POUR L’ AMOUR 

In a speech given by Prince Philip on 

his 10 th anniversary to Queen Elizabeth, 

he spoke about the depth of their 10-year 

relationship and how you had to “take the 

rough with the smooth” because “down there 

in the rough, in the long reeds of difficulty and 

pain, that is where you find the treasure.” He ended the speech by referring to the Queen of England as 

“mon petit chou”, which is French for sweetheart—a term of endearment that I found delightfully 

charming. I watched this episode in the current airing of The Crown on Netflix and I felt as if 

I was watching history repeat itself. By that, I am reflecting on how 60 years down 

the line, time is still the biggest test of love. The apps we use today to find “love”, 

while immediate, are so different to the acts of courtship and seduction in the past. 

What you have now is the fleeting anxiousness of lust, the carnal immediacy of desire, 

the desperation of want—all heightened with a shrill “ping” that appears on our iPhone. True, 

these are all qualities we associate with love-making—but they are really just one side to the many 

levels and layers to uncover what true love is. Our cover model this month, Victoria Secret’s Angel, 

Sara Sampaio, embodies lust, desire and want. You want to be her or you want to be with her. 

But delving into her story on page 126, 26-year-old Sampaio is actually an old-fashioned girl at 

heart—quite different from the sexy siren you see peering from the cover. But oftentimes, 

our true selves are the opposite of what we portray in public. Friedemann Vogel, the 

German ballet dancer featured on page 136, is the embodiment of masculinity. Yet the 

softness with which he caresses spring’s dramatic coats, with every muscled sinew in sight, 

attests to his balance of male and female; yin and yang. We can learn a lot from Vogel’s sense 

of harmony, which I strive to bring to my relationships. I talk about my memorable “love guru” 

session on page 72, and delve into horoscopes, feng shui and the cosmos. Back down on this mortal 

plane, you can take a leaf out of our love guide on page 52, which is the definitive edit of all the 

must-have addresses to make that date night extra special. You can never go wrong with 

indulgent spa treats—the cream of the crop are listed in our annual Spa Awards on 

page 89. One piece of advice: Ditch the apps for a moment and return to 

the days of eye contact, sparkling repartee and a bottle of bubbly. 

A little champagne never hurt anyone.

Speaking to 

fashion scribes post-show 

at the Tennis Club de Paris, Phoebe 

Philo tossed around words such as “joy” and 

“celebration” while explaining her desire to spread 

love and optimism at Céline this season. Earlier, she had 

recreated that warm and fuzzy feeling of sitting around a 

bonfire via a Smiljan Radic-designed set that resembled a 

gigantic tent, before huddling her guests together on benches 

covered with sleeping bags. With everyone in such close proximity 

and Mary J. Blige crooning “You’re All I Need to Get By” over the 

speakers, Philo rolled out a collection that delivered on the sartorial— 

and emotional—front. Double-layered trench coats were installed with 

hems that looped dramatically inwards; cropped boxy jackets came 

with generously-cut pleated pants; oversized polo t-shirts peeked 

from under masculine vests; feathers fluttered and fringes 

danced on dresses… She ensured a display of fashion that 

filled every inch of the body with good vibes. Now into 

the final stretch of her tenure, Philo’s Midas touch 

will be missed once she presents her 

last Céline collection in March for 

fall/winter 2018.

designs. “Everyone paid homage to Dapper Dan, but no one 

ever paid him,” said Dapper Dan in a statement. “The people 

have spoken and Gucci has listened.” Spread over 4,700sqft, 

the new studio atelier will allow Dapper Dan to customise pieces 

for clients using Gucci’s wide range of fabrics and hardware.

Kate Spade New York marks 25 years of fashion 

with an epic journey across America 

What’s your favourite piece from the collection? 

I think one of my favourite pieces in terms of handbags is 

the Sam bag. As it’s our 25 th anniversary, we’ve brought the 

Sam bag back but it’s slightly refreshed. So you’ll see it in 

many different iterations from our classic nylon with a little 

new twist, all the way through to wicker. It’s really an 

exploration of where we’ve been and where we’re going. 

