The new revolution
The electronic security industry is going
through the next phase of its evolution at the
moment and, more often than not, it seems
hardware development is not the trend
Talking to a number of people on my travels this month it
became quite obvious that the electronic security industry is
currently going through a bit of a change in its technology
development. What has been largely a hardware driven market in
the past (remember the banks and banks of surveillance cameras
at IFSEC in the past) we are seeing more emphasis being placed
on the development of software solutions.
The trend of the day was always easy to spot when looking at
the press releases that come in and the launches at events. Most
manufacturers follow a similar path and when a new buzzword or
idea comes in then, most of the time, they follow suit. The drive
to raise CCTV resolution for example or the introduction of Wi-Fi
enabled alarm systems come to mind. Recently we had the
announcements of apps for just about every product
manufacturer all within a fairly short time frame. Trends happen
because demand exists. Technology just for the sake of it is not a
long-term prospect worthy of financial backing.
So the chats I’ve been having around various subjects all seem
to be working their way around to the same topic; we’re now
working in a sector that is currently more software focused than it
is on the development of more hardware. Not that physical
products are no longer being launched, it’s just that the hardware
we’ve already got can do so much more with the development
and addition of new programs. Don’t think that’s true? Just look
at how many camera manufacturers will be talking about Deep
Learning or AI at this year’s shows. Just have a glance over the
new developments in analytics that make use of all of that extra
data being collected by modern cameras. And don’t forget the
smart systems that allow integration between different
technology disciplines including home automation, fire safety,
security and remote monitoring, all on one platform.
When updating a security system today it is no longer always
a case of instantly specifying new hardware, maybe the
technology is fine but there are, for example, new VMS platforms
that will enable the legacy products to do more for customers.
Like in the computer world, you don’t always need to upgrade the
PC, just update the software or install another program to do
what you want the system to do.
Maybe this is also why exhibition visitor demographics are
changing and why the seminar topics are more applications and
cyber related, talking more about the capabilities of new
software rather than new hardware developments.
Software is taking our industry to the next level in terms of
capabilities of the whole system and what can be achieved and
because of this, these are exciting times.
at a local level. We’re excited by the opportunity
that opening in Teesside presents as it allows
us to further extend our reach in the area while
bringing new jobs and opportunities as the
business grows and serves customers in the
region.”
Carl Leah, Teesside Branch Manager,
comments: “This is a fantastic opportunity to
extend our services in the region and to build a
team that is on hand to serve customers and
deal with maintenance or call-outs across the
SSAIB and FIA join forces to help
with fire and alarms certification
SSAIB has partnered up with the Fire Industry
Association (FIA) to help registered security
firms gain fire detection and alarms
certification.
The project is available for the next six
months and has been set up to aid firms that
want to become third-party certified for the
BAFE SP-203 scheme and support a growth in
delivering best practice in the fire industry.
Those firms that decide to apply will be
granted a twelve-month probationary
membership with the FIA, which will allow
them to have access to the FIA’s training. This
will, in turn, help them to prepare for their
SSAIB audit – as it will ensure that they know
what is required of them to meet the
requirements of the scheme and that they are
also working to the industry standard.
This initiative provides benefits for those
firms looking to branch out into fire detection
and alarms as SSAIB chief executive Alex
Carmichael says: “This is a great opportunity
for firms looking to branch out into fire
detection and alarms certification and I hope
that anyone interested goes ahead and applies
for the initiative – as the wealth of knowledge
that the FIA can pass on will definitely help
towards understanding what is needed to
meet the standards and gain certification.
“We look forward to working closely with
the FIA over the coming months and I’d like to
thank them for partnering up with us and
offering to help our firms increase their scope
of certification.”
FIA membership manager Chris Tilley was
also quick to point out the benefits of the
partnership, which has been born out of a
“long-standing friendship: “The FIA and SSAIB
have a long-standing friendship and – as a
result – we have been looking for ways in
which we can work together to improve the
services currently offered to SSAIB security
customers who are also engaged with fire
detection and alarms, but are not yet thirdparty
certified; with the overall aim of raising
the game across the industry.
“We hope SSAIB-registered firms will take
this opportunity to be part of something
bigger – as we all strive to raise the standards
and professionalism of the fire industry.”
NSI Code of Practice for CCTV installations
NCP 104 updated
The National Security Inspectorate (NSI) has launched a new
edition of its CCTV code of practice – for the design,
installation and maintenance of CCTV surveillance systems –
NCP 104 Issue 3.
This edition includes guidance on protecting systems from
cyber risks, and emphasises the importance of thoroughly
assessing customer security risks and requirements when
developing CCTV system design.
Customers buying CCTV surveillance systems designed,
installed and maintained to comply with this latest edition can
be assured of:
• security needs being fully assessed, documented and
agreed prior to any design work
• system design addressing agreed security needs,
usability and operating requirements including network
(cyber) security
• thorough validation and testing of the CCTV system
• appropriate user training
• fully documented maintenance requirements
The new NCP 104 provides installers with detailed
recommendations and guidance to be followed as part of
delivering a CCTV system design and ensures the
sustainability, functionality and effectiveness of a system.
Notable points for installers are that the Code:
• is in line with the latest standard BS EN 62676-4:2015,
(the current application guidelines for the use of video
surveillance systems in security applications), but simplifies
the process of system development and testing, by omitting
specific requirements regarding system grading and the use of
some specific image testing requirements
• introduces requirements for design areas such as
network (cyber) security, detectors, video analysis, audio and
cabling, that are not covered by in BS EN 62676-4 and also
covering current technologies and terminology
• stands alone from BS 8418 which relates to the
installation of remotely monitored detector activated CCTV
systems.
NSI’s Head of Technical Services, Tony Weeks said
“Customers can rely on installers working with the new Issue
3 of the NSI Code to fully document and understand their
requirements, so that CCTV system design is fit for purpose.
The ‘scale-ability’ of the Code means it can help deliver best
practice from the smallest to the most complex of
installations.”
The new edition supersedes NCP 104 Issue 2, which will be
withdrawn from use on 30 April 2019.
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks
talks to John Livermore,
ALL IP Programme Lead at
BT Consumer. BT
Consumer is the main retail division of
BT Group that provides fixed-line,
mobile, broadband and digital television to
consumers in the UK.
The media are reporting that BT Group are making the move to
Digital Voice. What does this mean?
BT is changing the way it provides telephone services to its UK
customers, moving from analogue to digital technology. BT intends for all
its customers to be using fully digital telephone services by 2025. A
digital phone service works using broadband. Customers will plug their
telephone into their broadband router instead of the faceplate on the wall
like they do today. Customer needs are changing and the analogue
equipment that powers telephone services today is ageing and
increasingly difficult to maintain. Today, telephone calls made over
landlines are pretty much the only form of communication that travel over
networks which have not been part of the digital revolution. The upgrade
to digital telephone services means that BT can offer its customers some
exciting new benefits that take advantage of the efficiency and flexibility
the latest technology brings. The reliability, trust and familiarity of today’s
existing telephone services will be maintained.
When will people start to see the changes?
BT will start to launch new digital telephone services from the start of
2018 with the aim of upgrading all its UK phone customers by the end of
2025.
What will this mean for the Electronic Fire & Security Industry?
The industry needs to be aware and prepared for the changes that are
happening. The main change is that the new digital telephone service will
run over broadband. DECT technology that is already largely in use today
will power phones, so extension wiring will no longer be required and any
additional telephone handsets in the home will just need a power supply.
Any customer across the UK can choose to upgrade to the new phone
services. BT wants to work with Installers to ensure customers with
alarms are identified so that the transition to digital is managed as
smoothly as possible.
What can the Electronic Fire & Security Industry do for non-IP
services they have today?
Initially an analogue adapter will be provided as part of the broadband
router to enable customers’ services to continue to work. BT will also
supply, on request, a voice reinjection lead and socket for customers that
need them (for example for those with extensions). This is a short-term
solution and we encourage all alarm companies to exploit the opportunity
to enable a much richer range of products and services.
How will we know if our products will work with the new
technology?
We’re opening a new test facility at Adastral Park near Ipswich in Spring
this year for Installers to come and test their equipment and identify how
the changes will affect them. It is also an opportunity to innovate to
provide new products and services that take advantage of the opportunity
that digital brings.
TEST
PRODUCT TEST
Dahua DH-IPC-HF8835FP
What’s in the box?
Box camera
Quick Start Guide
CD
The camera gives a
very high-resolution
image and has high
sensitivity
This is an 8MP (UHD) box style camera with
very high sensitivity and intelligent video
detection capabilities. It is promoted as a
Starlight+ camera.
For the purposes of testing it was supplied
with a 12MP rated 8.5mm fixed focal length
manual iris lens.
The most significant difference noted is that
due to the large format of the CMOS sensor used,
the lens mount is an M43 (Micro four thirds)
bayonet-style connection rather than the familiar
C or CS CCTV standard. The four thirds in the
mount type describes the 4/3” sensor type which
has a diagonal measurement of 21.6mm. Sensor
sizes are still related to the original diameter of
thermionic tube devices so do not follow the
convention used for display screens.
The casing has one top and two base located
¼” Whitworth thread mounting holes. Power is
less than 10.5W PoE or alternatively by 12v DC or
24v AC supply. Edge storage can be installed with
a Micro SD card of up to 128GB.
Getting started
With the camera connected to a suitable PoE
network point and the lens fitted it is necessary to
log in to the camera for setting up. DHCP is not
enabled by default. The quick start guide advises
that you use “ConfigTools.exe” from the supplied
CD to identify the camera’s IP address.
Unfortunately the file was supplied as a
compressed file titled:
General_Config_Tool_Eng_V.4.00.0.R.160310.7z.
