WE ARE FAMILY: From left, Daisy, Luna and Sarge. All three were brought to Pet Pals when their family
decided to emigrate and could not find homes for them
A furry family in
need of a home
MADELEINE CHAPUT
AN UNUSUAL trio has created a special bond
which proves that family is as real in the animal
world as it is in the human sphere.
Daisy, Luna and Sarge arrived at Pet Pals in
East London over six months ago, when their
family decided to emigrate and was unable to
find suitable homes for them.
The golden Yorkie/terrier- cross, mixed breed
hound and tabby cat have been living at Pet Pals
ever since, enjoying all that the local animal
sanctuary has to offer their little family.
“Soon after the three arrived, someone fell in
love with Daisy, offering a new home and family
for her, and to be honest I was worried about the
separation anxiety,” said East London Pet Pals
founder Sue Kriel.
“Daisy managed to escape the first night at
her new home. We still don’t know how she did
it, because that home was like Fort Knox.”
Daisy was found roaming the streets two days
later and returned to her adoptive family, but
soon taken back to Pet Pals. “She went
absolutely mad when she saw her big sister,
Luna.”
Daisy and Luna are inseparable, spending all
their time together at the sanctuary while their
feline brother, Sarge, is less bothered by family
ties unless food is involved. Both dogs allow
Sarge to eat out of their bowls on a daily basis
and live with more than six other cats in their
turquoise house at the sanctuary.
“Luna is a gentle giant. She is a big softy and
is not aggressive or over-protective when it
Warm bond
between trio
comes to Daisy. Luna just loves her to bits,” said
Kriel. “Daisy is only three years old and has lots
of energy. She has the sweetest nature. They’re
both lovely animals.”
Daisy’s escape artist skills make breaking out
of the Pet Pals enclosure look like child’s play,
but she has never tried.
“They’re both happy here and I don’t have the
heart to separate them. Luna suffered in the
short time Daisy was gone and Daisy wanted to
be back here. I hope to find them a home
together soon.”
sisters a loving home or assist Pet Pals, contact
FORMER African Angels
Independent School Grade 7
pupil Indiphile Velebayi made
the two-hour journey to
Grahamstown this week, where
she will be attending Grade 8 at
the Diocesan School for Girls
(DSG) on a full boarding
bursar y.
Indiphile, 13, was one of
African Angels' top students,
receiving the top marks for
mathematics over the past
three years.
“Mathematics is my
favourite subject, because I
like numbers and I can
understand them easily. I do
not really like history, because
of all the dates you have to
remember, but it's not hard,” a
confident Indiphile said.
Along with meeting various
academic requirements,
Indiphile was also required to
take part in a team-building
day at DSG as part of the
school's sponsorship
programme.
“Indie did very well in the
screening tests for the Schools
Scholarship Programme, but
she is also an excellent team
member and natural leader,”
African Angels founder Lou
Billet said.
Situated in Chintsa, African
Angels Independent School
was first opened in 2012 and
caters for children from
disadvantaged backgrounds
living in the area.
The school started out with
two classes, Grade R and a
combined Grade 1 and 2 class,
but continuously grew to
accommodate pupils up to
Grade 7.
In her final year at the
school, Indiphile once again
impressed the teachers as she
was the top Grade 7 academic
achiever for 2017.
“She is a very resilient
young woman with great
academic potential,” a proud
Billet said.
Yesterday Indiphile, who
would like to become a
surgeon one day, officially
started high school at DSG
and is looking forward to what
her new school has to offer.
“I am excited but a bit
nervous. I am mostly excited
though. I’m looking forward to
experiencing new things,
meeting new people and
getting the best education,”
Indiphile said.
READY TO RIDE: Chairman of Buffalo City Riders Antonio Prince, left, with his team
Buffalo City Riders are
helping to change lives
By Zolile Zamisa
THE Buffalo City Riders (BCR)
of East London are more than
just a group of motorcycle
enthusiasts – they are a group
of men passionate about
making a difference by
donating to the poor.
The Riders is a
charity-based organisation
which exhibits its range of
motorbikes and scooters at
outdoor events. Members are
hard at work on various
projects to help change the
lives of the poor.
