At the first taste of winter’s chill, we start preparing for
hibernation. Adding warmth to your home, however, is not
just about choosing the right heating, but also the creation of
a scrumptious winter haven that invites you to hunker down
with creature comforts.
A home might be warm and
dry, but as we transition from
summer to winter there is that
lack of cosiness to our homes. By
following a few simple steps you
can enhance and create more
warmth within your home.
Roll out the Rugs
Hardwood floors and tiles are
brilliant during the summer
months, but come winter, your
feet are likely to feel a little
different. Using large rugs in the
main areas of your home will help
to insulate a room and keep your
feet warm. The textured look
of a rug will also add a feel of
cosiness to a room.
Just as you do with winter fashion,
creating warmth in your interiors
is all about adding texture.
In your bedroom, swap your
summer duvet for a thick, plush
winter one, then finish the
look with layers of throws and
cushions.
Invest in good-quality throws.
Choose a few that match the
décor in your home, and then
literally throw them over couches
and beds. The more they look
like you just dropped them on
the couch or bed, the better they
look – hence the name ‘throw’!
There is a great range of cosy
faux-fur throws on the market
this winter, too.
If you don’t already have one,
get a footstool. If you have one,
recover it in durable thick fabric –
we love a good tartan print.
let the light in
When sunlight passes through the
glass of your window it bounces
off your walls and furniture, and
gradually turns into heat. This
heat will make a big difference to
the temperature of your home.
To make the most of it, open
your blinds or curtains in the
morning, and close them back up
at night.
Lighting is important to set
the scene. A few lamps dotted
around living spaces will provide
the relaxed, low-level lighting
ideal for such areas. Add sparkle
at night-time with fairy lights, and
some flickering candles for an
intimate feel.
