President’s Report
Colin Smith, President USLBA
As I reported in the 2007 autumn
issue, we are seeking the services of a CEO
to aid in running the organization.
To date, we have had no success in
our search. If you have interest or know
of someone who could fill this position
please let me know.
Our Webmaster has launched our new web site at
www.uslba.org - be sure to bookmark it in your Favorites.
Internationally; while we were all disappointed in not
qualifying for World Bowls, please join me in congratulating
Team USA men’s team of Bob Schneider, Chris Booth,
Richard Broad and Bill Brault, in winning the China Open
last March. Details of their win can be found on the USLBA
website. Also, on the women’s side, Rosa Gandara has been
ranked number seven in the world rankings.
Due to our financial standing, it was decided to reduce
almost all support for our national team at our last meeting.
Primary support will now come from Golden Bias members.
Please spread the word and become a member of Golden Bias
and aid in supporting the efforts of our International players.
As travelling costs begin to rise, your support of the team is
needed even more. Colin
Costa Mesa area south of Los Angeles during October 13-18.
Senior Games at Palo Alto
By Terry Hogan
The United States’ largest participatory multi-sport event
makes its West Coast debut in the San Francisco Bay Area from
August 1-15, 2009. More than 13,000 athletes over the age of
50 are expected to take part in the games headquartered in Palo
Alto. Through the efforts of the Palo Alto City Council and Palo
Alto LBC, lawn bowling will be included as a demonstration
sport for the first time. Our goal is for lawn bowling to become
a medal sport. Palo Alto will host a Men’s Pairs August 3-4 and
a Women’s Pairs August 5-6. There will also be a Fun Triples
Draw on August 7. To learn more about the Senior Games go
to www.2009seniorgames.org. To be a contestant, contact Terry
Hogan at etelhogan@comcast.net. To learn more about the Palo
Lawn Bowling’s “Characters with Character”
Isabella Forbes
By George J. Schick
With a professional
and lawn bowling life
that has spanned the
USA, Isabella Forbes
or “Izzie” as she is affectionately
known,
has experienced many
things.
She was born
i n Mo n t c l a i r N J
o n O c t o b e r 3 1 .
Her thoughts on a
Halloween birthday
- “As a kid, it proved to
be profitable when trick
or treating. When a person
found out it was my
birthday I usually received money instead of the usual candy.”
Professionally, she spent almost 20 years working for E. J.
Korvettes with opportunities to travel throughout the US as
they expanded their business. When they ceased operations,
Izzie joined Prudential Insurance working in health insurance
administration. She was well respected by managers and
coworkers alike for her ability to teach fellow employees their
job requirements while providing customers with outstanding
service. After 17 years with the Prudential, her position was
re-located to the West Coast and she moved to the Los Angeles
area. She remained with Prudential for an additional 3 years.
Izzie began bowling at the Essex County Lawn Bowling
Club in Bloomfield NJ at the age of 11. She served in various
roles including Games Committee Chair and was elected the
first female President of the Essex club. In addition, she was
one of the founding members of the Edison Indoor Lawn
Bowling Club established by Hall of Fame member Bill Farrell.
She also served as President, Treasurer, Tournament Chair and
Councilor for the Eastern Division of the AWLBA, as well as
councilor and President of the USLBA. When her employment
required a move to the West Coast, Izzy was named an
Honorary Life Member of the Essex Club in recognition of her
outstanding service and in deep appreciation of the publicity
the club received as a result of her administrative and playing
efforts at all levels.
Izzie has won various tournaments at all levels of lawn bowling
highlighted by seven wins in United States Championships.
Namely; U.S. Open Women’s Pairs in 1980, 1981 & 1986; U.S.
Open Women’s Triples in 1974, 1980 & 1986. In addition,
she won the U.S. Championship Women’s Pairs in 1992. Izzie
represented the Northeastern Division in the United States
Championships twelve times between 1982 and 1999 before
she relocated to Long Beach California.
She was selected to be a member of Team USA in the
Tweed Heads Bicentennial World bowls event in Melbourne
Australia in addition to serving as Team Manager at the Asia
Pacific Games, World Bowls and the Atlantic Rim Games. She
was elected to the USLBA Hall of Fame in 2002 in recognition
of her prowess in bowling and administration.
When asked “Who were your lawn bowling role models?”
Izzie responded, “My role models started with my father John,
who was my inspiration to actually get started. He taught me to
deliver a bowl smoothly without dumping and warned me that
if your dump the bowl, you are OFF THE GREEN. The other
role models for me would have to be Skippy Arculli, Duncan
Farrell, Dave Dakers, Bill Farrell (who actually really got me
interested in the running of tournaments) as well as Pat Boehm
who took me on when I started bowling internationally.”
What is good or bad about lawn bowling? “It is a lifetime
of learning and one of the best ways to meet all types of people
in all walks of life. No matter where you go you are always
welcomed and greeted with friendship. It is a great outlet when
you need to get away from happenings in your life that makes
it seem unbearable, you can either call a fellow bowler to join
you in a social game or just get out there by yourself, taking
your mind off things bothering you.”
Her hopes for its future? “My biggest hope for bowling
would be that it becomes a well known sport all over the world
and that younger people would learn that it truly is a sport for
all ages. One of my greatest thrills was being able to play in
triples events with my nephews Lowell and Adam when they
were just big enough to hold a bowl in their hands. Right now
the future of Lawn Bowling hangs on the members that we
currently have going out and selling this great sport to as many
people as they can. As a child when I started out, it was my
father that kept me going and had it not been for him taking me
into tournament play I most likely would not have been able to
get teams to play with. We need to encourage new bowlers and
get them involved in our sport because without new members
we cannot survive”.
Author’s Note: I have had the good fortune to bowl with Izzie
in many Mixed Pairs tournaments. I believe she is an excellent
partner and I admire her ability to perfectly balance the desire to
win each match and the love of our sport and its players.
Editor’s Note: I love the piece about the dumping of the bowl.
Editorial
Plenty to write about
by Trevor Colby, Editor
Praise, kudos and congratulations are due to the Southwest
Division for its very successful recruiting drive that resulted
in many Open houses on May 10, each attracting scores of
visitors, many of whom were converted into members on the
spot. I thought the tactic employed by some clubs in opening
a PayPal credit card account was a masterstroke, and to use it
in conjunction with a ‘Closer’ was something that could have
come straight out of a gangster movie scene in the glory days
of Hollywood.
On April 7 the Rossmoor club in the Pacific Inter-Mountain
Division informed the President of its division that when it hosts
its part of the U.S. Open during September 12-18, its Board
of Directors will have an inspection team of three persons to
ensure proper player attire that will include smooth, flat soled
shoes. If one does not pass inspection, they will not be allowed
on our greens regardless of a paid entry fee. Rossmoor included
the following rider in its letter - “You may feel free to move the
tournament to another site if you feel our requirements present
a hardship or are unreasonable. We hope that our division can
comply with the USLBA Dress Code so that Rossmoor will have
the privilege of entertaining the PIMD and the USLBA.” It is
to be hoped that all clubs will follow Rossmoor’s example.
Informal clothing is to be encouraged for daily club bowling
but whenever tournaments are played, the USLBA dress
code should be used. It is comparable to entering combat
Advertising Manager
I wish to receive applications from
those who believe they are capable
of selling advertising space in this
magazine. This is a position that is
very important in helping to maintain
our finances in a healthy condition.
Bowls USA Summer 2008
when you cover yourself in the proper attire to promote your
confidence.
Further discussion of the dress code is in order because it
fails to address the subject of outer wear that could be worn in
cold or wet weather. How many times have we seen immaculately
attired players in team colors totally in accordance with
the dress code, turn into an unidentifiable bunch when their
inclement weather clothing is donned?
The dress code should stipulate that outer wear should be
either of team colors or white, and that all members of the team
must wear the same color at the same time.
I notice that in some Open Tournaments the Men play a
different format to the Women. It is generally considered that
Fours is the ‘crème de la crème’ of team games and yet not all
men have accepted the challenge of the two bowl game whereas
women do not seem to have developed the same problem.
When questions are asked, the reply is often the same old - “I
need that extra bowl.” Perhaps women are more adaptable and
able to amalgamate better with another Pairs team to make up
a Four.