From a security perspective, it is not good to have
files supplied that utilise a non-standard
compression format that depends on freeware
from the web. When extracted and run the
Configuration Tool was found to be very
disappointing; the “Publisher unknown” message
does not give confidence and then the lack of any
reference to Dahua within the programme or in
the 27-page Operation Manual suggest that this is
a third-party late inclusion. The actual operation
was found to be quite poor as it only detects
cameras on the PCs subnet rather than full
discovery although this is stated in the quick-start
documentation. It is also necessary to state the
start and end IP addresses to be scanned via a
Setting window that is not immediately obvious
when the program is first run.
Once connected via a Windows browser the full
camera settings are accessible, though there is
initially no live image capability. The Live window
prompts for a link to “install the plug-in”. On IE on
a Windows 8 or 10 PC this loads promptly, but for
Edge on a Windows 10 PC the link takes you to a
Google App Store Chrome NACL (Native Client)
page from where you can run the NACL app. This
opens a Web Service browser from where you can
reselect the IP address and after re-entering the
log-in details gives full access to the video image
and settings options. No detail on this process
was provided or available via the Dahua website
support area but with patience it is possible to
add a direct NACL Web Plug-in icon to the desktop
and this operated well.
The camera supports ONVIF protocols but best
results would likely be obtained with a Dahua
NVR or VMS.
Performance
The camera gives a very high-resolution image
and has high sensitivity. Specification data for
sensitivity is not very helpful as it is quoted as
being a minimum light level of 0.0005 Lux colour,
though this is based on a lens of F0.95 rather than
the F2.8 provided and using a shutter speed of
1/3 second which gives a fair amount of motion
blur. 1/30th of a second figure is given as 0.003
Lux colour and 0.002 Lux B&W. However, the
actual sensitivity is impressive if care is taken to
set the camera for the scene conditions and works
well below the human eye’s ability to resolve
objects in the dark.
Colour rendition is good, though slightly
desaturated but this can be increased using the
image settings.
Three video streams are available, Main
Stream can be set from its default 3840 x 2160
down to 1280 x 720 in 8 steps. Sub Stream 1 is
limited to 740 x 576 or 640 x 480 and Sub Stream
2 offers 1920 x 1080, 1280 x 720 or 704 x 576.
The Main Stream included a higher option of
4096 x 2776 pixels. This gave close to a 4:3
aspect ratio image enlarged from the 16:9 8MP
TEST
The camera is very
solidly built with a
metal case and good
thermal management
supporting a stated
operational and
storage range of -30°
to +60° C
NOTE: This PSI Product Test
was carried out by an
independent third party,
not editorial staff. The
manufacturer had no input in
the review or the final result
(continued from p14)
stated maximum resolution. It is possible that this
is a feature of the sensor that is not supported by
Dahua’s current recorders. The generic nature of
the operational manual does not explain such
anomalies.
There is no removable infrared cut filter at
switch-over to low light level, the camera depends
on its sensor’s performance and simply removes
all colour components from the image. The
analogue output maintains its colour subcarrier
burst signal to prevent colour noise. The A&E
specification document for the camera does
though state that “The Box camera shall offer a
mechanical day/night IR cut filter…” so this could
be a problem for tender response if quoted.
Playback from the local SD card shows a
Timeline that can be adjusted between 24, 2, 1
hour or 30 mins duration. General, Event, Alarm
and Manual recordings are colour differentiated.
Transport controls are simply Play/Pause, Stop,
Next Frame, Slow and Fast speed.
Video clips from the SD card can be
downloaded as native .dav or as .mp4 files. The
.dav files can be played using the supplied Smart
Player software though it was noted that its
functionality was quite limited.
Four Privacy zones can be set based on easily
re-sizable rectangles that can be shaped and
dragged to their required locations.
Two audio input channels and a Line-Out are
available on the rear panel of the camera and a
front mounted internal microphone can be used if
the camera is not fitted into a housing. In practice
the camera vision and sound were reasonably
well synchronised on live images but a delay of
around half a second was noted on SD card
recordings. This may be improved by different
resource and resolution settings.
The video dynamic range is stated as an
impressive 140dB but this does need to be turned
on and does reduce the overall sensitivity. While
not stated as a digital WDR it does depend on
sensor output processing to achieve the extra
20dB of range. Alternatively, there are Backlight
compensation and Highlight Suppression modes
that can be utilised to suit the environment. These
settings can be assigned to separate Day and
Night profiles to take advantage of the likely
scene and these can be time scheduled or input
triggered.
A large amount of image processing is used to
reduce image noise at low light levels.
Supplied with the camera is the SmartPSS
software. This does identify as a Dahua product
and can be used both to display multiple camera
images with up to a 64-way screen split, map
displays, event handling and recording capability.
System latency at 1920 x 1080 was an
impressive 355ms average when used with IE11
and 414ms with SmartPSS display. At 3840 x 2160
(8MP) this increased to an average of 580ms for
IE11 and 557ms for SmartPSS.
Alarm handling is flexible with a variety of
analytic modes available. Two relays can be
directly controlled from the browser or a suitable
control system and these can be associated with
internal detection methods.
Image loss and network associated alarms can
be raised to generate alerts or send notifications
as appropriate.
IVS features such as Face detection are
relatively simple to set up and provide good
results if care is taken to follow the manual
instructions. Detected faces are highlighted and
can generate recordings, snapshots or alarm
events. Audio detection is level based and can be
set to trigger if a threshold is overcome. A simple
on-screen level meter indicates the sound and
trigger level for test and configuration purposes.
There was a tendency for the alarm schedule to
default to a single day’s activity so it is important
to check all settings when establishing alarm
actions. The non-specific manual does not always
help in this regard but is essential reading for
some of the trip-wire and missing object alarms.
The camera is very solidly built with a metal
case and good thermal management supporting a
stated operational and storage range of -30° to
+60° C.
Conclusion
It is to be hoped that some of the initial problems
encountered here are due to an early release of
the support CD and information. A model specific
manual would be advantageous for such a
potentially complex device.
It is likely that lens choice will be limited for
some time unless this mount finds more common
usage in the security industry. Various compact
mirrorless digital cameras use the M43 format so
this may be the best way to provide a variety of
options, but controlled zoom versions may be
limited and expensive.
It is of concern that manufacturers will state
that a camera will perform in colour down to
0.0005Lux without providing any proper context
for their measurement process. This may lead to
major difficulties with handing over systems if
tenders are based on this information alone
without site testing.
Apart from the concerns regarding the initially
available information this is a very sensitive
camera with flexibility of configuration.
ESP – Aperta battery powered
Wi-Fi door station
What’s in the box?
Door station unit
Chime unit
7 x AA batteries
Installation tool
Cabling
Fitting screws
8GB card plus adapter
Instruction manual
In an increasingly
busy market this unit
more than matches
anything we’ve seen
so far but with the
added functionality of
door unlocking
Following on from the launch of its Aperta
range of Wi-Fi door stations last year, ESP
has introduced a battery-powered version
with the aim of making it quicker and easier to
install a security solution, without the need for
cabling. The market is currently seeing a lot of
new companies coming into this sector with Wi-Fi
video doorbell products aimed at the home
owning smartphone user however this unit from
ESP goes a step further than most by offering the
ability to also unlock doors with the further
installation of a 15V minimum hardwired power
supply and suitable locks. This feature brings the
unit into the realms of the professional security
installer.
The new Wi-Fi door station is available in
graphite grey and matt black versions and is
powered by four AA batteries and each kit comes
with a battery-powered chime. Battery life is
reported to be around six months.
Aimed at both the domestic and light
commercial markets, the Wi-Fi door station allows
homeowners to view and talk to visitors at their
home whether they are on the premises or not.
From a smart phone or tablet and using the free
ESP app, property owners get alerts to visitors
and can see who is at the door, engage in two-way
communication and allow remote access if
desired.
The unit comes with a memory card to record
events and the app enables cloud storage via
Dropbox or Google Drive for video viewing and
auditing.
Installation
As is the way of many Wi-Fi security systems there
is a hardware installation and an App set-up
required to have the system in place. The Wi-Fi
door station comes in a kit form containing
everything required to get the system up and
running, including the Wi-Fi door station, 10DB
Wi-Fi antenna, micro SD card etc.
According to the manual, it is recommended
that the door station is programmed prior to
installation. To set-up therefore, the App was
loaded onto an Android phone via the Google Play
store and the batteries and micro SD card were
inserted into the unit. The first procedure is to
‘add a new system’ which involved giving the unit
a name, scanning the QR code on the rear of the
station and entering the default security code.
Then a new page enables connection of the unit
to the router by entering the network name and
password. For Apple users there are a few extra
steps to take at this stage. Once connected the
app prompts you to change the security code from
the default which is good to see given the many
concerns with Wi-Fi security.
The unit is now ready to install, but as always
it is worth testing connection to the network and
the app before final fitting.
The installation of the door station itself
involves no more than drilling three holes for the
mounting bracket/sunshield and then fitting the
unit using the hex screw supplied while the
battery powered chime can be free standing or
wall mounted (two screws).
For the purpose of this review the unit was
tested in its basic application as a video doorbell
using only the supplied contents of the box rather
than creating an entire door access system with
electromagnetic locks, emergency release buttons
etc.
Operation
When used in its default settings the door station
itself emits a ring tone and the button LED is lit
red. The internal chime unit also sounds and an
alert is sent to the smartphone. On opening the
message the video screen opens in the app and
the visitor can be seen clearly in HD video backed
up with IR for night time events.
