EDITOR’S DESK
Keep it simple
There is no need whatever for opponents of an Australian
republic to confuse the public mind again by raising the
issue of who will become president. This red herring was
why the referendum in 1999 failed when the public was
asked whether they wanted a president appointed by
parliament. The ensuing debate left the public - and a
significant proportion of parliamentarians - confused and
suspicious and guaranteed the failure of the referendum.
In democracies the world over, the leader of the
successful political party becomes head of state. Labor
prime ministers Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard both
supported an Australian republic.
The issue was not raised during the prime ministership
of John Howard 1996-2007. Conservative and royalist
Prime Minister Tony Abbott and successful royal visits in
recent years have put the issue somewhat on hold.
To the editor
Last week’s media coverage of
anti-social behaviour on our roads
has demonstrated the need for a
redoubling of our efforts, as one
community, to create safe streets
for all Queenslanders.
Rest assured, Bicycle
Queensland is committed to
working with motorists and cyclists
to inspire change.
We are equally committed to
working with the State and local
governments to find better ways
of driving behaviour change and
providing safe conditions for
connecting Queensland via our
transport networks.
For my part, I’d like to live in a
world where our children can learn
to ride their bikes on local streets
without being afraid of fast-moving
Magical Parks
The hot summer conditions are expected to
0-5 Library Program
Our region’s libraries know the importance of
introducing reading to children at a young age.
Slow down and share the road with cyclists
The start of a new school year
means the start of new habits and
new routines.
Children exchange hours of
bike riding, swimming and playing
with friends for hours of sitting in
the classroom, or often, in front of
screens.
Keeping children active
throughout the year is essential. It’s
important for parents and teachers
to take steps to get children moving
throughout the day.
Being physically active is
good for their health, and creates
opportunities for making new
friends and developing physical
and social skills.
Fitting enough exercise into the
day may seem difficult at times, so
Ms Chris McMillan shares five
tips to help parents, guardians and
traffic. To achieve that, we must
slow down, share the road, and
make space.
We know a resounding majority
of Queenslanders want to see
stronger investment in bikeways
(67%), and better connections
between bike paths and schools,
shops, pools, and parks.
Fifty-nine per cent of
Queenslanders want more on-road
bike lanes.
The evidence is clear,
Queenslanders want to get on their
bikes.
We need the whole community
to support us in making that
happen. - Anne Savage, CEO
Chief Executive Officer, Bicycle
Queensland.
Back to school tips to keep children active
teachers make physical activity a
natural part of the school year.
• One, find new ways to increase
activity. Childen spend a lot of
sedentary time in the classroom,
but it’s important to offset this.
Find ways to break up the day with
bursts of exercise, for example,
park the car a block away from
school and walk the last part with
your child, or encourage them to
run around and play at lunchtime.
• Two, try out a sport or active
hobby. Allow children to choose
the type of activity they are
interested in, or from a few options.
It could be a team sport at school,
such as soccer, football or netball,
or a class like dance or martial arts
after school. Teachers and parents
can introduce basic sporting skills
from a young age, such as ball
throwing, skipping and jumping,
so they feel more confident across
a range of activities.
• Three, make exercise a family
activity. The entire family could go
for a bike ride, take a walk around
the neighbourhood before dinner,
or head to a local park to shoot a
few hoops or kick a ball to get
children moving after a day in the
classroom.
• Four, restrict tech time. Keep
screen time to less than two hours
a day. If children have spent a
considerable amount of time on
screens in the classroom, why not
switch off at home and find new,
active ways to get busy.
• Five, model good behaviour.
Crows Nest Australia Day
A cultural feast, breakfast and a
tea and damper morning tea, await
Crows Nest residents at the town’s
Australia Day celebrations this
Friday, January 26 starting at 7am.
The culture and entertainment
includes a re-enactment of
Waltzing Matilda, the bush band
Cloud Nine will perform, there
will be performances by the Crows
Nest Community Choir, and
Lace up those running shoes, do
stretches or hop on the bike, to
show children that you regularly
participate in physical activity
yourself and enjoy it. Both teachers
and parents can be a positive role
model for healthy habits.
The time that should be spent
being active will vary, depending
on a child’s age.