My wonderful friend and companion Joy Sinclair, who
loves solving the Cryptoquote which is a coded quotation by
a famous person published daily in the St. Petersburg Times,
informed me of the solution to the puzzle a few hours after I
finished composing this editorial. It happened to be by Kingsley
Amis who said, “If you can’t annoy somebody with what you
write, I think there’s little point in writing.” I think I might
have just done the trick.
I wish to thank Woody Ogden, our recently retired staff
correspondent of the PIMD for the wonderful service he has
given to Bowls USA over many years. In recognition of his
dedication to bowls in many capacities he has been presented
with the prestigious “USLBA President’s Award.”
I am very pleased to announce that John Hickson of Palo
Alto LBC has kindly agreed to accept the position of divisional
correspondent for the PIMD that became vacant due to the
retirement of Woody Ogden.
We are fortunate to acquire John’s services because he
already has experience in contributing to the magazine by way
of being the previous Palo Alto club correspondent and also
compiling his club’s monthly newsletter. John spent his entire
working life of 37 years engaged in various sales management
positions with Unilever and this experience has no doubt helped
him and his club in promoting the sport locally to the effect that
membership has increased to 150 and is still growing.
BETTER BOWLS
Tips and tidbits for improving
and enjoying your game
By Conrad Melton, USLBA Chief Umpire
It’s quiz time, but not for you old
timers. If you consider yourself a relative
newcomer to the game, perhaps you’ve
wondered about some of these questions.
1. What is the best solution if you
find yourself regularly delivering your
bowl not on your aiming line?
2. Who keeps score in Pairs?
Conrad Melton 3. If you’re lead B in triples and lead
A has left his bowl about two feet from the jack at about the
eight o’clock position, (using the jack as the center of a clock
face,) and you roll the bowl with your right hand, should you
roll it forehand or backhand?
4. May lead A place the mat at the hog line on the first
end of a game?
5. A bowl that is not a toucher rebounds off the backboard
and comes to rest on the rink. Is it live or dead?
6. There is a sure fire technique for accurately rolling the
jack. What is it?
7. When all is said and done, there is very little value to
bowl chasing. True or False?
8. What is the minimum distance for a jack to be legal
and how much of the jack must be beyond that minimum
distance? Any of it or All of it.
9. If you’re the vice of a triples team and you signal the
score but your skip isn’t paying attention, are you expected to
signal the score again?
10. If you’re skipping a triples team and your team has the
hammer, when the other skip walks to the mat end to roll his
first bowl, are you required to walk with him?
11. You’re the lead in a club triples tournament. You’ve
rolled your three bowls and want to go to the head end. The
rink next to the one you’re playing on is vacant. May you walk
to the head on that rink?
12. True or False. If any part of a bowl touches any part of
the painted metal or plastic rink sideline marker it is considered
in bounds.
13. You’re playing in a tournament and the Tournament
Director rings the bell indicating that you may finish the end
you’re playing, but no new ends may be started. A minute later
the jack gets knocked out of bounds. Is the match over or may
you re-roll the jack and complete the end you were playing?
14. What happens when the jack is hit and goes over the
backboard and off the green?
15. You should perfect a single delivery style and use it for
everything. True or False?
Bowls USA Summer 2008
And the answers are…
1. Greatly exaggerate your follow through. Push your arm
out there until it is horizontal and parallel to the green. Success
requires you to be able to pick the correct aiming point which
comes from knowing your bowls.
2. The skip.
3. Forehand. If you go backhand, you may bump your opponent
into the jack.
4. Yes. This is a relatively new rule.
5. Dead.
6. Practice.. Fifteen minutes of jack rolling every two or three
weeks will make you a champion jack deliverer.
7. False. Many people don’t understand why good bowlers
chase their bowls. In fact, by doing so, they can see exactly the
distance and angles of every bowl in the head. This gives them
a considerable advantage over someone who doesn’t quite know
what he’s shooting at because he’s too far away to see the head
clearly. Bowl chasers are a team’s hero because he’s sacrificing
his body to always be acutely aware of the precise distances and
relationships of bowls in the head. For those who consider bowl
chasers a distraction…get to work on your focus. You definitely
need to train yourself to NOT be distracted when you’re on the
mat.
8. The entire jack must be beyond the minimum distance
of 75 feet, five and one half inches (23 meters).
9. Of course you are.
10. No. Not in the United States. Some international jurisdictions
are quite snooty about their vision of “decorum,” (some
still require women to wear skirts and men to wear ties when they
bowl). But here it is quite OK to hang around in the head and
see what happens when your opponent rolls his first bowl. It’s the
same idea as bowl chasing, but running is not required.
11. No you may not. If you didn’t chase your third bowl, you
must choose a path to the head that has no chance of distracting
the remaining bowlers on your rink.
12. No, no, no. Sideline markers can be two inches wide.
The edge of the rink is an infinitely thin line, going only from
the absolute center of the sideline marker to the absolute center
of its opposite on the other bank.
13. You’re done Buddy. Whatever the score was before you
started that end is the final score of the game.
14. When the jack leaves the green the end is dead.
15. OMG, no. You can’t use the same delivery on fast and
slow greens. For fast greens you need a small step (or perhaps no
step at all!) and on slow greens you need a very large and exaggerated
step. Your backswing will be tiny on fast greens, gigantic
on slow ones. Many good players synchronize their downswing
and step to occur at the same time on very slow greens. This
gives them far greater inertia and force than using the traditional
step, then downswing. A slow green is 8 to 10 seconds, fast can
be 14 and up. The greens in New Zealand can be as high as 21.
Bottom line: in order to be able to adjust to vastly varying playing
conditions, it is not uncommon for good players to have three
very different delivery styles.
Honor the Laws Of The Sport Of Bowls:
they make the game the same.
Another Man’s Poison
Frank Ransome
So there isn’t enough gas to go around and many vacations
will have to be taken at home rather than at the resort of choice.
This could be terrible for a lot of people, but it could be good
news for lawn bowlers. Perhaps this is the time to redouble our
efforts to rebuild our lawn bowling clubs. As long as it’s too expensive
to go to the local Golf Club, people might be talked into
becoming lawn bowlers. We are an outdoor sport that doesn’t cost
much and we are local. The entire family could get in the family
car and drive a couple of miles to enjoy themselves. Maybe you
were a golf widow, but now you can be the SKIP of the family
team. You worked downtown and couldn’t wait to get away on
vacation. Now you could be on a team, bowl at least twice a week
and be on a vacation every day after work.
This isn’t a farfetched scheme or something dreamed up by
your membership chairman. This is pure fact. With gas approaching
$5.00 a gallon why not join the fun being had at the nearest
lawn bowling club. Lessons are reasonable, second hand bowls
are just as good as new ones and some clubs have lights for night
bowling. Even without the lights we can bowl until 8:30 pm during
the summer months and most of the day on weekends.
Why send the kids to an expensive day camp when they can
be enrolled in a local lawn bowling program at very little expense.
Recreation Departments should be aware that there is a place in
the city that has room to spare on most days and certainly would
cater to large groups. The bowlers would have to bring their own
leaders with them but the club can furnish lessons and equipment.
Most clubs and certainly most divisions have plenty of bowls that
can be rented. Bowling clubs have parking so car pools would be
acceptable and would keep the cost down. We as lawn bowlers
can feel sorry for those neighbors who can’t travel this year, but
they might enjoy being asked to lawn bowl with us.
There could be a back side to the gas shortage. Some of
our bowlers travel some distance to bowl and may have second
thoughts about making the trip if they are not sure of having
a good time. Maybe your club will have to extend its hours so
bowlers can spend 3 or 4 hours on the green and not commute
as often. Some clubs may go to two draws a day on fewer days
to please the commuters and others open for evening bowling to
accommodate more bowlers. There are several older clubs and at
least three new clubs that have been looking at synthetic surfaces.
Unfortunately most of these surfaces have a petroleum base and
must be carted many miles from factory to installation. It isn’t
as apparent as it once was that artificial can cost less than natural
grass. Here in California there is a drought that has to be taken
into consideration and that could mean less maintenance and
certainly less water. I suggest aerating several times each year to
keep those little pipelines open to the roots of your grass.