Using the designated icons on the app the
tenant can speak to the visitor while the
microphone on the door station allows clear twoway
conversation. If required, a snapshot can be
taken. The video recording and sound can be
turned off at this screen and any door
opening/locking is carried out here too.
By accessing the advanced set up menu in the
app it is possible to change a host of settings
including the tone and volume of the external
chime, messaging, cloud settings, video frame
rate and resolution, night settings, door relay etc.
Conclusion
In an increasingly busy market this unit more than
matches anything we’ve seen so far but with the
added functionality and optional locking
accessories it meets many of the requirements of
a more sophisticated single door solution.
Next generation display
card reader launched
Stanley Product & Technology has
announced the introduction of the display
card reader PACOM 8707 initially available
in the Nordics with a roll out to other
countries and regions in due course.
The PACOM 8707 supports all generations
of the MIFARE protocol radio frequency
identification (RFID) based cards and the
Wiegand over the air protocol.
In order to provide an enhanced level of
protection against hackers, PACOM 8707 also
supports the latest version of the SIA’s Open
Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP). The use of
OSDP also allows means the card reader can
safely interface with control panels or other
security management systems.
Programming cards or manual card reader
programming devices are not required, as the
downloading of encryption keys is carried out from
PACOM Unison software, which then configures
the card reader along with the rest of the security
system. Alternatively, it can be locally configured
through the OLED display when installed by an onsite
systems integrator.
Panoramic camera featuring
four full-HD sensors
Flir Systems has introduced the Quasar 4x2K
panoramic camera featuring four full-high-definition
visible sensors. The latest security camera in the
FLIR Quasar family, the 4x2K produces 4K
resolution. The mini-dome camera offers wide area
surveillance to monitor cities, critical infrastructure,
and other high-profile security areas.
Offering interchangeable field-of-view options of
180- and 360-degrees, the Quasar 4x2K can replace
multiple individual cameras, allowing security
operators to reduce the number of security cameras
required for monitoring wide areas. With automatic
stitching that combines the four sensors into a 180-
degree view, the camera generates a detailed,
seamless image that eliminates blind spots and
scene duplication. Built-in infrared illumination
automatically adjusts to the 180- or 360-degree
viewing mode and monitors without the
need to illuminate the scene.
The Quasar 4x2K integrates with
FLIR’s video management
systems (VMS) and major
third-party VMS. Using a
one-step configuration
process the Quasar
4x2K adjusts to
either 180- or 360-
degree viewing
mode. With an
IP67 rated dome
enclosure to
withstand mist, rain,
and accidental
submersion, the unit provides
24/7 video surveillance either in- or
outdoors. www.flir.com/security/4x2K
New VMS brand claims easy
set up and use
The new Wisenet WAVE video management
software (VMS) from Hanwha Techwin
reportedly makes it easy to display up to 64 HD
video streams.
An intuitive ‘drag & drop’ tool enables
operators to set up a display of live and
recorded images on a single screen or video
wall, with customisable layouts and sizes.
Other key features include a virtual PTZ which
enables operators to zoom in to see close up
detail of any suspicious activity, whilst motion
detection and video analytics
support can be configured to
generate alerts when user
defined incidents occur.
The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss
new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day
activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our
attention so here we take a look at some of the products we
think you won’t want to miss this month.
Smart locks for convenience
Switches expand a network
from 1Gb to 10Gb
As heavy-data applications such as video put
pressure on networks, AMG Systems has
launched a means of strengthening connectivity.
AMG’s Commercial Layer 2+ 10Gb Managed
Ethernet switch series brings the benefits of 10Gb
Ethernet to any business.
“All business sectors are seeing a growing
demand for bandwidth to support high-end
applications, including the recording and
streaming of high-resolution video data, such as
in surveillance systems,” says AMG Sales and
Technical Support Manager Ian Creary. “But
thankfully 10-Gigabit solutions are no longer a
platform that only the largest enterprises can
afford. The increasing adoption of 10Gb copper
and fibre NIC adapters by servers, storage
vendors and others has made the price of a 10Gb
solution more attractive than ever before.”
The products in AMG’s Managed Ethernet
switch range have 8, 24 or 48 gigabit ports, with
or without Power over Ethernet support, and
1/10Gb SFP+ uplink ports providing a solution for
expanding a network from 1Gb to 10Gb.
Cloud-based alarm system combines security with smart living
ERA has launched the HomeGuard Pro cloud-based
alarm system aimed at the professional installer.
The use of the Cloud reportedly takes away
constraints that a localised alarm system brings, with
the immediate benefit being no control panel, just a
hub. There is no complicated set up, as this is all done via smartphone
app and should the panel be damaged, all settings and data is stored
in the cloud. Installers need only get another hub and the system is up
and running again.
The Cloud also enables the monitoring of multiple hubs from one
account, meaning quick-flip viewing of different locations can be
carried out. This is possible as it’s no longer the app talking to the
panel via SMS or GPRS, it’s the app talking to the Cloud which can
hold the data from multiple hubs and report back to you fluidly on
them all. In the event of an intrusion, HomeGuard Pro will
simultaneously alert all stored contacts and provide real time data.
INTERVIEW
Talking technology topics
On the eve of the fifth NSI Summit,
we caught up with Chief Executive
Richard Jenkins to find out which
subjects and trends will be covered
at the 2018 event
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the
independence of the National Approval
Council for Security Systems (NACOSS) from
the Loss Prevention Council (LPC). In 2001
NACOSS joined forces with the Inspectorate of the
Security Industry (ISI) to form the body we know
of today as the National Security Inspectorate
(NSI). The certification organisation has
witnessed a changing security industry in its time
and today approves over 1800 companies. Five
years ago it began a new venture organising an
annual event for its approved companies giving
them an opportunity to see new technology, to
network with their peers and also attend seminars
and workshops to help develop their businesses
and practices.
The NSI has been running the Summit for the
last five years in Birmingham and this year will be
its second at the Vox, next to the NEC. According
to Richard Jenkins the event is generating
considerable interest from exhibitors, with more
than 70 expected to be in attendance. The Summit
has secured IFSEC International as Summit
Partner, BT Redcare, CSL and RISCO Group as
Gold Sponsors, with Fermax and Texecom as
Silver Sponsors. An enhanced seminar
programme is also anticipated to attract a record
number of security and fire safety professionals.
"This year we're broadening the Summit
because the security industry is no different from
the rest of the world and is being driven by
technology and innovation,” he explains. “In the
case of CCTV it's clear that we are seeing a move
towards its convergence with other disciplines
and there is a breadth of applications for systems
that utilise a number of security measures - which
means there is much to talk about in 2018.
“For example, whether you are an installer or a
security guarding company, a provider of the
hardware and/or software, in the police or fire
sector, all you know is that the analytics and
power of CCTV today is creating a whole
convergence of technology that, in turn, is making
it more relevant for a much wider community than
before. So this year we're widening the Summit to
embrace more of the fire presence and we are
inviting our guarding operators, who tell us every
time we meet them how they're integrating CCTV
more into their everyday operations.
“So in 2018 it doesn't really matter which
direction you might be coming from because you
will be fully aware of the benefits of convergence
but may need to find out more about the
applications of the technology in your specific
field. New this year will be a series of masterclass
workshops focusing on those areas and also
discussing the standards updates including NSI’s
Code of Practice for the design, installation and
maintenance of CCTV surveillance systems - NCP
104 Issue 3. This will help to drive best practice in
terms of delivering functionality to the customer
Richard Jenkins addresses the
audience at the NSI Installer
Summit last year
“This year we're widening the Summit to embrace more of
the fire presence and we are inviting our guarding
operators, who tell us every time we meet them how
they're integrating more CCTV”
INTERVIEW
(from previous page)
and the wider public who are using the spaces
that are being protected by these systems.
"Operability of the system is a key factor in the
success of a security system," says Richard. "Is
the technology straightforward to use? As we all
know, there have been cases where the system
has been too complicated for the user to get the
most benefit from it. A system must be fit-forpurpose
as no two applications are completely
the same. So we developed the Code to take into
account this operability."
Security of security
The security of security systems has always been
a topic that has had to be addressed when
designing systems and the introduction of
networked systems creates another area of
vulnerability that must be assessed and risks
mitigated.
"There's nothing in the new NCP 104 that could
be deemed to be 'rocket science', it is essentially
some guidelines for best practice," says Richard.
"The idea of the Summit is to help the NSI in its
role of improving the installation, application and
use of security systems and the Code has been
developed to address this and to raise awareness
of the cyber security issues that are very apparent
in the industry today.”
Going IP
As Richard explains, the shift to providing
networked services continues with the news that
BT will be moving to an all-IP model by 2025 and
this is something that the industry will need to
keep on top of as the change takes place.
"The ultimate aim for us is to communicate the information
that our approved companies need and we use the
Summit to show them the latest technology”
"There are concerns with IP comms because,
unlike the PSTN, which sets up a dedicated call
and provides a high level of confidence that data
has been transferred, IP networked systems,
using whatever medium to interface into the
network, rely on packets of data that are subject
to all the potential vagaries of a routed network;
so the reliance that the security industry is
putting on network providers is arguably greater
than anyone realises!” says Richard. “We will
have experts from BT talking at the Summit about
the progress in migrating to IP as from an
installer's point of view, the last thing you want to
do is finish an installation that then won't work
without the addition of another piece of IPenabling
kit. Installers need to be prepared for
these changes."
These topics will be addressed at the Summit
and there will be opportunities to get more indepth
with areas of interest throughout the day in
the master-class workshops and with the
technology manufacturers exhibiting in the hall.
"In 2018, I think we will be bringing a much
fuller programme to the seminars and workshops
as there is so much to get through and more
variety than in the previous events," says Richard.
