Rome
and who disobeyed a
decree by Emperor
Claudius II decided that
single men made better
soldiers than those with
wives and families and
thus outlawed marriage
for young men.
Valentine continued
to perform marriages
for young lovers in
secret and he was
subsequently put to
d e at h .
Another legend is
that Valentine may have
been killed for trying to
help Christians escape
from Roman prisons,
where they were beaten
and tortured.
The third belief is that
Valentine was in prison
when he fell in love with
a young girl during his
confinement and wrote
her a letter – signed
“From your Valentine”.
Va l e n t i n e ’s Day
continues to remain
popular throughout the
world – we hope that
yours is a day filled with
love. - Go! reporter
EL fencing
trio shines
at nationals
MADELEINE CHAPUT
THE Buffalo Fencing Club's Paola
Signorile won her first bronze medal
in the U15 division at the South
African Junior Fencing National
Championships in Cape Town last
w e e ke n d .
Taking third place nationally,
the14-year-old Clarendon High
School pupil, now qualifies for the
Limpopo Open competition in March.
“A highlight of this trip was
definitely seeing Paola being
congratulated by the South African
President of Fencing,” B u f fa l o
Fencing Club coach, Pearl Signorile,
said.
Newbie Club fencer and Stirling
Primary School head boy, Matthew
Malan, who attended his first
National Fencing competition last
weekend, achieved third place in the
first round in the U13 division.
After only a year of training,
Matthew bagged 12th place
nationally in the U13 division.
“Matthew has not been fencing for
long, but he is such a strong fighter
and he has potential,” Signorile said.
Also joining them at the nationals
for her first time, was Clarendon
High School grade 9 pupil, Kayleigh
Hiscock, who, in spite of a sprained
left hand, was able to make it to the
top 20 nationally in the U17 division.
“Kayleigh sprained her hand a
while ago and it started hurting
again before we left for nationals.
We strapped it, but she really needs
to rest it now. I am proud of her for
still going out there and doing her
best ,” Signorile said.
The fencers competed against
fencers from all over South Africa,
with just over 200 entrants across
the various age groups.
The club, which has grown since
its inception in February last year,
now has nine members.
It’s Merrifield Mile time again
TARALYN MCLEAN
IT’S Merrifield Mile time again!
Swimmers and spectators can
look forward to fun in the water
at Wriggleswade Dam on March
4 for the 16th edition of the
annual Merrifield Mile, powered
by feature sponsor Nedbank.
A fourth event has been
added to the day’s proceedings
– the TerraForce 250m – in
addition to the usual 1.6km
swim, a 500m dash and a fun
Spur Splash for swimmers aged
eight years and younger.
The Merrifield Mile is a
marketing event for Merrifield
Prep School and College which
celebrates its 21st year of
existence this year.
It’s always a great day out for
the family on the banks of the
beautiful Wriggleswade Dam,
and this year looks set to be
more festive than ever.
“We have food stalls galore,
face painting, music along the
banks and fantastic camping
facilities for those wanting to
make a weekend of it,”
Merrifield marketing manager
and Mile organiser Tracey
Mangold said.
“The TerraForce 250m, for
children aged eight years and
older, adds that extra element of
fun and includes even more
swimmers of all levels, and a
real highlight will be the flyover
before the start of the day’s
proceedings by Border Aviation
p i l ot s . ”
Entries are open for all four
events at Merrifield Prep School
and College, Sportsmans
Warehouse and Cycle HQ, or
enter online at
w w w. m e r r i f i e l d m i l e . c o . z a
“I am very proud of Merrifield
School, to be able to host an
event of this nature. The Mile
has grown from a vision 16 years
ago to an event of about 1000
swimmers and 4000
s p e c t at o r s , ” she said.
“Our dream to grow the Mile
has been made possible by the
support from our team of
sponsors and the involvement of
the Border community.”
As the Mile has grown in
prominence on the region’s
sporting calendar, so too has the
school blossomed since opening
in 1997, becoming the region’s
leading independent school
renowned in particular for its
nurturing ethos and academic
excellence.
“Over the years, the Merrifield
Mile has grown in stature to
become a key event on the
public sporting programme in
the region with the capacity to
attract leading corporates, such
as Nedbank, as its feature
s p o n s o r, ” Merrifield executive
head Dr Guy Hartley said.
“This growth is in direct
correlation to the developing
reputation of Merrifield
Preparatory School and College
as the leading independent
educational provider of primary
and secondary schooling in the
area.
“For the school to host such a
celebrated event is indicative of
its own professionalism and
organisational strength as an
institution. Merrifield is indeed
proud to host one of the major
events on the region’s sporting
and recreational calendar.”
Geared for Great Kei Trek
MADELEINE CHAPUT
AFTER great excitement and anticipation, the Great
Kei Trek was officially launched in East London last
T h u r s d ay.
Over a festive meet-up at Country Bumpkin,
organiser Rob Jackson from the Leverage Corporation
and his local team proudly introduced the three-day
Mountain Bike experience.
The stage race is set to take place from April 28 to
30 and will cover 260km, starting in Komani. The
two-rider team race will see bikers meander through
some of the Eastern Cape’s forgotten gems including
Old Thomas River, the Stutterheim forests and Great
Kei River Valley, before ending in Morgan’s Bay.
“This area is one of the most ignored parts of our
country, but it is beautiful and we’re hoping to bring
as many people to this area as we can,” said
Jackson, who grew up in Komani.
Focussing on the enjoyment of the ride and the
area, the race will not be timed, with the emphasis on
having fun.
“I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long
time and I’m so glad that Rob and the Leverage
Corporation have the same ambitions for this area,”
said route planner and Stutterheim resident, Dean
Sheard.
Following the tradition of creating top-class and
high quality events, The Leverage Corporation
promises that this will be a race like no other.
Riders are in for a true Eastern Cape experience as
various local farm owners along the route have
generously offered access through their land.
Cycling along some of the old cattle and sheep
passages that farmers used in the first half of the