Let’s roll with the times and change some of our thinking.
Bowling after work isn’t easy if we have to change into whites
before going on the green. Tournaments could be held on a daily
basis and kept shorter. Why not promote car pools or select team
members that live close to each other. We could set our training
schedule so that the novices can find rides back and forth to the
green. Most of all we can show the world that lawn bowling can
save money and water and that it takes more than a gas shortage
to keep bowlers from having a good time. We Lawn Bowlers
should be looking up while the rest of the country is down in
the dumps.
Ask The Rules Guy
John Stewart
(John Stewart was for many years
the U.S chief umpire and is now
Chairman of Rules for USLBA.)
The questions in this issue are taken from magazines which
I picked up during a recent trip to Australia.
Question 1. A bowl comes to rest and then falls over and
touches the jack while the next bowl is in course. The
skip moves forward to mark it as a toucher to which the
opposing skip objects. Is the bowl a toucher? How would
you rule?
Question 2. A Player in team A suggests that a bowl is out.
Skip A checks it and picks it up agreeing that it is out.
The opposing skip B objects. An umpire is called to make
a ruling. You are that umpire called in to make a ruling
knowing that this is always a difficult situation and you
must be careful with your ruling as several laws may be
necessary before you can make a final decision.
Question 3. What happens when a bowl in its original course
is displaced by a member of the team that delivered the
bowl and it has not disturbed the head? You are called in
for a ruling.
Question 4. What happens when a bowl in its original course
is displaced by an opponent of the player who delivered
the bowl and has not disturbed the head? You are called in
for a ruling and must quote what options are available for
the violated team.
Question 5. Can the positions of players be altered after the
first end has been completed? How would you rule?
Question 6. What happens if the positions of the players are
changed during the game and no substitute is necessary?
How would you rule?
397 Sign Up On Open House Day In Southwest Division
By Joe Siegman
If the Southwest Division’s May 10 “Saturday on the Green”
Open House promotion was a show business event, the showbiz
daily Variety would have headlined it a “Boffo-Socco Smash
Hit.” How else could you describe the signing-up of 397 new
bowlers on a single day?
Led by huge successes at Santa Barbara’s MacKenzie Park
(60 new members), Newport Harbor LBC (50) and Laguna
Beach LBC (40), the So. Cal. division-wide Open House promotion
saw all but four SWD LBCs participating on May 10.
It was the first time a promotional event of this magnitude with
participating clubs from southernmost San Diego to Cambria
in the north had been attempted. Several clubs made their
Open House an evening affair. At least one conducted theirs
on Sunday May 11 and another on both weekend days.
The Open Houses garnered a fairly even split between
genders, but there was a noticeably younger group of new
enthusiasts. Prospects were encouraged to bring their teens
and pre-teens to give the feeling of family sport. Many of the
participating clubs set up special areas and assigned volunteers
to keep young children occupied while parents were learning
on the green.
The basic Open House plan deployed by the SWD, successfully
developed by the Newport Harbor LBC several years
ago, provided the primary guidelines for SWD clubs, but there
were localized modifications here and there to meet specific
situations.
One of the unique variations took place on L.A.’s Westside,
where neighboring clubs, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica (3.5
miles apart) collaborated on a combined Open House at the
Beverly Hills green. The clubs were able to pool their organizational
talents, promotional dollars and volunteer power “for
the common good of getting prospects interested in the game,
not the individual club,” explained Open House chairman Bill
Wolff.
“All of our 33 sign-ups were given special rate dual memberships
at both clubs for the remainder of the year. The reduced
rate,” added Wolff, “was possible because the Division picked
up the tab for National and Division dues. These new bowlers
if they want to, can bowl seven days a week at one or the other
club, and when 2009 comes along, make a decision about which
of the two clubs, perhaps both, they wish to join for the regular
membership rate.”
In quite a few situations local Parks & Recreation departments
jumped into the Open House fray and participated in
absorbing some or all of the costs of advertising in neighborhood
media as well as producing promotional flyers. In other situations,
the clubs them-selves invested their own finances in the
potential of the Open House promotion, including printing,
signage, shirts and/or caps, food, refreshments and mailings.
Explained men’s SWD president Mert Isaacman who
Bowls USA Summer 2008
fostered the Division-wide promotion: “We felt we had to put
forth an aggressive campaign to bring in a significant number
of new people to our sport. No one was knocking on our door.
We had to knock on theirs. Frankly, I never dreamed we would
be this successful.”
Next year’s “A Day on the Green” Open House has already
been scheduled for the day before Mother’s Day, as it was this
year. Looking back, Division leadership believes that stimulus
from the SWD’s spirited participation in the 2006 AARP “Life
@ 50+” convention in Anaheim CA laid the foundation for the
Open House success.
“The AARP event got our people interested in participating
in activities that promoted the sport,” says SWD Councilor
Sam DeLisle. “We were amazed by the volunteer turnout for
the AARP. An even larger number of men and women grass
roots bowlers were now ready to involve themselves in the
Open Houses.”
As a follow-up to the Open House weekend, August 9-10
have been designated as a weekend of regional Novice/Veteran
Tournament Picnics. General plans are for each of the seven
SWD Districts to host the day for its constituent clubs, featuring
a competition, prizes, lunch or dinner. Practically, some clubs
will host their own new member fun day, but the idea is to make
the May 10 group comfortable in their new surroundings and
to keep them involved.
The successful Open House guidelines, best described as a
business-like approach to membership recruitment are no secret.
These guidelines are available to peruse and use at trylawnbowling.com
and Division Open House Chairman Len Cormier is
available to answer inquiries at the same web site.
A Step In The Right Direction
By Steve Nelson
Barefoot bowls is not so much about bowling barefoot,
although that is permitted, as it is about marketing bowls to a
new generation. This pay-to-play phenomenon promotes opportunities
for open bowling, corporate days or group events.
Barefoot bowls emphasizes fun and camaraderie in a relaxed
environment that appeals to groups of friends and coworkers
who are looking for an activity to do together. The term is designed
to break through the stereotypes about lawn bowling in
a manner that communicates energy, youthfulness and innovation,
appealing to people or groups who would not otherwise
venture onto the green.
A quick search on Google reveals 4,510 websites devoted
to “barefoot bowls”. Many may not have anything to do with
lawn bowls, but a good number are showcasing this latest
trend in bowls.
Newbiebowls.com highlights a fresh approach to bowls
taken in Cape Town, South Africa. Tom van Vlaanderen, one
of Newbiebowls founders, reports that even at his club of over
200 bowlers, only barefoot bowls is experiencing any growth
in participation. “We feel that bowls is in desperate need of a
‘breath of fresh air’ and believe that the game’s potential has not
come close to being realized. We are determined to take this
opportunity and the game of bowls to the next level.”
In Australia, Barefoot Bowls NSW appeals to corporate team
building activities by listing these advantages: breaks down barriers
in a fun, participative way; improves communication and
teamwork; boosts morale; highlights the diversity of interaction
skills within a team. It also promotes interpersonal relationships;
improves concentration; creates respect for differing work styles
and personalities; identifies the dynamics and behavior traits of
high performing teams; refines hand-eye co-ordination; gains
fitness at a walking pace; and develops team spirit.
We don’t have to go to South Africa or Australia for new
ideas on promoting bowls. Jefferson Park in Seattle has two
highly successful groups called “Men with Big Bowls” and “Bowl
Busters.” These two leagues are attracting much younger bowlers
than traditional recruitment efforts in the past.
Lawn bowls is a product that can be marketed to a new
generation of bowlers. Barefoot bowls kicks the heels off of tradition,
requiring new and creative thinking, lots of trial and error
and generous effort. Local clubs have the ideas. We just need
to share them with one another. Send your ideas to your Bowls
USA correspondent who can include them in your division
news. Let’s learn from one another, provide better promotion
for this game we love and get more bowlers on the green.
The annual spring luncheon held in April functions as
both a social and organizational event. With 40 members in
attendance President Joan Lunden announced our schedule of
activities for the coming season. As in previous years Fernleigh
will have a series of Pairs matches on Monday and Wednesday
nights as well as a full complement of weekend tournaments.
