New ZealaNd Rock Royalty
– Jordan Luck
after 16 years, Jordan Luck has released a new album, Not Only… But Also, and is set to tour
the country this month. He talks to Victoria Tait about the new album,
his favourite music and his most important possession.
Jordan luck is one of New Zealand’s
pop legends, famous for being
the frontman and writer for the
exponents. He has had a staggering
18 top 40 singles over the years, with
Victoria – a personal favourite of mine
– recently voted by the public as the
eighth greatest New Zealand song of
all time. His song Why Does Love Do
This To Me? has become the ‘unofficial’
alternative to the New Zealand
national anthem.
Jordan has had the honour of being
placed in the New Zealand Rock ’n’
Roll Hall of Fame and, in 2012, was
appointed a Member of the New
Zealand order of Merit for services
to music.
a true legend in his own right he
now fronts the Jordan luck Band. the
members of this band were handpicked
by Jordan, from a wish list he
created.the new band comprises
of Jordan luck on Vocals, Bryan Bell
(ex-frontman of the dead Flowers)
on Guitar, Beaver Pooley (formerly of
d4) on drums, Rich Mixture (formerly
of d4, dead Flowers and many more),
and Joe walsh (frontman of ekko Park).
It has been a long wait, but after 16
years Jordan has just released a new
album – Not Only… But Also. the album
caused a bit of a media stir when the
band announced they would get the
New Zealand public to decide on its
name. after much debating and the fact
that every member of the band chose a
different title, the name Not Only...
But Also was finally decided upon by a
secret vote. Jordan says he was drawn
to the ambiguity of the title, “and dick
Frizzell brought the album to life with his
cover design.”
Jordan tells Style the process he goes
through when writing and finding lyrics
for a song can be a mixture of personal
experiences and stories that he might
have heard. “one of the songs is based
on story I heard about murder in lake
tekapo, and another is a funny one
about a guy in hospital,” Jordan says of
the new album.
the Jordan luck Band will be in
christchurch at the carlton on May
23rd, to release their new album as part
of New Zealand Music month.