"The ultimate aim for us is to communicate the
information that our approved companies need
and we use the Summit to show them the latest
technology in the marketplace and develop their
appreciation of Standards and Codes of Practice
to help bring added value to their business. We're
not exhibition organisers but this form of event
helps us meet many of the requirements of our
companies so we are happy to arrange the
Summit for their benefit. Furthermore we’re keen
to make sure that our companies get the most
from their time away from the day job, so we’re
constantly honing the event to meet their needs.”
The NSI Summit will be held on 22 March 2018
at the Vox Conference Centre, Birmingham.
PANEL
Will resolutions rise again?
Will the next trend for CCTV manufacturers be a rise in resolution or a
continuation of the development of software such as AI, analytics, VMS
etc? Is it simply too early to try and move the UK market to 8K? The PSI
Panel considers the next move for surveillance developers....
“The introduction of
increasing resolutions
is an attractive
opportunity for
manufacturers and
their Installers alike”
24
or the last decade or so the resolution of
FCCTV cameras has steadily risen to the
point where we are recording clearer
images than ever before and gathering
increasing amounts of video footage data.
During the resolution race to 4K we saw
manufactures go up through the stages from D1,
720, 960, 2MP, 1080p at pretty much the same
speed and launches at trade shows definitely
followed a pattern until a few years ago when
Avigilon threw a curve ball with a 7K camera
announcement. Since then the move to a higher
resolution than 4K across the market seems to
have taken a back seat in favour of software
developments that work with all of the new
information being gathered by the latest cameras.
Recent trends at the exhibitions have
included AI, apps, integration and plenty of
analytics capability so does this mean we’re
sitting at 4K for a bit longer or will the
development of 8K cameras be on the horizon
anytime soon? Do we need the 8K TV market to
take a more solid footing to create demand? The
PSI Panel of experts ponders the immediate
trends for surveillance developers.
John Goy – CSL
The introduction of increasing
resolutions is an attractive
opportunity for manufacturers
and their Installers alike.
However, there are other
challenges I believe the industry faces that must
be considered in any advances that are made.
Modern CCTV increasingly sees the CCTV
Recording in the Cloud. There are limitations
with the Cloud due to bandwidth size, and
increased resolution may exacerbate this issue.
There is no doubt that higher bandwidth means
higher quality but it isn’t that simple. It can take
longer for the data to be transferred depending
on the connection available. Additionally, if
there is no backup connection then data cannot
be sent at what may be a crucial time. It doesn’t
matter how good the images are if they cannot
be sent. This is a major issue for our sector.
The need for wireless/4G connectivity is also
rising as increasingly sites require a mobile
backup, or in fact do not have a permanent
wired or IP connection. Now that 4G services are
available Installers are provided with better
www.psimagazine.co.uk

mobile bandwidth, offering a viable alternative.
In fact, upload speeds on 4G often equal those
of download speeds as there is less data
uploaded from mobile applications.
GDPR is also a major concern for CCTV
Installers. These connections between the CCTV
system and the Cloud must fulfil the GDPR
regulations by 25th May 2018. Increased
resolution and additional features (e.g. remote
maintenance) are attractive but also leave an
opportunity for cyber-attacks. Ensuring your
system is protected at every stage is vital to
protecting your customer and ultimately your
business.
Stephen D Green –
Security Institute
Very rarely does technology
create demand in the total
absence of conscious desire.
The Sony Walkman was one
notable example of this.
Rather, technology commonly develops
incrementally to address residual requirements
which previous iterations have failed to meet.
Mobile phone technology is a good example of
such technological evolution in action.
The pertinent question here then is whether
there exists today any operational impetus
towards higher resolutions than are already
available. Given that basic offerings from
camera manufacturers these days generally
provide 1080p, and the market for multimegapixel
cameras gravitates towards widearea
or long-range crowd surveillance
applications often designed around post-event
analysis, I see little evidence that commercial or
governmental end-users, the majority of whom
rely on real-time surveillance, are screaming out
for higher resolution. In such post-event
investigative environments, CCTV is used
generally in support of other broader evidence
gathering techniques; it is unusual for a case to
rest solely on video evidence alone.
Conversely, there does exist a frequentlyvoiced
desire to bring greater intelligence and
automation to bear on the function of real-time
incident management. This demand is driven by
the dual aims of curbing costs (by reducing the
number of operator hours spent on mundane
surveillance) and improving effectiveness (by
keeping operator’s fresher for longer and
ensuring that nothing is missed). The more the
www.psimagazine.co.uk
camera and video management system can do
to detect anomalous behaviour and present this
to operators, the better, rather than relying on
them looking in the right direction at the right
time. A “Copper’s Nose” is far more effective if it
has first been pointed at a target!
Thus, whilst markets may be coerced into
moving in a specific direction, water will not
willingly run uphill. A market will not appear
magically for products that are not perceived to
serve a meaningful purpose.
Tim Biddulph –
Hanwha Techwin
We appreciate our customers
quite often require a solution
which enables them to achieve
more from their investment in
video surveillance in addition
to capturing high definition images. At Hanwha
Techwin we think there will be a continuing
trend in the development of solutions which
combine video surveillance with specialist
Applications which capitalise on analytics, deep
learning and AI.
The open platform technology and massive
processing power of the chipsets incorporated
into the latest generation of cameras means
virtually any Application can be uploaded and
(continued over)
“Whilst markets may
be coerced into
moving in a specific
direction, water will
not willingly run
uphill. A market will
not appear magically
for products that are
not perceived to serve
a meaningful
purpose”
25

PANEL
“Undoubtedly the
trend towards higher
resolutions is set to
continue, and it’s only
a matter of time before
we’re seeing 8K more
broadly. However, in
the immediate future,
we expect AI to be at
the forefront of
manufacturers’ minds”
26
(from previous page)
run onboard the cameras.
Looking to the future, we have anticipated
the huge potential of AI (Artificial Intelligence)
technology and will are collaborating on the
intelligent video analysis platform which is
currently being developed by NVIDIA. This will
feature AI GPUs based on Deep Learning on
security devices. We will be looking to develop
AI cameras and storage devices capable of
autonomously detecting abnormal movements
and situations by utilising the NVIDIA platform
which we will apply to our city surveillance,
retail and traffic solutions.
David Davies – DVS
We have seen massive growth
in HD analogue over the last
couple of years, with no real
sign of it slowing down. Some
manufacturers now have 4K
HD analogue solutions with
the ability to power the cameras up the coax
itself, eliminating the need for extra PSU, saving
time and associated costs. This will surely be a
big hitter this year.
We have already seen a big adoption of 4K,
with lower costs and improved algorithms and
bandwidths, I can only see more users making
the move to 4K. We are also now seeing a big
push into products that contain AI, which offer a
wider range of applications from False Alarm
Filtering, Human Target Detection, Face
Recognition, LPR and so on.
As AI develops, I believe that in the not too
distant future the actual image will become
secondary to the other data types that the
camera will provide (mentioned above). The
technology will develop to become self-learning
and self-autonomous, a ‘fit and forget’ solution
with little or no programming needed. Sounds
like Skynet?
With many devices now supporting the GPU
on the edge device and sending the Metadata to
the server, this can make for a much improved
and much reduced cost solutions. I believe over
the next twelve to 24 months we will see more
of these products appear in the market place, so
watch this space!
Andy Palmer –
Seagate
Undoubtedly the trend
towards higher resolutions is
set to continue, and it’s only a
matter of time before we’re
seeing 8K more broadly.
However, in the immediate future, we expect AI
to be at the forefront of manufacturers’ minds.
Deep learning and analytics has the power
to not just increase a business’s surveillance
abilities, but benefit the businesses much
more broadly. We’re already at a point where
AI and analytics in surveillance is being used
to analyse data very effectively – particularly
for security monitoring. This is achieved by
building a database of ‘queries’ or algorithms
that can help organisations assess what is
deemed ‘normal’ behaviour, and therefore
allows systems to recognise suspicious
behavior as it begins to emerge.
However, for businesses to truly benefit
from this type of surveillance AI and analytics,
they need to consider much more than just the
surveillance technology that they’re using.
Businesses need to make sure that their
hardware, such as hard drives, are robust
enough to support the constant 24/7 analysis
and data storage that’s needed. Hard drives
built with AI and analytics in mind are ideal for
intensive computational workloads that
typically accompany AI work streams, giving
the best support to your surveillance
technology.
Sequrinet is one of the most secure network products available
on the market today.
Installers will have the option of Enhanced Password Control (EPC). This will prohibit the use of ‘1234’ and other
easily infiltrated passwords and only allow the use of passwords upon selection, the EPC will remove any
backdoor user capability and will disable P2P and DDNS options by default.
Videcon understand that certain installations will not require such a high level of security; therefore, EPC is purely
optional. Compatibility to organisations requiring a stringent level of password protection is essential and it is this
compatibility that undoubtedly makes the Concept Pro recording devices the most secure in the market
suitable for use in government, public space and banks to name but a few.
Enhanced Password Control, easy interoperability and the potential for use in a varying array of situations
ensure that Sequrinet is one of the most secure network products available on the market today.
Secure Eurpean Servers & P2P
P2P networking makes it simple for installers to configure mobile viewing of the Concept Pro
Recorders on smartphones and tablets. Installers simply activate mobile viewing by
scanning the QR code on the unit into the Concept Pro app (available for Android and iOS
devices free of charge) connecting through the server straight to the NVR.
INTEGRATION
Intelligent integration
The importance of intelligent, integrated fire safety and security systems
and selecting the right technology for the job
Fire protection and security systems have long
been entirely separate, with large and wellestablished
technological and regulatory
hurdles that can seem insurmountable. The
security industry has not yet realised the many
benefits of integrating fire safety and security
systems – but according to Peter Lackey, fire
product manager UK & Ireland, Johnson Controls
this is ripe for change.