Australia’s Physical Activity and
Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines
recommends that toddlers and
pre-schoolers should be physically
active every day for at least three
hours, spread throughout the day,
with at least one hour of that as
energetic play, such as running and
throwing.
For health benefits, children
and young people, aged over five
years, should accumulate at least
60 minutes of moderate to vigorous
intensity physical activity every
day and minimise the time they
spend being sedentary.
Positive changes to help them
be healthier, happier and stronger
will have significant short and long
term benefits, and reduce the risk of
chronic disease later in life.
At least one-third of all cancers
can be prevented by simple healthy
lifestyle changes, including
exercise, so it’s important for
Queenslanders to stay physically
active throughout their life.
Champion brewer sets up in Highfields
By MILES NOLLER
A reluctant home brewer is
planning to develop a commercial
microbrewery in Highfields.
Nathan Semmens made a variety
of beers that pleased his friends so
much that they strongly encouraged
him to enter them into a brewing
championship.
His entries were simply as he
had made them, nothing special
for a contest. But they won for
him the title of champion brewer
of Queensland. That was in 2014,
and Nathan repeated the success
in 2015, the year he and his
family moved from Brisbane to
Toowoomba.
His wife, Valerie, took up
a position as a medical doctor
in Toowoomba, and the family
decided to live in Highfields.
Yet again, Nathan had to
be encouraged, this time to
expand from home brewing to a
commercial enterprise.
Valerie said that, because
the quality of what Nathan was
producing, that she encouraged him
to set up a business so members
of the public could also taste and
enjoy the range of beers he made.
Toowoomba Regional Council
last week approved plans for a
microbrewery, restaurant, bar and
three shops, on the New England
Highway.
Pool re-opens
Oakey pool re-opened to the
public at 9am on Friday.
Toowoomba Regional Council
Community Development and
Facilities portfolio leader Cr Geoff
McDonald said a replacement
pump had been installed and was
circulating water through the pool
and filtration system.
Cr McDonald said the repairs
It is next to the Chocolate
Cottage, on a block that once
included an older style house.
This building was sold for
removal, and Nathan is now
working to get the four proposed
buildings constructed.
Valerie said it was hoped to have
the business ready for opening by
the end of this year.
She said the difficulty might
be obtaining the required liquor
licences.
A liquor licence can only be
applied for, once there is a building
in place.
That includes glassware,
dishwashers and the like.
In 2014, Nathan entered 12
beers in the Queensland Amateur
Brewing Championships.
Three were placed first in their
classes, three gained second places,
two were placed third, and two
were in fourth place.
He was named Champion
Brewer.
In 2015, Nathan again entered
12 beers (or ciders), and five were
placed first in their class. Nathan
was again named Champion
Brewer, but also had the Champion
Beer, his Australian Premium
Lager.
necessitated the pool’s closure to
ensure there was no public safety
risk.
“The water is safe for swimming
and the normal trading hours have
resumed from 9am Friday,”he said.
“All scheduled activities will now
operate at the pool. Council thanks
residents for their patience,” Cr
McDonald said.
Nathan Semmens on the site of the proposed boutique brewery,
restaurant, bar and three shops in Highfields.
Stage lighting and audio workshop
The technical side of staging
any event or production
is as important as the guest
speakers or the performers
themselves.
In this digital age of refined
audio, engaging
graphics and mood enhancing
lighting people expect,
and even demand, such attributes
wherever they go.
From an event organiser’s
perspective, deficient audio,
inappropriate and ineffective
lighting, and poorly
orchestrated stage management,
leads to disappointed
audiences who are deprived
of a positive experience, and
they will remember that for
a long time.
Oakey and District Arts
Council have secured a
grant from Toowoomba Regional
Council to conduct a
two-day workshop in lighting
and audio production
based in Oakey’s Cultural
Centre.
The workshop will start on
Saturday, February 3. Limited
places are available for
this hands-on opportunity.
Tuition will be provided by
two members of Toowoomba’s
Empire Theatre technical
team.
Due to generous support
from Oakey Lions Club
there will be no charge for
local teenagers who wish to
participate in the workshop
series.
Engaging graphics and mood enhancing lighting.
However, a nominal registration
fee will apply to adult participants.
