Abandoned vehicle now gone On your bike to battle new year bulge Queenslanders fighting the battle of the bulge in the new year are being encouraged to switch to active transport for their daily commute. Avoiding weight gain has been a challenge for many Queenslanders over the past decade, with the average person gaining a kilogram every three to four years. Bicycle Queensland spokesperson Kim Ryan said there had never been a better time to focus on small lifestyle changes, like combining daily commutes with exercise, to improve the health and wellbeing of our State. “Almost two-thirds of Queenslanders are overweight or obese and studies show only 56 per cent of adults in Australia meet current physical activity guidelines,” Ms Ryan said. “Unfortunately, not enough Queenslanders are offsetting the extra kilojoules from unhealthy food and drink choices with adequate exercise, but the good news is that physical activity can easily be incorporate into our daily routines. “Getting more people commuting to work or school on two wheels is better for our health, our environment and even our hip pockets.” Insufficient physical activity and unhealthy eating contribute to a range of chronic diseases including obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers. For optimum health, physical activity guidelines recommend that adults should aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate intensity activity every day. Ms Ryan said riding to work or school was one of the most time-efficient ways to combine regular exercise with your everyday routine. “We know that around 56 per cent of Queensland homes have access to at least one working bicycle, which is a great start for getting more people cycling more often,” Ms Ryan said. “Unlike some sports, cycling does not require high levels of physical skill and can be done at either a low intensity or as a demanding physical workout. “It’s a healthy, fun and low-impact form of exercise for all ages.” Visit www.bq.org.au or call 3844 1144. The abandoned vehicle that appeared on the New England Highway near Cawdor Road at Highfields before Christmas has now disappeared. When it first appeared police conducted enquiries and were unable to make contact with the registered owner. After reasonable time was given for the owner to remove the vehicle, a silver Alfa Romeo, police then contacted Toowoomba Regional Council for removal but, because the vehicle was on a main road, it did not come under their jurisdiction. The Department of Main Roads was then contacted and they conducted procedures which also included attempts to contact the registered owner, and again, giving a reasonable amount of time for the vehicle to be removed. When, after reasonable time, it had not been removed, police said the Main Roads Department then began procedures for removal of the vehicle.
