News Newport on the move Newport continues to evolve as a hospitality hub with a new trattoria, live music venue and bar and boutique beer establishment opening in recent months. Italian eatery Sotto Sopra joins The Kave Bar and Three Pines, all on Barrenjoey Rd, to provide new relaxed venues to get a bite to eat, have a drink and enjoy music. Sotto Soppra is a branchout venture from restaurateur Alessandro Pavoni (Ormeggio at The Spit), with partner Mattia Rossi joining as co-owner and head chef after working the pans at Ormeggio and its adjoining kiosk Chiosco. Alessandro’s wife Anna, who works with the team, told Pittwater Life they had been hunting for another site on the northern beaches for a while. “Our criteria really is either on the water, or a site that has something memorable and different about it,” she said. “The site at Newport has those huge beautiful curved glass walls, and with its multi-level design we missed the water, but we certainly got something memorable and different.” She explained Sotto Sopra means “down/up” in Italian – reference to the interior design on the place (the kitchen is above the dining room), but Sotto Sopra also translates as “upside-down”... so as usually seen in other Pavoni ventures she says you can expect some twists on traditional Italian dishes. Anna said their welcoming communal table, which sits 16, had been embraced since their opening in early February. “We have found it to be really popular with families who want to go out together,” she said. “We’ve also been seating smaller groups in a communal setting and it always turns into a really convivial table.” Sotto Sopra is open for lunch on Friday to Sunday 11.30am-3pm, and dinner from 5pm daily. 6THINGS THIS MONTH History lesson.