For registration forms and
Toowoomba, Queensland’s
famed Garden City and just 90
minutes from Brisbane, will be
buzzing with bowling action and
the spirit of friendly competition
this year as players, officials
and supporters from all around
Queensland gather to participate
in the annual Tenpin Bowling
Adult State Championships of
this popular sport.
Leader of the organising team
for the 2018 TBAQ Adult State
Championships, Morty Douglass,
today released details of
Queensland’s pinnacle event for
Youth and Adult bowlers from
all around the State.
In association with Platinum
sponsor, Back Roads Touring
Company, the Championships will be staged
across 5 days on two consecutive weekends, April
28-29 and May 5-7, 2018 at Toowoomba’s Sunset
Superbowl.
The state of the art, 24-lane centre will provide
the ideal venue for the event that is expected to
attract more than 200 players, officials and supporters.
The championships comprise several divisions,
culminating in Masters (elite) events for Youth,
Restricted, Adult, Over 45 years, and Senior (over
50 years).
Queensland’s famous Maroon and Gold state
colours will be reflected by the mellow tints of
red and gold that dominate the landscape around
Toowoomba in autumn.
“It’s been almost 20 years since the TBAQ Adult
State Championships were staged in Toowoomba
Toowoomba to host adult State titles
and we’ll be working closely
with Nathan Stein and volunteers
from the local Association
to present a truly memorable
event,” Douglass said.
“The Championships will
feature five divisions and will
include players from all over
Queensland.
“Adding to the prestige of the
2018 Championships will be the
inclusion of a Gala Awards function
and TBAQ’s Hall of Fame
Glorious book launch at Pioneer Village on Australia Day
Author Margaret Deacon will be launching her
first book at Highfields Pioneer Village on Australia
Day. Aptly named Glorious, her book is a recreation
of her grandmother Lizzie Smith’s journey to
Tasmania in 1914.
Margaret was excited to have discovered the
diary of her grandmother over 100 years later, the
research and re-creation of her journey to Tasmania
from Queensland delves into Lizzie’s adventures
with her friends and her mother during their 38-
day holiday.
Margaret, pictured, said, “Many questions remain
unanswered. Why did Lizzie decide to maintain
a diary for this trip, despite not keeping one
before or after? Why did the group decide to travel
so soon after the outbreak of World War I, and why
to Tasmania?”
In 1914 holidays were expensive, their trip included
a first-class passage on the SS Manuka from
Sydney to Hobart. Lizzie’s diary displays her humble
origins as a farmer’s daughter.
There are two changes set to
happen in the Warrego Highway
Australia Day long weekend.
Annual Memorial Day on
Saturday, February 17, at the
Memorial, Margaret and
Kitchener Streets, Toowoomba.
The memorial Ceremony will
start at 9.30 am. Army cadets
from Toowoomba Grammar
School as well as Navy and Air
Force cadets will take part. The
guest speaker will be the State
Together with Margaret Deacon’s re-creation of
the journey, it provides a charming insight into an
earlier and gentler era when trains, steamships and
horse-drawn vehicles governed the life of the patient
traveler.
From Helidon to Hobart, Lizzie’s ‘glorious’ adventure
takes in Sydney on the way, and all the
tourist spots of Tasmania, Port Arthur, Launceston,
Queenstown, Strachan.
“And the interesting thing is that these places
were as popular in 1914 as they are today.” Margaret
says.
Margaret Deacon ignited her passion for writing
history on retirement from a professional life and
following the completion of a history degree. The
publishing of a World War II research assignment
was the incentive to continue writing biographies
and recording histories.
Documenting local and family history ensures
our past will not be forgotten and this remains Margaret’s
motive.
Abandoned vehicle
now gone
On your bike to battle new year bulge
Queenslanders fighting the
battle of the bulge in the new
year are being encouraged to
switch to active transport for
their daily commute.
Avoiding weight gain has
been a challenge for many
Queenslanders over the past decade,
with the average person
gaining a kilogram every three
to four years.
Bicycle Queensland spokesperson
Kim Ryan said there had
never been a better time to focus
on small lifestyle changes, like
combining daily commutes with
exercise, to improve the health
and wellbeing of our State.
“Almost two-thirds of
Queenslanders are overweight
or obese and studies show only
56 per cent of adults in Australia
meet current physical activity
guidelines,” Ms Ryan said.