Membership continues to be a challenge. Three of our long
time skips, Ted Laski, John Rowlson & David Bradley have
elected not to bowl this year. On the positive side, three former
bowlers have rejoined us either as a result of improved health
or returning to Connecticut. In addition there are four new
potential members. As a private club with modest revenues
and ineligible for public maintenance, the membership has to
undertake all those tasks that time and physical ability permit.
A strong turnout for the April annual spring cleanup now has
the Club in good condition to welcome all visitors.
in, we expect to be hosting a record number of bowlers from
overseas and from around the U.S. In the first weeks of this
season we’ve had visits from members of west coast clubs and
from Australia and Britain.
We hosted two fun events in June; our annual joint party
with the New York Croquet Club when we have a good time
trying each other’s games, and bowling on a Sunday afternoon
with members of the Ardsley Curling Club.
Our third annual Venus-Mars tournament was held April
12 and the result was inconclusive because Mars won the first
round 2-1, but in the second round Mother Nature intervened
with a thunderstorm that ended the match. Speculation is that
she did not like the odds with two members of the Venus team
playing with broken bones that were still mending.
Dan Berg defeated Charles Wynder in the final round of
the Let Jack Lie Tournament on April 26-27. Fourteen bowlers
participated in the two day tournament in which the players
must bowl to a minimum distance jack wherever it stops in the
rink after it is rolled.
Lew LeCompte & Carol Wynder captured the Alden Eaton-
Dick Mahone Pairs Tournament on May 3-4 with a 4-0 record.
This tournament is named after Colonial Williamsburg’s former
Landscape Architect Alden Eaton and Director of Landscape
Dick Mahone. Both were instrumental in the growth of the
club and Dick Mahone designed and supervised the installation
of the club green.
Williamsburg retained the home field advantage to win the
Williamsburg Invitational Tournament on May 24-25. Four
clubs with three teams each: DuPont, Frick Park, Pinehurst and
Williamsburg competed in a round robin on the first day followed
by a finals round on Sunday. Williamsburg and Pinehurst bowled
in the finals with Williamsburg winning 4-2. Ed Reynolds and
Dan Berg had a 5-0 record for the tournament
This season, we will be trying something new with our
Club Singles Tournament. We have two flights for the men
and two for the women. We are running this tournament from
April 1 to August 30. It is under the control of the individual
players and they can play anyone in their flight. We’ll end up
with the four winners having a playoff. The A Flight winners
will play each other and so will the B Flight winners. After that,
the two remaining players will play each other for the Club
Championship. In May we completed our Rinks Tournament.
Starting out with 6 teams, double elimination brought us to
2 teams and finally to the winning team of Louis Pettey, Ed
Guillete, Marie Seebode & Howie Parker. Howie was in the hospital
and told them he had to get out because he had to play in
this tournament the next day—he made it, thank goodness.
On Memorial Day we played our Sadie Hawkins Games.
All the men’s names were put into a hat and the women were
the team captains and drew from the hat for their man. It was a
fun time and then we went to the clubhouse for lunch together.
In June we played the Pairs Tournament; July-Triples; August &
Sept is fun game time - cut-throat, etc. September 6-7 we have
the Maryland Senior Olympics. Anyone visiting the Washington
DC area is welcome to come and play with us.
NORTHWEST DIVISION & CLUB NEWS
Woodland Park-Seattle
By Jeffrey Covell
Campus Day in late April set the table for the bowling
season ahead. This inaugural event was a well attended gathering
of club members who tended to the clubhouse, the greens,
and everything in between, all the while stealing glances at the
newest and most attractive member of the club- our green and
shiny Turfco F15B Mete-R-Matic Top Dresser- thanks entirely
to the generosity of Jefferson Park’s Tadsie Priebe.
We started the NWD tournament schedule by hosting
the Short Jack Pairs showdown in May. Ten teams took part
and the results were: 1-George Poor (Woodland Park) & Nita
Chambers (Jefferson Park). 2-Richard Krueger (Jefferson Park)
& Jeffrey Covell (Woodland Park).
Soon after this event ended, the clouds in Seattle parted. It
was then, as it is now, and we hope it shall be ever more, that we
find ourselves basking in sunshine and the new membership it
draws. The newcomers are passers-by mostly, innocent people
who left their house for a walk in the park, never thinking they
would cause a spike in Grippo sales and forever fret about line
and weight once they made that fateful stop by our greens.
To comfort them as they learn to marry the two opposing yet
complementary forces of bowls, we point to the new Turfco
F15B, promising them it will help everything.
The Park System has been upgrading Wright Park and in
the process it took out the hedge that surrounded the green
and put in a wrought iron fence. They also replaced the grass
around the edge of the green. In the park they removed some
trees and planted others and painted the statues, lions and
maidens. After they finished, they had a grand reopening of the
Park. At this time we showed people how to bowl and how to
play bocce. Lots of people came by to see what was going on.
After a long wet winter, our members decided it was time
to go to the tropics for Opening Day. Flaunting our floral shirts
and fancy hats, we circled the greens lead by Pied Piper and
member Andy Sodt. On the signal from our games co-chair
Chris Davis, the entire club rolled their first ceremonial bowl
to the jack in the middle of the green. Other creative games
ensued, including a try at blind bowling with the bowler
wearing a party mask (eye holes blocked of course) while their
partner lined them up, giving them clues and we all came away
with a better appreciation of good eye-sight. A Caribbean style
feast completed our morning of revelry and we got down to
business for the draw game in the afternoon. More than half
of our 130 members came out to celebrate the beginning of
bowling season.
To tune up members for our regular summer roster of
leagues, games and tournaments, our experienced bowlers put
together a “Bowling Boot Camp” (BBC) that was perfect for
beginners and long-term bowlers wanting to improve their
game. BBC sprung from a set of skill drills found on the internet
which grew into a three day course beginning with an entertaining
lecture by Richard Broad on game play, sportsmanship,
etiquette and strategy. The first evening focused on lawn bowling
fundamentals, the second evening instructors taught advanced
skills and game strategy and the third evening was the seven
station skill tests. Each night was attended by 20-30 members,
some brand-new with never having held a bowl in their hands
and some with years of experience. Our resident “experts” have
all played at national competitions and graciously shared their
expertise and love for the game.
An event like this could not have been possible without
strong leaders coordinating the development of the course syllabus,
organizing the 10 person team of instructors, and holding
nightly debriefs on the sessions. Janice Bell (a new bowler in
2007) and Chris Davis were those amazing leaders who took
an idea and turned it into an incredible event.
We put on an open house for three consecutive Saturdays
ending May 24. The general public had free lessons and practice
each day. Club members put fliers in supermarkets and libraries,
visited five retirement homes and three senior centers as well as
giving out 50 fliers to residential homes. Our recruiting drive netted
several new members and there are some more possibles.
A lot of the public had never heard of our club that was
established in 1976. This is mainly our own fault but it doesn’t
help that our green is not visible from a road and is at the back
of a large park.
Past experience tells us that we need not less than 35 active
bowlers (those who bowl at least twice a week) in order than we
can host teams from Seattle and Canada.
Sadly our two times past President Dave Robb passed away
this spring. This is the second strong President we have lost in
recent years and we are still recovering from the loss of these
valuable and dedicated members.
We are looking for a used ride-around roller. Does anyone
have any suggestions?
At one time, Bowls USA allowed clubs to list couples who
consented to receiving a single copy. This may have worked
well in some clubs, but often club secretaries would assume
consent and put all couples on their mail lists. We then received
complaints from some spouses, mostly wives, that they never
saw the magazine!
Shortly after the separate men’s and women’s national lawn
bowls associations merged in 2000, we decided that all USLBA
members should receive a copy of the USLBA magazine. At
that time it cost us about 25 cents to bulk mail each copy (additional
costs for printing extra copies could be calculated in
pennies), so the USLBA Council decided that doing the right
thing by treating all members equally in this matter was worth
the small extra expense.
The best way to reduce the USLBA subsidy that now goes
to publish Bowls USA is to obtain more businesses to buy
advertisements in the magazine. If all national and divisional
officers of USLBA would take on the challenge and work as
hard as Bowls USA Business Manager Michael Maneilly has in
selling ads, we might be able someday to pay all our magazine
costs with ad revenues.
the time and inclination to practice (even though I work full
time); it wasn’t because I couldn’t concentrate on the aiming
line and it certainly wasn’t because it made me more competitive
against fellow bowlers.