You’ll meet our alligator wicker bag, which is going 

to be a lot of fun later, but really, it’s about the 

Sam bag in celebration of this 25 th anniversary. 

Tucked away in one corner of New York’s Grand Central 

Terminal is the Oyster Bar, a 105-year-old dining 

institution famous for its fresh and delectable seafood. 

The 440-seater’s gently curving marble colum mns 

have witnessed many a feast both grand and humbl mble, 

but this morning, its interiors are covered with 

lush green foliage. Even the crisp clink of cutlery and wine glasses 

has been replaced by the boisterous strains of music 

from a marching band. 

“It’s our 25 th anniversary so we’re kicking off 

with this joyous road trip across America,” explains 

Deborah Lloyd, the creative force steering the quirky 

womenswear label for the past decade. “What can 

be more of a perfect place to start than New York’s 

most famous railway station and this little gem? It’s 

really nice to introduce people to this place and it’s 

got the spirit of what the collection’s about.” 

Commuters in business suits have been replaced with models happily 

milling inside the restaurant dressed in Kate Spade New York’s spring/ 

summer 2018 collection. Regarding her last collection for the brand, Lloyd 

talks about flirty dresses, sporty parkas, timeless style and paying homage 

to a city where everything’s a celebration.

Did you and your team have to update 

the design much? 

It’s funny [when] you look at something 

and think: “Oh, it’s going to be timeless,” 

because nothing is timeless. We had to look 

at everything from the inside out because the 

ways bags are manufactured then and now are 

different. You have to look at proportion,

manufacturing, finish, raw materials… So everything 

was restudied again. Even though it sort of looks the 

same, it feels modern and updated. We did tweak 

the labelling on the outside—we’ve gone loud and 

proud with a beautiful, slightly bigger logo on the 

nylon that looks very fresh. 

This is a brand that speaks to 16- and 60-yearolds. 

Why is it so? 

I think Kate Spade New York really embraces 

femininity and the different facets of women. It’s very inclusive. We’re a very 

welcoming brand with colour, wit and whimsy. Women love Kate Spade 

because it makes them smile. It’s a little bit of a bright spot in their day. By 

offering everything, from handbags to ready-to-wear to jewellery to shoes, 

you talk to many women.

Tell us more about the new collection. 

The collection’s called “Southern Charm”, and it’s inspired by New Orleans. 

It’s the first stop of our American tour. It’s an amazing city with so much to 

offer, from the Garden Districts to the magnolia trees, gorgeous Spanish 

mansions to the French quarters where jazz and the atmosphere make 

everything a party. It really brought the collection to life. 

Drawing parallels from the train station, how would you describe 

your journey with the brand? 

It’s been an incredible journey so far. I love the fact that this is also my 

celebration! It’s come a long way, but I feel that as a brand, we’ve just hit our 

stride. There’s so much more to do. It’s really exciting. But it’s nice to hit this 

milestone and say, “We’ve made it here. Where are we going next?” ■

In his search for the meaning of life, Kenneth Goh 

narrows it all down to 

matters of the heart... 

And a little magic 

in the stars 

On a recent trip to the Maldives, I had 

the chance to experience a special “love guru” 

session with a visiting spiritual healer. I’ve been with 

my partner for over a decade and thought this might give 

us new perspectives and insights into our relationship. My 

partner was very sceptical, and when the healer visited our villa, 

asking for drawn curtains and lit candles, alarm bells started to ring. 