“Unfortunately, not enough
Queenslanders are offsetting the
extra kilojoules from unhealthy
food and drink choices with adequate
exercise, but the good
news is that physical activity can
easily be incorporate into our
daily routines.
“Getting more people commuting
to work or school on two
wheels is better for our health,
our environment and even our
hip pockets.”
Insufficient physical activity
and unhealthy eating contribute
to a range of chronic diseases
including obesity, cardiovascular
disease, diabetes and some
cancers.
For optimum health, physical
activity guidelines recommend
that adults should aim for at least
60 minutes of moderate intensity
activity every day.
Ms Ryan said riding to work
or school was one of the most
time-efficient ways to combine
regular exercise with your everyday
routine.
“We know that around 56 per
cent of Queensland homes have
access to at least one working
bicycle, which is a great start
for getting more people cycling
more often,” Ms Ryan said.
“Unlike some sports, cycling
does not require high levels of
physical skill and can be done at
either a low intensity or as a demanding
physical workout.
“It’s a healthy, fun and
low-impact form of exercise for
all ages.”
The abandoned vehicle that
appeared on the New England
Highway near Cawdor Road at
Highfields before Christmas has
now disappeared.
When it first appeared police
conducted enquiries and were
unable to make contact with the
registered owner.
After reasonable time was
given for the owner to remove
the vehicle, a silver Alfa Romeo,
police then contacted Toowoomba
Regional Council for removal
but, because the vehicle was on a
main road, it did not come under
their jurisdiction.
The Department of Main
Roads was then contacted and
they conducted procedures
which also included attempts
to contact the registered owner,
and again, giving a reasonable
amount of time for the vehicle to
be removed.
When, after reasonable time,
it had not been removed, police
said the Main Roads Department
then began procedures for removal
of the vehicle.
Highfields Village shearing shed
opens on Australia Day
Volunteers Scott Wilson, shearer Michael Brigg and manager Ray Ashford
discuss the plans for the shearing shed
This Australia Day volunteers of
Highfields Pioneer Village will officially
open the village shearing shed. The
building was originally a railway goods
shed built in the early 1900s possibly at
Oakey.
In the 1950s it was moved to the
Oakey saleyards to be used as a storage
shed.
It later had a small building added to
one end which was used as a comfort
room for the men booking in the
livestock for sale at night.
This small building was detached
during the removal process and is also at
Pioneer Village in use as their miniature
train station.
The old goods shed was moved to
the village in 2014 with the intention of
converting it to be a two-stand shearing
shed. It is now an authentic replica
of many small shearing sheds built
throughout Queensland and beyond.
The original shearer’s stand came
EVERYDAY SCIENCE with JAMES McKAY
Homeopathy alternative
Homeopathy is an alternative
medicine, founded by Samuel
Hahnemann in 1796. It is based on the
idea that small doses of the cause of an
illness is also the cure for the illness.
A homoeopathic medicine is prepared
by diluting a substance many times over.
Hahnemann created the ‘C’ scale
to explain the dilutions, with 2C for
example being a substance diluted twice.
It is diluted firstly to one part per 100,
then diluted a second time to one part
per 100, which means its final dilution is
1 part in 10,000. 6C is the same process
done six times, while 12C is done 12
times, and so on. Hahneman believed that
more dilutions made the medicine more
potent at curing disease, and he said the
solution has “memory.”
He used 30C for most of his medicines,
but regularly used 300C also.
Scientists estimate that from the
12C and above, there are no longer any
molecules of the original substance left
in the bottle, so the patient is paying
money to take water as a medicine. 13C
for example is about the equivalent of a
one-third of a drop of a substance diluted
into all the water on earth.
A popular homoeo-pathic treatment
for the flu is 200C dilution of duck liver,
and is labelled Oscillococcinum, which is
the equivalent of 1 x 10(400).
Crows Nest Boys and Girls Brigades
Changing of the guards
When Crows Nest
Girls Brigade and
Crows Nest Boys
Brigade resume on
Wednesday, January
31, both groups will
start the year with new
leaders.
Sandy Kahler, who
has been Girls Brigade
Captain since establishing
the group in Crows
Nest over 20 years ago,
is handing over the
reins to Kelsey Pardon,
formerly Kelsey Gaiter.
