EDITOR’S DESK Keep it simple There is no need whatever for opponents of an Australian republic to confuse the public mind again by raising the issue of who will become president. This red herring was why the referendum in 1999 failed when the public was asked whether they wanted a president appointed by parliament. The ensuing debate left the public - and a significant proportion of parliamentarians - confused and suspicious and guaranteed the failure of the referendum. In democracies the world over, the leader of the successful political party becomes head of state. Labor prime ministers Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard both supported an Australian republic. The issue was not raised during the prime ministership of John Howard 1996-2007. Conservative and royalist Prime Minister Tony Abbott and successful royal visits in recent years have put the issue somewhat on hold. Children exchange hours of bike riding, swimming and playing with friends for hours of sitting in the classroom, or often, in front of screens. Keeping children active throughout the year is essential. It’s important for parents and teachers to take steps to get children moving throughout the day. Being physically active is good for their health, and creates opportunities for making new friends and developing physical and social skills. Back to school tips to keep children active teachers make physical activity a natural part of the school year. • One, find new ways to increase activity. Childen spend a lot of sedentary time in the classroom, but it’s important to offset this. Find ways to break up the day with bursts of exercise, for example, park the car a block away from school and walk the last part with your child, or encourage them to run around and play at lunchtime. • Two, try out a sport or active hobby. Allow children to choose the type of activity they are interested in, or from a few options. It could be a team sport at school, such as soccer, football or netball, or a class like dance or martial arts after school. Teachers and parents can introduce basic sporting skills from a young age, such as ball throwing, skipping and jumping, so they feel more confident across a range of activities. • Three, make exercise a family activity. The entire family could go for a bike ride, take a walk around the neighbourhood before dinner, or head to a local park to shoot a few hoops or kick a ball to get children moving after a day in the classroom. • Four, restrict tech time. Keep screen time to less than two hours a day. If children have spent a considerable amount of time on screens in the classroom, why not switch off at home and find new, active ways to get busy. • Five, model good behaviour. Crows Nest Australia Day A cultural feast, breakfast and a tea and damper morning tea, await Crows Nest residents at the town’s Australia Day celebrations this Friday, January 26 starting at 7am. The culture and entertainment includes a re-enactment of Waltzing Matilda, the bush band Cloud Nine will perform, there will be performances by the Crows Nest Community Choir, and Lace up those running shoes, do stretches or hop on the bike, to show children that you regularly participate in physical activity yourself and enjoy it. Both teachers and parents can be a positive role model for healthy habits. The time that should be spent being active will vary, depending on a child’s age. Australia’s Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines recommends that toddlers and pre-schoolers should be physically active every day for at least three hours, spread throughout the day, with at least one hour of that as energetic play, such as running and throwing. For health benefits, children and young people, aged over five years, should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day and minimise the time they spend being sedentary. Positive changes to help them be healthier, happier and stronger will have significant short and long term benefits, and reduce the risk of chronic disease later in life. At least one-third of all cancers can be prevented by simple healthy lifestyle changes, including exercise, so it’s important for Queenslanders to stay physically active throughout their life. Champion brewer sets up in Highfields By MILES NOLLER A reluctant home brewer is planning to develop a commercial microbrewery in Highfields. Nathan Semmens made a variety of beers that pleased his friends so much that they strongly encouraged him to enter them into a brewing championship. His entries were simply as he had made them, nothing special for a contest. But they won for him the title of champion brewer of Queensland. That was in 2014, and Nathan repeated the success in 2015, the year he and his family moved from Brisbane to Toowoomba. His wife, Valerie, took up a position as a medical doctor in Toowoomba, and the family decided to live in Highfields. Yet again, Nathan had to be encouraged, this time to expand from home brewing to a commercial enterprise. Valerie said that, because the quality of what Nathan was producing, that she encouraged him to set up a business so members of the public could also taste and enjoy the range of beers he made. Toowoomba Regional Council last week approved plans for a microbrewery, restaurant, bar and three shops, on the New England Highway. Pool re-opens Oakey pool re-opened to the public at 9am on Friday. Toowoomba Regional Council Community Development and Facilities portfolio leader Cr Geoff McDonald said a replacement pump had been installed and was circulating water through the pool and filtration system. Cr McDonald said the repairs It is next to the Chocolate Cottage, on a block that once included an older style house. This building was sold for removal, and Nathan is now working to get the four proposed buildings constructed. Valerie said it was hoped to have the business ready for opening by the end of this year. She said the difficulty might be obtaining the required liquor licences. A liquor licence can only be applied for, once there is a building in place. That includes glassware, dishwashers and the like. In 2014, Nathan entered 12 beers in the Queensland Amateur Brewing Championships. Three were placed first in their classes, three gained second places, two were placed third, and two were in fourth place. He was named Champion Brewer. In 2015, Nathan again entered 12 beers (or ciders), and five were placed first in their class. Nathan was again named Champion Brewer, but also had the Champion Beer, his Australian Premium Lager. necessitated the pool’s closure to ensure there was no public safety risk. “The water is safe for swimming and the normal trading hours have resumed from 9am Friday,”he said. “All scheduled activities will now operate at the pool.