Still we played along, down to the humming mantras being played on 

her iPad. The session started with us sitting cross-legged and looking into 

each other’s eyes. We prayed hard we wouldn’t laugh as she told us to imagine 

that we each had a flower in our own hearts with a light emanating from the 

centre into each other’s hearts. Then, we had to place one hand on our heart 

and the other on each other’s heart. My partner was then asked to climb onto 

my lap, our ears pressed side by side, and hum, so that our souls could hear 

the resonance of our love and open our chakras (all I could think about was 

the worsening pins and needles in my right leg, but I digress). All the while 

we were tasked with stroking and touching parts of each other’s face and 

body. I kept imagining an ugly pimple on the side of my face, and when 

roaming fingers started stroking my cheeks, the first thought wasn’t “That’s 

so soothing” but rather, “Have you washed your hands with disinfectant?” 

The effect was nothing short of an Absolutely Fabulous moment—I could 

just imagine Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley as Edina and Patsy 

having a “love prayer” session; mini cymbals clinking, candles ablaze 

and the air filled with the scent of incense smoke. 

Needless to say, the session was marvellous for amusing afterdinner 

conversation. Have you ever been tasked to look into 

your partner’s eyes to see their soul? I thought not.

for living their life according to the stars—astrology is as integral 

to the team’s survival as water and air. If there’s any mishap, we 

put it all down to Mercury being in retrograde. Even when we moved 

into our new offices, we went through a complete feng shui process that 

included rolling a pineapple into the premises to ensure good fortune. 

Recently, there was a tarot card reader at a Dior event—tarot cards featured 

prominently in its cruise collection, after all—and true to tradition, my team 

was first in line, asking all sorts of questions. But somehow, it all boiled down 

to the one topic that mattered most: Love. 

I remember meeting the famed astrologer, Susan Miller, in New York 

almost 10 years ago. I was with Senior Fashion Editor, Windy Aulia. To him, 

a personal audience with Miller is the equivalent of winning Willy Wonka’s 

Golden Ticket in real life. While a love guru and tarot cards weren’t able 

to give me serious insights into my relationship, would Miller be able to 

help? I turned to the Astrology Zone website and this was Miller’s 

summary for Leo that month: “You love to be in love. You love the 

thrill of the chase, the candlelit dinners, the romantic text messages, 

and tender moments together. You are usually jovial and in high 

spirits—this month, you seem uncharacteristically serious. This 

can be a good sign, for you and your sweetheart may be getting 

ready to wed and discussing your future together.” 

Wow! That’s news to me indeed. Sweetheart, are you 

reading this? If all goes as Miller said, there might be 

bells ringing and champagne glasses clinking well 

into 2018. Perhaps the love guru did open some

The Rocky Buttes Movie Ranch is a panoramic 

desertscape east of Lancaster, California. Here, the majestic arid 

land stretches as far as the eye can see, dotted with Joshua trees 

that stand resilient among dusty boulders. Together with the crush 

of sand and gravel under the feet, the howl of the wind washes 

over the mind and body like waves from a discordant tune. The 

effect is both invigorating and humbling all at once. 

Staring pensively into the distance, top model Sara Sampaio 

is soaking up the energy of the place. Her head is wrapped in 

vintage, gauzy scarves and she is dressed in threads that resemble 

finds from a nomad’s cherished stash. From afar, Sampaio’s regal 

and proud stature is akin to a desert princess surveying the grandeur 

of her kingdom. 

This otherworldly landscape cannot be further removed from 

Matosinhos, a coastal municipality in Portugal. This is where the 

26-year-old head-turner spent her formative years in the warm 

embrace of her family, friends and the salty sea air. “It was such a 

great place to grow up in. We spent all summer on the beach and 

surfing. Taking walks by the beach is my favourite thing to do. 

There’s something about the ocean that is so special and calming,” 

Sampaio recalls. “Porto (Matosinhos’s more famous neighbour) 

has this laidback feeling to it. Their people are strong-minded, but 

we’re more go-getters.” 

That streak is definitely evident in Sampaio, who launched 

her modelling career after winning a Pantene competition at age 

16. For clinching top honours, Sampaio appeared in a TV 

commercial for the brand. Despite the enormity of the careermaking 

gig, Sampaio’s parents were insistent their daughter did 

not neglect her studies. “The only thing they expected from me 

was that I kept my grades up. And that was a fair demand,” she 

remembers. “They were my biggest supporters from the moment 

I had the chance to go international after finishing school. They 

understood that this was a one-time opportunity. They also knew 

the worse-case scenario was me going back to the books.” 