Captaincy of the Boys
Brigade will be handed
over by David Reinke
to Ben Kahler.
Sandy says her workload
and family commitments
have brought
about her decision to
step aside and she is
thrilled to have such
Sandy Kahler - stepping down after 20 years
a capable person as
Kelsey to take on the
role.
Sandy’s service will
not be lost to the group,
however. She is staying
on in a support role as
deputy leader.
David also hopes his
work commitments will
allow him to still be involved
with the Boys
Brigade from time to
time.
New Girls Brigade
captain Kelsey has been
a member of the brigade
for 19 years since
joining as a six year old.
She worked her way
through the ranks to
become a young leader
and uniform lieutenant
before taking on this
new position.
She is excited to now
be able to offer her services
to lead the group
but admits there are big
shoes to fill after the
dedication and service
Sandy has given to the
local group.
Boys Brigade’s new
leader Ben is a founding
member of the
Crows Nest group.
The two brigades
have a long history of
providing activities for
young people in Crows
Nest.
There are about 1 x 10(80) atoms
in the entire universe, so another 320
universes would be required to make this
dilution possible.
The Australian National Health and
Medicine Research Council says that
homeopathy is not medicine and warns
people that it is completely ineffective at
treating or preventing any condition or
disease. Every medical organisation in
the world says that any positive effects
from this treatment that patients report
are due to the placebo effect.
A study by the World Health
Organisation found that Australians
spent $9.6 million on homeopathy in
2009.
the Anglican Church
Hall before later moving
to their current
premises at the Uniting
Church Hall. Andrea
Schefe and Gillian
Fowler were assistants
to Sandy in the early
days and during the late
1990s to early 2000s,
membership peaked at
57.
At the end of last
year, membership stood
at 37.
in Crows Nest in 2001
under the guidance of
Pastor Frank Rasenberger
as chaplain, John
Hislop as captain and
the late Ray Macdonald
as leader.
At the end of 2017,
Art activities start for the new year
Art activities for 2018 are now firmly in our
‘frame of reference’ with the first six months
packed with workshops, exhibitions and art
shows, all of which will give members and new
comers alike a chance to learn and experience
the joy of creativity.
The first workshop on February 10 with Pam
Shipman will use the pastel medium to draw
and paint. Jane Hoffman will run another of her
popular watercolour workshops on March 10 so
those who couldn’t make it last time have another
opportunity to enjoy a session with Jane.
These workshops are designed to accommodate
the beginning artist so newcomers are
welcome and need not worry about materials as
these are supplied in the cost for the day.
Sessions usually run from 9 to 4 and are held
in the Crows Nest Community and RSL Centre.
The new theme for the Nest Café is ‘Abstracts’
and details of paintings to be displayed
must be with the exhibition organizer by February
2. Feature artist will be Michiko Gustafson.
Dams feature in triathlon idea
Triathlon is a gruelling
pursuit, but it attracts
athletes, supporting teams
and tourists, and such an
event is being proposed
for the Crows Nest area.
Owner of Tweeters
Country Getaway near
Crows Nest, Peter Ferris,
has experience with
the establishment of a
triathlon event at Julie
Creek in North-West
Queensland, and he says
it now attracts 20,000
people to the town.
Mr Ferris said a
triathlon involving the
three dams, Cressbrook,
Perseverance and Cooby,
would be different to
others, and could be a
significant event for the
region.
Triathlon involves
swimming (3km to 5km),
then a cycling stage
(about 100km), finishing
with a run (about 28km).
Mr Ferris is suggesting
an event could start with
a swim across Cressbrook
dam, then the cycling
stage past Perseverance
Dam to Cooby Dam, with
the run back to Crows
Nest.
He has floated the idea
with the Crows Nest
Tourist and Progress
Association, and
Toowoomba Council. He
said most show interest,
but having people commit
to organise the event is
the hard part.
Mr Ferris has suggested
that major events in the
Toowoomba Region
need the assistance of an
organising group, rather
than just volunteers from
the community.
He reminds us that the
Toowoomba Carnival of
Flowers has a dedicated
workforce and suggests
that such a group might
be able to help with
The annual Toowoomba
Swap Meet,
organised by the Darling
Downs Veteran
and Vintage Motor
Club, is being held at
the Toowoomba Showgrounds
on Saturday
and Sunday, February
3 and 4.