The club was invited to the
ANC 106 celebrations at the
weekend with the donation
from the event to be used to
fund their current project of
collecting Easter eggs set to
be donated to orphanages in
the city. “Last year we
collected 22000 eggs and this
year we are planning to break
that record,” club chairman
Antonio Prince said.
BCR was established at the
end of 2015 by the then
president, Aston Wertheim,
and deputy Sanjay Bechoo.
The club boasts a
membership of 20 and is
hoping that more people will
join. Sanitary towels to help
schoolgirls in and around the
East London area are also
being collected.
“We do not charge anyone
request donations for what we
BCM needs to
‘clean up’ act
By Zolile Zamisa
THE filthy state of the Buffalo City
Metro has raised the ire of the DA.
In a statement this week, the
Buffalo City Metro (BCM) DA
caucus raised concerns over the
level of pollution and littering in the
cit y’s CBD and residential areas.
DA caucus man in BCM, Va u g h a n
Holmes said: “The unbearable litter
and filth in the Buffalo City Metro is
a legacy of ongoing ANC
mismanagement and looting.
“Duncan Village is overflowing
with garbage and over Christmas
the King William’s Town CBD looked
more like a combat zone than an
economic hub of the metro.”
Holmes said the filthy conditions
had led to a plague of rats in
Vincent and Duncan Village and
posed a serious risk to public
health.
“The DA calls on the ANC-led
municipality to urgently enforce the
existing bylaws properly by
supplying enough bins for public
access and to clamp down on
littering and illegal rubbish dumps,”
Homes said.
The GO team visited East
London’s Ebuhlanti taxi rank in the
cit y’s CDB this week and found an
illegal dumping site and a dirty rank
site which, according to taxi drivers,
is not cleaned by the municipality.
Taxi committee member Zalisile
Lipheyi said: “We struggle every day
with this dirty place. We can’t even
sit here and eat our food.”
The drivers said they had since
resorted to cleaning the site but
had reported their concerns to the
municipality. No response had yet
been received.
BCM had not responded to
queries at the time of going to print.
WELCOME GIFT: The King William’s Town SPCA is most grateful to Corry Viera, who made these toys
Urgent need for pet
adoptions, donations
THE King William’s Town
SPCA kennels and
cattery are full of
animals in desperate
need of adoption.
Annette Rademeyer
of the SPCA said this
week that the animal
welfare body would also
be facing various
challenges during the
y e a r.
These include the
urgent need to maintain
and renovate the
kennels and cattery,
which were looking
rather shabby.
The SPCA is also in
dire need of a vehicle
and an inspector needs
to be employed.
The latter is quite a
challenge as such a
person must be
qualified and adhere to
stringent requirements
for the position.
The SPCA would also
need, as it did every
year, for the community
to donate dog and cat
food, fodder for farm
animals, as well as
petrol and blankets for
the animals.
“The kennels need to
be painted and
d a m p - p r o ofe d , ”
Rademeyer said.
Although a pressing
need, the revamping of
the kennels and cattery
could unfortunately not
be done in 2017 due to
a lack of funds.
Volunteers over the
age of 16 wanting to
help out at the SCPA in
King would be
welcomed as would
companies or
businesses wanting to
help renovate the
CHAPUT
No end to couple’s
driveway nightmare
MADELEINE CHAPUT
MORNINGSIDE residents
Charmaine and Fredrick Vermaak
have been battling it out with the
Buffalo City Municipality (BCM)
over a driveway hitch since
August last year.
Faced with a flooded driveway
at their Tewksbury Road home,
caused by a leaking pipe, the
Vermaaks reached out to BCM
asking for something to be done.
“The pipe was leaking for a
good few weeks before I was
able to get them to come and
replace it. I phoned continuously
and eventually they did
something about it,” Charmaine
said.
After digging up the
Ve r m a a k s ’ driveway and
replacing the leaking pipe, BCM
promised to fix up and re-pave
the driveway within three to six
weeks, according to Charmaine.
“Again, I have been phoning
continuously and our driveway is
still one big mess. When it rains
it is even worse. It took a long
time to get the leak fixed, but
this is ridiculous, we have been
waiting since August last year. ”
The three to six week interval
Complaints go unheard
was to be used by BCM to check
that the pipe was secure and
ensure no more leaks could be
expected.