“A huge challenge for security professionals is
establishing the cause and severity of a potential
fire without endangering employees,” says Peter.
“By centralising and integrating CCTV and video
into fire alarm and detection systems, security
operators can visually investigate alerts from a
remote location in order to establish whether a
fire is real or a false alarm. Through this
technology, organisations can judge whether it’s
an electrical malfunction, a human error, or the
beginning of a potentially destructive fire – and
are in turn granted an important head start in
both speed and accuracy when reacting to
potentially dangerous and time-critical fire safety
events.”
The false alarm problem
Reducing false alarms isn’t just convenient for
security managers and businesses – it’s essential.
False alarms cost the UK taxpayer an average of
£1 billion every year, with fire crews using
precious resources to get to systems triggered by
things as insignificant as steam or accidentally
burnt toast.
“Over time, employees can become
complacent – choosing not to react to ‘yet another
false alarm’ – which runs the risk of potentially
tragic consequences,” explains Peter. “Now, many
fire brigades do not respond to an automated
alarm signal unless it is accompanied by a 999
call. In addition, fire brigades now have the option
to invoice companies in excess of £400 to cover
the cost of attending a false alarm call. This is
designed to encourage owners of regularly poorly
performing systems to address the causes by
changing or upgrading the mode of detection or
improving their service and maintenance
programmes.”
Integrating CCTV into the system is one key
way to limit emergency services’ attendance for
false or unwanted alarms, and with the threat of
fines now coming into force, there’s more reason
than ever to put in place an integrated fire
detection system with CCTV as part of the
package.
Why is integration not
commonplace?
Up to now, the fire industry has taken an insular
approach to building management, siloed
between fire or security. This was largely down to
“By centralising and integrating CCTV and video into fire
alarm and detection systems, security operators can
visually investigate alerts from a remote location in order
to establish whether a fire is real or a false alarm”
www.psimagazine.co.uk
29

INTEGRATION
CCTV integration is
currently in its infancy
– the industry is only
just starting to move
away from its insular
approach.
Nevertheless, the
technology does exist
(from previous page)
very different regulation and hardware – it’s hard
to integrate your fire detection system with your
CCTV loop if they run off different cabling and
voltages, or, more importantly, if the regulator has
different requirements for each.
Whereas there’s a sure end to a security event,
with a fire, the situation can continue for hours or
even days and develop into a much more serious
disaster. As a result, health and safety regulations
have traditionally treated the systems that
monitor these events differently, making it hard
for companies to understand the benefits of
system integration.
Thus, it’s never been more important to
explore the possibilities of integration.
Peter Lackey continues: “Although the number
of fire-related deaths in commercial buildings has
been decreasing on average over the last several
decades, insurance claims are at almost £1.6m
per day – and rising. These difficulties are made
worse by increasing numbers of large open area
buildings – often with little or no fire
compartmentation – and worsening arson figures.
Some modern buildings are designed with large
internal atria, which make detection and
containment of fire more challenging for the fire
alarm design engineer. There has also been an
upturn in crime related arson, with fire used as a
means to destroy evidence that would be
discovered through any subsequent forensic
investigation. Here, integrated video surveillance
equipment can be used to record evidence while
also confirming the presence of fire.”
Where should security
professionals start?
CCTV integration is currently in its infancy – the
industry is only just starting to move away from
its insular approach. Nevertheless, the
technology does exist: the big players in the
market have begun to launch graphical front-end
systems capable of handling the extra inputs and
making the system more user-friendly for
optimum speed and efficiency.
This technology is likely to be adopted first by
large facilities management companies
overseeing high-budget buildings, such as in the
City of London. But as with all innovations, once
the concept has become accepted it will begin to
filter down through the industry, from upmarket
new builds to facility redesigns, and ultimately to
widespread usage.
“With older fire systems, building managers
have to contend with differences in voltage and
cabling, making it impossible to simply patch
cameras into the existing circuits,” reveals Peter.
“Countering this problem requires an interfacing
system. Companies should overlay a separate
camera system to mirror the existing fire system,
connecting the two networks through controllers
in the central control room. In this situation, the
central user interface is key – it’s important to
have an intuitive platform to work over.
“The ideal situation following integration is
that the new system acts as a labour-saving
device, making it easier for safety and security
staff to do their jobs. What it shouldn’t do is make
it harder to decipher multiple sensory inputs.”
A future for integration
Companies involved in new builds and total
system overhauls have a unique opportunity to
put integration at the heart of any safety and
security project, installing connecting systems
from the beginning, bolting CCTV onto fire safety
systems. This can be done with analogue
equipment, but an increasing number of providers
are moving towards high-definition, IP-enabled
cameras.
The arrival of internet of things (IoT) devices
means that it is not long before everything from
cameras and detectors to doorways and stairwells
will contain IP-enabled sensors, feeding back
important and essential information to the central
control room. This way, teams can be more
confident about providing effective coverage for
the whole site, with automated assistance to
speed up their response times. In the fire safety
industry, where the stakes are so high, it’s vital
that security teams take full advantage of the new
capabilities on offer in order to maximise the
chances of successful responses.
“Where fire and security are concerned, the
right choice of equipment can provide peace of
mind – by using CCTV integration on sites,
security professionals can leave work knowing
that their site and its workers will be safe,”
concludes Peter Lackey. “To prevent false alarms
and ultimately save lives, it’s high time CCTV
integration became a reality.”
SECURITY
Security in 2018
“Drones are not a
replacement for 24/7
CCTV cameras in any
building or facility,
they are ideal tools
to work in tandem
with CCTV”
Security & Counter Terror Expo (SCTX) 2018 showcases the capabilities,
technology and knowledge to protect nations, businesses and people from
terrorism and serious security threats. Here we talk to two experts ahead of
their presentations at the London event
n addition to the exhibition areas SCTX also
features an educational programme that
Idelivers insight into current issues and how to
combat new challenges. Ten free-to-attend
conference streams, which will run on the
exhibition floor, will cover border security, the
cyber threat, protecting national infrastructure,
policing, major events security and security
design. Ahead of the event we spoke to two
experts who will be presenting seminars which
will be of specific interest to installers.
The role of drones
Firstly we met with Andrew McQuillan, director at
Crowded Space Drones, to find out how the new
‘eyes in the sky’ fit in with fixed surveillance
systems. At SCTX, Andrew’s presentation is titled:
“Securing Crowded Places from Drones and
utilising their Technological Benefits for Security,
Safety and Counter Terrorism”..
How do drones enhance the use of
existing CCTV systems?
Drones are not a replacement for 24/7 CCTV
cameras in any building or facility, they are ideal
tools to work in tandem with CCTV, especially in
the days of austerity in security budgets with both
public and private sector organisations.
Many people talk about autonomous drones
and it is technically and legally possible to have a
drone patrol the perimeter of a large complex that
is secure from public access and not located in
the middle of a town, city or otherwise congested
area. This is a much more efficient use of a
Security Officer’s time than exterior foot patrols
and can track any unauthorised persons found
onsite.
A benefit for public places is the ability to
respond to fluid and dynamic incidents. CCTV is in
fixed locations and history has shown many
terrorists and criminals will tailor their activities
to avoid fixed location CCTV. With drones you are
able to dynamically follow such activity and in a
much higher resolution than CCTV systems allow.
This includes keeping evidence continuity by
tracking suspects continuously and not having to
move between cameras when they are leaving a
field of view.
The legislation for the use of drones makes it
very hard to fly drones overhead people not under
their control (i.e. public spaces) and hence it is
unlikely in the near future Security Officers could
deploy such a tool themselves. This is purely
down to the risks imposes on the unknowing
public on the ground from an emergency situation
with a drone.
Are there any basic restrictions
surrounding drones compared to fixed
cameras?
On a base level, all use of surveillance with
drones has to comply with the relevant legislation
34 www.psimagazine.co.uk

for any ground based video surveillance. We then
have to comply with the aviation legislation and
consider privacy legislation with drones.
In relation to privacy, there are no specific rules
related to privacy from the use of drones with
cameras. What is considered as standard practice
in the aviation industry is the Civil Aviation Act
1982. This states that any lawfully flying aircraft
cannot breach trespass. In line with current
filming guidelines for public space, the airspace
where a drone is legally flying is therefore
deemed as a public space.
This does not however give the right to utilise
zoom cameras and look into private owned
spaces. For example, if someone uses a legally
flown drone to film someone sunbathing in their
back garden. This would not in itself be illegal,
however if they then publish the video footage
this could result in offences being committed.
The recommended guidance from industry is to
consider the use of drones as covert surveillance.
At 400ft in the air, it can be impossible to see or
hear a drone let alone work out where it is
looking. Therefore when it comes to public
authority surveillance, RIPA authorisation is
required.
Cyber and security systems
The second expert we spoke to was Graeme
McGowan, Senior Tutor and Cyber Advisor at UK
Security Partners who will be presenting a
seminar entitled: “The Relationship between
Physical and Cyber Security and the Human
Factor” at SCTX.
How much of a genuine IT risk are IP
security systems?
A real and present danger! If the network
infrastructure is compromised, malicious hackers
or adversaries can gain full control of the network
infrastructure enabling further compromise of
other types of devices and data and allowing
traffic to be redirected, changed, or denied.
Possibilities of manipulation include denial-ofservice,
data theft, or unauthorised changes to
the data. Intruders with infrastructure privilege
and access can impede productivity and severely
hinder re-establishing network connectivity. Even
if other compromised devices are detected,
tracking back to a compromised infrastructure
device is difficult. Malicious actors with persistent
access to network devices will re-attack and move
laterally to other access points after they have
been ejected from previously exploited hosts.