2018 will be the 46th
meet which is now
counted among the biggest
three such events
in Australia.
Each year, more than
15,000 people from the
general public attend,
including approximately
1800 site holders
and a volunteer force of
over 540 people.
important events in other
parts of the Toowoomba
Region.
Peter Ferris said he
and his wife Thuy
were passionate about
increasing tourism in the
Crows Nest area.
He said a triathlon had
the potential to put Crows
Nest “on the map” with
a flow-on of business
opportunities throughout
the year.
But he cautioned there
would be quite a bit of
work by many to make
this happen. However the
benefits can be worth it
for all.
The Toowoomba
Swap Meet was originally
organised as a
venue to cater for the
hobby vehicle movement
and the large majority
of items available
there are car related.
Many people though
also buy and sell antique
and collectable
items and two pavilions
have been set aside for
this purpose.
The Berghofer Pavilion
and the Glenvale
Rooms, or Model
Market, house the majority
of the collectables
which range from
glassware and china
ornaments to model and
Cressbrook Dam swim - first leg of triathlon.
In addition to the
main triathlon event, he
suggests that local people
in teams could become
involved in shorter
sections of the course,
and in relays.
“On the same day you
could hold individual legs
for the swim, cycle and
run for those competitors
that wish to only nominate
in single events.”
“Apart from the single
event which benefits the
town and surrounding
businesses, the cycle
section from Crows
Nest and the run section
finishing at Crows Nest
can be used for weekday
and weekend cycle
enthusiasts.”
“These events if done
to a standard can attract
international and national
competitors, and the
‘dirtndust’ event at Julia
Creek which started out
as simple triathlon and
has grown exponentially,”
Mr Ferris said.
“It’s a three-day festival
involving activities such
as horse racing, bog
snorkling, food tasting,
entertainment, a best butt
contest and bull riding.”
46th annual Toowoomba swap meet
toy cars. The Swap operating
hours are from
6am to 6pm on Saturday
12 - HIGH COUNTRY HERALD - JANUARY 23, 2018 To advertise phone 4615 4416

Soil is essential to
life. However, much of
the land used for crops,
pastures and orchards
survives at a level well
below optimum.
At a feedlot at
Jondaryan, work has
started to produce a
compost material that is
expected to breathe new
life into farming soil.
Long term compost
researcher Chris Cameron
is working with Cam
Hart of Hart Farming
Composting Operation,
associated with Kerwee
Feedlot.
Before the first batch
is ready for sale, orders
have already been
received from farmers at
Bundaberg and Hampton
. Mr Cameron has
developed a composting
process that converts
feedlot manure into a
desirable soil and plant
enhancer in just 28 days,
compared to the five to
seven months generally
taken.
Mr Cameron says tests
are done on the soil on
which the compost is to
be applied, and custom
minerals added toward
the end of the 28-day
production process.
These minerals are
ready to go to work
immediately they are
applied to the soil, as
are soil biology species
which are added when
the compost is applied to
the soil, and together they
ensure the plants get the
maximum benefit.
HIGH COUNTRY
FARMING
New compost blend set to enhance soil and crops
So much so that trials
in vegetable crops show
there is no set back for
seedlings after they have
been transplanted.
Kerwee is a pioneering
Australian feedlot which
now concentrates on
producing Wagyu and
Wagyu cross beef.
It has organic certification
and produces
30,000 to 40,000 tonnes
of manure each year,
all of which will be
converted to compost.
Chris Cameron said his
composting method and
the cooking and digesting
process in the windrows,
destroys antibiotics and
growth promotants in
manure from non-organic
feedlots.
The turning process
in the windrow helps to
produce fine particles,
essential for the best
microbial activity in the
soil.
Mr Cameron has
trialled his compost on
bananas in Innisfail,
vegetables in Bowen, and
sugar in the Burdekin, all
successfully.
Indeed, at Bowen he
trebled the output of a
farm within a year, and
given that he was told that
the farm’s average annual
gross was $14 million
then the increase could
well have been worth an
extra $20 million.
Mr Cameron said there
have been suggestions
the future for this new
compost could be huge.
Vegetable production
in the Lockyer Valley
markets. The new Kerwee
Compost increases the
