YWCA of the City of New York
Mission
Established in 1858, the YWCA of the City of New York is one of the nation’s
oldest non-profit organizations. Our mission is to address the critical needs of
New York City women and to empower them for success and leadership in their
lives, jobs and communities. We focus on underserved families through job
training, educational child care and after school programs; partnerships with
business, government and other not-for-profits; and advocacy on behalf of the
clients we serve.
Vision
The YWCA of the City of New York envisions a day when the diverse
women of New York City, once seen as at risk or working poor, can sustain
themselves and their families and are empowered to define and attain their
own unique goals and aspirations, contribute to strong communities and
build a better New York for everyone.

Dear YWCA-NYC friends and supporters,
While 2009 was a challenging year for the YWCA of the City of New York, as
well as for our supporters and the many New Yorkers we serve, it was also a time
that reconfirmed the importance of our mission. In fact, 2009 provided us with
numerous opportunities to strengthen our resiliency in the face of this economic
downturn. Thanks to both longtime partnerships and wonderful new friends, the
YW was able to continue its role as a powerful advocate for New York City women
and their families. Additionally, we were able to undertake a number of program
enhancements while also benefitting from expanded volunteer efforts, which helped
strengthen offerings and services for our clients even in these difficult times.
Education and EnrichMEnt for Youth
Finding safe, affordable and educational day care and
after school programs for children and teens is a major
challenge for many families in New York City, particularly
the working poor and women who are single heads of their
households, who are seeking further education to improve
their chances for economic self-sufficiency. To help address
this growing reality, the YW provided a range of these
programs in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island.
For over 30 years, the YW’s award-winning Early
Learning Centers (ELCs) for toddlers, and high-quality
after school programming for elementary and high school

students and other support services have been invaluable
resources for both students and their parents.
Nationally-accredited ELCs prepare pre-school
children for the fundamentals of school and have
demonstrated positive short- and long-term gains in
children’s cognitive and social development. Research tells
us what we have known for decades: by investing in our
children and families, we enjoy long-term savings, with a
more vibrant city of healthy, achieving children and more
stable families.
YW after school programming is designed to reinforce
school day lessons through homework help and project-
based learning, such as science experiments and field
trips. In fiscal year 2009, the YW built the capacity of its
counseling services by providing social worker student
interns from local universities to provide wrap-around
service referrals. In all our youth development offerings,
principals, teachers, parents and our nonprofit partners
play a crucial role in developing and refining each program.
WEN programs help women
achieve economic security through
financial literacy workshops.
WoMEn’s EMpoWErMEnt
The women who have enrolled in the YW’s Women’s
Empowerment Network (WEN), a holistic approach to
helping them find a job or a better job, have all faced multiple
challenges. For a woman who is unemployed and unsure
about how she’ll feed her children or keep her apartment,
WEN is a safe haven where she can access the numerous
resources she needs to reach her goals; it has become a place
where a woman can define success on her own terms.
Since 1978, WEN has helped women enhance their
skills in order to enter or re-enter the workforce. WEN
uses a case management approach to guide women of all
ages to articulate their life goals, establish an action plan,
and access skills-building training and mentoring, all of
which are necessary for securing meaningful employment.
Our emphasis on high-quality client service and on-going
alumnae programs allows WEN to customize solutions to
each woman’s circumstances and help her continue on the
road to economic self-sufficiency. This year alone, over 300
volunteer faculty and mentors helped deliver programming
such as financial literacy, business communication, resume
writing, job interviewing and retirement planning, as
did the support of the New York State Department of
Labor, plus that of several individual, foundation and
corporate funders.
In fiscal year 2009, the YW and the Family Resource
Center — which houses WEN — were awarded the YWCA
Northeast Region’s Economic Empowerment Award for
meeting YWCA-USA’s “Hallmark” standards for women’s
economic advancement by helping women break the cycle
of dependency on public assistance for themselves and
future generations of their families.
adVocacY
Collaborative tools are
employed in mathematics and
throughout all YW curricula.
The YWCA of the City of New York has a long and
rich history of supporting women’s empowerment and
promoting the power of diversity in building strong
communities. And we do not do this alone. We participate
in a broad network comprising the YW national and
regional offices, volunteers, community-based partners,
and the families and clients we serve. Using this approach,
the YW mobilizes or participates in creating a powerful
collective voice on behalf of the women and families of
New York City that the YW serves. As part of this network,
in fiscal year 2009 we were able to assure continuing
workforce funding for 22 groups in New York State, and
to work collectively to make sure thousands of women had
access to these vital services.
We continued to speak out to preserve fair and
responsive government funding for workforce development
programming for women, childcare and after school
programs. The YW historically has taken on tough issues
in this fashion; this year we protested New York State’s
contract procurement procedures for nonprofits which
led to a more equitable process for all New York State
nonprofits in the future.
A culture of mentorship is also part of the YW’s
DNA; the YW’s Academy of Women Leaders, corporate
volunteers, and community-based peers lend tremendous
support to YW programs by donating their time and
expertise by teaching and mentoring WEN students.
They are powerful, personal advocates and coaches for
the women in this program; in fact, many mentors and
mentees become long-time friends.
We at the YW draw tremendous inspiration from
our mission and our Board, staff, supporters, community
partners, families and clients. We are incredibly proud of
what we have achieved this year and are honored to work
alongside such a committed, talented and diverse group of
men and women. On behalf of the 5,000 women and their
families we serve every year, the YW thanks you for helping
us fulfill our mission: eliminating racism and empowering
women.