The solution is proper network segmentation,
an effective security mechanism to prevent an
intruder from propagating exploits or laterally
moving around an internal network. On a poorly
segmented network, intruders are able to extend
their impact to control critical devices or gain
access to sensitive data and intellectual property.
Security architects must consider the overall
infrastructure layout, segmentation, and
segregation.
Segregation separates network segments
based on role and functionality. A securely
segregated network can contain malicious
occurrences, reducing the impact from intruders,
in the event that they have gained a foothold
somewhere inside the network. Also deploy a SOC
that will enable detection of intruders across the
network – internally and externally. It’s also
important to note that with security, there’s no
one-size-fits-all approach. Every network is
different and requires skilled professionals to
create tailored plans across all fronts: apps,
databases, network devices, cloud servers, IT
infrastructures, and the weakest link in the
security chain: humans – the users. These
security plans are living, breathing things that
need to be updated, upgraded, and patched on a
constant basis, too.
Who should be held responsible for
the security of networked security
systems?
The responsibility for the security of networked
security systems must lie with skilled
professional IT experts but more importantly the
C-Suite must lead in fostering company-wide
cultures of cyber-awareness, vigilance, and
preparedness. Clearly cybersecurity is
everybody’s problem and it’s high time this truth
was recognised starting with the executive suite
on down. This can be done by introducing a
program of awareness, training and education
from top to bottom.
Both Andrew and Graeme will be presenting
seminars at SCTX 2018. See them and others at
Olympia, London on 6–7 March.
“Clearly cybersecurity is everybody’s problem and it’s high
time this truth was recognised”
the industry’s longest warranty
Our Unparalleled Warranty
Underpins IDIS Signature
Quality and Reliability
In a landscape with average industry warranties
ranging from three to five years, IDIS’s new
Ultimate Warranty extends the company’s
standard warranty for recorders to five years,
with the added benefit of two additional years
for registered recorders. This brings the warranty
for IDIS’s H.265 network video recorders (NVRs)
an industry leading seven years. (IDIS IP cameras
eligible for the two-year extension will also benefit
from extended warranties of five years.)
The IDIS Ultimate Warranty gives IDIS integrators
and installers a competitive advantage and
delivers increased peace of mind and lower cost
of ownership to end users. A recent industry
survey by IFSEC Global showed most organizations
look to upgrade surveillance systems five to
seven years after installation. With the IDIS
OPINION
Learning from experience
The ever-changing
world of security
through the eyes of
Andy Purvis, Managing
Director of NT Security
as the company
celebrated 20 years in
business last year
You would think that twenty years in the
security industry would mean that you have
pretty much seen it all. This could not be
further from the truth. Like so many industries
that rely heavily on technology, the advent of the
Internet and the Digital Age has changed a sector
which we thought we knew so well. Now we are
seeing technological innovation that many did not
believe to be possible, meaning that while this is
an exciting time for the security industry, it is also
one of the most challenging. And it will continue
to be so.
Key business decisions need to be made, with
an eye very much on the future. Failure to do so
could mean falling behind on your competitors.
This mind-set is vital in an industry that is
constantly changing. Not having the agility to
adapt and to change to the fluid environment of
the sector will mean that chances of longevity and
success are going to be reduced.
Living in an offline world
Believe it or not there was a time when online
processes were not the norm. The first “access
control” cards on the market were shadow cards,
which were hole-punched and when magnetic
cards came in, they would be programmed with a
hairdryer. The industry has certainly come a long
way since then.
Twenty years ago, everything was offline.
Doors were programmed independently, meaning
that in large premises there could be a thousand
plus doors meaning a thousand plus controllers
to go with them. It was not the most efficient way
of working, nor the most economical and even
when the transition was made from offline to
online, it did not revolutionise the way the
industry worked overnight. There were bumps in
the road, a steep learning process and
technologies that did not quite work to the high
standard that was required.
Of course, this is completely unheard of now.
Thanks to innovative technology, such as the
Internet of Things (IoT), everything is now linked
up and has a central point of control. Though we
are already seeing the IoT making a considerable
impact in the consumer space (you will have
heard of smart fridges and smart homes), IoT will
continue to influence how we secure premises
going forward. This is where a demand for
integrated systems will become more and more
commonplace as there will be a desire for
everything to be linked. This means that the
providers who can offer these fully integrated and
linked systems will rise to the top and will have a
significant advantage over competitors.
These integrated systems will not necessarily
be entirely security focused. The rise of workforce
management has been hugely influential across
all sectors, with the manufacturing industry
embracing the technologies and software that are
now available. Industry 4.0 has meant that
manufacturers now have huge swathes of data
which can aid them when making those crucial
business decisions. Security providers need to be
adding the installation of workforce management
Twenty years ago, everything was offline. Doors were
programmed independently, meaning that in large
premises there could be a thousand plus doors meaning a
thousand plus controllers to go with them. It was not the
most efficient way of working, nor the most economical
OPINION
Businesses should
morph and change
every four or five
years to avoid
sinking. This is a
mantra that all
business leaders
should live by
(from previous page)
systems to their arsenal, offering it as part of their
integrated solutions when speaking with their
clients.
With these new technologies comes the need
for a new set of skills. In a world where cloudbased
systems, IoT and Bluetooth technology is
set to dictate the direction of the industry,
maintenance will be carried out off-site. This will
lead to outsourcing of services taking more of a
lead with more specialist skills being required,
causing a talent war within the industry.
Winning the talent war
The biggest challenge the industry faces today is
recruitment. There has been a significant decline
over the years of educational courses that are
specifically catered towards producing security
engineers. There used to be apprenticeships and
night classes for such a vocation.
Youngsters don’t go to college thinking one
day they want to be an engineer for a security
company. There needs to be a real concerted
effort by the sector to attract people into the
industry, with a particular focus on finding the
technicians with the skills required for the
technology in play. With such high demand comes
greater competition. We have seen some of the
big names starting to build their own academies
to tackle this issue. But even this comes with its
challenges as they are effectively creating
engineers for their competitors.
Keeping hold of this talent means that you
need to adapt to the demands of the workforce
and perhaps look at things like flexible working or
other incentives to keep hold of the talent that
you have nurtured. Again, it is about adapting to
the shifting security industry landscape.
Businesses should morph and change every
four or five years to avoid sinking. This is a mantra
that all business leaders should live by and return
to when making those business decisions. The
security industry is one of the most competitive
around with a number of big name players
competing for business. Potential customers (and
existing ones) will want to work with the supplier
/ manufacturer that is the most agile, and that
they feel comfortable will always provide the
most up to date security. Adapt or die. It’s as
simple as that.
Meet the installer
Security life with David Barnes of
Black Box Security Alarm Systems
“Black Box is a family
company that has
been operating for
almost 40 years and I
am part of the new
senior management
team driving the
business forward after
working on the
operations side here
for nearly 25 years”
Name: David Barnes
Job title: Managing Director
Time in security/fire: 30 years
Company: Black Box Security Alarm Systems
Location: Head Office in Chorley, with operations
nationwide
Areas of expertise: All aspects of electronic
security and life safety systems
Accreditations: NSI Gold and BAFE
Do you use a distributor or buy direct from
manufacturers?
The majority of our purchases are through
distribution; however we do have some direct
accounts. We offer keen pricing to all our
customers so this varies dependant on demand
for specific systems.
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
your company?
Most definitely yes, the security industry has
been well regulated through NSI for over forty
years. However, we have found that the
introduction of the equipment-grading scheme
has meant that lower level grades are more
commonly requested than they were prior to this
benchmarking.
This move has had an adverse effect on the
quality of the systems especially with the
signalling transmission unit. Prior to the
introduction of grading most systems had a
RedCARE/GSM or DualComm transmission
device, which would now be equivalent to grade 4
signalling transmitter.
The insurance companies need to get a hold on
this, and start specifying not only the grade of the
system but also the grade of signalling device.
Insurance companies now request grade 2 or
grade 3, which are lower priced and, of course
compliant, however standards should be driven
by insurance companies and the monitoring
device should be the equivalent of a grade 3 or a
grade 4.
Regarding life safety systems, there is much
work to be done here by the regulatory bodies
and the industry in the way of education and
benchmarking.
Even though a fire alarm system protects life,
anybody can install a system and create their own
certificate, which will be accepted by most
insurance companies and local building control
offices. We are very rarely asked for a BAFE/LPCB
certificated system and after what happened at
Grenfell and other residential buildings, we must
act now and regulate so that all fire systems
should have a BAFE or LPCB certification.
What would be a typical project for you?
We work across the public, residential and
commercial sectors and so all projects are
different in scale and requirements.
We are currently working on a number of large
residential apartment blocks in Manchester city
centre, however we also carry out works in a large
number of education campuses, FM companies,
blue chip companies, NHS buildings and a wide
range of national retail outlets.
Do you think there is a skills shortage in
the industry? Any trouble recruiting?
I have recruited trainee engineers for over 20
years who have all gone on to become fully
accredited technicians and over 90% of them are
together raising standards
(continued from previous page)
“Despite spending increasing amounts of money on
mobile phone plans, devices, TV packages, socialising
and technology in general, people still spend very little in
protecting themselves, their assets and their families as
a proportion of their income”
still working for Black Box which is testament to
the team and the culture that we have built here.
There are plenty of engineers available;
however it is, as you would expect, the good ones
who are in high demand.
Roles that we are actively recruiting for at
present are in the sales division - an executive
and a senior member to head up the team. It
would appear that currently they are really few
and far between and we are hoping that the New
Year brings the added impetus for people to look
into their next career move.