The narrow grip on the bowl allows me to grip and deliver
the bowl correctly rather than rolling a “potato bowl” because
the width didn’t fit my hand. It allows me to play in May on
an eight second green in the Northwest instead of waiting until
July to begin playing on a 12 second green. It allows me to stay
off anti-inflammatory medication because my bowl can actually
reach the end of the rink without dislocating my shoulder!
I really enjoy watching a good bowler deliver their bowl and
watching the drawing skills of a top notch bowlers but if it comes
down to bowling or not bowling give me an NBB any day.
Bowls and Brews
Respecting this great game
During a recent conversation with a bowler about respecting
the game and your opponents, it hit us that part of this game has
been lost with the passing of the old-timers we grew up playing
with and learning from. This was not a brand new bowler we
were talking to, but he is a fairly new bowler and we had this
conversation because he had heard that we did not like him and
we wanted to know why.
Now everyone who knows us knows that one of us is diplomatic
and the other one is more likely to take a swing. We won’t
tell those of you who don’t know us well which is which. We
were happy to be asked this question by this bowler because we
were able to tell him exactly what we disapproved of regarding
his actions on the green. We have watched him in the last three
or four years put down his lead; leave the green during a game
to have a beer and have to be summoned when it was his turn
to bowl, taunt opponents and tell an opponent after losing a
game that he really didn’t care and wasn’t even trying. We told
him his actions showed a complete lack of respect for his opponents
and a complete lack of respect for the game itself. We
were stunned when he told us that no one had ever talked to him
about respecting the game or his opponents before. I mean we
were stunned! Isn’t that lawn bowls 101? If we remember right,
this was part of the same lesson as the little circle is the bias side
and you have to get close to the white one called the jack! Now
since this conversation, which ended with a handshake (the diplomatic
brother took charge), we were concerned that perhaps
this lesson isn’t being taught to new bowlers, so we decided we
would like to write this column for Bowls USA. We hope this
helps everyone playing this game, especially the new talented
bowlers we’ve met out there who should eventually represent this
country in international events. And bring home prizes!
To explain, we are third generation lawn bowlers who were
taught how to play and how to act on the green by our Dad
and Grandfather, and we might add, everyone else at the club
including one elderly Scot who always had the remains of the
bar on his breath as he staggered on to the green for a game. Yet
he played a very competitive gentlemanly game and showed us
as 12 year olds, as much respect as he did the club champions.
He was a class act.
When we began this game, new bowlers were brought along
not in some sort of school-like atmosphere, but in a respect for
the game and the players who’ve earned their right to play skip
and vice. You played lead or second on a four man team and
you learned to build a head. You played second for probably a
couple years or more and were really encouraged to learn how
the game is played. Even the talented new bowlers had to pay
their dues and play second. Then when you were ready you
were promoted to lead. The object was to draw and build a
By Bob and Dick, the Sayer Brothers,
third generation bowlers from the Northeast Division
head, not make shots, but watch and learn as the vice and skip
decided what shots to play. You didn’t start vice-skipping until
you showed the knowledge and understanding of building and
running the head.
Perhaps the most important thing we were taught was that
losing is part of the game as much as winning. Playing to win at
all times, but accepting a loss like a man when it happens. This
means having respect for the game and even more importantly,
your opponent. It means to try hard in every game, even when
we no longer have a chance of winning the tournament.
In recent years we’ve seen many new and extremely talented
bowlers come into the game. We’re amazed at how good they are
in such a short time, but some of these newer bowlers we’re afraid
have missed something in their tutorials that would make them
not only more talented, but better competitors all around.
Here are some examples: 1. We have seen bowlers listening to
their IPods during games - this is disrespectful to your opponent.
2. A bowler who shakes your hand and says they just didn’t play
well shows disrespect. (We’ve caught ourselves on this one and
have tried to fix this in our behavior.) Often times the reason we
don’t play well, is that our opponents take our confidence away
by out bowling us. Congratulate them on that!
3. Goading an opponent is unacceptable.
4. Leaving the green to talk with others and have a beer,
especially to the point of having to be reminded when it is your
turn to play shows a complete disrespect. Don’t get us wrong,
we’ve played many players who enjoy drinking beer during the
game, but they stay on the rink and keep involved in the game.
We have no problem with that, in fact we envy them that they
can do that! We save our beer for afterwards as a reward or to
drown our sorrows!
5. We’ve even watched players cheat. What good is a win if
it is obtained dishonestly? Do they feel good about their game
if they cheat?
We wish everyone could have learned this game from our
dad and grandfather and even that little old Scot with beer on his
breath, but that isn’t possible so it is up to us in this day and age
to lead from the examples left to us by our elders. Though we’re
often still called the Sayer ‘boys’ on the green, we’re becoming
the old guard having been around for 30 and 40 years now.
Now for the important stuff — the brew part of our article
title. We don’t object to beer, those that know us know how
fond we are of it. So at the end of each article we are going to
recommend one beer we have enjoyed. This issue’s suggestion:
Red Ass Ale from Colorado. We first discovered this in Santa
Barbara in 1996 and tried it simply because of the funny name.
We enjoyed it and had several that week (Duncan Farrell would
say ‘several’ is an understatement.). It is particularly special to
us because that year we won the championship.
Jack Behling’s Family Bicycle Ride led to USLBA Hall of Fame
By Jim Copeland and Trevor Colby
Jack Behling, “Bowler of the Decade” for the 1990’s, was
the only player elected to the USLBA Hall of Fame at the 2007
National Open Tournament.
It was on a family bicycle ride in 1979 that took them
through Dineen Park in Milwaukee WI where they discovered
lawn bowling. In 1980
they watched the game
many times and were
invited to try it. Jack
and his wife Donna were
at once taken by the
skill needed to be good
at a game they both
could enjoy together,
to the extent that that
they both played in the
National Open held later
that year in Milwaukee.
Since then Jack has only
missed playing in one
National Open and that
was in 1981.
Arguably the best American bowler of his generation, Jack
was honored for his superb record of competitive success and
service to the sport of lawn bowls. At the U.S. Championships
he won the Pairs in 1995 and the Singles in 2006. At the USLBA
National Open, Jack has succeeded in every discipline; winning
the Fours in 2006, the Triples in 1998, and the Pairs in 1991
and 1992, and finishing second in the 2003 singles to a player
from England. He also did well in Division Opens, winning
the Central and South Central Opens as well as his favorite SW
Open, where he was “Bowler of the Tournament” three times
and won the Singles twice.
Jack was a member of team USA for fifteen years. He competed
in the Asia Pacific games in New Zealand and Malaysia
and at World Bowls in the UK, Australia and Scotland. His
magnificent shot at Worthing England in 1992 was the talk of
the tournament. Eight shots down with only one bowl left in an
end against Israel, USA’s skip drew right to the jack for a swing of
nine shots! Jack also played in four North American Challenges
against Canada, including one at Pinehurst where the USA
won. Recently he represented the USA at the Champion of
Champions tournament in Australia where the national singles
champions of the major bowls nations competed.
Many stars would argue that Jack Behling is a consummate
bowler and Joe Siegman, often manager of Team USA and a
U.S. champion once exclaimed, “That big guy doesn’t know how
good he could be!” John Stewart, a several time U.S. Champion
and Hall of Fame bowler asserts that “Nobody can draw the
shot as well as Jack Behling.”
For those readers who are interested in knowing what type
Bowls USA Summer 2008
of bowls a champion preferred, Jack Behling used Henselite size
6 Standard Bias to achieve his successes during the period that
he was “Bowler of the Decade.”
Jack is above all other things a sportsman, extremely competitive
to be sure, but rigorously fair on the green. Jack always
compliments good bowls. You will never hear him whine about
a wick or lucky shot which he believes are part of the game;
nor does he criticize players who are successful even when they
have a less than perfect delivery. “Lawn bowling is based on
hand and eye coordination” states Behling, “Each person has
his or her own style.”