There wasn’t any worse-case scenario to worry about. Aided 

by good work ethics (plus a little sprinkling of luck), Sampaio’s 

career has been on a steady ascent. In the years since her freshfaced 

beauty was broadcasted to millions of households across 

her home country, the five-time winner of “Best Female 

Model” at the Portuguese Golden Globes has modelled for 

the likes of Balmain, Dolce&Gabbana, Marc Jacobs and Miu Miu. 

In 2013, the pouty-lipped clotheshorse landed the coveted spot 

on the Victoria’s Secret roster. Sampaio knew the significance 

of the Victoria’s Secret job—she faced rejection for two years 

before hitting the glitter-covered runway. Eventually, her hard 

work and presence proved formidable, and she earned her Angel 

wings in just two seasons: “Being put in the same list with Angels 

past and present, such as Gisele Bündchen and Adriana Lima, still 

feels quite surreal.” 

Sampaio has brought the same determination into her romantic 

life. “When I love, I’m there for the long haul. I don’t fall in love 

easily, nor have I had many boyfriends. I don’t get into a relationship 

just for the sake of it,” she observes. “Love makes you a better 

version of yourself. And I’m in it for the long run.” 

She is currently dating British investor Oliver Ripley, and the 

lovebirds have been spotted hand-in-hand on red carpets in Cannes, 

frolicking on board a yacht in Ibiza and most recently, ushering 

the New Year in Sydney. Privacy is a valuable commodity in this 

social media-driven era, where smartphones are on-hand to 

document everything. With more than six million followers on 

Instagram, Sampaio has managed to walk the delicate tightrope 

of engaging her fans with snapshots from her jet-set life, while 

maintaining privacy at the same time. “I share a lot of my life, but 

I also like to keep certain things to myself. A relationship is just 

between two people anyway. It feels nice to have something that 

is just yours. That way, it doesn’t give much room for people to 

give opinions on your relationship.” 

More importantly, Sampaio understands the influence 

she wields in the online sphere. If there’s a silver lining to be found 

in this digital age, it’s how hashtags have become vessels for change, 

with #lovewins, #metoo and #myjobshouldnotincludeabuse 

leading the charge in 2017. Sampaio has spoken out against 

harassment and abuse in the modelling industry, bravely detailing 

her experience with a French men’s magazine in an Instagram 

post that has since garnered her an overwhelming amount of 

support. “It has always been important to speak out. Now we have 

a direct platform to do so. You have a direct line to millions of 

people who care, support and listen,” she says. “And that’s powerful.” 

On what more can be done, especially when it comes to 

issues such as equality and women’s rights, Sampaio offers: 

“Accountability is the most important. Seeing people being held 

accountable for their actions has been amazing and it’s going to 

start the change the industry really needs. I hope it will come to 

the fashion industry because we are desperately in need of it.” 

Love comes in all forms, too, and Sampaio hopes to contribute 

to the discussion on embracing diversity and celebrating differences 

by advocating kindness. “The next time you think about calling 

someone fat, skinny or whatever, just stop. Compliment them 

instead,” Sampaio says. “No one is perfect. And that’s what makes 

us special and beautiful.” ■

Friedemann Vogel is a world-renowned ballet 

dancer who has performed in front of 

thousands, but today his only audience is a 

camera that’s capturing his every graceful 

movement. In town to reprise the titular role 

of Romeo in the John Cranko-choreographed 

re-telling of Romeo & Juliet, Vogel’s talent shines through even when 

he’s offstage. As he prances around the photo studio like a bird 

soaring through the skies, the ends of a trench coat trailing in his 

wake, every elegantly-executed pointe, pirouette and flex of his 

sinewy muscles is mesmerising to watch. 

