GO DOWN to Cranmer
Square and you’ll see an
incredibly moving scene.
There are 3200 crosses there
– the number of Cantabrians
who died in the first three
years of the Great War, a war
that was meant to end all
wars.
Yesterday, reporter Bridget
Rutherford and photographer
Martin Hunter spoke to
104-year-old Bill Mitchell, a
World war 2 vet at Cranmer
Square who is leading the
Anzac Day parade in 12 days.
I’ve always admired the Bill
Mitchell’s of this world – sent
across the seas as young men
to fight in battles, many of
them who would never return
home.
For many it was an
adventure; the camaraderie of
being in a team, seeing new
places and having a lot of fun.
But that all turned to custard
pretty quick, and those crosses
in Cranmer Square define
what war brings to many –
death.