On one issue Jack is firm: — The skip directs the team. In
some quarters this concept is out of favor but most books on
lawn bowling teach that the key to successful team play is that
the skip is in charge.
Jack is always willing to help other players whether novice
or veteran. He is keenly interested in all aspects of bowls and
has served as Central Division Councilor and Milwaukee Lake
Park LBC greenskeeper.
At the ceremony in Sun City Arizona where Jack was presented
with his Hall of Fame Plaque, he thanked his partners
“Past, present and deceased” and also his wife Donna for her
years of love and support. Privately he was pleased that he could
share this great honor with his grandchildren.
In his working life he was a Firefighter in the City of
Milwaukee for 34 years and rose through the ranks to Lieutenant,
Captain, and was Battalion Chief when he retired in 1998.
Jack has lived in Sun City AZ since he retired and shares his
recreational time between lawn bowling and golf. You can be
assured that when he does choose to bowl, this great American
champion and Hall of Famer will bring his great skills and fierce
competitive spirit to the green.
Team USA Wins Gold at China Open
Composed by the editor from material supplied by Chris Booth and Richard Broad
2008 CHINA OPEN CHAMPIONS Bob Schneider, Richard Broad, Chris Booth & Bill Brault
After a 24 year dry spell, Team USA comprising Bob
Schneider (Milwaukee), Chris Booth (San Diego), Richard
Broad (Seattle) and Bill Brault (San Diego) won a Gold Medal
in an international competition. This time it was at the 2008
China Open held March 4-7 at Bijiashan Park in Shenzhen,
China. Shenzhen is a new city about 29 years old and already
its population is over 8 million and is full of traffic and the
bustle of people that seems to typify the growth that is currently
happening in China.
The format of the tournament was as follows: 28 men’s
teams were formed into 4 groups by a random draw and the
teams in each group competed in a round robin. One special
round was added to allow teams with the same team number
in Group A/B and Group C/D to compete against one another.
Upon completion of the round robin stage, all teams in a group
were ranked and the top two teams of each group qualified for
the knock-out stage that determined the champions.
18 Bowls USA Summer 2008

The competition was fierce with the 28 teams coming
from: - Australia (2), Canada (2), China, Cyprus, England,
Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Scotland (2), Singapore
(2), Spain, South Africa, Thailand, USA, Wales and Zimbabwe.
In addition there were teams from Hong Kong and others from
cities on mainland China.
After defeating England in their first game, Team USA
went on to win the rest of their games, except for a tie against
Canada and a loss to Thailand. With a record of 5-1-1, USA
advanced to the quarterfinals full of hope.
There was a sense that the team gained momentum and
confidence as they progressed through the tournament, winning
close fought, yet convincing victories in the quarter and
semifinal games. After winning the semi-final against Happy
Valley from Hong Kong, Australia A was the only team standing
in their way of victory and it must be said that Australia
was the favorite going into the final.
Team USA was not to be deterred, each playing key shots
or “monster bowls” as Bill Brault said, when they were really
needed. It was a lesson in teamwork that neither they nor the
spectators will forget. Team USA pulled away at the end of
the game, winning 15-10 to take home the gold medal. It was
a great win for Team USA and one of which all our country’s
lawn bowlers can be proud
Bowls USA Summer 2008
Four days of bowling started the grueling schedule of three
tournaments. The first tournament was the Hong Kong
International Mixed Fours held Feb 28-29 at the fabulous
downtown facility of the Hong Kong Football Club. This
club is located in the heart of downtown Hong Kong and has
top-notch facilities, with restaurants, bars, indoor and outdoor
greens, gift shops, workout rooms, huge meeting rooms, soccer
stadiums, reading rooms, business centers and libraries.
This was an international event with overseas and local
players making 32 teams consisting of three men and one
woman. All teams were formed by random draw and given
unique names of flowers. The challenging format called for
alternating games to be played at the outdoor facility and
inside on the newly renovated indoor green. After seven first
round games, quarterfinals and semifinals, the “Thistle” team
of Phil Downs (England), Neil Rees (Wales), Chris Booth
(San Diego) and Grace Chu (Hong Kong) won the final game
11-1 to win the gold.
March 1-2 saw Team USA playing together in the Tiger
Bowls International in Hong Kong with 77 men’s teams and
28 women’s teams competing in a punishing format of skins
games. Team USA failed to qualify for the finals, but its win
in the China Open over the next four days more than compensated
for it.
A group of 30 mentally handicapped persons accompanied
by their supervisors visited our club in April. Apart from providing
drinks and snacks, our members taught our visitors the
basic skills of lawn bowling and let them roll four to six ends
with preset jacks and mats. They all enjoyed the game and left
our club with smiling faces and beaming eyes.
Our Open house on May 10 attracted a total of 90 individuals
from neighboring cities. After viewing the DVD on lawn
bowling, receiving basic skills instruction and having a few trial
ends, thirty-three applied for immediate membership and paid
their dues on the spot. Flags, banners and signs hung or posted
in conspicuous spaces; flyers made available in the City Hall
and various organizations and centers, press releases in seven
Chinese newspapers, radio interviews and well distributed duties
among members all contributed to the great success of the
event. Brightly colored Hawaiian shirts worn by all members on
that day added a touch of gaiety and joy to the atmosphere.
In May we were extra busy hosting two major recruiting
events during which we signed up 25 new members. This is
the largest number of new members recruited in our club’s
history within such a short time period. To analyze our success
we could mention five contributing factors: 1) Volunteers. 2)
Co-sponsors: The LA City’s Parks Department and the West
LA Chamber of Commerce. 3) Special dues: lowering our
membership dues by 50% for this brief period proved to be a
critical incentive. 4) PayPal connection: this system enabled
us to receive dues on the spot by credit card. 5) Our ‘Closer’:
rather than leaving it to our guests to decide about membership,
our new system provided an instant last push to close the deal
and collect the dues on the spot.
There are three other follow up steps without which our
recruiting efforts would be wasted: 1) Our Mentor program
that should concentrate on bringing the new members onto our
greens and then later facilitate their integration into our club
life. 2) Instruction program that should teach just enough
bowling to the newcomers to pass the test while allowing them
to have fun during the lessons. 3) Retention program that
should keep in touch with the new bowlers so that they are
motivated to remain active.
In April we visited Newport Harbor and our hopeful members
were determined to improve on last year’s result when all
our teams lost. We were elated at the end of the day when the
score showed Newport 3 - Holmby Park 3.
The Naylon Pairs started with 16 participants in May
under unseasonably cold conditions and was won by Damian
Anderson & Peter Barna.
By Georgie Deno
New officers for 2008: President Georgie Deno, 1st VP
Melanie Vizenor, 2nd VP Robert McMahon, Treasurer Vicki
Brown and Secretary Sue Sallee.
We held our “Saturday at the Greens” open house event
in May. We planned a format that took guests through a sixrink
course of short, medium, and long targets to get a taste of
lawn bowling. Following that, people were invited to “Beat the
Champ” where a score of five points against either Chris Booth
or Bill Brault (members of Team USA who won the China Open)
would net the winner a club shirt. Promising new members were
invited to enjoy free pizza and fill out a membership application.
Paying club dues has been made easier by putting a link to
PayPal on our webpage. This was especially useful at our open
house because we could get people to apply for membership
and pay dues on the spot.
Our singles challenge tournament has been a huge success
with 26 members competing over a six-month period.
SOUTHWEST DIVISION & CLUB NEWS
Laguna Beach
By Linda Jahraus
Laguna’s beautiful setting may have been the initial draw for
the recent Open House but it will be the sport that keeps them
coming back. Under the direction of Jan Hargraves the Open
House with food and fun was a day for the record books. On the
day of the event 29 people joined the Club and in the two weeks
that followed 20 more joined our ranks. Our new friends include
many Laguna locals and Laguna Beach High School students.
Plans for the new members include group and private lessons,
pairing with a veteran member for encouragement and ongoing
social events. Our first group lesson was a tremendous success.
Wednesdays continue to be WILD with Jerry Stewart directing
and arranging games for about 20. It must be the fact that
the weekly winners get their names in the headlines that keeps
them coming back. The day consists of 2 ten-end games with a
tea break. I say let’s stay for lunch and really make it a day.