However, almost six months
have passed and the Vermaak's
driveway is still sporting an
uneven heap of sabunga in its
cent re.
“I have been phoning the
municipality for months. I even
tried phoning at five minute
intervals for an entire day, but
I’m either put on hold or cut off,”
Charmaine said.
“When I eventually got
through to someone at the
municipality I was told that they
were extremely busy and I
should just keep phoning and
eventually someone would deal
with my complaint.”
Producing a cloud of dust
every time it is used, the
Vermaak's uneven and sandy
driveway is the primary entrance
to their home and they fear it
might cause some bad falls.
“An 84-year-old lady from
church came to visit us a few
weeks ago. She knew about the
driveway and she even had her
walking stick, but she slipped
and if I had not been behind her
she would have been hurt
b a d l y, ” Charmaine said.
While complaining to BCM
would not be the Vermaak's
ideal option, Charmaine's
husband, Fredrick recently had a
heart attack and is unable to
pave the driveway himself.
“If I could, I would just do it
myself and get it out of the way.
We would not have to wait so
long,” Fredrick said.
“We are ratepayers. We do not
make the municipality wait for
their money so why should we
have to wait so long for a service
to which we have a right?”
Charmaine said.
The Go! contacted BCM l a st
week and this week with no
response received at the time of
going to press.
SIVENATHI GOSA
MDANTSANE-based Lulutho Grooming School is
trying to help young people reach for the stars.
The school was started in 2009 with 900 girls
accommodated at the arts centre.
Founder Yolanda Pietersen said the purpose was
to produce role models and to create opportunities
for young people to become involved in
community development projects.
Since its inception, the school has opened
branches in Mthatha, Kwelera and in Cape Town,
and caters for young people from the ages of nine
to 22.
Pietersen, who is an architect and a director of
Baseline Civil Contractors in Cape Town, said:
“God used me to create Lulutho in order to help
children from the rural and urban areas by
providing an aftercare facility. They are able to
explore their talents and art. Activities include
drama, dance, poetry, modelling, public speaking
and debating.
“We host a five-day empowerment workshop at
Byletts High School twice a year during the
holidays with 800 young people from all our
branches and the workshop is free.”
The initiative’s main funders are the National
Lottery Commission, Enroute Traders, Baseline
Civil Contractors and Byletts. For information, like
who is part of the South
African Youth Council in
The two started a youth
programme, the Back to
School Campaign, which
collects school uniforms
for pupils in need – from
shirts to tunics, jerseys,
socks and shoes.
Njadu said he and Sani
decided on the initiative
after a visit by officials
from the department of
sport, recreation, arts and
culture to Duncan Village
to donate essentials to
pupils who were from
“Unfortunately they did
not bring enough for
everyone and that is
They hope the initiative
will encourage pupils to
stay in school because
some dropped out as they
could not afford the
essentials, Njadu said.
The campaign has seen
local businesses and
community members
donating school clothing
and shoes.
“So far, we will be
donating to four schools
in Duncan Village:
Mzokhanyo High School,
Inyathi Primary School,
Ebenezer High School and
Nontuthuzelo Primary
“We are going to
expand in the near future
and donate to more
schools,” Njadu said.

Plans bloom for Kwelera
ADMINISTRATION and visitor
facilities are in the planning for
the Kwelera National Botanical
Garden on the Wild Coast.
The garden was the topic of
the monthly talk hosted by the
Friends of the East London
Museum and the Border
Historical Society on Tuesday,
presented by the curator,
Lee-Anne Kessler, at the MCL
Hall at the East London Museum.
The establishment of the
Kwelera National Botanical
Garden has brought to 10 the
number of South Africa’s
national botanical gardens
managed by the South African
National Biodiversity Institute
(Sanbi).
Kwelera, which was declared
on July 25, 2014, is an important
biodiversity corridor in the region
which comprises 160ha of
coastal dune forest, natural
vegetation, marine frontage and
coastal grasslands.
Sanbi is planning to develop
administration and visitor
facilities for the new garden on
an adjacent portion of land.