Black Box is an owner-managed company that
has been operating for almost 40 years and I am
part of the new senior management team driving
the business forward after working on the
operations side here for nearly 25 years. Most of
our employees have been with us for over 15
years, which I think is a good indicator of the sort
of business that we operate.
We are very busy currently and want to
continue growing organically and through
acquisitions. As we move into this period of
expansion the positions available will give the
right candidates the opportunity to be part of that
growth and the scope to grow with the role.
Are there any common requests from
customers that give you problems?
We don’t really experience any unachievable
customer requests, we always work with all
customers whether residential, public sector or
commercial to ensure that we have a complete
understanding of the requirements. Our long
history in the industry and the skills across these
three sectors means that we always recommend
and deliver the right systems and support.
I have always been focused on delivering a
level of customer service that I would personally
expect (and I have very high standards), this is
echoed throughout the workforce and I like to
think it is second to none.
This is echoed as a large majority of our
customers have continued to work with us for
over 15 years.
What is the industry’s biggest myth?
That people view security as high on their priority
list when in fact a good number of people don’t
take security seriously until they have
experienced an issue.
Despite spending increasing amounts of
money on mobile phone plans, devices, TV
packages, socialising and technology in general,
people still spend very little in protecting
themselves, their assets and their families as a
proportion of their income.
What will be the impact of smart/home
automation on the security sector?
I believe this will open a door for us all, however
the industry needs to be mindful of internet sales
and other non-accredited companies providing
security solutions, which may not be compliant.
This would have a totally adverse effect for both
installers and clients. Online sales have opened
the gateway for non-accredited systems on the
market and people buying cheap systems will not
have the same reassurance or protection as a
purchase from a reputable accredited company.
Even with the emergence of home automation
where there is more ease of operating a decent
security system remotely, the problems remain
the same - if people are buying substandard
equipment then there will still be issues.
What would make your job easier?
Accreditation is so important for the industry and
the businesses operating within it. There needs to
be clear regulations driven by the appropriate
bodies and the insurance companies to ensure
that all security and life safety systems are
installed by a fully accredited company.
What would be your ultimate fantasy
security product?
After spending 25 years working in the security
industry I don’t really have any fantasies about
specific products!
Will England ever win the football World
Cup again?
Yes, most definitely, well you have got to keep
hoping…
What would you do if you won £25,000?
I would take the family on a nice holiday and
invest for the future.
REVIEWS
CCTV – TRIED & TESTED
An overview of some of the products we have featured in PSI
independent test reports. This month we highlight recent CCTV reviews;
products are listed in no particular order. As always, manufacturers and
distributors have no input in the test reports or results
Serage – SRTVIVDPRO70
Available in the UK via G-Tec, the camera provides a TVI compatible HD
output along with an SD output and has motorised lens functions. Three
high intensity infrared LEDs are mounted on each side of the lens to provide
long range scene illumination. The camera has an ingress protection rating
of IP68 and is stated as ‘Vandal proof’.
Review: A very capable camera but somewhat let down by its documentation that could
do with improved translation and an expansion of details. The range of image settings
should allow the camera to suit a wide variety of applications.
Ivideon – Oco Pro OPHWD-16US
Ivideon provides a ‘Cloud’ based service which the Oco Pro camera works with to allow
live and recorded images to be displayed on PC using Mac OS, Windows or Linux and
phone or tablet devices using iOS and Android. The company partners with a number of
camera suppliers and the Oco Pro camera dome tested was based on a Hikvision model.
Review: From a security perspective, it is not clear what advantage this system brings apart from the
ability to have someone host your event recordings off site. This of course requires very good connection
bandwidth and while manageable for individual cameras, may not scale well.
Concept Pro – AIR3526-IP4M-Z
This camera is promoted as an ONVIF compliant 4MP 2.8 -
12mm motorized zoom lens weatherproof bullet camera with
35m IR range, suitable for short to medium range
applications. It is the in-house brand from the distributor
Videcon. The camera housing is IP66 rated and therefore is suitable for
internal and external use.
Review: This is a very capable camera with good image quality and midrange
sensitivity. It is clearly worth spending time familiarising yourself with all of the available features so that the camera’s
performance can be optimised for the intended scene to be viewed.
Vista VK2-5MP360INT
This unit is promoted as a 5MP 360° “Fisheye” dome camera for internal
use allowing a single camera to cover a whole room from the centre
without blind-spots. The camera is installed using PoE and having such a
wide viewing angle should need no physical adjustment. All settings can
Operational analytics solution for airports announced
Genetec has introduced Genetec Airport Sense, an operational analytics solution that relies on data provided by an
airport’s existing security infrastructure, including cameras, sensors, and various detection devices to produce actionable
intelligence about airport security, operations, and passenger flow. By accessing and analysing both structured and
unstructured data from these untapped security information sources, airports can extend their security investment. By
analysing and correlating data provided by multiple sensors such as
video surveillance cameras, access control hardware, and IoT
connected devices, Airport Sense gives airport security and
operations managers, business analysts, and airport executives, a
deeper understanding of what’s happening in their facilities.
By relying on powerful analytics such as queue detection and
delays, heat mapping, directional analysis, and people counting,
Genetec Airport Sense pinpoints hindrances to the flow of passengers
in ticketing, screening, and passport control—and can identify where
wait lines build in areas such as duty free, dining, entertainment, and
pre-boarding. www.genetec.com
Enhanced situation awareness and controls
The latest version of exacqVision video management system
(v8.8) from Johnson Controls provides tools that are described as
able to improve situation awareness and control for both
administrators and users.
To better react to imminent events that could potentially affect
business, users can now embed a web page as a panel within the
exacqVision client to get important information. This could be
used to display breaking news headlines, or even for connectivity
to web-enabled security or other mission critical systems.
Additionally, event links can be displayed as an association
which will appear on top of the live video feed. Ideal for
associating access control or intrusion breaches, this feature is
also listed as useful in applications such as retail, where
metal/foil detectors are now being deployed to detect foil-lined
bags, a new tool for shoplifters. Once the serial data profile is set
up from the metal detector, whenever a foil-lined bag is detected,
an alert will trigger and automatically appear on top of the
corresponding live video, providing critical information to the
retailer trying to prevent rising theft.
This latest release also adds controls for administrators
looking to more strictly manage how and when users can access
the VMS. Expiring inactive accounts, automatically unlocking
accounts, and assigning temporary guest accounts are a few of
the new features that give system administrators visibility and
control over system access.
exacqVision v8.8 has also introduced the hover feature to
accelerates the process of identifying where cameras are located
(e.g. lobby, parking lot). While for CCTV set-up, multiple IP
cameras can be imported to several servers at one time
via a CSV file, which includes the cameras’ IP
addresses, usernames, passwords, etc.
City-wide incident detection system uses
camera data to spot incidents
Hanwha Techwin and Sprinx Technologies have developed
Wisenet Automatic Incident Detection (AID), a city wide incident
detection solution.
Traffic AID lets operators instantly know when traffic is
slowing down and whether there is a lengthening queue. It will
also detect broken down or illegally stopped vehicles and if
there is a wrong way driver, a pedestrian in danger or there is
smoke in a tunnel. It will even spot if some cargo has fallen off a
lorry.
Traffic AID utilises intelligent image processing to alert
operators about specific traffic related events whilst at the same
time enables statistical data such as vehicle classification,
counting and flow to be recorded. Traffic AID’s intuitive web user
interface enables operators to specify detection zones and
parameters and to analyse statistical data via graphics and
charts. An event journal provides a log of all events and
snapshots of individual incidents.
The Traffic Hub server based application collects and
aggregates data from multiple network connected Wisenet
cameras and through its interface offers a quick overview of all
traffic incidents. Providing detailed but easy to understand
graphs of traffic data such as the numbers and
average speed of vehicles, the application is available
in 4, 16 and 48 channel packages.
Using AI to predict human behaviour
from facial expressions
Human has developed new software that has the
ability to read subliminal facial expressions live and
convert these into a range of deeper emotions and specific
characteristic traits in real time. The software is designed to
take security and intelligence insight onto another level.
Through the deciphering of live characteristic traits and
emotions utilising deep learning, the technology is aimed at
better equipping the security and intelligence world with data
that will keep both the security provider and its customers safe,
thus allowing them to make vital decisions such as monitoring
extreme, or even life-threatening behaviour in some cases.
The technology is also supporting suicide prevention, face
detection and verification amongst crowds, extreme behavior
monitoring, societal disturbances and anti-social behavior.
Yi Xu, CEO and Founder of Human explains: “The ongoing
scanning of emotions and characteristics in both small and large
crowds has provided our clients with the ability to flag any
extreme highs and lows in emotions. When narrowed down to
extreme happiness, sadness, nervousness amongst others, it is
giving both general and security staff the foresight and ability to
step in before the worst case scenario presents itself.”
This continues to further aid the ongoing pattern spotting and
monitoring that exists today. The flagging of characteristics and
emotions combined with face detection allows crowd monitoring
and tracking to be taken from a previously reactionary process,
to a preventative state.
Businesses can now be confident that they are acting with the
added benefit of psychological and emotional data as well as a
visual track. www.wearehuman.io
A mind-set for success?
This month Jim Rathbone takes
inspiration from the richest man
in the world...
o 2018 is underway. Did you set clear goals
Sfor the year and if so are they still in focus?
Are you optimistic about the year? What is
your mind-set?
I was struck reading the 2017 letter from
Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos, written when the
company has achieved a valuation of 100 billion
dollars, only 20 years after it was founded.