Kudos are in order for our President Frank Andersen for
keeping an eye on the contractors to improve and maintain
our greens. Frank was seen the other day picking up some 200
lbs of fertilizer in Newport Beach and lugging it himself from
the street and across the greens to the storage shed. Now that
is dedication! Our greens are running great. All you traveling
bowlers….stop by and join us for a game.
Thanks also to Reinie Kramer for organizing the purchase
of the new high-pressure water sprayer to keep our benches
presentable to our guests. Naturally, thanks are also in order
for the many contributors who made the purchase possible in
the first place! We do have a bit of a seagull problem!
Cheers for all our tournament bowlers who are out on the
greens. Their names are showing up all over the place. We are
proud of your dedication to the sport.
We mourn the loss of members Tony Carras and Bob
Henderson.
As summer nears we all await the start of Twilight Bowling.
Nothing is better than dinner and bowls by the sea. The City
of Laguna Beach has renovated Heisler Park that surrounds us.
It is truly a sight to behold.
Many thanks to the club members that helped to make the
Murray/Allison Singles tournament (32 entries) a great success.
Results: Murray Flight: 1-Mert Isaacman (Beverly Hills). 2-
Tony Baer (Newport Beach).3-Roger Teske. 4-Liam Courtney
(Newport Beach). 3-Bill Brault. 4-Bill Kagan (San Diego)
Laguna Woods
By Eileen Donohue
Our Open House on May 10 was very successful because
we had 72 guests and 15 of them signed up for lessons right
away. Brent Rickard (Training Chairman) reports that nine
people are in class right now, which added to the 13 already
brought into the Club this year gives us a net gain of 22 new
members as of June 1.
Our Club participated in the fifth Annual Senior Games
held in Laguna Woods Village. Gold medal: Wayne Bowbeer &
Eileen Donohue. Silver medal: Gary Fischer & Marjorie Siddall.
There was a tie for the Bronze between Frank Searle & Lillian
Hargrove with Laurel Verning and Bob Whalen.
Jean MacAuley finals:
A green: 1-Michael Siddall, Jan Hargraves & Gerry Grady.
2-Ian ho, Ivan Hyland & Ann Nunes. 3-Gary Fischer, Jim
2-Cliff Hillard, Steve Dowd & Carole Hillard. 3-John Ruelas,
Long Beach
By Bernie Crabtree
We hosted Holmby Park with their 21 bowlers and we won
the first game by 4-3. The second game was a friendly mixed
draw between the two clubs.
Our Fun Day was held with 30 bowlers participating
from Laguna Beach, Newport Harbor, Santa Ana, Laguna
Woods and Long Beach. In April, the George Sweet Dum Luck
Tournament honored 96 year old George Sweet, who still rolls
a few bowls.
The 14th Annual Long Beach Carnival consisted of 61
bowlers from Hemet, Riverside, Pasadena, San Diego, Newport,
Laguna Beach, Santa Ana, Hermosa Beach and Long Beach.
Scores were kept individually and the first place winner was
Marti Worley from Riverside who played the lead position.
A new event in Long Beach is the 2008 Singles Challenge
Ladder Tournament with 19 members signed up. Member Ben
French contributed $100 towards the prize money. Open House
on May 10 was a great success. We signed up 24 new members
and publicity in the newspapers, banners & flyers were a big
plus in getting 70 people to visit us.
Newport Harbor
By Ray Norris
We won the Southwest Division’s Winter League Fours
Trophy by defeating Beverly Hills in the finals of the League
playoffs. Our finals team was comprised of four novice bowlers:
Charlie Herbert, Dave Stennes, Brian Stewart & Joe Regan.
For the eighth year in a row, we hosted Holmby Park and the
result was a 3-3 tie.
In preparation for the SWD Open House event 38 club
members spent a day sprucing up the club facility. We completed
the painting of the interior of the club house, trimming
hedges, cleaning benches and re-upholstering our club furniture.
This paid dividends because we hosted 110 visitors and netted
40 new members.
Our May 10 Open House which was held at almost all the
clubs in the Southwest Division, turned out to be quite a success.
At our club we had about 75 visitors to try out bowling, eat a
little lunch and enjoy the day. Most of our club members turned
out to help and it was quite a festive day. We bought new royal
blue shirts with our club name on them for the occasion and
everyone looked very nice in their blue and white outfits.
We managed to gain 10 new members on the day and two
more that came back within a week to join. We also signed up
several people who are now taking classes.
for the first time. As a result several people will be receiving
instruction
Answers from the Rules Guy
Answers to this issue’s questions from page 8
1. Page 29 Law 24.2 radio button 1. No. For a bowl to be a
toucher it must touch the jack before the next succeeding
bowl is delivered.
2. Page 31 Law 27. 3. The skips must agree a bowl is dead
before it can be removed. Page 32 Law 28.1.4 radio button
the opposing skip shall restore the bowl as near as possible
to its original position. Page 30 Law 27.1 radio button
4. This rule must be used so that after the bowl has been
replaced by the skip, you can now check as to whether it is
in or out of bounds.
3. Page 31 Law 28.1 radio button 1. The opposing skip should
declare the bowl dead.
4. Page 31 Law 28.1 radio button 3. The skip of the team
which played the bowl has three options: a. Have the
bowl replayed. b. Place the bowl where the skip believes it
would have come to rest. c. Leave the bowl where it came
to rest.
5. Page 38 Law 34.2.3. The position of players within a
team should not be changed after the first end has been
6. Page 38 Law 34.2.4. If the players in a team game change
positions when no substitute is necessary, the team will be
ancient game. All who attended were measured for bowls, given
a practice set, and sent to the green to work with an instructor.
Basic techniques, rules, and principles were shared followed by
a four end practice game. The day ended with wine, food and
camaraderie. Due to the success of this
event we plan to hold it annually.
At the age of 93, Genevieve Cichy
still bowls at least once each week. This
elegant lady and bowls expert won the
U.S. Open Women’s Pairs in 1990 and
1991. We believe she is the only two time
champion of her age still actively setting a
jack and sharing her bowls wisdom
Palo Alto
By Ian Harris
This year we celebrate our 75th anniversary and the club is
thriving. We held a fundraiser in May for a gift from the club to
the residents of Palo Alto and in June we held an Open House
with invitations to local dignitaries.
Later in the year we are planning a barbecue at which one
of our newer members and his Bluegrass band will provide the
entertainment and we hope it will attract potential members to
our club. We will continue to have a weekly Pizza night, chicken
dinners and other social events.
On the green we have had four well attended tournaments
and some have produced unexpected winners, which has made
for exciting finishes and good conversation afterwards. Our newer
members have played a significant part in these tournaments and
in club activities in general. They have discovered the fascinations
of the game and the great atmosphere in the clubhouse.
Our club coach John Hickson, presented an interesting
strategy session before the draw games one Saturday. He laid out
a few different heads for discussion and the enthusiastic response
has encouraged him to plan more such sessions this year. Not
only do we need to introduce our new members to the game,
Bowls USA Summer 2008
but we would like our more seasoned players to gain a better
understanding of tactics and strategy.
Our recruiting continues on all fronts. We have already
had one class arranged through the City Parks and Rec. Dept.
Our Sunday casual games seem to attract interested spectators
and we are talking about initiating a raffle prize, open to any
member who brings in a friend to join the club. An unscientific
poll revealed that there is no one particular recruiting method
that works better than others. You have to try everything with
as much publicity as possible, and you have to provide an atmosphere
that encourages new members to join in the games and
social events to keep them coming back. Demographics should
begin to work in our favor with more Baby Boomers reaching
the ideal age to start bowling.
Richmond
By Frank Ransome
All is well at Richmond. The restored Clubhouse is getting
more use and there are usually people bowling on the fairly flat
greens every afternoon. Club Instructor Kenny Anderson has
several students in morning classes and Club President Frank
Ransome has a great time watching other people do the work.
Rossmoor
By Tay Wheeler
We hosted the PIMD 2008 Opening Day event when 126
avid bowlers filled our three greens. Our president, Bob Harbeson,
took this opportunity to inform visitors that Rossmoor would be
playing a major role in the upcoming 2008 National Open event
and would require strict adherence to our club’s all-white dress
code, with the exception of team-colored shirts. He also stressed
the importance of wearing smooth flat-soled shoes.