The Kwelera Nature Reserve,
which is managed by the Eastern
Cape Parks and Tourism Agency
(ECPTA) as a protected area, has
been identified as the anchor
site for the new garden.
In terms of a signed
memorandum of agreement the
reserve will remain under ECPTA
but will be co-managed with the
Sanbi as the natural portion of
the proposed Kwelera Garden.
Kwelera, derived from an old
Khoi word “goerecha”, meaning
“many aloes”, is the first national
botanical garden to be
established in the Eastern Cape
and marks a major achievement
in reaching the country’s
conservation targets, ensuring
ecological sustainability.
IN MEMORY: One of the artworks of renowned Eastern Cape artist Paul
Schmidt, who died recently
East Cape artist leaves
proud legacy of work
THE city of East London has bid
farewell to renowned Eastern Cape
artist Paul Schmidt.
Schmidt died on December 26 last
year and a memorial service was
held at the Fairlands Chapel in
Cambridge last Friday.
Born in Fort Beaufort in 1955, his
love for art developed at a young age
and he continued painting after
matriculating from Belgravia Art
School in East London.
Paul did technical/mechanical
animation for the SAA’s film and
video unit. After working as a graphic
designer in Johannesburg, he went
on to become a full-time artist.
His early exhibitions included
various galleries in Johannesburg,
Cape Town, East London, Florida
(Khan Gallery) and Fort Lauderdale,
and a successful solo exhibition in
the Sands Hotel, Vancouver, Canada.
The Gallery Africa in CT and CVD
Gallery in East London are two
galleries selling his work.
His exhibitions for 2013 included
The Eye Centre (EL), Ann Bryant Art
Gallery Coach House and Absa Vuka
Exhibition in the East London
Harbour Customs building. Some of
his works are on display at the VIC
Centre and Jikeleza Properties in the
Jikeleza Village Centre.
Pa u l ’s talents were recognised by
the South African Institute of Artists
and Designers in their publication of
The Collector’s Guide to Art and
Artists in South Africa – a visual
journey into the thoughts, emotions
and minds of artists.
Paul worked for the Daily Dispatch
in East London as their cartoonist. He
illustrated various children’s books,
psychology books and a legal
autobiography for the late Judge
Colin White. His paintings hang on
the walls of Saudi Arabian palaces
and in the boardroom of
Mercedes-Benz in East London.
of owning and running
her dance studio in
Gonubie and other
locations at schools
across East London.
The studio caters for
all, from ages three to
adult, with children
from 3-5 years starting
with a Dinky Dancer
class, which is an
interactive programme
to instill a love for
dance while developing
co-ordination, muscle
strength and
concent ration.
From six years and
up, the art of modern,
tap and hip-hop dance
is offered.
In 2016, Just Dance
Studio celebrated 10
years by presenting the
successful studio
production Fineas &
Ferb – The Best Dance
Show Ever at the Guild
Theat re.
Last year was a year
of growth with Charene
taking on two assistant
dance teachers, Kristin
Kirtley and Kim Hubbard.
Kris teaches hip-hop in
Gonubie at two locations
and Kim assists in the
Lilyfontein and East
Coast Resorts areas.
There are exciting
plans for 2018 with Just
Dance Studio making
dance classes available
at Komga Primary,
Cambridge Pre-primary
and at a new wedding
venue near Crossways
Spar in the Kwelera area.
The dance calendar is
full of exciting events
about the preservation
of planet and oceans.
produce a senior
educational production
written by Jen Bryson
Moorcroft with a
fantasy-based story line
educating us on the
plastic oceans which will
be presented this year.
International Dance
excellent results with
WITH Buffalo City only
excitement is mounting.
The event, set to
take place in the city
on Sunday January 28,
provides 100 coveted
The race promises
once again to be one
of the most anticipated
events of the year with
thousands of
spectators expected to
be part of the
festivities, cheering the
athletes on along the
for athletes and
spectators to get
Due to popular
will be fancying his
chances of taking the
But it will not be
easy with pros like
year’s winner Romain
Guillame, who are
among just a few top
triathletes looking for
The women’s field
With seven-time