Bezos compares "Day 1" companies —
companies that are at the beginning of their
potential — with "Day 2" companies. A “Day 2”
mind-set means stagnation followed by painful
decline and death. Bezos wants Amazon to
retain its mind-set as a “Day 1” company. For
him there are 2 imperatives, 2 main hallmarks of
a “Day 1” company. I believe they have
resonance for security installers.
Bezos credits Amazon's precise and
unwavering focus on customer outcomes for the
company's success. He says that Amazon
focuses on always giving customers something
better, even if it means inventing something
totally new, like Amazon Prime. The company
has also embraced outside trends like cloud
computing and AI. While trends like those can
be easy to spot, Bezos suggests that "Day 2"
organisations resist them.
To take advantage of emerging opportunities
and market developments, Bezos stresses the
importance of "high-velocity decisions." That
doesn't mean making low-quality decisions, but
it does mean most decisions should probably be
made with somewhere around 70 percent of the
information you wish you had.
"You need to be good at quickly recognising
and correcting bad decisions. If you're good at
course correcting, being wrong may be less
costly than you think," Bezos says.
Take five minutes and read Jeff Bezos' 2017
Amazon Annual Letter online and share it with
your team and explore how it is relevant to your
business.
"You need to be good
at quickly recognising
and correcting bad
decisions”
PSIM protects two London
tower blocks
A new Concierge and Physical Security
Information Management (PSIM) solution from
Intergrated Security Manufacturing (ISM) is
protecting two tower blocks in Haringey,
enabling authorised council employees to
control door access and manage fire and
security systems from anywhere within the
council’s estate.
Newbury House, Finsbury House, John Keats
House and Thomas Hardy House in Wood Green,
London, already feature four of ISM’s Ultimate
door entry systems as well as another two, thirdparty
technology systems (Elizabeth Blackwell
and George Lansbury) from Entrotec, utilising its
Apex Dual path speech technology. Thanks to
the Genesys PSIM from ISM, multiple
technologies can be controlled, regardless of the
manufacturer, providing enhanced security to
residents in 510 flats across the six towers.
Genesys allows the integration not just of
door entry systems, but also multiple systems
from multiple manufacturers – all from one
holistic integrated security system. Every
electronic security or fire safety device can be
monitored and controlled from a single platform.
Such was the complexity of the project, that
from initial design of the system to completing
the installation took around two years to
complete. Fire alarms, access control and CCTV
can all now be controlled from one computer
Fire detection at luxury student
accommodation in Durham
Securing medicines at Spire
Manchester Hospital
Abloy UK has supplied Spire Manchester
Hospital with PROTEC2 CLIQ and Traka 21 key
management systems to improve the security of
medicines and increase nursing efficiency.
Nursing efficiency is detrimentally affected by
poor management of keys, and teams using
older mechanical systems can have problems
locating keys to gain access to controlled drugs
– wasting time and affecting patient care.
Spire Manchester Hospital specified a
combination of PROTEC2 CLIQ keys and cylinders
which were retrofitted to a range of Bristol Maid
drug cabinets throughout the hospital, including
theatres, out-patients and several wards. Staff
CLIQ keys were housed in Traka 21 key cabinets
fitted across the wards.
PROTEC2 CLIQ is based on mechanical high
security disc cylinders combined with encrypted
electronic locking and identification.
Power to the lock is provided by the CLIQ key,
therefore no batteries or wires are required. The
system allows for remote key management,
providing audit trails on locks and padlocks, and
the ability to remove lost or stolen keys from the
system, substantially increasing the security of
controlled drugs.
PROTEC2 CLIQ was combined with the
Traka21 key management system, which
provides nurses’ access to a single key for the
duration of their shift. By entering a PIN code to
access a specific key which they validate using
the wall programming unit, they can access
every cabinet they’re authorised to open.
Camera masts supplied for
Mersey Gateway Project
WEC CCTV has supplied 65 camera masts for the
new Mersey Gateway Bridge.
The company secured all three parts of the
project to manufacture nine trolley head masts, 40
tilt over radar masts, and 16 cantilever masts
which straddle the highway and mount ANPR
cameras.
It took eight months for the company’s team of
engineers to complete the project for the Mersey
Gateway, which is a multi-million pounds
transport scheme between Runcorn and Widnes in
Cheshire, England.
The main part of the project was the
construction of the toll bridge spanning the River
Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal. The
crossing, which opened in October 2017, has three
traffic lanes in each direction and provides a much
needed link between the towns.
Mike Allison, WEC CCTV Sales Manager, said:
“The whole scheme was carried out in line with
the project’s tight timescale and specific
requirements. This was a fantastic project to be
involved with.”
New fire safety doors for
housing charity properties
In a follow up to a case story outlined in PSI last
year, Delta Security is helping to protect
residents with the installation of new fire doors
at a property managed by Brick-by-Brick, a
London-based charity that provides permanent
and temporary housing for people with
homeless status.
The new fire doors, installed into the charity’s
Queens Road property, replace residents’
previous flat doors. The doors include
intumescent fire seals, which consist of a strip
on the door’s edge that expands if there is a fire,
ensuring the door provides airtight protection
against smoke and flames.
The project was undertaken following a fire
risk assessment, and having worked with Delta
Security for the last couple of years Isabelle
Gravenstein, General Manager at Brick By Brick,
approached them for a solution.
Last year (as reported in PSI), Delta Security
installed a Master Key Suite locking system into
the property, which it was able to transfer to the
new fire safety doors. The company liaised with
all residents to minimise disruption and ensure
each door could be completed in one day,
maintaining the integrity of the security system.
Isabelle says the installations went extremely
smoothly, and were completed faster than
expected.
Integrated access control at
new campus building
Students, staff and property at Newcastle
University’s new Urban Sciences Building are now
protected with an access control system, provided
and installed by Chubb Fire & Security. The access
control solution with an integrated intruder alarm
is already in use in all other buildings on
Newcastle University’s campus.
“We required a highly secure yet flexible and
user-friendly system to ensure convenience and
safety,” said Richard Johnston, senior project
manager, estates support service, Newcastle
University. “As a new build, it was vital that the
building’s security was in place for the new term.”
With the new system, the estates management
team is able to print ID passes, restrict and
monitor access, and be responsive to potential
incidents. It is also able to review arrangements
for events and monitor door usage. The Urban
Sciences Building has 60 doors, requiring
separate zoning and access restrictions.
Prior to the building opening, Chubb delivered
training to the estates management team.
Logistics estate to utilise 500 cameras to
protect buildings and goods
Galliker Transport & Logistics is set to use 500 Panasonic video
surveillance cameras throughout its 18 branches in Switzerland.
At the moment Galliker is using over 400 video surveillance
cameras however, by the end of 2018, this is set to increase to over
500 cameras operating throughout the estate.
The company uses video surveillance primarily as protection for
buildings and goods, as well as for the optimisation of work
processes. Video cameras also capture access to the grounds and
buildings. With the porter being the initial point of contact for
incoming suppliers, the video surveillance is used for the allocation
of parking lots and ramps. The gates and barriers open automatically
for Galliker’s own and pre-registered vehicles when approaching the
office site, which is triggered by means of LPR / ANPR.
All of the cameras record outside of the organisation, whilst being
centrally managed in one location based in Switzerland, which saves
network bandwidth and time in IT integration. The entire IT
infrastructure and support is managed by the IT department of
Galliker.
Head of IT, Fredy Feurer comments, "We are very pleased with the
Panasonic video surveillance cameras. In recent years, we have
acquired a great deal of know-how about these products, but
because of the more efficient installation and easier maintenance,
only a few camera models are in use."
Galliker has opted for Milestone's video management system
which allows for easy and fast integration of various camera
manufacturers’ devices. In 2013, Comtronic Communications
introduced the first Panasonic cameras with Milestone software to
Galliker.
Fredy Feurer adds, "400 cameras are in use and the number will
increase to 500 by the end of 2018. The cameras have a long service
life and a good price-performance ratio, and the video surveillance
solution allowed us to streamline processes and simplify work
processes. "
OFF THE WALL
CAUGHT ON CAMERA
CCTV records “worst parking ever”
As we all know, CCTV has a real value in the
fight against crime, however once in a while it
captures the public doing something that is
perhaps not altogether sensible or it catches a
real one-off moment. Here we look at some
footage that made headlines this month …
Hi armed robber, I saw you coming!
According to newspaper reports that described
the video as showing the ‘worst parking ever’,
the driver of a white Citroen replied “so what”
when he was confronted as to why he had
rammed his car into another parked vehicle
when attempting to park. Footage of the parking attempt was
caught on CCTV in Hythe, Kent.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCs9qoVDFuw
Cash for crash plot foiled by footage
Britain's biggest single 'crash for cash'
insurance plot was foiled after conmen were
seen grabbing their necks on CCTV when the
ringleader drives into the back of bus in a slowmotion
collision in Cardiff. Footage released
recently by the Police exposed the scam resulting in a jail
term of twelve months and a driving ban for Merrick Williams.
Insurance company AIG became suspicious after receiving
seven injury claims from the seven scammers who were
handed suspended sentences and ordered to undertake
community service.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBPP5b1Cth8
Would-be robbers take note. When this lowlife
decided to try and hold-up a convenience
store in North Carolina with a handgun, he
hadn’t banked on the cashier watching him
approaching the shop and preparing for the
encounter by getting out a shotgun. Needless to say, he fled
the scene with no money or property.
Hammer doesn’t solve debt problem
If you are suffering
with debt
problems, one of
the solutions you
may have
overlooked is to
take a hammer to
an ATM. In this
video a man in
China triedto
avoid paying off
his debts to a bank by smashing its cash
machine in frustration. The man (who later
handed himself into police) said that he owed
the bank 340,000 yuan (£40,000) and he was
not able to pay back the loan.
