Gymnasts jump on club
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
A WAINONI gymnastics club
may have only opened in May,
but has already had a 500 per
cent increase in membership.
Te Wero Gymnastics has had
people from across the city wanting
to join, with membership
jumping from 16 to 90 since it
opened.
The club is now aiming to
reach 180 members before the
end of the year.
General manager Tamika
McCallum is the only full-time
employee, and works alongside
two part-time senior coaches
with international experience,
and three junior coaches.
She said they are not out to
poach other gyms’ members, but
a lot of their new recruits have
come from other clubs around
the city.
“We’ve had great feedback
from members who have come
from other clubs around town.
They just come in and they
love our facilities and our
coaches,
so they stay,” Ms McCallum said.
“We’ve even had some that
have come in mid-way through
a term after paying term fees for
another club, so we don’t charge
them, we just let them join in for
that term,” she said.
The club is now aiming to grow
their membership to 180 by the
end of the school year.
“We just missed out on reaching
99 members by the start of
term three, so we’re hopeful we
can double our membership by
the end of the year,” Ms McCallum
said.
The club is a secondary branch
of the Olympia Gymnastics
POTENTIALLY life
threatening situations at the
Wainoni Avonside Community
Services Trust have been
helped out by a random act of
kindness.
During a recent Thursday
lunchtime, trust co-ordinator
Betty Chapman mentioned that
it had been in need of a defibrillator
ever since the Wainoni
Medical Centre relocated away
from the area four years ago.
Member Barbara Hayles then
offered to buy a defibrillator
for the trust, worth more than
$3000.
She also paid for a defibrillator
tutorial, to teach the coordinators
and volunteers at the
KIND ACT:
she donated to
Betty Chapman.
Act of kindness
could save lives
trust how to use it.
Mrs Chapman said the trust
is “extremely indebted” to Mrs
Hayles for her random act of
kindness.
“We were just talking about
needing more first-aid at the
trust, and doctors had come to
say that we should really have
[a defibrillator],” Mrs Chapman
said.
“It was discussed and the next
Thursday she said I want to buy
you that. I said you’re kidding
me, but she said no,” Mrs Chapman
said.
The alternative without the
defibrillator would have been a
“10 minute drive to Pak ‘n’ Save
and back”, which could be a
vital amount of time if someone
is having a medical emergency.