With his handsome good looks and piercing gaze, Vogel was 

destined to be a dancer. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, the 38-yearold 

comes from a family of five brothers whose passion for art 

flows through their veins. “It was very natural for me to pursue 

something in the field. One of my brothers is also a dancer, so my 

parents didn’t find it unusual at all that I’d eventually walk the same 

path,” he adds. 

After a childhood spent putting up impromptu performances 

for his parents, the young Vogel showed so much promise that he 

landed a coveted spot in the Princess Grace Academy of Classical 

Dance in Monte Carlo. Since then, Vogel has taken home top 

accolades at many prestigious international ballet competitions 

such as the Prix de Lausanne and the Prix de Luxembourg. His 

biggest achievement thus far? His induction into the famous 

Stuttgart Ballet in 1998, where he proved his mettle and was 

promoted to principal dancer in just a few short years. 

What is it that you love most about ballet? 

I like how ballet allows you to move and express yourself with 

your body. I was a child who had to constantly move. I couldn’t 

sit still in one place to read. If you do ballet every day professionally, 

it becomes something like bread and water. When I’m on holiday 

for two weeks and I don’t do ballet, I find my body needing it. 

The body hurts more when I stop than when I train. 

Can you remember the first time you stood on stage? 

When I was little, I’d wear my costumes and put on many shows 

for my parents. However, the first time I took to the stage was in 

ballet school. I was super excited to finally get the opportunity to 

perform. When you’re a child, you don’t think about the 

consequences—you just go out there and have fun. I always try to 

remember that and think about the essence of dance. The best 

performances I’ve had were the ones where I dove right into the 

music. Most of the time, the music comes from a live orchestra. 

When everything comes together, it’s like a miracle; an addiction. 

That’s the hard part if you were to stop ballet; when the time comes, 

that’s the part that dancers will miss. 

What role do you think dance plays in the world? 

I think it plays a very important role. I believe that everyone who 

wants to dance will find a way to do so. Professional or not, it 

doesn’t really matter because dance isn’t always about performing 

for other people. Dance is about self-expression and finding that 

connection. It is not bounded by language or geography. 

Do you think talent is born or can it be nurtured? 

Talent is something that cannot be described. I think it comes from 

a place of love. When you love something so much, you’re deeply 

into it. I believe that there’s a strong power somewhere that guides 

you. You have to be open-minded about where that takes you. 

What’s next for you? 

Besides continuing to dance, I want to support young dancers 

out there who don’t have the means to pursue their interests. 

My parents couldn’t afford the best education for me, but I was 

lucky I got a scholarship from my academy in Monte Carlo. As 

such, I have set up a foundation to support dancers, choreographers 

or anyone who wants to express themselves through dance. I 

want to give them the opportunity to chase their dreams—not 

just in ballet, but other dance scenes as well. It is so important for 

our culture. 

If a ballet performance was made about your life, what 

would it be like? 

There would be a lot of emotions in this performance, 

from happiness to self-doubt, and a lot of ups and downs. But 

you’ll never know where life takes you. I just hope it won’t be a 

dramatic ending! ■

How would you describe your 

identity as an artist? 

I usually just make what I want to 

make; [art] has always kind of saved 

me. Whenever I felt down in school, 

I would draw; I would make up 

stories and 

I loved doing that. Art for me, is a 

way for me to understand and express myself. 

What first made you pursue art? 

Art just came naturally to me. My mum told 

me I’ve been scribbling since I was about two 

years old. Since then, I’ve just been obsessed 

with it. It’s not that I’m pursuing something; 

it’s something that I just have to do. 

How have you evolved as an artist so far? 

I’ve always created art as a form of personal 

expression, but recently 

I’ve been able to work 

on commercial projects. 

So in that sense, it’s really 

been a challenge to figure out how I use art—not only 

to make just what I want, but what would work for the 

client as well. Taking on jobs professionally pushes me to 

create something different than what I normally would. 