Bergtraum High School for Business Careers in Lower
Manhattan, and the Math & Science/LEGO Club at

partnership demonstrates the significant progress that can
be made to improve educational resources for students

Special Event Highlights
This year’s annual Family Day event, held on
May 16 at the YW Richmond Early Learning
Center, drew hundreds of friends from the Staten
Island community and beyond. Children and
parents enjoyed face painting, tennis, live music,
balloon art, dance
lessons, playground
games and numerous

On May 1, students of the YW’s
Elementary School Program at P.S. 90
presented Coney Island… in LEGO!
Over 7,000 pieces were used for a Lego
recreation of Coney Island. Many of the
students’ favorite attractions were featured,
including the New York Aquarium, the
Stillwell Avenue Station (pictured far left),
Nathan’s Famous hot dogs, KeySpan Park
and the Wonder Wheel (near left). HSBC
Bank USA, N.A. generously funded the
project, and NY1 (lower left) reported on
the event in their evening broadcast.
On June 25, more than 300 came together to “mix,
mingle & make a difference” at the Fifth Annual
Summer Soirée at Central Park’s beautiful
Loeb Boathouse. YW friends, supporters and board
members joined in celebration of the YW’s mission and
the individuals who exemplify that mission, including W
Award honorees Kym Hampton of NY Liberty (pictured
lower right with family) and Barbara Jones of Hyperion
Books (upper right with host Janice Huff, Meteorologist
for NBC 4).

The 36th Annual Academy of Women
Leaders Salute Luncheon continued the
event’s esteemed tradition of celebrating women
leaders who inspire greatness from us all. On
November 10, 41 women from America’s leading
companies were inducted into the YW Academy of
Women Leaders, and two proud mothers of children
in YW youth programs, Chesla Francis and T’ien
McCombs, were awarded the William I. Spencer

What is the mission of the YWCA of the City
of New York? The mission of our organization is to
address the critical needs of New York City women and
to empower them for success and leadership in their lives,
jobs and communities. We focus on underserved families
through job training, educational child care and after school
programs; partnerships with business, government and
other not-for-profits; and advocacy on behalf of the clients
we serve.
How does the YWCA-NYC operate? We are a
501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Board of Directors,
under the leadership of the Board Chair, oversees the
governance of the organization. The Chief Executive Officer
and the senior management team execute the Board’s
plans and policies and manage all aspects of program
and operations.
How many people does the YWCA-NYC serve
on a yearly basis? We serve approximately 5,000
women and their families a year.
Is the YWCA-NYC part of a larger YWCA
movement? Yes, the YWCA is the oldest women’s
organization in the world, serving 25 million women in
122 countries.
How is the YWCA-NYC funded? We are funded
through government contracts and grants, corporations,
foundations, individuals and investment income.
How does the YWCA-NYC measure success?
We are committed to program excellence, relying heavily
on the feedback of program partners, clients and frontline
staff to assess the efficacy of our efforts and the needs of the
families we serve. In addition, we have invested resources in
third-party evaluators such as the New York State One-Stop
Operating Systems and Fordham University National Center
for Schools and Communities, and partnered with The
After School Corporation to measure program improvement,
demonstrate the results of pilot programs, and plan for the
long-term.
How can I make a contribution to the
YWCA-NYC? All contributions are tax-deductible to
the extent allowed by the law. We accept individual gifts,
corporate and foundation gifts, stock gifts, legacies and
bequests, matching gifts, United Way designations and
in-kind contributions, such as printing, professional services
or property.
How do I contact the YWCA-NYC? We welcome