Tournament Director Ed Guterres
claimed the title in the Club’s Men’s
Handicap Singles event, beating the ten
other contestants brave enough to enter.
In the Women’s Handicap Singles, Jackie
Purdy, after suffering a first-round loss,
came back strongly with three straight
wins and qualified for the semi-finals.
She went on to win both her semi-final
Ed Guterres
and final games by one point in tight
finishes.
Ed and Pauline de Assis hosted the
club’s second popular Chicken Bowl
where afternoon bowling is followed
by Costco chicken served with all the
trimmings in the mat house. Guests of
honor were the six new bowling recruitsin-training
coached by Jeanne Lauritzen
and Ed de Assis.
PACIFIC INTER-MOUNTAIN DIVISION & CLUB NEWS
San Francisco
By George Scarpato
Our season began with a well-attended St. Patrick’s Day
luncheon followed by a green full of triples teams. In April
the three greens were cored, sanded and seeded. The first
Tournament results: Women’s Handicap Pairs: D.J. Doring
& Linda Jennings. Men’s Handicap Triples: Oscar Collaco,
George Scarpato & Bob Remedios. Hattie Bahrt Mixed Pairs:
Oscar Collaco & Mary Leigh. Hattie generously hosted a
lunch for all bowlers and guests and awarded prizes to winners
of the 2007 tournament. Men’s Triples: Kevin McCaffrey,
Robb Pawlak & George Scarpato. Men’s Pairs: Arnie Barros
& Bill Lee.
Instruction is being conducted every Wednesday and
most weekends. In addition a team-building class was held for
Washington Mutual employees and a dozen Odd Fellows came out
for their first lesson. The production company for Medtronics, a
large medical instrument maker, shot a special video simulating
a bowls match on our greens in May. Four actors were coached
in the rudiments of the game by our members and the video
will premiere at a national medical convention.
San Jose
By Lou Audino
While other clubs are struggling to get their basic needs
like lawn care taken care of, San Jose City has ponied up the
money to replace the old clubhouse with a brand new one.
The new 20’ x 40’ building will fulfill all our needs.
This culminates a six year drive where all backboards
and plinth were replaced and new cement was laid around
the green. It is wonderful when a City realizes the value of
recreation for people who are mostly senior citizens and is
willing to pay for it.
Lou Audino, Fred Gardner, Mayou Bernard & Clinton
Reeder won the Club Rinks Championship.
Innovation is the watchword on the green this year. In
addition to the popular “Short Jack Mondays” where the
jack and mat are placed at the minimum distance apart, we
have instituted an open singles game where players challenge
each other to singles matches. Games are played outside normal
club game hours, and the overall winner determined in
November by total wins gets $100.
Santa Clara
By Noreen Silva
We began the year with a Mixed Pairs tournament that was
won by Kathy Allen & Frank Cieplinski and we celebrated St.
Patrick’s Day with a Mixed Triples that Frank Cieplinski, Claud
Keith & Noreen Silva won.
We are anxious to see if money for our new clubhouse will
be allocated when the city budget is presented because we have
been in a temporary building for five years.
Santa Cruz
By Christine Palochak
We recently celebrated the first anniversary of our beautiful
artificial green that has created a lot of community interest and
brought bowlers from throughout the state. Our membership has
grown over 300% since the installation of the new green. In addition,
over the past year we have hosted international visitors from
near and far including Australia, Vancouver and the British Isles.
The first Saturday of every month, we meet before our games to
keep the green, clubhouse and grounds in tip top shape. In April,
we celebrated the Ninety-Fifth birthday of member Renee Sayer,
who plays regularly on our green. Congratulations, Renee!
Mothers’ Day was celebrated with Fathers preparing a delightful
champagne brunch for Mothers. The ladies hope this
will become an annual tradition!
In May we were treated to a workshop by Joe Shepard followed
by afternoon games. The summer months will feature
several additional activities in addition to our regular Tuesday,
Thursday, Saturday and Sunday games. Friday night games and
monthly Friday night dinners in the clubhouse are being held
in May through October.
June, July & August feature women’s league Monday potluck
luncheon games. We hosted the culmination of the area John
Brown games on June 18 and the day ended with a luau and a
ukulele band performance.
Sunnyvale
By Al Mendoza
The John Brown Friendship Games started at Santa Clara
in May and this popular series of friendly competitions has been
going on for over 15 years. The clubs hosting successive games are
Sunnyvale, San Jose, Del Mesa Carmel, Palo Alto & Santa Cruz.
The largest turnout was at the final venue of Santa Cruz where we
enjoyed their fast artificial green and generous hospitality.
Al and Dorie Mendoza visited friends and relatives in the
Philippines in February. They also bowled at three lawn bowling
venues: Nomads Club in Manila, Angeles Club in Angeles
City and Coconut Grove in Bauang, La Union - home club of
the two players who won the Women’s Pairs at the 2007 US
Open. The turnout for the John Brown Friendship Game at
Sunnyvale was totally unexpected with 48 bowlers playing fours
on six rinks. Great turnout and weather with a plus: everyone
enjoyed the bowling.
SunRiver
By R. Wayne Pace
On Saturday, Feb. 23 Lana Esplin directed the Mixed
Triples Tournament with twelve entries. The rules provided
for the completion of two games of six ends each for a total of
12 ends. Teams rotated after the first six ends and played a different
team. The winners were Sherry Marcovich, Bob Colson
and Tim Marcovich.
By Larry Grayson
Our green was closed for a period in the summer for a
renovation and leveling project. An agreement was reached
to allow our summer bowlers to use the Sun City West green
during the renovation. The green should be playable prior to
the snowbirds returning in the fall.
Paradise Resort
By Marilyn Appollo
Our greens have improved after a planer was purchased to
smooth out the surface. The clubhouse will get a sprucing up
with improvements to be completed in time for fall bowling.
Club tournaments continued into February and March.
Men’s Singles: Chris Krogh. Men’s Novice: Jerry Schoenwether.
Women’s Singles: Shirley Toneff. Women’s Novice: Sandi
Swayze. Pairs: Bob Milson & Mary Gunther. Triples: Bernard
Lavalliere, Elaine Hansen & John Taylor. The Old Timers vs.
the Rookies tournament was played with a four-end format with
players moving every fourth end. Old Timers won 4 games and
tied one. A return visitation was enjoyed with Sun City Grand
with an afternoon of bowling two six end games with a break
for social time and refreshments.
We finished our fun days with a hamburger bash held
outside the clubhouse instead of our indoor annual pizza party.
All agreed it was a success and should be repeated. The end of
the season was celebrated with a banquet at the local Elks Club.
Clearwater took back the trophy this year by winning 20 out
all and the result was a tie.
For the second year, our club held a charity tournament
On a cold day we held the annual Mayor’s Charity so the
home-made soup was much appreciated. This year we collected
Bowls USA Summer 2008
$500 for a local charity chosen by Mayor Frank Hibbard. A
tournament sponsored by Betty Adamson was held in memory
of her late husband Bill who was the winner of many championships
in the USA, Canada and his native Scotland. This year
over the course of eight weeks we ran a very successful Australian
Pairs League.
We welcomed old friends and made new ones when we
hosted Mount Dora for our annual match which resulted in
a win for Clearwater. After the games we enjoyed a delicious
meal prepared by Joyce Lannan and Cecilia Noble. Ken Roberts
donated the wine. Lasagna & Pizza Nights with Bingo are very
popular.
Marion Wall passed away June 14 due to fatal injuries sustained
when she suffered a fall in her home in Stouffville Ontario.
She is survived by her husband Rick and daughter Brenda. Marion
was a top class bowler who won many championships in the
southeast division in addition to those she won in Canada.
To round off the winter season the Women challenged the
Men to a bowls match so pride and honor was at stake. It was
decided that this event was so important that David & Christine
Burbery donated a new Challenge trophy to the club. It was also
agreed that this match will be an annual event and this year’s
winners were the Men. After the match we enjoyed food and
drink in the clubhouse.
lawn bowling. She has been responsible
for teaching a great number of
members and many of her pupils have
become accomplished bowlers. For
several years she has held classes every
month throughout the winter and this
