Tearney puts health woes aside
• By Gordon Findlater
FINN TEARNEY is set to
make his on-court debut at the
Davis Cup when New Zealand
meet Pakistan at Wilding Park
tomorrow.
Tearney, New Zealand’s top
ranked singles player, will be
happy just to get on the court
after an experience to forget
during the team’s last tie in
Korea. He fell ill and was unable
to play due to tonsillitis.
“That was pretty average, I
ended up having my tonsils
out after that. I love being in
the Davis Cup environment
with the guys and I’m looking
forward to playing in front of a
home crowd,” said Tearney.
New Zealand play Pakistan
in a group one Asia/Oceania
relegation match.
The match will be crucial as
the loser of the tie will be relegated
to group two.
Twelve months ago New
Zealand were just one win away
from advancing to the world
group play-offs.
However, with New Zealand
winning just one of the four singles
ties, it has become evident
the team are in need of a standout
player in singles to make it
to the next level.
It is hoped Tearney could
be that player. In 2014 he was
ranked outside the top 1500 in
the world and in the space of just
two years has risen to 362.
The tie starts at 11am with the
first singles matches.
SECOND TIME LUCKY: Finn
Tearney is looking forward to
getting on court after getting
tonsillitis during the team’s
last Davis Cup tie against
Korea, in Seoul.