I had planned on going to art school but it didn’t feel 

right for me. I didn’t feel like that was what I wanted 

to do with my life at the time. So I’ve been practising 

every day by myself. Artists recreate what they are 

inspired by every day—new people, new experiences— 

and are exposed to different types of art. So your style 

will change as well, inevitably. 

What are your key sources of inspiration? 

Experiences in life and also music. It could be the lyrics, 

sounds, song titles—simple, little things. When listening 

to music, it helps me think; it helps me create stories. 

Like if you listen to music and you close your eyes, 

you create an image to the song; that’s how I do it. 

What are you working on at the moment? 

I’m planning a solo exhibition in Japan and I’m working 

on some pretty big art projects, including a collaboration 

with a fashion brand.

Three theatrical maidens take 

the stage this month 

THE ART OF SATIRE 

From afar, Natee Utarit’s works are reminiscent of classical Western art. But upon closer look, 

the Thai artist’s masterpieces, which blur the line between photography and painting, are 

as modern as it gets—and coded with wide-ranging metaphors that address the satire of 

capitalism and its effects on local traditions. Co-presented by The Private Museum and Richard 

Koh Fine Art, “Optimism is Ridiculous: The Altarpieces” is his latest exhibition that channels 

the divine, the dead and the dictators in diverse ways, painted with the palette, contrast and 

finesse of a Renaissance artist. What makes this series, which he’s been working on since 2012, 

extra unique is that these 12 paintings form seven works of art—multiple panels that form a 

diptych, triptych or polytych that conjure up images of a grand house both haunted and holy.

Also getting the grand crustacean treatment is The Green Oven at Andaz Singapore, where hearty 

mac and cheese—with varying flavours of sharp, buttery and piquant—is baked to gooey perfection 

with sweet lobster chunks. Fancy something lighter? There are plump s callops grilled over an open fire at

Hamburg’s new Elbphilharmonie concert hall was transformed 

into the ultimate vision of loveliness when Karl Lagerfeld showed 

Chanel’s annual Métiers d’Art collection to the soothing strains of 

“La Paloma”. Paying tribute to the famous German port—which 

also happens to be Lagerfeld’s hometown—the designer put forth 

a 76-strong seafaring collection with “sailors” who walked past

HOUSE PARTY 

To announce its new location on Paragon’s ground floor 

(it has been a tenant on the mall’s second level for 15 years), 

Longchamp welcomed guests into the “Mademoiselle 

Longchamp” apartment, which was erected at Paragon’s 

atrium for the occasion. Styled in accordance to the 

architectural features of a Parisian abode—complete with 

French windows, plush furniture and gleaming marble 

surfaces decked with bold accessories, of course—the 

space played host to over 230 people including a bevy of 

personalities such as Rebecca Lim, Fiona Fussi, Andrea 

Chong and Aimee Cheng-Bradshaw. Guests spent the 

even ing acquainting themselves with the brand’s stylish 

wares, including the new collection of Mademoiselle 

Longchamp hobo bags, before heading over to 

Longchamp’s permanent in-store Personalisation Station 

to hot-stamp their initials on their purchases.

After Berlin, Beijing, Moscow and Tokyo, 

Max Mara’s “Coats!” exhibition headed to Seoul, 

where Dongdaemun Design Plaza played host to Korean 

celebrities and fashion lovers for the opening party of the 

travelling retrospective. As YoonA of Girls’ Generation 

fame descended the staircase of the Zaha Hadid-designed 

structure, the other stylish guests—mostly decked out in 

the brand’s iconic coats—wandered around the multimedia 

showcase. Selected designs pulled together from the 

House’s 60-plus-year archives were on display, including 

pieces by Max Mara alumni such as Karl Lagerfeld 

and Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro 

Hernandez. The exhibition also featured collaborative 

projects with local artists in the form of drawings, 

illustrations and videos, which added a Pop Art bent, 

a cause close to the heart of the Italian House.
